world and occupies a large portion of South America. Brazil lies between latitudes 6°N and 34°S, and longitudes 28°E and 74°W.

CULTURE The main predominant religion Roman

Catholicism. It developed distinctive styles, among

them samba, MPB, choro, Sertanejo, brega, forró, frevo, maracatu, bossa nova, and axé.

Their special holidays are: April 21- Tiradentes Day and October 12- Our Lady of Aparecida.

The ethnicity background is…Whites 47.3%, Brown(multiracial) 43.1%, Black 7.6%, Asian 2.1%, and Amerindian 0.3%.

tucupi tacacá, caruru, vatapá and maniçoba; the Northeast is known for moqueca (having seafood and palm oil), and acarajé (the salted muffin made with white beans, onion and fried in oil palm (dendê) which is filled with dried shrimp, red pepper), manioc, diz, hominy, dumpling and Quibebe.

FLAG The Brazilian flag was adopted on

November 15, 1889. The green symbolizes their fields and

forest. The yellow symbolizes their wealth in

gold. In the center floats a blue celestial globe

with 27 white stars each one representing each state and federal districts.

The white band across the globe has the motto “Ordem E Progresso” in translation it means Order and Progress.

HISTORY The city of Rio de Janeiro proper was

founded by the Portuguese on March 1, 1565 and was named São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, in honor of St. Sebastian, the saint who was the namesake and patron of the then Portuguese Monarch D. Sebastião. Rio de Janeiro was the name of Guanabara Bay.
