Our first student of the week this year is Owen - 7 Ash. Owen is an exceptional student with an enthusiastic, hard-working and mature attitude. He is always willing to help teachers and students and always goes that extra mile. He has accumulated over 100 achievement points this year, which is superb! Well done Owen, keep up the amazing work and no doubt you will achieve great things!

Elodie 13Elm Our KS5 student of the week this week is Elodie who is currently in Year 13. She has been awarded this for her outstanding attitude to learning scores, scoring an outstanding grade of 7 in each of her subjects. Language is empowering Our first word of the week for 2016 is ‘superlative’. We have been exploring different meanings and when we can use them to enhance our writing.

Y7 Student Receptionist of the Term – Autumn 2015

Year 7 began their time as student receptionists after the half term break in October and they have got off to a flying start. Well done and thank you to students in 7Ash, 7Beech and 7Elm who have all been fabulous. A special thanks however goes to Bradley who is our receptionist of the term for the second half of the Autumn term. Bradley’s willingness to go the extra mile and his cheerful personality won us both over. In recognition of his hard work, Bradley has been awarded 10 achievements points together with a certificate of acknowledgement. Thank you to Bradley and well done. Mrs Nealon and Mrs Biggerstaff

Arranging Medical Appointments for your Children? Mr Turner, Executive Principal

On the rare occasions where this is impossible to do so, please make every effort to arrange the appointment for as limited time as possible during the morning session of school. Where possible, do ensure that your child actually attends morning registration (and is therefore marked present and not absent for that session). In addition please ensure that they return well before the afternoon school session and again are able to attend school in the afternoon and therefore be marked present for that afternoon session. Although clearly some lessons will be missed and your child will have to catch up with the work, following this guidance will help to maintain your child’s 100% attendance record in school. It will also ensure that our very good school attendance figures are maintained at the highest level.

SAFETY AT THE SCHOOL GATES

In our quest to ensure the school is a safe place for our student body, one area that we need to continue to work together on is ensuring that the start and end of the school day is as safe as possible, and I would like to thank all parents for their ongoing consideration when dropping or picking up their children from school. Inevitably the school entrance is the busiest place and needs to be avoided by vehicles to ensure the safety of our children. Again I would like to thank the majority of parents for parking a reasonable distance away and encouraging their children to walk the final part of their journey. As you are aware, Coldharbour Lane is a very busy through route, particularly during the morning rush hour. Visibility is a problem due to the curve of the road, which is sometimes exacerbated by cars parking right outside or close to the school gates. Please do continue to drive slowly, park some distance from the school entrance and be considerate for the safety of all our students. What is much improved is the bus turning bay which is now a much safer place for our students to walk across. Please do not attempt to turn into this area to collect or drop off your child as this will have a negative effect on the safety of all our students, no matter how slowly and carefully one drives. Many thanks for your continued support. Mr Turner

All parents and carers know that there is a very strong correlation between attendance and achievement. It is a proven fact that students with 100% attendance do better in school, achieve the best results and make most progress. With that in mind, all medical appointments should be arranged after school hours or during school holidays.

Mr Tuner, Executive Principal

The dynamic IT Technicians at Bushey Meads were working very hard before the Christmas holidays to install a superb state of the art apple mac music technology suite in the music department at the school.

The technology suite has really enhanced the music provision at the school and will enable even more students to excel at their studies in this important area of the school curriculum.

Head of Music and Music Coordinator across the Trust, Sarah Brown is delighted with the new facilities which will help so many students develop their compositional and sequencing skills.

YEAR 7 HOUSE CHRISTMAS PARTY

Mr Turner – Executive Principal

On Wednesday 16th December 120 Year 7 students attended the House Christmas party organised by the Heads of House to celebrate the end of their first term at Bushey Meads School. The party started with some balloon games followed by a competition to create the best snowman out of tissue paper. The party rounded off with

refreshments and dancing. Great fun was had by all and a lovely end to the first term for Year 7 students.

Mr. Back - LRC Manager and Religious Education Teacher

At the end of the autumn term my Religious Education class 071/RE2 were completing an additional home learning task to create their own version of a stained glass

church window. As you can see from the photograph below the pupils have produced a fantastic project of which they are very proud. Many thanks to Ms. Bennett our Art Technician for designing the template, and congratulations to all the pupils in 071/RE2 who have really enhanced our classroom in F2 with their beautiful work.

Getting ready for the balloon team game to start.

Being turned into a snowman!

Some finished snowmen! Showing off the dance moves!

S. Cooper – PE Teacher

On Wednesday 6th January year 8 students were treated to an inspirational assembly led by former English Disabled athlete Chris Rattenbury.

Chris is an ambassador for the charity Wheelpower; who helped to fund wheelchairs, enabling disabled people to participate in sport.

Year 8 listened intently to Chris’ story into sport. Chris has been in a wheelchair since birth and he went to a mainstream secondary school but was often withdrawn from PE at school. Chris enjoyed sports but never really wanted to be an athlete. This all changed when he participated in the disabled games at Stoke Mandeville (regularly attended by students at Bushey Meads). At the games, with the support of Wheelpower, he embraced new challenges and eventually went on to win a powerlifting gold medal at the

commonwealth games.

Why did Chris speak to the students at Bushey Meads?

On Thursday February 4th (Enrichment day), Year 8 students will be participating in an event to raise money to support Wheelpower. Students will participate in a wheelchair obstacle course, and experience the challenges posed by those who rely on wheelchairs in their daily lives.

In support of the charity, students are being asked to raise sponsorship to participate in the activity. If students raise £6, a disabled person could participate in an hour’s wheelchair sport. By collectively raising £470 year, 8 could provide the opportunity for a student to attend the Stoke Mandeville games for a week. It costs a minimum of £3000 for a disabled person to have their own sports wheelchair, far more than the average pair of trainers…….

What happens now?

Students will all receive a sponsor form and letter explaining in more detail about the event. They will then be asked to raise sponsorship money to support this fantastic charity, which assists students at Bushey Meads. Sponsor money MUST be returned to the main office at school by Friday 29th January.

The link below provides further information on the wheelchair event to be held at Bushey Meads School, and the opportunities Wheelpower help to provide. http://www.wheelpower.org.uk/WPower/index.cfm/news/wheelpower-relay-challenge/
