It is with great pleasure that I write the Principal’s report for our last newsletter for Term 2, 2016. What a fabulous term we have had at Manly Vale Public School and what a di- verse range of activities we have participated in. We have accomplished many things this first half of the year. Thank you for your support as a community in so many school events and extra-curricular activities. I would like to express sincere thanks to the P&C and PRG for their con- sistent effort and work this semester. The teachers deserve the highest of accolades for their care, professionalism and dedication to teaching our MVPS students and the many, many extra roles they have taken on. Some teachers, in- cluding our teacher’s aides, counsellors and RFF staff are rarely acknowledged publicly but we appreciate all they do. Our office staff is a most dedicated and hard-working team and on behalf of the school I would like to thank them for taking on so many extra ‘thankless’ jobs and responsibili- ties on top of their normal workload. This semester the students have proven many times how capable, kind and talented they are in a variety of circum- stances. They have thoroughly enjoyed opportunities given to them and have been excellent representatives of our ‘Caring and Sharing’ motto. As a reward for such hard work the Balgowlah Boys Band performed for the whole school and it was a lovely way to end the term. I wish all our families a safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to seeing you back at the beginning of term 3. The students resume Tuesday 19 July. Regional Cross Country to State Cross Country Congratulations to Zara Halliday who came 7 th in the 12 years regional cross country race and placed first reserve for the state carnival. Congratulations to Mali Lovell who came 1 st in the para-athlete division and will be represent- ing our school and region at the state carnival. We are so proud of you both and love your outstanding achievements. Parliament House Leader’s Morning Tea It was an absolute pleasure to trav- el with our four School Captains and Vice Captains to Parliament House on Monday to have morning tea with the Honourable Mr Mike Baird. Our leaders presented beau- tifully in their school blazers and thoroughly enjoyed learning about State Parliament and how our State Government system works. Mr Baird answered questions posed by our leaders and enjoyed an informal chat with all the leaders from the schools in the Manly electorate. Mr Baird then issued a challenge for each school to write and present a speech on the topic ‘If I were elected as Prime Minister on Saturday I would…’ Logan Sengchanh, Katia Bjorkmann, Tom Freeman and Olivia Inkster wrote and confidently delivered a moving speech about the need for Australia to be a diverse country that looks after refu- gees and supports equality for minority groups. The speech was outstanding and won the speech competition! Congratulations to our lead- ers who represented our school perfectly. National Consistent Collection Data NCCD This term we have completed the National Consistent Col- lection of Data for students with disability. This is an annu- al collection and a requirement of the Department of Edu- cation. The national data collection counts students who have been identified by a school team as receiving an ad- justment to address a disability under the Disability Dis- crimination Act 1992 (the DDA). More information about this collection can be found on our school website. Thank you to our Learning Support teacher Mrs Karen Bellamy and the classroom teachers who have collected the data. the Sydney North Dance Concert and twice at our school dance concerts. Being in so many performances and re-hearsals prior is a gruelling expectation and has proven worthwhile. We are so proud of the dancers and their efforts as a team. Michael Jackson lives on and our Man-ly Vale students certainly proved that!!! I would like to acknowledge and thank the work of parents who helped and most importantly the two teachers who worked so hard to inspire our ensemble groups to be so amazing. Thank you Miss Panetta and Miss Durazza for your time, effort and love of dance which we have greatly appreciat-ed. MVPS K-2 & 3-6 Dance Concerts

On Tuesday I asked Hayden (new to 2K) whether he en-joyed the dance concert. He emphatically replied, “I loved it because I’ve never been on stage before.” What a fabulous

opportunity every Manly Vale student has had! Like the ensemble dances, the class dances were spectacular, fun and energetic. Thank you again to Miss Panetta and Miss Durazza for organising the concert. Thank you par-ents for your involvement with costumes, face painting and audience support. Thank you to the teachers for be-ing supportive, enthusiastic and integral in our dance pro-gram and for ensuring each child was prepared this week. Most importantly we thank Mrs Lyn Orrick for an outstanding culmination of two terms worth of dance les-sons. Every week our students have been encouraged to participate in different dances and learn something per-haps outside their ‘comfort zone’. The concert highlighted this and allowed every student a moment in the spotlight. We wish Lyn all the best for the rest of the year and ap-preciate her dance expertise and teaching in semester 1. Thank you to Mr Kovel for filming the dance concerts. Flexischool payments will be set up shortly. You can purchase a DVD at the front office until it’s ready. The $10 per DVD is to be given as fundraising for Rasmata our World Vision sponsor child. Enrichment Programs Several of our students have been invited to participate in enrichment activities and programs this semester. I would like to acknowledge the work of our ‘HOT’ (Higher Order Thinking) team for organising extra-curricular pro-grams within classes and outside the school. Mrs Katrina Kemp has been integral in this and we are very thankful for all she does. Several of our students attended the GATEWAYS Extreme Maths Workshop and the Sydney

Office Manager of the program sent an email to acknowledge our students, their responsible and respect-ful behaviour and enthusiasm. The following students were mentioned for being ‘stand out’ presenters for the day; Jake Van-De-Water, Thomas Bradley, Oliver Sher-lock and Charlie Kanu. Well done boys. School Tour A school tour for any prospective kindergarten and MVPS families will take place tomorrow at 12:30pm. The tour group will meet in the front office foyer. Academic Semester 1 Reports Yesterday reports were handed out. Our academic re-ports are based on curriculum outcomes and outline what your child/ren can do at a particular point in time. They are a useful document to keep for high school entry and for you to see your child’s academic progression through-out school. The teachers have spent many extra hours writing and editing reports and I’d like to thank them for their deep knowledge of each student and the curriculum areas they have reported on. Staff Development Day Our teaching staff is very excited to be working with Pro-fessor Robyn Ewing from Sydney University on our Staff Development day beginning term 3. Robyn will be pre-senting on the new English syllabus and specifically shar-ing her expertise in incorporating drama, imaginative texts and teaching ideas into our programming. She will then be working with stage teams and supporting us to write conceptual programs reflecting innovative practices. On Your Soap Box Speeches All students should have received notes regarding our school speech competition that will be held next term. Please ensure your child is well prepared with a speech on one of the topics provided. This is another excellent program every student K-6 is involved in. A stage 2 & stage 3 winner will represent our school at the ‘Bear Pit’ public speaking competition at Parliament House on Mon-day 15 August. Band Camp Ms Fisk and Miss Hall along with the Band Committee and conductors have had a busy semester with various performances and preparation for Band Camp which starts Friday 22 July. Both Junior and Senior band stu-dents will have the opportunity to work closely with talent-ed tutors over the weekend to improve their music skills. They will also be involved in an indigenous workshop and performance on the Saturday evening. The camp is set to be a wonderful experience for all band members and we look forward to hearing them play their new pieces during term 3.

REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY

Last Friday Zara Halliday and Mali Lovell compet-ed at the Regional Cross Country Carnival at Gosford. These two girls ran amazingly, repre-senting Manly PSSA and Manly Vale Public School.

Mali won the para athlete division 2km cross coun-try race. Zara came 7th in the 12 year girls race. Mali is representing the region at the State Carni-val on 22nd July. Zara is first reserve.

Well done girls and good luck Mali!

CHESS CLUB Manly Vale hosted Collaroy Plateau

in round 8 of the NSWJCL.

Our Junior Rookies (Tom Stevens, Rory Edgerton, Milo Wolf-Daffy & Josh Turner) were defeated 3 1/2 - 1/2 by a skillful team, with

Tom narrowly missing out on a win with a stalemate.

A special mention to Natalie (Josh's mum) and Tracey (Milo's mum) who provided a wonderful

afternoon tea.

SICK BAY If you have any old school uniforms Sick Bay would appreciate the donation.
