OUR Leaders OUR Staff

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jack Pisano, and I am the Tempe Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board for FY 2013. I would like to thank Dave Long from Edward Jones for his excellent service as Chairman this past year.

I am the General Manager for Veolia Transportation, which operates the transit system for the City of Tempe. I have been in this position for the past five years and have come to love the state and the city of Tempe, the place we spend a lot of our time either working or engaging in recreation.

Usually the first thing someone asks me after we meet is, “Are you from New York?”, as my accent tends to identify me. The funny thing is that I have lived in the West, California and Arizona much longer than I lived in New York or New Jersey. I left for the Navy in 1968 and except for a brief period after I was honorably discharged I’ve been living in the West continuously. I do not miss the cold winters back East at all, and even with our formidable heat, I’ll take four months of hot weather for eight months of great weather. You’ll notice I didn’t say warm like the weather prognosticators do. It always makes me smile when the weather person says it’s going to be “sunny and warm.” It’s not warm – it’s hot. I’ll take the heat over snow anytime; I just try to get an early tee time!

That’s enough about me, let me talk about this wonderful organization we are all a part of – the Tempe Chamber of Commerce. I love our slogan: “Your Success is Our Business.” And it really is! Everything we focus on accomplishing in the Chamber, whether it is advocating for a certain bill in government or promoting one of our member businesses, is meant to make sure our members are successful. It is important to us that you succeed, especially in these economic times. The indicators are starting to look up again, and hopefully we are finally on the road to recovery.

We have a wonderful website, www.tempechamber.org, where you can read about member accomplishments, the latest business news, upcoming events and member benefits. Speaking of upcoming events, don’t miss our Annual Luncheon on July 13. Pedro Gomez from ESPN will be our guest speaker. I’m sure you will enjoy his comments about sports and life in general. For more information, call the Chamber at (480) 967-7891 or register online at www.tempechamber.org. There are also sponsorship options available. We hope to see you there!

In conclusion, we live and work in a wonderful city, and we have a great organization, the Tempe Chamber of Commerce. An organization is only as good as its members, and we have a lot to be proud of! Take advantage of all that the Chamber can provide for your business and, when the opportunity arises, purchase goods and services from our members. Help their business thrive because, as previously mentioned, “Your Success is Our Business.” Here’s to a great year!

Sincerely,

Introductions

can cut those costs by as much as 35%! You’ll also save on cooling costs and be more

comfortable, because new lights emit less heat. SRP rebates help offset the initial cost of

projects and provide a quick return on investment. Complete an application, install the new

equipment and watch the savings roll in.

At the June 13 Military Affairs Committee luncheon, we honored SGT Jonathan Siercke of the 996th Area Support Medical Company Training NCO. Last year he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his exceptionally meritorious achievement and outstanding professionalism, technical expertise, Spanish language skills and dedication to duty during the 996th ASMC’s support of Beyond the Horizon 2011. He recently returned from a year-long deployment in Egypt where he was assigned as a lab NCOIC and put SOPs into place that improved lab day-to-day operations. Congratulations SGT. Siercke, and thank you for your outstanding service!

Fred Pratt, general manager of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites located at 1031 E. Apache Blvd., celebrated the hotel’s membership with the Tempe Chamber with a recent ribbon cutting. The newly renovated property is conveniently located by ASU and the Light Rail system. The Ambassadors were wowed by a tour of the lobby and rooms and enjoyed a delicious complimentary breakfast. For more information about the property, please call (480) 966-7207.

The East Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance named Senators John McComish and Michele Reagan, and Representatives Steve Court, Jeff Dial, Frank Pratt, Bob Robson, Michelle Ugenti and Steve Urie Business Champions for supporting businesses and the EVCCA 100% in the 2012 legislative session.

“We are pleased with the number of legislators who received a 100% ranking this year,” announced JW Rayhons, chair of the EVCCA. “The majority of our East Valley legislators received 80% or better this year as well. These results represent much more than just a simple report card; they represent a commitment to improving the business environment in Arizona.”

Those who received an 80% or better ranking were named Friends of Business: Senators Nancy Barto, Andy Biggs, Rich Crandall, Jerry Lewis, Steve Smith and Steve Yarbrough; and Representatives Cecil Ash, Heather Carter, Eddie Farnsworth, John Fillmore, Tom Forese, John Kavanagh, J.D. Mesnard, Justin Olson, Justin Pierce and David Burnell Smith.

The East Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance (EVCCA) represents more than 5,500 member firms from the Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek, Scottsdale and Tempe chambers of commerce. The EVCCA collaborates to advance the common business interests in the East Valley.

Last December, East Valley legislators were presented with the EVCCA’s annual Legislative Priorities document to provide a foundation for session priorities. Members from each of the chambers met on a weekly and monthly basis during the session to review bills introduced and evaluate their impact on the business community.

Dorn Policy Group, the EVCCA lobbyist firm, tracked bills the EVCCA took specific action on by signing in at the hearings, one-on-one conversations and, at times, formal letters. At the end of the session, each East Valley legislator is graded on whether they agreed with the EVCCA position or opposed. Not appearing to vote on an issue is counted as an opposition to the EVCCA’s position. A report card is published with the results of our legislators’ votes.

East Valley Chambers Acknowledge 2012 Legislators as Business Champions and Friends of Business
