By Jeff sargeant

Throughout the years, Burwood has undergone many changes. Residents have witnessed events consistent with the suburb’s evolution from a quiet

rural community to a bustling middle suburb. Perhaps one of the greatest evolutions in Burwood’s history has been

witnessed by John Goff during his 94 years.

At the age of three, John and his family moved to Burwood from Albert Park. Back then, Burwood was very much a rural community.

“When we i rst moved, it was very much like country. For people who lived in Melbourne, Burwood really was the country. Most of the area was just open grassland,” John said. “Gardiners Creek was just thick with tea-tree, and you could hardly walk through it.”

His family moved to a derelict property near present-day Ireland Street. h e house is long gone, a casualty of post-World War II development, but John’s memories remain.

“We had a fair bit of freedom. We were in a lovely environment, our house was in the middle of a huge paddock. We were pretty free. Our parents were pretty strict, we had to toe the line, but we still had a lot of freedom.

“We had the whole of the area, in a sense, as a playground. In spring, lovely green grass grew to around 24 inches high. We used to run cows, which we milked. We built our own cricket pitch, we had our own golf course and we played footy. For us it was a great playground.”

John attended the Burwood State School which closed in 1989. It would be a driving force in

John’s return to Burwood many years later.John remembers happy school days. He and his

schoolmates would build billy carts and race them down Ireland Street. “It was a dirt road, and we had a wonderful run down there–it was pretty steep!”

As the Great Depression took hold, John was i nishing up at school. He quickly joined the queues of men. Many of them were still boys like him, searching for jobs.

“Conditions were ever so much worse than the more recent global downturn. For one thing, there was no Centrelink and there were no labour agencies. Everywhere there were queues of men, lined up asking

for jobs or waiting for handouts at soup kitchens. h ings were very, very tough for a big percentage of people.”

Eventually he found work at Marshall’s boot factory in Richmond, which John describes as tough.

“You did it because it was your job. If you wanted money, you just had to put up with the conditions. Beggars couldn’t be choosers. You just accepted it.”After two years of factory work, John and his brother

purchased property neighbouring his childhood home. h e brothers ran poultry and grew fl owers for market and also developed an extensive egg run which supported them and their parents. After six years in farming, John was accepted as a candidate for the ministry in the Methodist Church, which took him away from Burwood. h e next 43 years saw John work in a variety of locations: some nearby, such as Camberwell South, to as far away as Leigh Creek in outback South Australia.

Leigh Creek was a regular destination for John Flynn, the founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. “Several times I slept in the same house John Flynn had. His initials were carved on the water tank.”

When John retired from the church, he and his wife moved to Lakes Entrance and

later Pakenham. It was from Pakenham where John relaunched his involvement in Burwood.

Upon hearing about the Burwood History Group, John ventured to the group’s regular meetings and continued to attend for some years, participating in many events including the ‘Back to Burwood’ event. h is was a reunion of former students of the Burwood State School. Over 400 former students attended, much to the delight of John and other members of the group.

“We were absolutely over the moon.”John’s involvement saw him research and write

articles about Burwood’s past. h ey have been published in the Burwood Bulletin.

Although now residing in Pakenham, John refl ects on life in Burwood.

“It’s been interesting to see the way Burwood has developed. To go back there now, you look for all the old landmarks, but they’ve all disappeared.”

Change is inevitable, and something John respects: “We learn from the past so that we can contribute more wisely for the future.”

Reflecting links past to future

John Goff has great memories of Burwood

Full steam ahead for little locos

By euan Thomas

The station master anxiously looked over the waiting passengers ensuring they did not wander to close to the edge of the station

platform. He then made a garbled announcement of when the next train would arrive.

Station staf scurried up and down the platform in preparation for the next arriving train, marshalling commuters away from the edge ensuring they didn’t block the path of any disembarking passengers.

h e locomotive i nally arrived, belching grey sooty smoke from its belly as it pulled its packed carriages into the station.

h ose on the platform were blanketed in a i ne mist of carbon smoke and steam whilst they waited.

h e station master and his staf ei ciently moved passengers safely of the carriages and away from the platform before allowing the next group of passengers on to the train.

h e conductor, station master and his staf moved past the passengers checking their tickets.

h e station master kept an eye out for any late running passengers, he then swung the gate closed and yelled “All aboard!”. h e conductor scoured the length of the carriages before raising and then dropping his green l ag.

h e station master blew the all-clear on his whistle.h e locomotive’s whistle screamed, then it belched out a great grey cloud of smoke and soot from its belly, like some angry iron beast. Its wheels spun and skidded before i nding traction on the steel tracks.

h e carriages knocked and jumbled into each other gently throwing its passengers around before slowly moving out of the station.

h e station master watched at the train until the last carriage left the station before checking his watch for the arrival of the next train. He opened the gate to allow the next group of passengers on to

the platform.

h us another train load of passengers was taken out and around to enjoy the scenic route of the Box Hill Miniature Steam Railway Society Inc (BHMSR).

h e BHMSR recently celebrated its 25th year of providing rides to paying passengers recently on October 17. h e miniature steam railway service has been proudly operating for 30 years, of ering rides to the public since 1985.

h e miniature steam railway runs replica steam and diesel locomotives around 1.4 kilometres of track, with passengers able to enjoy the journey whilst winding its way through a picturesque, landscaped area of Elgar Park.

h e society also built a replica of the original Box Hill Station, including installing a working signal box used to keep track of the working steam and diesel locomotives.

h e society has an engine shed where maintenance work and repairs are carried out on the locomotives and carriages by volunteers each Wednesday and Saturday.

h e public can enjoy a ride on the miniature steam and diesel locomotives for $3 on the third Sunday of each month, from 11am–4pm. h e BHMSR would like to acknowledge support from Rotary.

Train passengers include (from left) Jia-En Anderson, his mum Betty Anderson and Patrick Thomas and his mum Amy Chong.

Monasteries are typically built in secluded

distant locations, where followers undisturbed by civilisation can immerse themselves in prayer and devotional practices.

However, we do not need to travel far to ind a monastery in suburban Melbourne. In Glen Iris there is Bao Lin Chan (Zen) Monastery.

I haven’t been to a Buddhist temple before and decided to pay a visit to this special place, which from humble beginnings to today now has some 300 disciples. It was meant to be a completely new and diferent experience, so I began my journey of disacovery

h e Zen centre has a meditation hall and can accommodate up to 60 people. Other facilities at the monastery include a small library, kitchen, dining hall and an offi ce.

All English and Chinese meditation classes and other classes are free. From 9am–5.30pm on Dec 26–28, there will be a three-day meditation retreat at the temple. Also, every Sunday at 3.30pm–5pm the Diamond Sutra chanting service takes place for devout followers. As well as these events there are also vegetarian cooking classes, Chinese calligraphy, Mandarin, fl ower arrangement and Tai Chi on dif erent days of the week. Disciples can make of erings such as food, fl owers, candles and donations.

h e people who follow the Buddhist path at Glen Iris are many and varied: retirees, housewives, university students, professionals and, last but not least, children. h e latter take part in the fortnightly meditation class on Saturdays from 7pm–8.30pm.

h ere is no doubt the monastery attracts many visitors from all walks of life as the dharma (Buddhist teaching) of ered there teaches equality, humility, kindness, tolerance, patience and forgiveness towards all sentient beings. Bao Lin Chan (Zen) Monastery belongs to the Zen school of Buddhism. h e main goal of Buddhism is to attain enlightenment, or Nirvana, by transcending all suf erings thus having eternal peace.

h is ancient religion, founded by Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) who was an Indian Prince 2500 years ago, adheres to law of causality whereby every physical and mental action of a person has an ef ect. If one does good in this life then he/she will build up good karma for this life, the next life or the next and the same goes for bad deeds. So everyone is responsible for his/her own salvation. Buddhism also teaches the Noble Eightfold Path which includes having the right understanding or view, right thought, right action, speech, right occupation and so on in order to achieve the Middle Way Reality. All these as well as dif erent meditation methods are taught in classes by the abbess, Venerable Master Jian Ren, ordained in 1994.

h e monastery is run by Venerable Master Jian Ren and other dharma masters. It was founded by a great Zen Master of this century, Grand Master Wei Chueh, now 84, who is also the founder of Chung Tai Chan Monastery in Taiwan built in 2001, the third largest religious building in the world. Soon after its completion, branches of Buddhist monasteries were established all over the world including eight in the USA, Australia (Bao Lin Chan Monastery in Glen Iris),

We suggest you take tram 70 along Riversdale Road to Stop 59.

By euan Thomas

A large group of people enjoyed the

Melbourne tramways Band as it celebrated 70 years of performing for the public at wattle Park on november 7.

As part of the band’s celebratory 70th birthday performance, the audience was treated to a wide range of music from classical numbers, swing, traditional marching band and a few contemporary numbers.

the Melbourne tramways Band was formed in 1940 as the Melbourne and Metropolitan tramways Band, but in 1986 it changed to its current name.

when originally established, the band was made up of tramways employees who were paid for their time. However the band is now made up of volunteer musicians who give freely of their time to ensure traditions are maintained to promote the benei ts of public transport.

Still in tune after 70 years of service

From the Melbourne Tramways Band

To our valued supporters:

On behalf of the members of the

Melbourne Tramways Band, I take pleasure in advising

you of the proposed dates for our 71st annual season of

recitals at Wattle Park.

At this time last year we were concerned that as a

result of the changes in the franchise arrangements

for the operation of Melbourne’s tramway network,

signii cant doubt existed as to whether the concerts

would continue. For those of you unaware of subsequent

developments, I am relieved and delighted to advise

that, upon taking over the franchise, the new operator

of Yarra Trams (KDR Victoria) undertook to ensure

this great tradition continued by sponsoring last year’s

concert season. Our sincere thanks goes to the incoming

administration for so promptly undertaking to maintain

the support provided by their predecessors in presenting

these free public concerts.

As has become customary, the i rst concert of the

season was the second Sunday in October, coinciding with

Victorian Seniors’ Week. Of particular note was the Band’s

second concert, which celebrated 70 years since the i rst

advertised public recital at Wattle Park in November 1940.

the band’s next performance will be its Christmas

Carousal commencing at 2.30pm on Sunday

december 12.

All concerts are free to the public.

Golden Days Radio has a music format that has

broad appeal for people of any age who have an

afection for and appreciate the nostalgic sound

of radio as it used to be heard from the 1930’s to the

1960s. So it’s on the music and radio style of

those years that Golden Days Radio mainly

concentrates, with some attention given to

music outside those parameters provided it

is of good lyrical and melodic quality and

of an evergreen standard which falls kindly

on the ear. Many listeners attracted to this

type of sound also value the light classics,

operetta, ballads and musical comedy and

there is a place for these genres, too, in the Golden Days’

range of musical styles.

hese days, “talk back” radio has reduced or completely

removed the music content from many radio stations.

Listeners to today’s radio usually have only two choices of

radio programming - talk back or music that they do not

understand or enjoy. Hence, the unique sound of Golden

Days Radio which is carefully formulated to ill the void.

he Golden Days Radio Story

Golden Days Radio history goes back to June 1990

when Dom Iacono registered an expression of interest

with the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal for a “special

interest licence” catering to the needs of senior citizens.

He placed advertisements in suburban newspapers asking

for interested persons to contact him with a view to

forming an association for that purpose. Dom convened

the irst meeting of the group at the Bentleigh RSL. He

invited Col Williams (who had already applied for a

licence on behalf of the war veteran community) to join

the group. Both men, together with Jack Burgesson,

the then station engineer at 3SCB Moorabbin, formed

a steering committee. By early 1992 membership stood

at around 40 and an application was made

for a test licence. In September 1992 the

irst test broadcasts were made and went to

air for seven days at 10 hours per day. he

subsequent conversion of the Australian

Broadcasting Tribunal to the Australian

Broadcasting Authority led to a change

in categories of community broadcasting

licensing and it became obvious that there

would be considerable delay before a permanent licence

would be issued. Progress continued however, and the

irst broadcast was made from premises provided by the

VATC at Caulield racecourse using a rented transmitter

in March 1994. A series of temporary restricted licences

continued for several years. Sadly, Dom Iacono passed

away in May 1996. He did not live to see the success

of his labours, culminating in the granting of a full time

licence in July 2001.

Golden Days Radio today operates from three modern

studios with state of the art equipment. It broadcasts

24 hours per day, seven days a week. More than 35

presenters provide live programming from 7.30am to

11pm each day with the remaining overnight period

supplied by music on computer hard drive using

equipment which randomly selects the music. he

station’s total playlist is in excess of 20,000 tracks. he

total staf (all voluntary) exceeds 90 people.

site home. Years later, seeds from the cone were planted by

his wife’s aunt. Four surviving seedlings were planted in

four diferent locations in Victoria, with Wattle Park being

one of them.

For years Remembrance and Anzac Day services were

held under the ‘Lone Pine’ tree at Wattle Park. However,

this year there was no Remembrance Day service,

except for the unoicial service organised by the women

walkersand the council workers.

‘Lone Pine’ is synonymous with the Anzac traditional

of sacriice and serving in defence of the country. It was

nonetheless disappointing that no representatives from

either the council or the RSL was available to undertake a

simple service at this historic and important symbol that

represents so much of the Anzac and Australian tradition.

Lest We Forget.

If you would like to know more about the story of the Lone Pine, see the article by Sonia Prasel which was a inalist in the Historical category of the CNAV awards in 2007: www.burwoodbulletin.org/archives/Lone Pine104.htm

By euan Thomas

T he term ‘lest we forget’ was, unfortunately,

given its true meaning when no representatives

from the local RSL or the City of Whitehorse

were available for Remembrance Day services under the

‘Lone Pine Tree’ at Wattle Park on 11th November.

If it wasn’t for a small group of women walkers, a

number of whom were war widows, and council workers

who kindly provided their truck radio for the broadcast

service, there would not have been a remembrance service

at all under this important Australian location and tree.

In what might be one of Australia’s most signiicant

war memorials in Melbourne, a pine tree proudly stands

in remembrance of the fallen Australian military service

personnel. Private homas McDowell of the 23rd Battalion

who fought at the vicious battle of ‘Lone Pine’ at Gallipoli

(6-10 August, 1915) brought a pine cone from the battle

David Fotheringham tries to hide a grin as he

declares he is beginning to get used to seeing

“more cars than sheep” since moving from

Horsham four months ago to minister at Ashburton

Uniting Church.

It is this same wry humour that attracted him to the

local congregation.

“I can say anything in good humour from the front and

it is well-received and we can smile

and joke along,” the Reverend said

of Ashburton’s 100-strong lock of

worshipers.

“here’s always a lot of conversation

after services. People stick around;

they stay and talk.”

Yet it was with initial reluctance

that David agreed to talk with

the church council at Ashburton

after being urged by the Uniting

Church’s Placements Committee to

take up his latest role.“I had been

in Horsham for six-and-a-half years

and loving it there,” David explained.

“It’s a fantastic congregation and

community. I was pretty reluctant

to move towards the city, but came

along, had a chat and fell in love.”

David said the Ashburton church

was an excellent it for his family: wife Bron and sons

hat is exactly what David has been busy doing. He

is particularly enjoying his role as a Christian Religious

Education teacher to Solway Primary School’s Grade 5

and 6 children.

“hey’re a great group of kids and we’re now discussing

setting up a mentoring program between the church and

the school,” he said. “I love the fact there is a real sense of

community here. I bump into people I know whenever I

wander down the street and they want to talk about who

lived in the house before them. I haven’t lived in suburban

Melbourne before, but it’s not all that diferent (from the

country) the way that individuals connect.”

David grew up in Adelaide and became a Christian

while in high school.

“At school we used to pray once a week and it occurred

to me that was either pointless or, alternatively, why were

we only praying once a week? So I started reading the

Bible and went along to a youth group,” he said.

“I came of faith at a camp in Year 12. hat was where I

irst made a public commitment to Christ. A speaker was

talking about God’s extravagant love and I was inspired

and found myself down the front.”

It was just before David inished an honours degree in

physics that he decided he wanted to

become a minister.

He spent a year doing full-time

volunteer work for the Uniting

Church’s youth services and then

headed of to Canberra to study post-

graduate physics “to make sure”.

He said studying laser physics was

good fun, but he was gnawed by

the same issue: that people are more

important than physics.

“I was locked up in a dark room

most days and I thought, ‘God’s

calling me to engage with people

more than this’,” David said.

He went on to study theology

and explored his faith and worship

through the Baptist, Anglican and

Uniting churches before being

ordained through the Uniting

Church a month after he married Bron. His irst three-

year placement was in the Whittlesea, Kinglake West and

Arthurs Creek region, before he moved to Horsham.

David says he feels he is fulilling a sense of God’s

calling. “As a minister I have the opportunity to engage

with people on a variety of levels, including exploring

faith and stories of the Bible in worship, and in other

contexts such as being able to walk alongside people

during the big circumstances of their lives – births, deaths,

baptisms, weddings,” David said. “his is a congregation

who are keen to share together.”

Taking Stock of Who Owns WhatBy Natalie filmer

If you’ve ever wandered along the footpaths of Burwood or driven down a road in Ashwood, chances are you’ve been walking on private property. And it’s even more likely that the

property in question belongs to the Stocks family.A lot has been written about this pioneering Burwood

family and, thanks to the eforts of Waverley Historical Society, history buf Dan Prior and Stocks descendant Julie Devercelli, a plaque in Morton Rd, Burwood, now commemorates the Stocks family’s contribution to the area.

However, there are no signs to mark the pockets of land that, due to the way land used to be subdivided, still belong to the Stocks family.

he old way of doing subdivisions meant that the original land owner remained owner of any property not transferred to purchasers. his usually meant roads and corners of streets were still left in the name of the subdivider.

As a result, the Stocks family still own the road between Morton Rd and Leopold St, and another parcel between Leopold and Haig streets. hey own the corner of the footpath at the north corner of Leopold St, being the triangle that is cut out of the corner property so you can walk around the corner more easily.

hey own the southern corner of Haig St and Morton Rd and the corner of the property at the northern corner of Somers St and Aylwin Avenue, which is just the other side of Burwood Highway.

hey own part of Elizabeth St, near Warrigal Rd, and another part near Harrison Ave. hey own Julie Court and Closter Ave.

hey own George, Douglas and Harold streets and the rest of Morton Rd, including all the corners. Also, the lower part of Barnes and Harrison avenues, and the corners as well.

Every day, people walk over land owned by the Stocks family. It was a piece of this “forgotten property” which eventually led to the commemorative plaque.

In 2008, history buf Dan Prior was alerted by his parents to a Notice for Adverse Possession of a park down the road from their Barnes Ave home. he notice said Monash City Council was making the claim on land owned by James Stocks.

Adverse possession applications can be made where someone claims that they have held or used the land, which they don’t own, in a way that has stopped the registered owner enjoying the use of the land.

Mr Prior, who is a student of history and now a solicitor, confesses that he is quite obsessed with land and its historical uses. He did a property title search and, sure enough, James Stocks had bought the land in 1912.

“Clearly, my search for James Stocks was not going to be straightforward,” Mr Prior said. “(But) I felt that someone needed to know that the land was about to be adversely possessed. I rang my then girlfriend, now wife, Lauren, and told her what I had found out about the land. She advised me that I was obsessed, that I needed to let it go, and that under no circumstances was I to start cold-calling people. Had she been my wife then, perhaps I would have obeyed her command. As she was only a girlfriend, I considered her point, pulled out the White Pages, and looked up Stocks.”

As luck would have it, Mr Prior’s irst call was to Joan Stocks, who knew all about the Stocks of Burwood, and in particular James and Elsie Stocks, their son Douglas, and his son and daughter, Peter and Julie. Julie Devercelli was the only member of the James Stocks clan left and as such, the Council was in efect adversely possessing against her land.

Mrs Devercelli had no idea why the land hadn’t been transferred years ago on the death of her grandfather, but she requested that the land be kept as a park and that the plaque be installed on the land. Monash Council agreed.

After transferring the property from her grandfather James, to her father Douglas, and then to herself, Mrs Devercelli transferred the property to the Council. And the Stocks family land continues to be enjoyed by the whole community.

I wonder if our kids know what an apron is?

The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. Hidden behind the landmark A-frame church on the corner of Burwood Highway and Blackburn Rd is

UnitingCare East Burwood Centre (UCEBC).Although next

to the church, they are an independent community support organisation. Their aim is to contribute to a better life for the people who turn to them for support. The organisation started over 35 years ago with a particular focus on relationship counselling. Since then, they have expanded their services to accommodate the changing needs of the community.

Their current services include professional counselling for a variety of issues including loss and grief, relationship and family matters, abuse, stress, anxiety and depression. The counsellors are tertiary qualiied, offering non-judgemental support.

There is no limit to the number of sessions and the service is free to people living in Whitehorse and surrounding areas.

In addition, emergency relief is available for clients living in the area bordered by Canterbury, Warrigal and Highbury roads and Dandenong Creek. UCEBC is able to assist with food vouchers, food donations, clothing and housing referrals to people who need a hand. They also look at ways to help people get their lives on track and break the poverty cycle. Each year the centre sends out about 130 hampers to brighten the Christmas season for families that otherwise would have a bleak time.

The centre is abuzz everyday with a variety of activity classes, mainly aimed at the elderly and disabled. For some, this is their social event of the week thanks to the volunteers who drive them to and from the classes, as well as running the groups and providing a meal or snack to enhance the social aspect of the day.

Finally, their computer lab is teaching senior citizens how to surf the internet and stay in touch with friends and family through email.

So what if you don’t need any of these services? Perhaps you could help. The centre is already supported by a number of volunteers but more are always needed, with a wide variety of jobs on offer such as collecting donated food, repairing computers, drivers, cooks, activity coordinators or at the coal face, directing the daily low of people that see the centre as a haven. Training is provided for frontline volunteers. Some funding comes from government, but the more the centre can raise independently, the more assured they are of being able to continue to run their

valuable services. You can support them through donations and their fundraisers such as the annual fete and Bunnings sausage sizzles. Practical donations of sensible clothing and non-perishable food are also needed.

Christmas is approaching and the centre would particularly like to receive donations of suitable food for their Christmas hampers, to help brighten the festive season for a family. Any contributions can be left at the centre, corner Burwood Highway and Blackburn Road, East Burwood, between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

How many times have you heard a relative

complaining about their hearing aids?

Many individuals with hearing loss are

reluctant to consider a hearing aid because they

simply don’t know enough about them or have

heard misleading information.

Hearing aids are by far the most effective and

easiest way to resolve most hearing dificulties. there are many different styles and brands

of aids.

Only a qualiied audiologist can help you select the most appropriate one for your listening

requirements and lifestyle factors. When itted and tuned correctly, a hearing aid can have a

profound positive impact on someone who has

been isolated by hearing loss.

research has shown they improve quality of life

for the hearing impaired as well as their ability

to communicate.

Here are some are three common myths about

hearing aids, dispelled for your understanding:

MYTH:

Hearing aids are big and cumbersome

FACT: Hearing aids are now smaller than ever

before. even people with a severe hearing loss

can wear devices that cannot be seen. this is

largely due to the development of receiver-in-

the-canal (riC) devices. these devices have a

very small ampliier unit that sits behind the ear and a speaker unit that sits inside the ear. As

a result they are more cosmetically appealing

and nearly invisible. in addition, a more natural

sound quality is achieved because the ear canal

is not occluded.

MYTH:

Hearing aids are dificult to manage

FACT: For the majority of people, this is not

the case. Hearing aids simply take patience

and perseverance when irst itted, from the patient and their audiologist. However, with a

little practice, hearing aid management becomes

second nature to most people. there are even

cases of patients who are vision impaired or

who have arthritic hands learning to manage

hearing aids. However, it is important in these

cases that the correct hearing aid style is

selected for the patient. Hearing aids with a

small battery and non-tactile controls should be

avoided for these patients.

MYTH:

Hearing aids do not help you to hear in noisy

situations

FACT: in the past, hearing aids picked up sounds

equally from all directions. this meant detection

of speech as well as all the surrounding noise.

Most hearing aids itted today have directional (2 or more) microphones. these microphones

work together to enhance speech from the front

and reduce noise from behind. research has

shown that directional microphones improve

speech intelligibility and listening comfort in

noisy situations.

For more information on hearing loss and hearing aids contact a qualiied audiologist by calling 9885 8001 or see www.audiologyultra.com.au for more information. Enquire about a free hearing aid trial.

Waverley Aikido School held a free introductory class on October 5 during Senior’s Week, to

introduce seniors to the speciic aspects of this martial art that are relevant to older people.

Aikido is a defensive martial art that aims to resolve conlict without injuring an attacker, or the person being attacked. It is easier on the body than other martial arts and focuses on self defence and learning how to fall.

he Waverley Aikido School is run by instructors, Mark Bean and Rob Cas who have been involved in Aikido for over 15 years and both have their 3rd Dan black belts.

Mark introduced the class and explained the philosophy of Aikido. Seniors were taught how to fall backwards without hurting themselves. Mark mentioned that if you put your arm out to break the fall you are more likely to break the arm or shoulder. Rolling backwards ‘in a ball’ with the head tucked-in enables you to break the fall and get up straight away. his was good news for seniors as it prevents hip and shoulder injury.

Retired Waverley Aikido instructor and senior, Glenys Mallen (3rd Dan black belt), introduced the class to a basic self-defence technique of getting away from a grasp to the wrist. his involved moving to the side and breaking the attacker’s balance, forcing them to release their grip. It was amazing how well this worked even if the attacker was a larger and stronger person.

Mark and Rob concluded the class with a

demonstration of some basic Aikido techniques showing how they can be used to deal with physical conlict using movement and delection.

Rob explained that Aikido is particularly suitable to women and seniors as it does not require one to be physically strong because it uses the attacker’s force against them. He emphasised the aspect of learning how to fall correctly, both backwards and forwards, so you can get up unhurt. his is very relevant to many sports such as football and netball. Aikido can teach players how to roll when falling and continue playing instead of injuring an arm or shoulder.

For more information contact Rob on 0412 842 227 or email [email protected] or visit the Waverley Aikido School’s website waverleyaikido.org.au. he School trains on Tuesday evenings. he Beginner’s class is at 6.30pm.

St Matthew’s Anglican Church Still going

At the corner of High Street and warrigal road Ashwood/Ashburton, screened by large trees, stands the Anglican Church of St Matthew.

Since its establishment in 1947, congregations have been worshipping and bearing Christian witness at this site. this continues to this day, notwithstanding some local misconceptions that St Matthew’s may have closed, which is certainly not the case.

St Matthew’s members are caring and supportive. newcomers always receive a very warm welcome and comment on the friendliness that they ind at the church. A “cuppa” in a happy atmosphere after the 9.30am service each Sunday gives the opportunity to chat and become acquainted with other worshippers.

St Matt’s Cats, a Christian playgroup for Carers and tots, meets each thursday during school terms from 10.30am–12.30pm. Please contact leonie on 9802 6406 or 0414 547 952 to ind out more.St Matthew’s is also home to a Chinese Christian community which meets for worship, fellowship, education and children’s activities each Sunday. if you wish to make contact, call thomas on 0438 588 308.

For general enquiries about St Matthew’s contact Barry on 0413 874 281 or just come along on Sunday at 9.30am. You will be welcomed with open arms.

Burwood Uniting Church, Cnr Warrigal Rd and Hyslop St.

We are once again busy preparing to ‘Follow the Star’ for the 10th year. his annual community event features interactive displays telling some of the story of Jesus – the Christ in Christmas.

Many art forms are featured such as patchwork, embroidery, banner making, painting, computer and video presentations, paper crafts, design and creative writing, so all ages and abilities ind ways to join in and rediscover the story of Christmas.

We vary the emphasis and display each year.

his year we will be following in the footsteps of Mary and Joseph as they journey to Bethlehem and Jesus is born. Along the way we will be part of a census and see the shepherds on the hillside. We enjoy sharing this story with individuals and groups as they visit. We hope this year to provide information of interest to overseas students who may be unfamiliar with this story and Christmas celebrations in Australia.

A take home bag is available with activities to encourage families to think again about the message this baby brought to the world so many years ago.

Come as a group or individually to share an experience that will truly add to your Christmas preparations.
