Thank a School Board Member

Texans benefit every day from the tire-

less work and countless hours contrib-

uted by a group of more than 7,300

men and women in communities across

the state. These local volunteers are

elected by their constituents and re-

ceive no compensation for their work

as public servants. These men and

women are the school board members

of Texas.

January is School Board Recognition

Month and George West ISD took this

opportunity to thank these local lead-

ers for devoting time to support public

education and serve our local schools.

It’s more important than ever before

that the public shows support for public

education. Board members face critical challenges in their roles as advocates, and they

will continue to stand strong and guard against anything that takes away from our chil-

dren and undermines our public schools

Even though we are making a special effort in January to show appreciation to our board

members, we realize their many contributions reflect a year-round commitment. They

generously give of themselves to ensure that decisions directly affecting our local schools

are made by representatives of this community, people who are close to our schools and

know our teachers, parents, and students. In these challenging times, they face difficult

choices and shoulder critical responsibilities. Their ultimate goal is always focused on the

future success of the children in our district.

A Few Thoughts on Testing~

Often I am asked how a student can do well on the State Assessment (TAKS/STAAR). I wish there was a quick an-swer, but there really isn’t. The strongest steps a student can take in order to be prepared for these exams is to attend school daily and participate in the learning. Doing the projects assigned, participating in class discussions, doing homework, attending tutorials all help establish that foundation. To be prepared for the STAAR requires a daily commitment to school. Parents can help by not taking a family trip during school days, scheduling medical appointments for early in the day or late in the afternoon to maximize class time. Being to class on time is also extremely important. Also vitally important are a good, nutritious breakfast every day—not just “test days”. Empty calories do not help a brain function at a top level. A student needs food to provide energy to the body and brain. Additionally, a student needs sleep and exercise to consistently be ready for learning. It is helpful to be on a regu-lar sleep schedule, and most children need nine to ten hours of sleep a day. Exercise increases oxygen to the brain which helps with thinking and memory. Lastly, parents can work with their children to overcome test anxiety. State mandated tests have been known to not only produce stress in children, but in their teachers and principals, as well. However, to make the best of a testing situation, please remember, that a good night’s sleep will produce far better results than an extra hour of cramming. Studies have shown that last-minute cramming rarely works. Another important tip is to read all di-rections carefully, and read each question carefully. Many errors are made by just not reading the question cor-rectly. I am confident that the staff at GWISD has worked extremely hard to prepare your child for the assessments ahead. We will continue to prepare your child for successes of all kinds. Thank you for working with us to help educate your child.

We are very proud of the sponsors and participants and thank you for representing our school in a positive

manner.

In other news, Kinder, First, and Second grade teachers have recently completed mid-year TPRI and Star

reading assessments. If you have any questions about those results please see your child’s teacher. Stu-

dents should be developed on all skills and reading at the expected words per minute in order to be prepared

for the next grade level. Students who are not performing as expected will be assigned to the Jump Start

Reading program in the summer.

Third graders are working hard as they prepare for the first STAAR test of their educational career. They

recently completed their 3rd benchmark of the year. Parent reports are sent home after every benchmark.

Students who do not pass the STAAR test this year will be assigned to summer school.

Thanks to the generosity of LOC Child Welfare Board, a nationally known speaker, Brooks Gibbs brought

anti-bullying strategies to students and parents. These strategies added to the positive school climate the

staff has culminated over the years. Be on the lookout for G.W. Primary students to share these concepts via

displays at local businesses in the coming months.

Home & School Stephanie Schuette, Elementary Counselor

The Elementary campus, teachers and students, have been working diligently to become an Exemplary

campus, which means we must have a 90% passing rate in all areas. This can be done with your help.

The students are learning many different strategies to help them prove their answers. Ask them to

show you, have them teach you an UPSE (a math strategy that stands for understand, plan, solve, and

explain). Having them teach you and show you what they know is an excellent way to overcome test

anxiety and boost their confidence. We have every confidence that they will do well and are prepared.

Attendance becomes an issue with many students this time of year and we cannot stress the impor-

tance of your children being at school every day. Parents please keep up the good work with this. We

know that you have impressed on your children that there is no substitute for being at school and in the

classroom. Thank you parents for helping us by making sure your children attend school and tutorials,

get plenty of sleep, eat well, exercise, and have an organized place to study and complete homework.

Counselor’s Corner Miss Grimes has begun a group for 8th grade girls after school. The group will meet on Wednesday after-noons from 3:05-4 in the “white house” and will run for seven weeks. We will be following a curriculum written by Rosalind Wiseman which uses a combination of group discus-sions, games, role-playing, and other activities designed to engage students in understanding the complexi-ties of adolescent social culture. The 8th grade girls were given a parent permission letter on January 23 and needed to have it signed and returned to Miss Grimes by January 29 if they were interested in participating in this group. I look forward to this opportunity to work with the 8th grade girls! Mrs. Grimes

Congratulations to all UIL Participants! The official results are in! George West placed 2nd behind Skidmore-Tynan at this year’s District UIL meet. Again, thank you to all of the students who were involved in some way! Our students did a fantastic job participating and representing George West at the UIL meet on Saturday, January 12, which was held in Mathis. Fifty-six students from grades 6-8 participated in at least one UIL event (either in-house or at the meet in Mathis). George West came away with 15 first place medals, 12 second place medals, 10 third place medals, 8 fourth places, 6 fifth places, and 4 sixth places. A big thank you to all of the UIL coaches, participants, and parents!

Register Tapes for Education George West Junior High is participating in the “Register Tapes for Education” program sponsored by Lowe’s (food stores – formerly Super S), Fiesta Foods, Big 8 Food Stores, Super Save, and Avanza Supermar-ket. Thanks to the communities help, we have collected over $310,000 in tape register receipts. We will continue collecting tape register receipts through March 31, 2013. You may turn in your receipts to the Junior High office, give them to any JH student, mail them to 900 Houston Street, or DROP THEM OFF IN THE BOX AT THE LOWE’S CASH REGISTERS. Thank you for your continued support! For complete contest rules, please visit www.shoppercredit.com/shoppercontest. We have set our goal high this year and would like to collect over $1.7 million for a class set of iPads or other needed items.
