Eastern Lions’ President Norm Willcocks says the club’s successful 2012 season has generated increased interest amongst prospective members. In 2012 Eastern Lions was promoted to irst division in the Victorian league after the Senior team was crowned South-East Division 2 Champions. The club’s other teams also inished the season

on a high, with the Under-13 teams winning their league and the Reserve team placing runners-up.

During the oficial soccer season only 22 games are played, but the club remains up and

running year round. Various training sessions take place from Tuesday to Friday, with matches being held on either Saturday or Sunday depending on the season. Eastern Lions consists of Senior and Reserve men’s teams as well as Junior teams for girls and boys aged as young as seven.The Eastern Lions’ philosophy is “to

provide the best possible environment for the development of soccer within our region”.

The club achieves this by providing players and their families with a welcoming and supportive

environment. A number of players have donned the club’s oficial red and white colours for over 100 games and one family has been wearing the uniform for three generations.

With such dedicated players Eastern Lions Soccer Club is sure to be scoring goals for another 50 years. Victoria may be the home of the AFL, but that has not stopped Burwood from becoming gripped in soccer fever. Eastern Lions Soccer Club has been hosting

training sessions and playing matches for half a century. Established in 1963, the community-based club has approximately 400 members and is now looking to recruit even more with their upcoming Open Day.

Two upcoming events are keeping everyone busy at the moment. First, on December 9, is the “Billy Whiteside Cup”, a Melbourne Soccer Expats’ Family day Reunion. Two “England vs Scotland” games will be played; and a band and a rafle will both help to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Hot on the heels of this, Eastern Lions will host its second annual Open Day on 16 December from 10am to 2pm. The event will be located at the club’s Gardiners Reserve grounds in Sixth Avenue, Burwood. Anyone interested in joining the club, as a member or otherwise, is welcome to come along. The Open Day promises to be a lot of fun, with a sausage sizzle and many opportunities for interested parties to seek advice on how to join, to view the extensive and well-maintained facilities and to speak to many of the club’s long-serving members.

He says they are now more intuitive and are able to read a crowd and adapt their playing style and songs accordingly. his seems like a necessary tool for buskers, as the crowd will often show their appreciation by giving

more money!Busking to a large group makes the

boys “feel special” and secures their belief that they are playing well. Yet a small crowd is not of-putting; rather it is seen as a motivator to perform better in order draw more people in.

he world of busking can become quite competitive – and political. Astute negotiating skills are required to difuse tensions between performers all vying for prime playing position. he duo found itself in such a situation once, but it was luckily resolved without conlict. Although heavy rain makes it impossible to play, the boys don’t let a light shower dampen their enthusiasm as they don raincoats, ind shelter and continue to play to others who have also braved the elements.

He believes that busking is a great way for any budding performer to step out and show of their abilities. He says it has given him inspiration to follow his dreams of becoming a famous musician.

Buskers have the ability to liven up streets and colour the day with song and music. So next time you hear and see a street performer, stop and listen – and show your appreciation for their eforts. You never know, the next Justin Bieber could be playing at a market near you …

Busking has been used as a universal medium to entertain the masses since antiquity. Buskers – or street performers will sing, dance, play music

or recite poetry to a willing crowd and can be found on any city street in just about any country or culture. he origin of the word “busk” comes from the Spanish verb buscar, which is translated as “to seek”. And just as the name suggests, these entertainers are most likely seeking fame and fortune via humble beginnings. It may surprise some, but big-name musicians such as Leonard Cohen, Eric Clapton, Tracy Chapman and Australia’s John Butler all began their illustrious careers by busking.

A regular identity at Rotary’s Camberwell Sunday Market is a local duo called “Rhogie”. Made up of cousins Philippe Phan, 13, and Artan Walker, 9, these boys are a singing and guitar-playing team with deinite stars in their eyes. Artan’s sister, Indigo, also has her time in the spotlight, pitching in as a back-up singer on occasions. Being relatively new to the music world, the boys use busking as an opportunity to practise their musical passion. Although the inancial reward is always appreciated, Artan believes that “busking is practice and money is a bonus”.

I spoke to Artan about his music, and it was evident from the beginning that he has a true passion and drive to improve his musical talents, declaring that he wouldn’t mind becoming the next Justin Bieber! Artan has been playing guitar for a little over a year and busking for six months. He has a palpable enthusiasm for busking, gaining great satisfaction from the challenge of performing to strangers and ultimately seeing them enjoy the music.

As one would expect, the band experienced nerves and hesitation when they irst began performing. However, with continued performances, and encouragement and support from their families, Artan

and screen. One mural depicted King Neptune coming out of a beautiful blue sea holding a trident and riding in his chariot; the other was of Apollo, riding in a chariot with three horses, in the bronze light of the sunset.

Burwood resident Peter Navaretti did a lot of research on the Civic heatre. He spoke to Ms Jenepher Duncan, formerly of the Monash Museum of Art, about the murals. She told Peter that the murals at the Civic heatre were painted by the famous artist, Clifton Pugh, who also did the mural at Monash University.

Barbara Mockridge (née Clarke), commenced working at the Civic heatre six months after it opened and stayed for eight and a half years. She worked as a cashier and usherette. Fridays and Saturdays were the busiest days, requiring four usherettes and two doormen. Barbara was also required to work in the ticket box selling tickets and taking telephone bookings on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

he usherettes’ uniforms matched the interior of the theatre. hey wore long fawn evening skirts with light blue tops and diamante clips at the neckline. Later, the uniform changed to long blue skirts with short-sleeved boleros and white shirts with big balloon sleeves and raspberry coloured cummerbunds. he men wore dress suits with bow ties and dress shirts. he management were very strict about the dress code of the employees and regular inspections were undertaken.

he theatre’s exterior had large square panels painted a dull pink with a row of blue doors in white surround and a parapet above the “now showing” attraction board. Barbara remembers having to climb up a ladder, in her long skirt, to change the letters in the movie title each week.

Children went to the Saturday afternoon matinee at the theatre unaccompanied by adults. Most of the children walked on their own or in groups; however, some who lived farther aield caught the red bus that ran along High Street. Parents did not drop of children and pick them up in cars like they do these days.

In 1939, on the corner of Johnston and High Streets in Ashburton, stood an “Old Hall”, which seated 400 people. he owner, Mr A.F. Charleston, a leading

identity in the district, formed an association with Mr F.P. Selleck to renovate this hall and screen pictures. No work was done on the hall until after the war, when Ashburton was booming – homes were mushrooming, shopping centres enlarging, the railway was extending and the Housing Commission had commenced its 1200 home project.

Appreciating the inadequacy of the original plan, Messrs Charleston and Selleck approached the government for permission to build a 1000 seat theatre. he government granted a permit on the condition that building materials were kept to a minimum due to a shortage after the war. he bricks, rooing, looring, timber and iron from the “Old Hall” were incorporated in the new building; cement was brought from other States.

Every comfort for the theatregoer was installed including Dunlopillo seating, Donach air conditioning, Western Electric microphonic sound and a loating screen, luxurious furnishings, a

crying room, a pram room and even a car park! Finally, the world’s foremost ilms were obtained for the “Civic” screen.

An advertisement was placed in the Progress Press paper on hursday, 2 December 1948, for the “Gala Opening of the Civic heatre” at 191 High Street in Ashburton (phone WM 6471). he program for ive nights was: hree Daring Daughters starring Jeanette MacDonald, José Iturbi, Jane Powell and Ann Todd, plus featurettes. On Saturday, 4 December 1948, Mr Norman, M.L.A, oicially opened the Civic heatre.

he theatre was a stadium-style plan designed on austerity lines, but with delightful simplicity and intimate atmosphere. Inside, the carpet was pale blue, which was very hard to keep clean with melting ice-creams, drink spills and chewing gum. he seats were a brown colour in a tweed-like woven fabric. he upper side walls were aqua blue with a painted mural in each side of the proscenium

Civic Theatrehe children at the Saturday matinees were very

noisy and sometimes usherettes had to break up ights and administer irst aid to the injured. Some of the children threw chewing gum around the theatre. On one occasion a piece lodged in a little girl’s hair and one of the usherette’s had to cut it out.

Barbara has a lot of stories about things that happened at the Civic while she was working there. One Saturday afternoon a little boy about seven years of age came running out of the theatre screaming and pointing into his mouth. Barbara and the doorman saw a threepence stuck to the roof of

his mouth which they unsuccessfully tried to remove. A man collecting tickets for the evening show managed to get his ingernail in behind the coin and release it. he boy stopped crying, looked relieved and said, “Gee, thanks Mister, My Dad would have gone crook as I have to get a Herald on the

way home”.Barbara ran the Civic Birthday Club. Each child could

have a free ticket on his or her birthday. here were party games like “egg and spoon” races up the aisles during intervals and balloon blowing and busting competitions on the stage.

Valerie Holt (née Davis) was also an usherette at he Civic. She worked part time and remembers being paid £1/2/6 a night. Her sister, Dorothy Davis, worked in the ticket box. Every night Valerie and her sister walked to and from their home in Albion Road. he cost of admission at the Civic heatre was 1/- for the front stalls, 3/- for the back stalls and 5/- for the lounge.

Dr Copeland lived in High Street not far from the theatre. If there was a medical emergency of a serious nature, one of the usherettes would run over the road to see if he could help. Dr Copeland was well-known in the Ashburton area for many years.

Both Valerie and Barbara remembered that Elly Lukas worked as an usherette at the theatre before she became famous. She established Australia’s leading beauty and spa institute in 1954 and the Elly Lukas Beauty herapy College is still in Flinders Street, Melbourne.

George Haddon who worked as a lolly boy at the theatre became a cartoonist with he Herald and later at the RACV.

he phrase, “lea pit”, refers to cinemas and theatres generally so, not surprisingly, leas were a problem at he Civic and from time to time they had to get pest controllers in. If the children at the matinees wet the seats in the afternoon, the usherettes had to try to dry the seats of for the evening show.

he irst manager at the Civic heatre was Mal Mainon, the second was Colin Hogben and the third was Ralph Blake who later worked at the Metro heatre in the city.

After the Burwood and the Toorak Drive-ins opened in 1954 and 1956 respectively, attendance numbers at local theatres began to drop. When television was introduced in 1956, people gradually purchased them and were less inclined to go out for entertainment.

he Civic heatre closed in July 1959 and sold for £40,000. It was the end of an era in Ashburton.

Mel Elliott, now in his eighties, did some work at the Civic as a projectionist. He was involved in selling the projection equipment, screens, seats and lights. A newspaper advertisement was placed

and according to Mel the Presbyterian Ladies’ College purchased the theatre’s seats and put them in their auditorium. After the Civic was pulled down, a Neptune service station was built on the corner of High and Johnson Streets. Currently there is a Shell Service Station on the site and in 2011 a Coles Express store was built in conjunction with the service station.

he usherettes formed a close bond during their time at the theatre and even after 60 years some of them continue to meet once a month. A few of them have moved interstate but they keep in touch by telephone.

Keeping the Faith with the Mothers’ Unionthat an oice bearer in the Young Wives needed to be an enrolled member of the Mothers’ Union. he vicar, the Rev. Lyle McIntyre, suggested that Young Wives members should be ofered instruction for admission to the Mothers’ Union. Dulcie was admitted at St John’s

on 23 July 1960 by Rev. McIntyre.With Dulcie’s husband Tom being

the local bank manager, it seemed that Dulcie would be a good treasurer – and she certainly was. Dulcie, Tom and family came to live in Wattle Park, where they attended St heodore’s Anglican Church near their home in Chestnut Street. It was here Dulcie joined the Mothers’ Union and again took on the role of treasurer. Sadly for Dulcie, the branch closed but she was able to join the Diocesan Members department of the M.U. at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Dulcie also held the position of secretary during a term when Mrs Erline Balmer was president. It was through Erline that she came to many meetings at St Matthew’s. Dulcie is now unable to drive her car and move around as she would like, but her love of the Mothers Union is as strong today as it was 52 years ago.

She is thankful for the friendships she has made over the years through Mothers’ Union.

In 2012 St Matthew’s Anglican Church celebrated 65 years in Ashburton. A special service took place on 25 September, during which two members of the Mothers’ Union, Irene Fowler Lillywhite and Dulcie Cook, were presented with their awards and badges for 50 years long service with the union. he awards were presented by Mrs Joy Venville, M.U. Diocesan President, and Mrs Anne Kennedy (immediate past president and also Junior Australian Vice-President).

his was a very memorable day with about 60 present, including family and friends of Irene and Dulcie. Irene’s sister-in-law came from Cairns and Robin, a family member, all the way from Canada for the occasion.

Irene Fowler Lillywhite. In 1959 Irene joined the Young Anglican Fellowship and church choir at St Mary’s Church in Redclife, Queensland. It was there she met Mrs Olwyn Jull, the rector’s wife, who was the enrolling member, organist and choir mistress. At the same time Irene’s future mother-in-law, Mrs Margaret Lillywhite, and choir partner Mrs Nell Rogers inspired her with their stories of M.U. meetings. After her marriage in 1961 Irene started attending meetings with these ladies, and after the birth of her irst child she was admitted to the union on 23 September 1962. As a young mother, Irene was very grateful for the support and care from members. Mrs Olwyn Jull went on to become the irst Australian president of the Mothers’ Union. here is an Olwyn Jull Memorial Special Purpose Fund in her honour.

In 1973 Irene’s husband was transferred with his work to Melbourne; here Irene attended the Young Members’ Department at St Andrew’s Glen Waverley, and M.U. at St Paul’s Glen Waverley. he family came to Ashburton in 1985, and Irene has been a parishioner and member at St Matthew’s ever since. She has held many positions in Mothers’ Union: Branch President, Secretary, Treasurer and Link Secretary, Deanery Coordinator and Deanery Vice-President. She gives thanks to God for the aims and vision of Mary Sumner in starting the Mothers’ Union and is thankful that she has been able to be part of the 50 years of fellowship and friendship with Mothers’ Union members in Australia and around the world.

Dulcie Cook. Dulcie joined the Young Wives group at St John’s Horsham in the mid-1950s. When she was asked to be the treasurer of that branch she was advised

For sufferers and ex-sufferers who want to connect with other women who will understand, there is a facebook group called “Hyperemesis Gravidarum Support Australia”. This is a private group, where discussions cannot be seen by other facebook friends. Members of this group are trying to raise awareness of this rare and misunderstood condition to ensure women get the support they need.

Hyperemesis: Pregnancy Without the Glowby Catherine Fernando

When a woman inds she is pregnant with a planned pregnancy, it is an indescribably exciting moment. I’ll never forget my own experience staring at a positive test indicator with euphoric disbelief.

Within a week of my wonderful news, I remember waking up and running to the bathroom to vomit. My partner and I looked at each other and then laughed; I was an initiated pregnant woman, with morning sickness. However, the vomiting continued not just in the mornings, but several times a day. Within another week I couldn’t eat anything without bringing it back up; I couldn’t leave the house or go to work.

It got worse. By week seven I was unable to move from bed; even turning over made me vomit. For the irst month of my pregnancy, my body wasted away to skin and bone and I lost 12 kilograms. My doctors prescribed me increasingly powerful anti-nausea medication, but despite this, I continued to deteriorate and sometimes had to go into hospital to get luids through an I.V. drip when dehydration became dangerous for both me and my baby. Doctors’ warnings of blood clots caused from lying in one position for too long struck fear into me. I forced myself to try and stand up every few hours, which inevitably caused vomiting. My parents and my partner took it in turns to care for me around the clock as I couldn’t do anything for myself. I was useless and utterly miserable.

There would never come a period of glowing and enjoying pregnancy for me and other sufferers of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a condition that affects less than one per cent of pregnant women. HG can be deined as a severe form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, but what separates it from morning sickness is that it prevents adequate intake of foods and luids. This leads to weight loss (usually over 10 per cent of pre-pregnancy weight), dehydration, nutritional deiciencies, metabolic problems, fatigue, and dificulty in concentrating. This leaves a pregnant woman debilitated and unable to conduct normal activities. The illness is not fully understood and there is no conclusive proof of its cause.

Friends and family who suggest dry crackers or ginger to help with the nausea may mean well, but unfortunately to manage HG requires quite aggressive medical treatment. As the cause is multi-factorial, treatment needs to be tailored to each individual and will usually consist of a number of medications taken together – often the same as those used to treat nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In severe cases medication is required intravenously and the pregnant woman will take luids and medications through an I.V. drip in hospital. The symptoms last well into the second trimester, and can last the entire nine months.

Sadly, women left untreated have terminated wanted pregnancies to end the misery. Since I have got to know some women with this horrible condition, I have learned it’s an unfortunately common story that many have not received the diagnosis and appropriate care they needed.

The upside of HG is that foetuses are incredibly tough and usually survive to become healthy babies, provided that mothers get appropriate medical treatment. When I was losing weight, I was amazed to see my beautiful baby healthy and moving around on the ultrasound screen. My HG eased a little after week 17, but though symptoms did get better, I continued to be ill and housebound through my entire pregnancy. I will be meeting my little one in early December

he event, supported by Parks Victoria, launched the Wattle Park Chalet’s weekend cafe and featured picnic hampers to be enjoyed in the parklands, a concert by the Melbourne Tramways Band, and stylish and original products in the Good Life Market. Established as Brown Prior & Co at 171 Queen Street, Melbourne

After incorporation as Brown Prior Anderson Pty Ltd the company moved into book production and became a pioneer of the fledgling Australian Book Production Industry.

Miehle letterpress machines and several linotypes were installed and Brown Prior Anderson developed a reputation for producing linotype work of very high quality.

t’s been a long time in business for Burwood based printing company BPA Print Group Pty Ltd. he company was founded in 1902 as Brown Prior & Co and originally located in Queen Street, Melbourne. In the 1920’s the business was incorporated as Brown Prior Anderson Pty Ltd and

moved into book production where they quickly became a pioneer of the ledgling Australian book production industry. In 1930 BPA moved to a new four storey factory at 430 Little Bourke Street. Ater 36 years in the city we made the big move to 5 Evans Street, Burwood in 1966 (now at number 11).

he business has enjoyed much success during its nearly 50 years in Burwood. We have acquired other printing businesses (for example, Jenkin Buxton Printers who were located on Middleborough Rd where the new OiceWorks is), we’ve won multiple prestigious printing awards and continue to invest in new technology but no event remains embedded in the minds of the owners and staf more than the ire which consumed its book binding business (he Bindery) in March 2006.

he siren of a ire truck was the irst warning sound that drew BPA staf out of the building at 11 Evans St where smoke and lames could be seen coming from the neighbouring building at 3 Evans St. Incredibly more than 40 ire ighters and 15 appliances battled the blaze at numbers 3-5.

It emerged that a clear beneit the Evans Street location was the extremely close proximity to the Fire Brigade and also the Police! his is a beneit that all members of the Burwood Community continue to enjoy today. he damage bill from the ire was in excess of $10m and led to the relocation of he Bindery (and 55 staf) to Mt Waverley.

Over the years BPA has invested heavily in both traditional ofset and new digital printing equipment and continues to employ in excess of 40 people in Burwood. Overseas printers and the internet have had an efect on the business but we have chosen to embrace the new technologies and develop innovative revenue streams. We now have a digital press that allows our clients to market their services to their current and future customers. his can be by email, SMS, print or PURL (personalised website). Called BPAmcm it is a cost efective and innovative approach to Multi Channel Marketing which is suitable for all businesses, large or small.

Hartwell Lives On

Glen Iris resident Volkhard Wehner, author of over a dozen books, has published his latest, a book with a title that

intrigues: Old Hartwell, the Life and Times of the Village that

Lost its Name with a foreword by Professor Geoffrey Blainey.“Lost its name?” you may ask. What can this mean? In

simple words, once upon a time there were two villages next to one another in the “Parish of Boroondara”. The Victorian Gazetteer for 1865 names both: one is called Camberwell, the other Hartwell. Both have a population of about 150. But over time, as Camberwell expanded, it gradually swallowed up Hartwell. Today there is no “village” or suburb of Hartwell any more, only what is called the “neighbourhood” of Hartwell. See? That explains the title.

Mr Wehner’s story starts with the Aborigines of the Kulin nation, who regularly visited the area of Hartwell when ish were plentiful, nutritious tubers could be harvested, and kangaroos hunted. But then came white men: irst squatters and timber-cutters, then settlers, and the land started to be subdivided. The book goes through the various phases of the 160 years of Hartwell’s history: when the irst school and church were built; when hunting clubs met and when the Outer Circle Railway was built.

Mr Wehner’s book isn’t just about buildings, but about people – including the Hartwell Players, Melbourne’s oldest amateur theatre group, and the Hartwell Motor Cycle Club, still going strong and one of the oldest and largest in the State.

There is much more: the countless “famous people” or high achievers who once lived or attended school in Hartwell, the numerous sports clubs that played on Hartwell’s sports facilities … the story goes on.

The book was launched with the assistance of Camberwell Historical Society on October 6 at the Hartwell Church of Christ. The Mayor of Boroondara attended and the honours were performed by one of Hartwell’s former residents (himself a noted former media personality) Don Kinsey, at one time “the voice” of radio station 3DB. Don ably and entertainingly conveyed the spirit of Volkhard’s book, which, while scholarly in its approach to history, never loses sight of the humanity that lies at its core.

Suddenly, in the midst of my browsing, I noticed that they were drawing the rales and there, large as life, was Bernadette! She had been asked, as special guest, to draw out the prizes.

Susan and I were so glad we decided to look in on the Buttonfest. And we know that Bernadette, who said she is a believer in fate, was glad too that she was right “on the button” with this event. Some of our Burwood Bulletin readers are right on the button. Take the case of Bernadette Biering ...

She was down in Melbourne, visiting from Brisbane, and having a cofee at he Orient Expresso in Mont Albert on a Saturday morning, coincidentally at the very moment I was there having breakfast with friends! Bernadette happened to notice a copy of our Burwood Bulletin sitting on the counter and decided to browse through it. Her attention was immediately caught by the advertisement for the Buttonfest, a once-a-year event held by the Victorian Button Collectors Club (VBCC) at the Burwood Heights Uniting Church.

Now Bernadette just happens to be a button collector from way back, starting at the age of eight years, when she was inspired by her Aunt Mary, who was the irst person, she said, to open her eyes “to all things beautiful, miniature and magical. Buttons!!”

So Bernadette could not believe her luck in inding that this annual display of buttons in Victoria was on the very weekend she was in Melbourne. Cofee was downed quickly, and of she set to ind the venue!

In the meantime, Susan Webster (another Burwood Bulletin committee member) and I had a rendezvous for the same event. No sooner had we arrived than we bumped into Bernadette, who was illed with enthusiasm for the button display and talking about the coincidence of seeing the advertisement in the Burwood Bulletin.

So we three connected and had great conversation, and in the process introduced ourselves to the very friendly president of the Victorian Button Collectors Club, Robyn Caddy, and some of the committee members. he whole room was bursting with buttons and conversation. Button people had come from all over Victoria. I met one lady called Cheryl who had brought buttons and curios all the way from Yackandanda. She said she comes every year. In fact, most of the stallholders do. And I met a few men at the venue too who were happily involved in button activities.Buttons of every shape, size and style were on display

Any other memories of the community?Marg: he neighbourhood in the past – we used to

look after one another. here was an elderly lady across the road and if she wasn’t very well the neighbour next-door or I would cook her a meal, or make her a cake, or look after her. he neighbour next door, he was wonderful – he was the nicest man. He was big, and he had a loud, booming voice [and] a big opinion on everything. It was his birthday on New Year’s Eve. We would have a party – here one New Year’s Eve, next [year] across the road; we would take it in turns.

Author’s postscript: Marg closed of the interview by kindly giving me a watercolour which she had painted. It portrayed a young boy ishing with his female companion by his side. he painting was called: “Are they biting?” I was honoured to receive such a precious gift from such kind people.

Bill and Marg Raymond: 60 years in Burwoodby Evan Papamichael

Bill and Marg Raymond both worked at Myer Melbourne in the early 1950s. his is where they met,

and sixty years and ive children (two boys and three girls) later they are celebrating the anniversary of their wedding at the Holy Trinity Church, in Kew. I spoke to them in September.

Marg: Our 60th wedding anniversary will be on the 4th of October. We won’t be having a big celebration for our wedding anniversary because we just had a big celebration. Bill just turned 85 at the end of August, then it was Fathers Day, and then early September it was my birthday, and I was 80. So two of our daughters got together and put on a surprise party for us, which was lovely. hey turned around and said “And don’t expect another turnout like that for your 60th wedding anniversary, because you’re not getting one!”

You’ve lived in Burwood a long time. Can you tell me some of your memories?

Bill: When we irst came here, we did not have any trams. We have been here forty years and we did not have any trams then. Public transport was a little bit so-so; there were not that many buses. So it was not easy to get around.

Marg: Yes! We had our youngest child who was attending kindergarten, which was around in Station Street; it’s not there any more. I did not have a big pram, I only had a pusher. And I would have to walk [miles] to do some shopping. It was a pain, because it was all uphill. Coming back home it was downhill and you had to hang on to the pusher, because you had a little kid – and the shopping! here were no trams [because] Burwood Highway was just narrow. One row of traic going west and one row of traic going east. here was a bus that used to go along Elgar Road and then up to Warrigal Road, but it was just as easy to put the kids into the pusher and go for a walk.

Can you tell us about your hobbies, or any clubs you have belonged to?

Bill: We both belonged for quite a number of years to the Bennettswood Lions Club. I am still involved, Marg occasionally. We’ve got an opportunity shop up in Toorak Road and I go there once a week, Marg goes occasionally. She used to be a regular when we were at Wattle Park. he Lions Club is kind of good because every bit of money they make goes back to the community. I was Vice-President there for a number of years. [We] gave … money to buy things like a bed at the Box Hill Hospital.

A Christmas Forest - Follow The Star

The Follow he Star display has been a feature of the pre-Christmas preparations at the Burwood Uniting Church (corner of Warrigal Road and Hyslop

Street) for eleven years. he display depicts the story of the irst Christmas with groups of igures, objects and settings crafted by members of the congregation. his year, the theme will be Jesus the Light of the World, and the display will feature Christmas candles and a Christmas Tree Forest. Local schools, groups and traders have been invited to decorate Christmas trees in this Christmas Tree Forest. A tree will be decorated by the church using Chrismons, hand-made decorations featuring symbols of Christmas.

he display will be open to the public from Friday, 7 to Saturday 15 December, (except for Sunday 9th), 12midday–5pm weekdays and 10am–3pm Saturdays. here is no entry charge but donations may be made to the Christmas Bowl Appeal.

In conjunction with the display, the Burwood and District Interchurch Council is holding the Burwood Christmas Festival at the church on 7 December, from 4.30–8pm. he festival will feature an interactive display of Australian birds, reptiles and marsupials provided by Animals of Oz (4.30–6pm) and Christmas music (7pm) by local choir, Treble Tones. here will also be face painting, food stalls, books and Christmas decorations. All proceeds from this festival go to the Christmas Bowl Appeal. he Follow the Star display will also be open during the festival and live “shepherds” and ‘Martin Luther’ will be available to talk to those viewing the display. The Friends of Foster Care Volunteer Program has been run by Anglicare for 15 years in the eastern suburbs,

covering Whitehorse, Maroondah, Manningham,

Boroondara, Monash and Yarra Ranges shires.

Program Co-ordinator Belinda Knight has 20-30 volunteers on her books at any one time and endeavours

to match them in their local community. Volunteers write a life history which is used for matching, and attend a training

session which focuses on issues affecting children in foster

care i.e. bonding and attachment, grief, loss and abuse.

Many children have “experienced trauma in their past,” said

Belinda, “we ensure that volunteers are made aware of this.”

Volunteers need no special qualiications, are 18 years and over and include university students, stay at home mums and

retired people. The minimum commitment is 4 hours per

month. The most important personal qualities needed are

commitment and the capability to care for a young person.

Volunteer activities include tutoring, mentoring (particularly of adolescents) and babysitting for foster carers.

There has been a decline recently in the number of people

undertaking foster care. The Friends of Foster Care Volunteer program provides people with a trial of foster care and often

acts as a stepping stone to becoming a foster carer.

Felicia and her husband Peter Lau initially heard about the program through their church and have been participants for

12 months. Both are employed full time but still manage to

ind time to care for one child on a monthly basis. “We ind it most rewarding to get to know the kids and it also helps

us bond as a couple by actively doing something together

with a purpose and a goal” said Felicia.

The program’s lexibility allows them to assist with one-off activities too, babysitting, mentoring and driving. They help

with various age groups and with children with a disability.

Felicia encourages anyone thinking about foster care to try

the program which is experiencing an increase in demand

for transportation of children to and from school and for

occasional babysitting for foster carers.

My Christmas Wish ListLions Club Christmas Cakes and Puddings

I’m so excited for Christmas! It’s almost here. I can’t wait

to decorate the tree. I can’t wait until the Christmas Eve

mass at church. I can’t wait until I wake up on Christmas

morning and see all the presents under the tree. I can’t wait

to see all my family and friends; to smell the turkey cooking

in the oven; to taste the custard on the pudding and to have

Christmas lunch with all the people I love most in the world.

I want a lot of things for Christmas, but what I really truly

want is something you can’t put under the tree. You can’t

wrap it up in paper and you can’t serve it up for lunch. I want

wars to end. I want peace to be brought to the world. I want

food, water and shelter for those who aren’t as lucky as us,

and for violence and bullying to be stopped.

I recently heard of Malala Yousufzai, a girl in Pakistan

who got shot for standing up for what she believed in. All

she wanted was an education, something that we take for

granted. I go to school and I really enjoy it. So I find it hard

to imagine what it is like for girls to be not allowed to go to

school. I wish people would understand the situation more

and do something about it. Mary Mackillop’s motto was “Don’t

see a need without doing something about it’’. I think that we

should all live up to that motto.

If you stand up for someone who is being bullied, or if you

give something to the poor, or you help someone in need

then you are giving a gift that is much more important than

anything you can buy in a shop.

A group of young artists, including

Tom Roberts, Frederick

McCubbin, Louis Abrahams,

Arthur Streeton and many others,

camped at a site known as “the

artists’ camp” directly behind the

current Box Hill South Neighbourhood

House (BHSNH). In 1891 their style of

landscape painting became known as

the “Heidelberg School” and in 1978 a

plaque was laid in commemoration by

the (then) City of Box Hill.

The BHSNH commenced art classes in 1992, with

a group of enthusiastic painters who are

locally known as the “Park Artists”. After

nine years the artists decided to exhibit

onsite to show their works, making them

available for viewing and purchase.

Watercolour is the principal medium for

these “Park Artists” and their long term

tutor, Patricia Turner, is a very skilled

painter herself. Many of the regular

artists’ works at the Neighbourhood

House are highly sought after each year.

Patricia teaches with enthusiasm and

shares her knowledge of the traditional

skills that were once commonplace in

Robert Burns wrote the lyrics to “Auld Lang Syne” in 1788.

Burwood Neighbourhood House

All preparations can be done, but the weather

can change all that! However, in good community spirit we went to plan B and had a full house – lots of visitors, food and great guest speakers. Mr Tom Thorpe spoke of his connection with the purchase of Number 1 Church Street for a Neighbourhood House. Margaret Crutch spoke about how she assisted as a Neighbourhood House and community service worker with the Box Hill Council, supporting the committee in the establishment of the House. Enid McKenzie, a Life Member and original committee member, spoke of the start of the house, the groups attending and the need for a neighbourhood house in Burwood.

All the groups at the House participated in an “art canvas project”, designing an art piece of their group or activity.

The Burwood Neighbourhood house is open

Our newest arrival is he Resident Cafe which opened after taking over the Herberts Pie and Cake shop. During that time much modiication has been wrought, with changes to the rear portion of the property, repainting and general redecoration. Now they have opened their doors to the paying public and serve breakfast and lunch using seasonal, local produce. Let’s hope locals appreciate the high quality produce he Resident Café strives to provide and support this venture. I do hope that they will suceed.

Ashburton will soon have another business ofering remedial massage and Dominoes Pizza is to open sometime in the future.

inspires creativity. No matter what level of singer you are,

the most important part about it is that you have fun.

My name is Sarah Morrison, and I opened my own home business earlier this year, Musical Kite

String – awe-inspiring vocals for those who love to sing! I have sung all my life and love spending time with family and my two-year-old son. I recently moved to Box Hill South and I would love to ofer you a free lesson if you would like to try singing.

As a vocalist and vocal coach, I specialise in singing lessons for mature age and young, budding singers. Ofering a friendly, encouraging and professional service, I hold lessons at my home in a purpose-built room, and tailor them to each individual. I enjoy teaching piano, singing at the senior choir at St Brigid’s Primary School in Mordialloc once a week, and in 2013 will ofer beginner piano lessons and assistance for beginner students through the AMEB exam process.

Musical Kite String (MKS) will have its irst end-of-year performance at Fairield Amphitheatre in December. It will provide a supportive and encouraging environment for students to showcase what they have learnt and gain valuable experience and self-conidence from performing in front of friends and family.

MKS aims to provide a fun and relaxed learning environment to encourage and inspire students, tailoring lessons to each individual.

he Melbourne Tramways Band’s 73rd annual concert season commenced in ine fashion on 14 October with an audience of over 400 people enjoying a wonderful sunny afternoon at Wattle Park. Sponsored by Yarra Trams, the free public concerts are presented monthly from October–April (except Jan). he Tramways Band is synonymous with the park and the concerts are a Melbourne institution, with successive generations of family members attending.

“Despite now being a community based group, we continue to take great pride in promoting Melbourne’s unique tramway heritage and fabulous public transport system,” says Executive Oicer, Ed Bright.
