Brighton-based Midnight Communications was named the fastest growing tech PR agency in the country by PR Week and is now ranked as No 27 in the UK. IT LOOKS like the kind of thing Bones would use to treat Captain Kirk and that’s not a million light years from the truth. The Pain Genie is more Soviet than Star Trek, however, as it is based on technology invented by Russian scientists to help cosmo- nauts during the Cold War. The result of this multimillion- pound research was Scenar (Self Controlled Energo Neuro Adap- tive Regulation), a revolutionary way to treat pain without using drugs. It uses complex patented soft- ware that initiates a process called biofeedback between the point of pain and the brain. Now a West Sussex company has incorporated the technology into a hand-held device no bigger than a TV remote control and powered by a standard battery. The people behind Pain Genie, based in Worthing, claim that almost anyone can use it any- where to bring near-instant, drug-free pain relief to injuries, aches or stiffness. Former IT specialist Richard Cumbers is the driving force behind the product. He was brought up in the Middle East, where they are much more aware of holistic remedies such as acupuncture to treat pain. He found out about Scenar about ten years ago but didn’t believe it could work until he tried it him- self. Mr Cumbers said: “I met up with a Russian doctor who had the device. I had had a pain in my knee for about 18 months which was stopping me playing tennis. “I had a three-and-a-half minute treatment and walked out feeling great. Later on I felt a bit of pain again so was unsure but I about two weeks later I was invited for a game of tennis. “It was only when I was in the bath after the game I realised I hadn’t felt any pain. It was a bit of a eureka moment.” Mr Cumbers teamed up with Mick Coyne after their daughters met at school. Mr Coyne was convinced to go into business after he was treated for an old shoulder injury. Together they set up Pain Genie, the only British business licensed to distributed the Scenar technology. For further details, go to www.paingenie.net.
