BURMA (Myanmar) Arrive: 1200 Tuesday, 24 February Onboard Time: 1400 Sunday, 1 March Brief Overview: Burma is a land of unsurpassed beauty and inspiration, with the Buddhist religion being the focal point of countless Pagodas and Buddha images. Now that the political climate has stabilized, Burma is accessible and safe for travel, making it an especially unique destination. Even the names, Burma or Myanmar, Rangoon or Yangon, are still open for debate. Whatever you call it, this country is an astonishing sight for many travelers to see just how well-preserved the traditions of the Burmese remain despite increasing modernization – it can feel like you’re stepping into a whole other world and time period. The developing city of Yangon, the major city and gateway to Burma, has harmoniously built itself around the cultural heritage of the Burmese. Travelers will be amazed by the lush green surroundings of Yangon, reflecting an image unlike many other Asian cities. The Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is a jewel nestled in this glorious city scattered with British Colonial architecture from the British occupation ending in 1948. Of even greater beauty than the Golden Paya’s in Yangon, the sheer beauty of Bagan, and the serene atmosphere of Inle Lake are the people and culture of Myanmar – known for their modesty, conservatism, kindness and tolerance. Myanmar is fondly referred to as “Land of Immortality (Amarapura),” “Land of the Gems (Yadanarbon),” and “Golden Land (Suvanabhomi).” Once you see the rich heritage and natural resources of the country, you will understand just why these names are such a true reflection of the land. Each of the many destinations throughout the country offers something special to even the most experienced traveler. See Burma through the eyes of our students from the Spring 2014 Voyage in the Student Photo Gallery: Myanmar NOTE: The ship will be docked approximately 1+ hour from Rangoon. Thus, transportation costs are a significant factor in the price of day trips. ISE will run a shuttle each morning and evening that we are in port for your convenience. Brief Overview: Burma is a land of unsurpassed beauty

and inspiration, with the Buddhist religion being the

focal point of countless Pagodas and Buddha images.

Now that the political climate has stabilized, Burma is

accessible and safe for travel, making it an especially

unique destination. Even the names, Burma or

Myanmar, Rangoon or Yangon, are still open for

debate. Whatever you call it, this country is an

astonishing sight for many travelers to see just how

well-preserved the traditions of the Burmese remain

despite increasing modernization – it can feel like

you’re stepping into a whole other world and time

period. The developing city of Yangon, the major city

and gateway to Burma, has harmoniously built itself

around the cultural heritage of the Burmese. Travelers

will be amazed by the lush green surroundings of Yangon, reflecting an image unlike many other Asian cities. The

Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon is a jewel nestled in this glorious city scattered with British Colonial architecture from the

British occupation ending in 1948. Of even greater beauty than the Golden Paya’s in Yangon, the sheer beauty of Bagan, and

the serene atmosphere of Inle Lake are the people and culture of Myanmar – known for their modesty, conservatism,

kindness and tolerance. Myanmar is fondly referred to as “Land of Immortality (Amarapura),” “Land of the Gems

(Yadanarbon),” and “Golden Land (Suvanabhomi).” Once you see the rich heritage and natural resources of the country, you

will understand just why these names are such a true reflection of the land. Each of the many destinations throughout the

country offers something special to even the most experienced traveler.

RAN 116-102 Yangon Evening Tour with Dinner Evening

Disembark the ship and start your half-day city

orientation with a visit to the Sule Pagoda,

said to be over 2,000 years old and to

enshrine one of Buddha’s hairs. After photo

stops at City Hall and surrounding colonial

buildings, continue on to one of the religious

wonders of the world, Shwedagon Pagoda.

This remarkable stupa features a golden paya

which extends almost 98 meters into the air.

Following dinner at a local restaurant,

experience firsthand the market atmosphere

in Yangon as you explore a vibrant fresh fruit

market during an evening stroll through Chinatown.

“I absolutely loved the Shwedagon Pagoda. Dinner was also delicious.” – Anne,

Day 3: Depart in the morning for today’s Mount Popa excursion. In 442 AD, a great earthquake roared through central

Myanmar – and from out of the barren Myingyan plains rose Mount Popa. Volcanic ash on the mountain slope gradually

became fertile soil, and the peak blossomed with flowers of many colors. (Popa is the Sanskrit word for flower.) For the

inhabitants of the surrounding regions, the “sugar-loaf” peak was regarded as the home of the gods, the Mount Olympus of

Myanmar. Alchemist and occultists made their home on the mountain slopes- others were convinced mythical beings lived in

the woods and among the flowers. En route to Mount Popa, a stop will be made at a palm plantation to observe the locals

extract sugar from palms, which is used to make a variety of products. After lunch at Popa Mountain Resort, return to Bagan

for leisure time. In the late afternoon, take a sunset boat ride on the mighty Irrawaddy to explore waterfront life and watch the

sunset over Bagan. Tonight, you will enjoy a farewell dinner.

Ngwe Saung. In the afternoon, choose between spending the rest of the day at

your leisure or join us for a beautiful sandbar walk to Lovers Island. After

exploring the Island, there will be a cultural stop at the neighboring Bu Kwel

Village. Dinner tonight will be at your leisure.

Day 3: Group 1.A will board the coach for a quick drive to Treasure Elephant

Camp for an early morning experience riding the camp’s elephants through the

jungle. Upon return, Group 1.B will transfer to the camp for an equally thrilling

elephant ride through Myanmar’s tropical jungle. Elephants in Myanmar are still

put to work in the lush forests to pull logs as the areas are inaccessible to modern machinery. These magnificent animals are

treasured by their owners and take care of like family. After an unforgettable visit to the Elephant Camp, all groups will meet

back in Ngwe Saung for lunch. Following lunch at a local restaurant, transfer back to your hotel in Ngwe Saung. Tonight, enjoy

a farewell dinner at the Bay of Bengal Resort.

Day 4: If you have not yet had an opportunity to ride elephants, Group 1.C, this final morning you will journey to Treasure

Elephant camp. Students who have already experienced the camp will spend their final morning in Ngwe Saung at leisure.

Both groups will be transported to Pathein where you’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. On your way back to Yangon make a

pleasant stop at Pan Ta Nor Town, the home of former UN Secretary General U Thant, to see a bamboo making factory. Return

to your ship.

Hit all the highlights on this FULL-day program

covering the best of Myanmar’s capital city,

which lies in the country’s fertile delta region.

Your first stop will be the historic Shwedagon

Pagoda, towering almost 98 meters above the

green cityscape of Yangon. The Shwedagon

Pagoda is believed to be the earliest pagoda of

the Gautama Buddha Era, built by King

Okkalapa more than 2,500 years ago. In the

tradition of Buddhist faith, you will walk around

the pagoda clockwise. Alhough there are many

pagodas in Myanmar, few rival the Shwedagon Pagoda in scale or beauty.

Testament to the faith of the Burmese, this mesmerizing pagoda is covered with

hundreds of gold plates and the top of the stupa is encrusted with 4531

diamonds; the largest of which is a single 76-carat diamond!

Your tour continues with photo-stops in the city’s historic colonial center as well

as Sule Pagoda, followed by lunch at a local restaurant. Next, learn about the rich

culture and heritage of Myanmar at the National Museum. Here you will find several interesting exhibits, especially the 8-

meter-high Lion Throne, used by King Thibaw, the last Burmese king. Your next stop will be to visit the famous sprawling Scott

Market (Bogyoke Aung San Market). Interested shoppers will be excited to hunt through Myanmar’s largest selection of stalls

and shops offering local handicrafts. Continue on to visit the Chauk Htat Gyi Reclining Buddha. This colossal reclining Buddha

statue is one of the largest images in Myanmar.

snacks. Resident food enthusiasts will explain the details and secrets behind these delicious foods.

In the afternoon, the culinary tour continues with a light meal at Daung Lann Gyi, a great local place to try a ‘daung lan’ meal

(lots of small dishes for sampling -- ideal as it is not too heavy after all of the morning eating!) Then, hop on your bike and leave

but also to learn about local lifestyles in the countryside. By car/van you will then transfer to a nearby monastery where the

find yourself in the dry zone where, thanks to ancient canals, the inhabitants can sustain an agricultural livelihood. Take a

leisurely ride through farmland and villages where locals will be pleasantly surprised to see you and call out with friendly

greetings. Along the way we stop in the hometown of the Mayor U Bein Bridge, which is the longest teak bridge in the world.

Here, learn about a Muslim community that has lived here for the last two hundred years, and then explore the shady paths

through the ancient capital of Ava and Amarapura. Finally, we’ll drive to a nearby restaurant for lunch before heading across

the Irrawaddy River to Sagaing. Drop off your bags at the hotel and freshen up before heading up Sagaing Hill by van to learn

about the various Buddhist schools and monasteries in the area. A breathtaking view from the top of the hill caps off the day

before returning to town for dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Day 4: This morning, bike along the Irrawaddy River to Mingun. Visit Mingun’s famous sites on foot-including the Mingun Bell

which is one of the world’s heaviest and largest bronze cast bells. Next board a private boat to cross back to Mandalay.

Onboard, enjoy lunch as you cruise leisurely down the river. From the jetty, return by van to your hotel and enjoy a special

farewell dinner.

Day 5: In the morning transfer to Mandalay airport for your return flight to Yangon. On arrival transfer to your ship.

On the first day, transfer to Yangon Airport for your early morning flight to Bagan.

Upon arrival, first visit Nyaung U market to see the vast variety of fresh fruit and

vegetables for sale and gain appreciation for the city’s bustling market

atmosphere. Continue on to the most culturally significant and best preserved

pagodas of Bagan: including the Shwezigon, Gubyaukgyi, Htilo Minlo and the

amazing Ananda temple. Lunch will be at local restaurant. After lunch, transfer to

your hotel to check-in before further exploring Bagan’s incredible array of

temples and pagodas. Dinner will be at local restaurant.

Day 2: Enjoy an early morning panoramic view of Bagan atop one of the region’s

thousands of temples. The morning continues with a visit to a local village where

you will experience a day in the life of a local villager. After lunch at a local restaurant, return to your hotel for leisure time. In

the late afternoon, you will explore a hand-made lacquer-ware workshop and learn about one of Bagan’s primary industries.

Bagan is not only famous for its profusion of pagodas, but also for its artistic handicrafts such as lacquer-ware. Master

craftsmanship of lacquer-ware has been the pride of Bagan since the days of the Bagan Empire. After visiting a local

orphanage, journey to the final destination of the day via a casual ride in one of Bagan’s pony carriages. Arrive at Pyathada

Pagoda and enjoy a classic Bagan sunset! Sit back, relax and be amazed by the beauty of Bagan as the sun slowly set behind

the ancient pagodas. Tonight’s dinner will be at a local restaurant.

Day 3: Early this morning enjoy an optional sunrise hot air balloon ride* over the Bagan Archeological Zone. Prepare to be

amazed by one of life’s most breathtaking scenes, as you experience the unrivalled majesty of thousands of ancient temples

drifting below.

Afterwards, the group will depart for today’s Mount Popa excursion.

En route to Mount Popa, a stop will be made at a palm plantation to observe the locals

extract sugar from palms which is used to make a variety of products. After lunch at Popa Mountain Resort, return to Bagan

for leisure time. In the late afternoon, take a sunset boat ride on the mighty Irrawaddy to explore waterfront life and watch the

sunset over Bagan. Tonight, you will enjoy a farewell dinner.

Day 4: After breakfast, transfer to Bagan airport for your return flight to Yangon. Upon arrival, transfer to Ship.

Your day will begin with a visit to one

Myanmar, Kyakhatwaing Monastery.

In his lifetime a Myanmar male is

expected to spend some of his life

of the stupa reaches 14 meters higher than the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon.

After lunch, visit the Shwethalyaung Pagoda and marvel at its huge reclining

Buddha, which is said to be one of the largest Reclining Buddha’s in the world.

Afterwards, wander through the central market of Bago, which serves as a distribution point for cloth, household items, and

are encouraged to get out at the mountain’s midway station and hike to the

summit (PLEASE NOTE: this is a STRENUOUS hike.)

After spending the night at the mountain-top hotel in Kyaikhtiyo, you will return to Yangon by way of Bago, an ancient capital of

the Mon Kingdom in the 13th century. Bago is situated just 80 kilometers from Yangon and is said to have been founded in

573 CE by two Mon princes from Thaton.

Day 1: Travel by coach to Kyaikhtiyo (about six hours). A light snack is provided. Reach the Kinpusnikan, which serves as the

base camp for Kyaikhtiyo. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before joining local pilgrims at the town’s main junction. Board

pickup trucks for an adventurous ride up the steep summit. At a mid-way station you are encouraged to hop out and climb the

remaining steep steps to the summit. For those not interested in hiking it is possible to remain in the vehicle all the way to the

top. In the evening, explore Golden Rock platform and observe local life and shops at the summit. Experience an amazing

sunset with picture-perfect mountain ranges in the background. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.

Day 2: After enjoying an early morning sunrise, followed by breakfast at your hotel, transfer back to Yangon, stopping in Bago

en route. Visit the Shwethalyaung Pagoda, where you’ll see a huge reclining Buddha, believed to be one of the largest and

most life-like. The Buddha image measures 55 meters long and 16 meters high. Bago offers an interesting market just across

the river bridge from the train station. After lunch, you will have time to wander around the various market buildings that serve

as distribution points for cloth, household items and other imports. On the return journey to Yangon, visit a pottery village.

There are over 50 pottery workshops, where the craftsmanship has been handed down from generation to generation and is

still carried on in the time-honored tradition. The pottery is recognized for its quality and is distributed throughout the country.

Thousands of water pots, flower pots and well-designed utilitarian containers of varying shapes and sizes are produced daily.

The last stop will be at Htauk Kyan War Cemetery where fallen WWII soldiers are buried. After, return to your ship.

adventurer Philip De Brito. In

Thanlyin, you will visit the vibrant

and colorful Thanlyin market where fruits and

vegetables and other everyday items are bought

facility for many students as they come from many parts of the country. You will

learn about the educational system and the students’ daily life. During the visit, you will have time to interact with the ch ildren.

The markets in

Myanmar are a

source of income

for a large part of

the population. In

Yangon, everything

from local produce

to handicrafts and

clothes to gems

are sold. Begin at

Bahan market to

get a glimpse into

the local market scene. Next, move on to Scott Market (BogyokeAung San

Market). This sprawling, 70-year-old market is appropriately located in the center

of Yangon. It has the largest selection of Burmese handicrafts you will find in one

place. At the market you will find a variety of interesting Burmese souvenirs, from

lacquer ware to gems and jewelry. Contrast this with a final market in the

Chinatown area, where food and household items are more common. These

markets are awash with activity as the locals carry out their daily shopping. After the market tour, experience another daily

activity of the Burmese as you enjoy a refreshing coffee or tea and snacks at a local teashop.

Noviciation Ceremony

Visit Monastery

MINIMUM REGISTRATION: 25

MAXIMUM CAPACITY: 90

When Prince Siddhartha Gautama

left his palace in North India for

the first time at age 29, he gained

his first exposure to the world of

human suffering, including old age, disease and

death. This led him on a spiritual journey of

meditation and asceticism in search of truth.

Seated under a pipal tree at Bodh Gaya, he found

enlightenment and became known as Buddha,

‘the Awakened One’.

In the Shinbyu ceremony at Kalaywa Monastary,

young boys follow in the footsteps of the Buddha

as they are initiated into the monastic way of life.

The novices are dressed in glittering clothes and makeup to look like princes,

and they process joyously around the monastery with their families. They will then renounce these items and have their heads

shaved to begin their time as monks.

As a special guest at this revered event, you can participate by offering the newly appointed novices useful items such as

robes and soap for their stay at Kalaywa Monastery. This unforgettable experience allows you the rare opportunity to be a part

of one of the most joyous and auspicious ceremonies in a young Buddhist's life. Following the ceremony, you will be treated to

traditional Myanmar entertainment and have time to further explore the monastery before heading back to the pier.

“This was an amazing experience, and I loved how we were able to participate...” -- Amanda, SP’14 Voyage
