T o say that sandra Wo o d l o v e s christmas and is an extraordinarily generous and caring
woman is an understatement. The 72-year-old Drummoyne resident sets aside up to seven weeks each year to deck the halls and decorate almost every square centimetre of her home for christmas, inside and out – all in readiness for her annual christmas party, which she hosted for neighbours and friends on November 25.
“I love christmas and every child gets a little something to take away. This is all for the children. I’ve done it for the kids in the area for about 12 years. They love it,” said the energetic sandra, who even has a smile and infectious laugh worthy of mrs claus.

resIDeNTs are up in arms over a large-scale development along railway Parade in burwood, which was not approved by burwood council says mayor, cr John Faker.
“This terrible eyesore, which can be seen all around sydney, casts a grave shadow over burwood’s heritage and progress,” says mayor Faker. “I cannot stress enough that council has never supported the design of the building or the magnitude of the development.”
Following the land sale by railcorp to developers, burwood council repeatedly rejected the development applications for the site, but council’s decision was over turned by the land and environment court in 2006 and 2008.
“council have voted in opposition to the development on several occasions and have consulted with the architect on the finishing of the building, which has design variations different to that, which was approved by the land and environment court,” says mayor Faker. “It’s not the standard we want in burwood.”
“We are seeking advice regarding what action we can take over the finishing and have called a meeting with the developer. Quite frankly, the buildings that went up in the 1970s and 80s are better looking than these ones.”
“The biggest mistake railcorp ever made was selling that land. The area should have been a bus interchange. If the land and environment court is going to approve buildings like this, then they should do so with high standards,” the mayor added.

Christmas is just around the corner and Burwood has dressed up for the occasion, creating a festive atmosphere for residents to enjoy this
holiday season.
For the first time, shops along Liverpool Road in Enfield and the Boulevarde in Strathfield will be decorated with beautiful Christmas garlands, joining the Town Centre and The Strand in Croydon.
The new additions will highlight Burwood’s attractiveness as a major centre in the Inner West and will bring the magic of Christmas to all the neighbourhoods in our great community.
Following on with tradition, the much loved Christmas tree in Burwood Park has returned and a newly decorated tree will welcome residents at The Strand.
Another popular Christmas tradition in Burwood is Carols in the Park, which will be held on Thursday, 13 December in Burwood Park at 5.00pm. I am pleased to announce that Rachael Leahcar, finalist from The Voice, will be headlining the event this year.

the spirit of GivingsaNDra WooD doesn’t have a few christmas decorations.
In the 44 years she’s lived in her Drummoyne home, she has accumulated three sheds full, a roof space crammed and every cupboard has to be emptied for the magnificent display she creates each year.
and why wouldn’t they love it? battery operated toys, lights, decorations, gifts and so much more, it’s bewildering at first, and a complete joy to behold. (I defy anyone not to go away smiling.)
“I gave myself seven weeks to get ready, working seven days a week but it only took me five weeks this year. That’s pretty good,” sandra declared as she gave us a grand tour through every room culminating in the outdoor area, which would leave anyone speechless, spell-bound and in awe.
“most of the lights are solar – isn’t that good?” she asked.
Not that sandra cares about the increased power costs. “The bill goes up a bit, but not that much. There’s no sense in worrying, is there?”
love has been in the air for sandra this year too (never say never!), after she met ernie on the bus to burwood.
“sandra is such a generous person and so kind to everyone. she does all this nearly by herself. I think she puts Disneyland to shame,” said the admiring ernie as sandra laughs before replying, “he’s got to put with me and all this!”
If you’re wondering how much sandra has spent over the years, she says, “Don’t ask, because I wouldn’t know. but I have been to every second-hand store and watch out for bargains.”

canada bay-based singers Naomi giselle and Kathryn Zerk will perform plenty of family classics including silent Night, The First Noel and away in a manger.
“carols in the Park has a great community atmosphere and I love being part of it,” said Naomi. “singing carols together makes it feel like christmas has really arrived.”
Naomi and Kathr yn are accomplished professional singers with extensive careers in australia and overseas.
“Now that we each have young families, it’s great to be able to support our local community and share our
favourite christmas songs, especially at such a family-friendly event,” said Kathryn.
These days, Naomi is a sought after for weddings and events and teaches singing to high school students, and Kathryn combines her performing schedule with her music and singing classes, inspiring and nurturing children through music education.
Kathryn teaches music at st mark’s Primary school in Drummoyne and conducts children’s choirs in lane cove and concord, and the children from her choirs will take the stage at carols in the Park for several songs. The corrective services NsW band will also accompany the singers, and a number of other performers will contribute on the night.
“being locals, singing as part of
carols in the Park is a fun way to contribute to the community,” said Naomi. “my children are counting the sleeps and are hoping to see santa on the night.”
Food, refreshments and glowsticks will be available for sale from 6pm and the carols will begin around 8pm.
carols in the Park is hosted by communities for communities and the city of canada bay council. Proceeds from the night will support the construction of houses and vocational training resources as part of the Klabat Project in bitung in northern Indonesia, in partnership with habitat for humanity.

The cITy of canada bay heritage society embarked on a new stage in its history after it was formally established at community meeting at Drummoyne civic hall last month.
residents are now being invited to get involved in the society as it gets to work on new projects.
“We need to promote and preserve the heritage of our community and through this society, we have an opportunity to preserve the local identity of canada bay for future generations,” said mayor angelo Tsirekas.
In 2009, Drummoyne and Districts historical society began working with
concord heritage society on the city of canada bay museum program and working towards a partnership with both societies. The city of canada bay heritage society has been formed following a merger of the concord heritage society and Drummoyne and Districts historical society.
The new heritage society hopes to attract and inspire new members and volunteers as well as encourage the donation of new materials to document and preserve the heritage of the area.

Through consultation it was revealed that 65 per cent of residents felt that improved parking at the village centre would enhance their shopping experience, while 81 per cent of businesses also supported better access and parking options.
Further investigation also revealed that a longer option of two-hour on-street parking was not offered in the shopping precinct. In response to this, city of canada bay has endorsed some changes to parking for a 12-month trial period.
These include changing the current one-hour parking in clermont lane between Davidson avenue and clermont avenue to two-hour parking. Two-hour parking between 9am to 3pm, monday to Friday and 8.30am to 12.30pm and saturday is now available at Davidson avenue, outside ardill house. a new disabled parking space is also available in the clermont lane car park.
additional recommendations currently being implemented are the installation of directional parking signage on concord road to encourage visitors to park in the clermont lane car park,
the replacement of a number of damaged and old street and parking signs, improved street lighting into clermont lane car park and surrounding streets and the removal of a tree at the northern end of the clermont lane car park to increase lighting and passive surveillance.
according to a release from the city of canada bay, these new arrangements will offer a better variety of parking options for the local community, and a safer shopping experience will assist in achieving the community’s plans for the revitalisation of North strathfield shopping village.

FouNDINg artistic Director marleen Nandi of Woodstock Players, the longest community theatre group in the burwood area, has criticised burwood council after the group was advised in July that they would no longer be able store their props at Woodstock community centre and were offered another council property in croydon Park
“Woodstock players began in 1984, under the auspices of burwood council, and is the only theatre group in the area producing shows for the residents,” ms Nandi said. “even though I am no longer on the management committee for the Players, I still support them. They are very unhappy about the move to what amounts to a tin shed in croydon Park.”
President of the group, rod chambers is equally disappointed.
“all our props and lighting are stored in Woodstock but burwood council has only offered what amounts to a tin shed in croydon Park that is open at the top and bottom, thus exposing people and equipment to weather conditions. There is no water, electricity, toilet or car park and public transport is difficult,” mr chambers said.
The volunteer Woodstock Players, who usually perform up to four productions a year in the 60-seat ballroom at Woodstock have not been on stage in 2012, but have put forward a schedule to burwood council for 2013.
“years ago there were community groups oozing out of Woodstock, but not anymore. Now it’s being run in a bureaucratic way by people who don’t care,” ms Nandi said.

“I have continued to support the Woodstock Players throughout my tenure as mayor,” cr. John Faker said. “We are unable to provide room for their props on site during the upgrades and have offered the Woodstock Players an alternative storage facility for their props at a site in croydon Park currently being used by council.”

but you can be up for break fees if you sell or refinance during

The reNoVaTIoNs to the former south strathfield bowling club on augusta street in strathfield have been completed with meals on Wheels moving in on monday November 19, prior to the official opening on December 3.
For cheryl brown, strathfield/homebush meals on Wheels coordinator, the new move is very welcome.
“The new premises on augusta street are wonderful. There is so much more room, which is really good for volunteers, making it easier to park and collect meals,” cheryl explained. “along with more office space and new furniture, we now have a dedicated packing room and storage area.”
The tranquil, inviting environment, overlooking newly landscaped and turfed areas will provide a much-needed community hub for various groups and organisations, thanks to a $500,000 state government grant towards the refurbishment.
one organisation relocating to augusta street from its run-down premises in burwood, is Inner West community Transport (IWcT), which will no longer have to park its buses and vehicles on residential streets.

benefit of local residents. “We are hoping that by moving
here and linking with Inner West community transport, meals on Wheels will be able to attract more clients,” she said.
meals on Wheels and its volunteers provide meals to people who are frail, aged, disabled and others, such as carers.
“The service is also good for people who are by themselves and could be recuperating from illness or injury, and who would otherwise not be able to get out of their home to get to the shops,” cheryl said.
“We’ve had men whose wives have passed away and we’ve provided meals because they’ve had no idea how to look after themselves.”

sWImmer annie Williams, who was a member of the swimming relay team that blitzed the favoured brits by 0.03 seconds in the london Paralympics in a thrilling gold for australia, came back to Plc sydney recently for a special assembly, delivering an inspired speech to students and guests on how it’s possible to succeed in sport and education.
The 24-year-old former Plc student, who is in her final semester of law and International relations at bond university in Queensland and currently an intern at a prestigious Washington Dc law firm, said the support she had from the college was pivotal in her success as an athlete and as a student.
“I missed six weeks at the beginning of the hsc in 2006. The hours that the teachers spent with me when I returned from overseas competition helped to get
me through. I had so much support,” annie said.
“It is a challenge to undertake full-time study and training, but I wouldn’t change a thing. The rewards are fabulous.”
“one of the key elements when you are young is to try everything and to be involved. give any sport you like a go. There’s no need to specialise early on. I didn’t focus on swimming until I was 17 years old,” annie told the students.
In the lead up to the london Paralympics, a typical day for annie would include ten sessions in the water each week, plus gym work. each day would start at 4am in the pool until 7am, then breakfast and university by 9.30am before returning to training for another three hours until 7pm.
“after 7 each night, that’s when I would read and do
assignments, plus I had to learn how to cook, clean and look after myself because I wasn’t at home anymore,” she said.
These days, annie is working within 50 metres of the White house in Washington.
“my internship in Washington is an incredible experience, as was my previous experience with ausTraDe in Paris.”
among the students listening to annie were newly selected australian youth olympic Festival athletes, diver Nancy Wang and gymnast rachel raskopoulos, along with rising swimmer chloe yoo, NsW hockey squad member and sports captain, ellie eagle and triple jumper, Josie Nichol.
The australian youth olympics, with over 1700 athletes from 30 nations in 17 sports will be held from January 16 to 20 at sydney olympic Park.

“as a 12-year-old, I would be in there cleaning windows or doing whatever was needed,” says
marco. “I was happy to go into the company when I left school, whereas my brother armando wanted to try his hand as a mechanic.”
“Dad (ernie) is very smart. he found one of the busiest workshops in the area, and a friend of his – Frank’s Pitstop in ashfield, and asked Frank to make sure his boy learned the value of work. after a year, armando came over to the family company and we’ve never looked back.”
“as a family we’ve always lived and breathed the business,” says the now father of three young children. “We do live for work and we talk about it at home.”
all the family, who grew up in ashbury, still live locally, and are
embedded in the area. The two sisters are both school teachers. Tilly – a distance education school teacher, still works in the business on saturdays, whilst rebecca teaches at st. mary’s kindergarten.
These days, ernie spends six months of the year in Italy, while angelina keeps an eye on the books in the office. however, their family foundation in providing service is constant.

burWooD girls high Parents & citizens’ association President, alice magoffin has written to burwood council’s mayor, John Faker expressing her disappointment over his mayoral minute at last week’s council meeting regarding the closed-off access to the Wangal Park development.
The NsW Department of education issued an order to burwood council that the temporary access road across the land behind burwood girls high was to be terminated and that burwood council would be required to turf the area.
cr. Faker’s mayoral minute resolved that burwood council’s general manager prepare a direct mail out to residents within the Wangal Park area informing them of the NsW government decision, including a written and on-line petition and that an urgent meeting be sought, through the state member for strathfield, mr charles casucelli, with the minister for education regarding the impact of education Department’s decision.
mrs magoffin put forward the school’s position defending its right to retain the land for exclusive use.
“This land (containing the
access road) belongs to burwood ghs. It is vested in the crown as inclosed land within the meaning of the education act, for the exclusive use of burwood girls high school. The minister for education recently declined to agree to the permanent use of the access road by the council as requested by the local member, charles casuscelli,” her letter to the mayor states.
“since the original closure of the brick pit it was made clear that the 1.1 hectares of land was purchased by DeT for the school in 2005. The remainder of the land was for burwood council to develop as recreational facilities for community use. many parents welcomed this initiative as it was seen as providing much needed recreational and sporting space for the school which had one small parcel of recreational space (a volleyball court) within its premises. In fact, many parents have since cited the additional recreational facilities provided by the land as being a major reason for deciding to send their daughters to the school.”
The strathfield state member was also quick to respond to
Faker’s mayoral minute. “I should remind you and
council that I have invested over a year of effort in supporting council’s position and some of the difficulties involved in this process of negotiation were a result of previous council actions. Nonetheless I was swayed by the merit of council’s plans and unreservedly committed my support,” mr casuscelli said in a letter to cr. Faker.
“your assertion in the press and in the mayoral minute tabled [last night] that you have been unable to get a meeting with the minister was misleading, you simply didn’t ask me. I do not agree with the minister’s decision and I believe that the education Department and the school is being unreasonable, I made that perfectly clear to the minister and council,” he said.
mr casuscelli further advised mayor Faker, “having read the mayoral minute I will be seeking a meeting for you with the minister, no need for a letter.”
The Department of education had advised burwood council in september that the NsW minister for education had written to mr casuscelli to say that he does not propose to overrule the wishes of the school community.

The caNaDa bay-based over 45s Inter lions soccer team roared victorious when they conquered the 2012 NsW champion of champions tournament last month.
The spectacular win saw the Inter lions knocking over the southern Districts association side in the final in a dramatic penalty shootout triumph at Valentine Park, headquarters of Football NsW.
core members of the team have been together for over a decade, and have won seven over 35 and two over 45 titles in division one during this time.
but try as they might, the NsW title had previously eluded them, reaching the semi finals on a handful of occasions but always falling short on the big day.

The INaugural bay biathlon held at rodd Point in perfect weather on sunday November 25, attracted nearly 100 participants for a 200m, 500m or 1200metre swim and 7km run. serious athletes, children, parents and grandparents braved the bay swim for a 7am start, before tackling the 7km run, with some taking the pace out hard whilst others were happy for a brisk walk.
For many, it was a first time experience and the event was declared a winner by organisers communities for communities.
“everyone has said that the event is fun to do and would do it again. We’ve also learned a lot for next year,” said communities for communities President, Jacque Weaver. “We are very grateful to organisers Dani andres and his
human endurance team for organising the first bay biathlon, and to our event sponsors the city of canada bay council, Warwick Williams real estate and burwood scene, as well as the many volunteers who came along to help.”
The bay biathlon raised $2,500, which will go towards habitat for humanity to assist 106 disadvantaged families who were displaced from their homes over 10 years ago due to internal conflict in the North maluku region of central Indonesia. These families fled to manado, the capital of North sulawesi as this was considered a safe haven.
