March 2015 Message from the Chair – Greetings Everyone! I am sometimes annoyed when people say, “Time just keeps going faster and faster”. Well, I never realized just how fast Time flies until all of a sudden it’s Time to write the monthly column for the Advocate again! As I write this, it’s Time for Unity in the Community - February 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Plaza Conference Center. I hope you were able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to visit with our local officials, regional elected officials and legislators. Did you meet the many people who displayed information about their city, their business, their non-profit organization and many other amazing endeavors throughout our area? If Time was against you and you were unable attend this great event, I will cover some of the highlights in my next report! Now, it’s Time to turn our attention to the issues before the current State Legislature and be watchful of those matters that can affect our businesses in the area. The Chamber’s Public Policy Committee (PPC) has reviewed and is currently monitoring three Bills. The first is House Bill 15-1154 which prohibits the collection of an Interchange Fee defined as a fee established by a payment card network for the purpose of compensating the issuer of a credit or debit card on the portion of the total price that is a state or a local government tax. The PPC is also monitoring Senate Bill 91 and House Bill 1057. Upon recommendation from the PPC to the Board of Directors, the Board has taken a support position on Senate Bill 177 which, if passed, will fix some barriers to attainable and affordable home ownership. The PPC also plans to look at House Bill 1119 which requires municipalities that ban hydraulic fracturing to pay royalties to owners of mineral rights. Stay tuned. Speaking of good Timing, the Chamber Board of Directors, at its monthly meeting in February, were given an excellent presentation by Pinnacol Assurance insurance regarding the value to Chamber members of being in the Workmen’s Compensation Safety Group Program sponsored by our Chamber. If you’re not familiar with or currently taking advantage of this program, you should call Kathy Stevens (720-864-2871) at the Chamber to see how you can participate in this great program! Chamber members in the program receive a 4% discount on their workers comp insurance through Pinnacol and can receive a dividend from Pinnacol when the group performs well. Take the Time to check out this money- saving program available only to Chamber members. So until next Time...have a super month! THANK YOU to our sponsors for another successful Unity Event!
