E X P E R I E N C EIt has been an exciting year at Central Catholic as we have expanded from two to three weekend retreats due to increased student interest, added an orchestra club to our music department and have made five State appearances so far this year, including a first place finish in girl’s singles tennis.

We are also excited to share with you this first issue of Central Catholic, our alumni and constituent publication. It is our desire to continue to foster the great relationships that have been formed over the years at Central Catholic. We hope to reconnect with many we have not spoken with recently, as well as share “our story” with one another in the years to come. We have a rich tradition at Central Catholic with so many powerful stories to tell.

The Central Catholic experience is one to cherish and we look forward to celebrating our successes together with you. This is my eighth year at Central Catholic and I can truly say it has been a privilege to become a member of the Central Catholic family. We remain committed to serving the mission of Central Catholic and we are enthusiastic about our bright future. The success we have at Central Catholic is because of our community’s trust and support. I humbly thank you for ensuring this success.

May God bless you and your family,

Sean Foster, Principal

“I believe that faith-based education is the best thing for my family and for all children, and that’s why we are at Central Catholic.”

Central Catholic High School has always benefited from the selfless contributions of

time, talent, and financial donations from families and alumni in the school community; the new Student Center and Welcome Center that opened in fall of 2015 are no exception. “After all,” says Central Principal Sean Foster, "the building itself and the land that it rests upon are a result of the generosity of our parents, alumni, friends, and local parishes."

It is a typical weekday afternoon in the newly-renovated Student Center at Central Catholic High School. In one corner of the large, well-furnished room, small groups of students sit comfortably on a curved sofa and laugh as they recount stories from the recent school day. “It is comfy and relaxing,” comments Central sophomore Olivia Fulk. “It’s a good place to do homework, and it makes school feel more homey.” In another corner, some friends huddle together in a circle and take turns holding up flashcards in order to study for an upcoming test. On the other side of the pleasantly-decorated room, quite a few students sit at smooth wooden tables and complete homework on their laptops. “It’s nice to have time at the end of the day to do my homework,” says freshman Ivan Vazquez. “It’s too loud in the Commons (cafeteria), and there are fewer distractions.”

Down the hall, not too far from where students are working and interacting with each other in the Student Center, Central Catholic Principal Sean Foster sits down to speak with a prospective family in another recently refurbished room known as the Welcome Center. The tranquil ambience of the room exudes a serene feeling that speaks of peace and family. "The new Welcome Center is a great place

for us to meet our visitors and prospective families,” says Foster. “It is one of the first impressions they have of Central Catholic, and we've received so many compliments on this room." This is a place to carefully plan important events, calmly discuss crucial matters pertaining to the school, and--most importantly--welcome future generations of students into the Central Catholic family.

Almost all of the families and faculty at Central know that the new Student Center and Welcome Center are comfortable and well-decorated spaces, but perhaps they do not know the story that preceded the renovations or about the poignant story of love and loss that took place 11 years ago in the heart of the person responsible for their creation, Jan Egbers.

When Jan said goodbye to her husband Gary Egbers the evening of Sunday, July 17, 2004, she had no idea that her life was about to change forever. It wasn’t until Monday morning that Jan found out her husband’s plane had crashed in the dense fog of Wheeling, West Virginia, late Sunday night. While some of Gary and Jan’s children had already grown up and had families of their own, Jan still had young twins, Thomas and Harry Egbers, who were about to enter kindergarten at Holy Trinity (now Corpus Christi) Catholic School that fall.

“When you have a father and husband leave the door and never come back, you have this physiological shock,” remembers Jan. “There was no feeling in my hands or in my legs...I couldn’t feel anything.” Her Presbyterian pastor at the time, Reverend Ted Pierce, told her to hold on, because a storm in her life was certainly coming. With two five-year-old boys still at home, Jan had little time to process the immense tragedy. “I had no choice. I had to walk the boys into school every morning. That was the storm. The shock wore off after about three months, and then the reality set in: this was a new life, and it was never going to change. These kids were never going to grow up with their dad.”

In the midst of such tremendous grief, Jan and her young boys found unexpected support in the Catholic school system. There was a program at Holy Trinity called Rainbows for All God’s Children, a support group for children experiencing the hardships of life with deceased or divorced parents, and it was there that Jan and her family began to find a new home in the Catholic community of Bloomington-Normal. Jan and her boys connected with two other families who had recently lost fathers, and a supportive friendship began among the three of them. “Those ladies were a gift,” says Jan about the other recent widows she grew close to that fall.

When Harry and Tom prepared to make their First Communion two years later in second grade, Jan acted upon a previously growing desire to learn more about the Catholic faith. She entered the RCIA process and entered the Catholic Church that very Easter. “I thought the Catholic faith was amazing and wanted to learn more.” It was through this relationship with God inside the Catholic community that Jan felt her strength to continue on such a challenging journey as a widowed mother. “The faith. I don’t know how people do it without the faith. I was lost, and I was weak. Those poor kids (Tom and Harry) could have such worse troubles. The school family, the church family. I don’t know what we would have done without them.”

Years later, Jan is left with a deep sense of gratitude for the healing and supportive home her family found in the Catholic school community of Bloomington-Normal so many years ago. She believes, “This gift of faith my family received can never be taken away. You have to share that gift with others. It was shared with and came upon us--that was healing for

us.” With her twin boys about to graduate as seniors from Central Catholic High School, Jan is still trying to accept the shocking reality that she will no longer have any children in the K-12 Catholic schools after this year. “I see the teachers and school as a gift, and I want our family to be able to give back.”

It was this desire to give back that helped Jan conceive the notion to renovate the Student Center and Welcome Center back in 2014 when Tom and Harry were still freshmen. Jan was serving on the Central Catholic Advisory Committee when she realized that there were no optimal rooms in the school for prospective families. “We needed a good landing spot,” she remembers thinking. “We needed a comfortable place where new families could be welcomed.”

Jan also noticed that the students did not have a very comfortable place to relax or study. She would see students lying on lunch tables in the Commons after school, and it was not a very impressive sight for adults who were visiting the building. “I felt the need to make Central physically a

warmer and more inviting atmosphere.” This prompted her to propose the renovation of a new Welcome Center for prospective families and a new Student Center for students to utilize. Once designs were sketched and planned, Jan generously donated the funds necessary in order to complete the two projects.

Construction on the Student Center began in the summer of 2015 and was completed several months later in early fall. The room features new carpet, pleasantly contrasting blue and beige wall colors, and cherry wood trim along the bottom of the inside floor perimeter. Comfortable couches, coffee tables, high-top tables with stools, and numerous work desks allow for students to engage in a variety of relaxing or academic tasks. Freshman Liam Brady appreciates this. “You can work in separate groups but have an entire class in there at the same time. Everyone can be in there at once, and there are so many places for people to go to.”

Sophomore Mackenna Duncan believes that the Student Center helps reinforce

a sense of community in the school. “It encourages interaction between students of different grade levels,” she observes. “At lunch, students sit with their own grade or with their own friends, but in the Student Center, their group of friends might not all be there, so they are more likely to hang out with new people.”

Technological upgrades include two flat-screen televisions for presentations and a computer station with printers for students who need to physically publish academic assignments. “It’s easier to get stuff done in there,” says freshman Mason Nafziger. “The printers allow you to get something printed if you forgot to do so the night before at home.” Cherry wood bookshelves hold a number of literary fiction and nonfiction books for students to use. A beautiful crucifix and large prints of St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Dominic, and St. Benedict on the wall offer students visible reminders that Jesus and His saints are always present for divine assistance.

The Welcome Center features complimentary decor to the Student Center and is furnished with a couch, and two armchairs set on either side of a coffee table. A large cherry wood conference table allows for important collaborative meetings to be held. The decor of the Welcome Center is meant to reflect the familiar love and warmth that Central already hopes to embody. “I feel the Holy Spirit in here now,” explains Jan as she comfortably sits on the couch. “The room makes me feel good, because it symbolizes us sharing our faith. It’s just peaceful here.” The vision for future improvement plans to the Welcome Center will maintain the serene space but capture Central Catholic’s pictorial history of the predecessor school buildings.

Jan sees her financial contribution as a means of supporting the greater spiritual reality of the school. “It’s more than just

writing a check,” she says. “That faith-based education--the students may not be paying attention at the time, but they are going to need it in life. You cannot put a price on that type of educational experience. I believe that faith-based education is the best thing for my family and for all children, and that’s why we are at Central Catholic.” She strongly believes that everyone in the community needs to help keep the school community strong and vibrant.

Principal Sean Foster agrees, and he has always been impressed with the dedication and involvement from parents and alumni. “We are blessed to have so many generous people in our community who support Central Catholic. The time, resources, and advice they provide allow us to be faithful to our mission as a Catholic school.”

Jan’s example has not been lost on her own children. “We have to always be willing to help others,” comments senior Harry Egbers. Fellow twin Tom Egbers adds to that: “It’s important to give back and remember where you came from. I think it’s cool that those rooms are going to be there for a long time for students to enjoy.”

Jan is proud of her boys and other members of the Egbers’ family who are so supportive of Central Catholic and understand the value of sharing their gifts with the school. Her suggestion to others in the Saints family is, “Take the time to reflect on your experiences here, and try and put a value on it. Put value on the experience you had here now that you have graduated from Central Catholic. How often do you sit down in a chair and think, ‘Wow! Where would I have been without that?’ It’s important for others to help, and I can only hope that with my journey, others will find strength. I would love to share my strength with others so they can also share their gifts with other families at Central Catholic.”

In the spirit of learning, here’s a little True/False quiz for the Central Catholic family. Don’t worry, your GPA is safe!

1) We offered nearly $300,000 in financial assistance to families in need for the 2016-17 school year.

TRUE! We want to work with families who want to be a part of Central Catholic High School and it is through the generosity of our donors that dreams become reality!

2) Over the past five years, our graduates have averaged more than $1 million per year in scholarships and tuition assistance for their college of choice.

FALSE. Double that number to make it more than $2 million per year, an average of nearly $25,000 per student. We are especially proud because this shows families and donors a direct return on tuition investment.

3) Nearly 99% of Central Catholic graduates go on to attend college.

TRUE. Over the past five years nearly all of our graduates pursued a higher degree or joined the military.

4) The 5-year average ACT score for a Central Catholic student is 24.5 compared to a 21.5 reported local average and a 20.8 reported state average.

TRUE. We are incredibly proud of our students’ willingness to learn and excel.

5) Every one of our 2015-16 sports teams earned the Illinois High School Association Team Academic Achievement Award for a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

TRUE!!! We are so proud of the students who represent us in the classroom and on the field of play. By the way, the highest team GPA was a 3.94 posted by our Girls’ Tennis team!

6) In 2015 The Washington Post ranked Central Catholic as the most challenging school in the area and in the Top 10% in the country.

FALSE. Somewhat of a trick question as we were actually ranked in the Top 7% nationally!

7) Our students offer over 5,000 hours of service to our community every year through the Living the Faith program.

FALSE. That only represents about half of the hours performed. Over

10,000 hours were provided, AND many of our students find such joy in volunteering it becomes a central part of their life.

8) Our student to counselor ratio is on par with other high schools in our area.

FALSE. Our ratio is by far the best in the area. It’s roughly 160 to 1 and no other school is less than 350 to 1. This gives our counselors every opportunity to work with students to ensure their success at Central Catholic and beyond.

9) Our athletic programs have won eight team and nine individual State Championships.

FALSE. We added a tenth individual State Championship in Girls’ Tennis this Fall!

10) Our students donate over $10,000 annually to a charity every year.

TRUE. Each year our senior class selects a charity that the school will support with various fundraisers. At our Commencement Assembly, a check totaling over $10,000 is presented to representatives of the charity. This year’s senior charity is Special Olympics Illinois.

Here’s hoping you aced this test, but the real purpose is for you to share this information with anyone deciding where their child will attend high school. Central Catholic High School is the best choice for a quality education and the only choice that prepares a student for college AND for Heaven. As you encounter these families, please let us know and direct these families to Scott Vogel, Director of Admissions and Marketing, office: (309) 661-7000, ext. 304, mobile: (309) 533-2200, or e-mail: [email protected].

The Central Catholic Girls’ Tennis program has started a new winning trend capturing a singles state title and placing third as a team in the 2016 State Tournament. It is no coincidence that the girls responsible for bringing hardware back to the school are friends both on and off the court.

In October, Madison Tattini (’18) entered the IHSA 1A State Tournament as the number one seeded singles player after having to face teammate Clare Wieland (’18) in the Sectional Final. Fortunately, before that match even played out with Tattini winning, both young ladies had already qualified for trips to the State competition. Tattini and Wieland were joined at State by the Central Catholic girl’s doubles team of Maggie Stopa (’18) and Charlie Sartoris (’19).

Stopa, Tattini, and Wieland each made a 2015 State appearance as well, but their expectations were higher than their previous visit. 2016 was the first year the IHSA had two divisions for tennis and the Saints were expected to make some noise. The three returnees felt it was a little easier going back, but Wieland added, “It’s still intimidating at State.”

In true teamwork fashion, most of their regular season teammates made the road trip to the Chicago suburbs to watch their fellow Saints compete and that support had quite an impact. “We bonded together,” said Wieland. “The team pushed each other to the limit and achieved an all-time high.” The team’s success at State started with Tattini who met the pressure of a top seed head-on and brought home Central Catholic’s first ever State Championship in Tennis.

Weiland and doubles team Stopa/Sartoris played deep into the tournament and combined to win the Saints a Third Place team trophy.

Even with all the success that these four young ladies achieved, it is discussion of their entire team that make them light up the most. Sartoris credited her teammates for her improvement from her freshman to sophomore year as “the team pushed me to be better.” Tattini added, “Experiencing everything with the team; playing each other in practice makes everyone better.”

Tattini’s singles championship and the team’s finish looks like it may be just the beginning. Stopa drives home that point about how the team responds to winning. “Seeing each other’s success makes everyone want to succeed more as well.” Thank you to Coach Joe Rondone and the entire Central Catholic High School Saints Girls Tennis squad for showcasing excellent teamwork, and congratulations on your success.

When asked about his favorite assignment over his 50-year career as an active priest in the Catholic Church, Fr. Doug Hennessy replies humbly, "I'm not saying which is my favorite because they all provided different gifts.” It’s not a surprising answer from the Class of 1956 alum who recalls his days at Trinity High School just as subtly but extremely fondly. He’s not one to go on about being a two-sport athlete, the yearbook sports’ editor, or valedictorian of his class. He even somewhat reluctantly shares an overview of his pastoral assignments, as to not let them overshadow the importance he places in Christ’s teachings and service to others.

Even before attending high school, Fr. Doug recounts the summer of 1950 as a memorable one but not necessarily life-changing In between sessions of playing summer ball with other Catholic kids from around town, Fr. Doug’s family started attending daily Mass. Following the graduation of his eldest sister Marilyn (‘50) from Trinity, she and middle-sister Eileen (‘52) both went on a Catholic group tour of Europe with a priest. “Maybe my dad just had more faith in God than in airplanes,” he jokes. “My parents started going to daily Mass over that 4-6 weeks, and for me, daily Mass became a part of life. From then on, it’s just what I’ve done.”

Students at Trinity Grade School in the 40’s and 50’s had all their classes

taught by religious sisters, and nearly all Trinity High School

students had the same. As fourth graders, students learned Latin response to the Mass, and by the end of the school

year, boys were able to become altar servers. Fr. Doug, like many other boys, continued to altar serve in high school, opting to take more formal Latin classes as part of his education. “I admired the clergy in both schools. We got a very good education with the sisters.” The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters from Wisconsin taught almost all of the classes including the girls’ religious education in high school, but it was the priests who taught the boys their religion classes for 3 of the 4 high school years. “Faith was part of the life at Trinity. You didn’t have to be intentional about it. You just did it and lived it, and you never gave it a second thought. You really got to explore the faith.”

Fr. Doug shares that there was not necessarily a single moment in his youth that became a calling to join the priesthood as a young man. “The possibility of a vocation was talked about while I was a student, probably more back then than what it is now, but that’s also because clergy was there in the school. I’m sure that had an impact, but there was also this atmosphere of faith that was just there. It was not self-conscious. We were just disciples, and as disciples, the Catholic faith is what you lived.”

In 2004, Fr. Doug received an unexpected assignment from the bishop to return to his home parish as pastor of Holy Trinity in Bloomington, where he would eventually retire. His old high school building across the street came down that summer as the new Central Catholic school building was opened for the 2003-2004 school year.

But the former Saints’ basketball and baseball player still has very strong feelings for Christ-centered education. “I feel like today Central Catholic continues to be a very good education of faith, and faith is definitely pervasive in the school. Now, more than ever, that atmosphere of faith is crucial. Nothing is alien from our faith in God. The truth is something we want to pursue and search for. It’s a whole approach to living, and it’s a way to live--not just a set of

truths or something you just physically hand off."

Fr. Doug continues to pray for so many who have impacted his alma mater

and for those who continue to

do so. “Teachers, clergy, and coaches,

too. They have given so much. I’m thankful for their sacrifices. I want Central Catholic to be a school grounded in faith where students can live life fully and faithfully. The school that I once attended continues to offer wonderful opportunities for students to use all their gifts in ways that suit each individual and do so in a way that is permeated in faith. I think it’s important to keep in mind our school's motto of ‘Our difference is our strength.’ Our difference is a conviction that Christ is the light of the world. For alums, every generation needs to look back with gratitude and support in both prayer and finances so our school can continue to flourish.”

If you’ve ever wondered if your gift to the Fund for Central Catholic makes a difference in the lives of our students, spend a couple of minutes with Senior Maria Castiblanco. Maria shared her story with some generous benefactors at the recent Saints Leadership Society Reception, held on Thursday, October 20. Maria eloquently told the story of her educational journey that eventually led her to Central Catholic and the blessings she found here. Our donors enjoyed hearing Maria’s touching story and her future aspirations, along with an enthusiastic testimony about working at Central from Math teacher, Karen Kenney. Ms. Kenney praised not only the academic achievements of our students but also told of how our faculty influences student faith formation through daily prayer, bible studies and group retreats.

Over 50 invitations were sent to those donors who make up the Saints Leadership Society-- supporters who have donated $1000 or more (during a fiscal year) to The Fund for Central Catholic. As a thank you to those generous benefactors, our school administration and Advisory Committee welcomed Society members into the newly remodeled Student Center for appetizers and drinks. This was a chance to show our appreciation for their support during the 2015-16 school year and to show them how their donations have impacted our campus. With more than 35 in attendance, the reception provided a great opportunity to share how important each and every gift is, as 63% of the dollars raised for The Fund came from Society member donors.

With piano background music provided by Junior, Owen Talbott, Society members had the chance to meet and talk with other Central Catholic alumni and friends during the first-ever, hour-long reception. Advancement Director, Kevin Cook opened the evening by saying, “We could not do what we do at Central Catholic without the support of our donors. We want to thank you all and let you know that your support is deeply appreciated.” In closing, Principal Sean Foster echoed those thanks and shared the vision of how much opportunity we have to impact more students and families, like Maria's, because of the caliber of support from the Central Catholic family and faculty/staff like Ms. Kenny.

Saints Alive 27, Treasure Island, was held this past April at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Uptown Normal. Over 350 guests, dressed in “Caribbean Casual” attire, arrived to the sound of a steel drum band and were immediately transported to an island adventure. Dennis and Michelle Whalen chaired the annual event for the second year in a row and were assisted by a large committee of energetic volunteers. As always, the hotel worked hard to create a menu that fit the auction theme. Guests enjoyed a meal straight from the tropics—short ribs with Rum glaze, grilled Mahi-Mahi with mango relish, and pineapple upside down cake for dessert.

The auction portion of the evening began with a short video to promote the Fund-in-Need, Access Control—a state of the art keyless entry system for the school

building. Many generous friends raised their numbers in support of this effort and installation of the keyless entry should be completed during the Christmas Break.

Once again, auction guests enjoyed effortless mobile bidding on their smartphones for the Silent Auction. Bidding on those items remained open until after the Live Auction’s exciting conclusion, which featured a trip to a private villa in Mexico and a week in Door County.

Thank you to our generous sponsors, donors, and friends who supported Saints Alive 27 through the auction and Fund-A-Need efforts.

In celebration of his 53 years at Central Catholic High School, Saints alumni and friends held a Roast and Toast in honor of John “The Dean” Snyder on Saturday, September 3 at Bloomington Country Club. Over 100 guests were in attendance to share stories and raise a glass to commemorate Coach Snyder’s time as a Coach and Athletic Director at CCHS.

John’s teaching career began after serving in Korea in the United States Marine Corps and using the GI Bill to fund his college education at Illinois State University. Upon graduation, John thought he was headed to Amboy High School until he got a phone call from then Trinity High School Athletic Director, Bob Hughes. Bob offered John a teaching spot that came with the head basketball coaching position—a job he just couldn’t pass up.

For many years John coached several sports and in 1965 was head coach for football, basketball and baseball. John says that year about did him in…and then he continued on for another 30! In 1997, he retired as head basketball coach winning more than 500 games. He ended a 37 year career as athletic director in 2003 but continued to teach until May of 2010.

As our guests visited and reminisced during the cocktail hour, they also enjoyed a virtual history of John’s career with a video created

by our emcee for the evening, WJBC on-air personality, Dan Swaney. Dan was joined by fellow “roasters” John Szabo, John McIntyre, Blaize Bugajski, Bobby Moews, Tom Nelson, Don Newberg, and the Dean’s close childhood friend and coach, Jack Murphy.

There are so many great stories from John’s time at CCHS, many of which were shared that night. He remembers every athlete, every game and even every score. Every year John and his wife Sandy spend some winter days in Destin, Florida. This means they miss a lot of Saints Basketball. Thus, a favorite tale John tells is the story of desperately wanting to attend the 2014 State Championship basketball game but he ended up watching it on his computer from Florida, in his mind coaching right along with Coach Welch as the Saints took home that miraculous come-from-behind trophy.

To conclude the evening, State Representative Dan Brady, Senator Bill Brady, and former player Blaize Bugajski joined John on stage to present him with a special commendation from the State of Illinois to commemorate his years at CCHS. What a special night to celebrate and thank Coach John Snyder for his dedication to the students and athletes of Trinity and Central Catholic High Schools. Here’s to you, Dean!

We are seeking alumni to help us connect with each class. You can help by calling Kim Fox in the Advancement Office at 309-661-7000 or [email protected], and assist with having your classmates register on our alumni website. It is an exciting time for our school as we strive to build our Alumni Association. We would love for you to be a part of it!

Fox Creek Village was the setting for a gathering of long-time friends and classmates, this past June. Trinity High School Class of 1956 got together for a night of fellowship and memories as they celebrated their 60 year reunion. The weekend began with a tour of the “new” Central Catholic High School. Class members who had not entered the halls of our current CCHS facilities got a tour of the school and grounds and enjoyed looking at the historical photos displayed outside of the auditorium. The 24 friends then gathered at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and attended Mass celebrated by classmate, Monsignor Doug Hennessy. A catered dinner followed in the clubhouse at Fox Creek Village and classmates enjoyed catching up well into the evening. CCHS alums Marty (’69) and Lisa (’82) Haas served as bartenders for the group, while enjoying listening to stories of high school in the ‘50’s. Sunday morning found several of the Class of 1956 at hometown restaurant, CJ’s, for coffee and breakfast before returning home to places as far away as Arizona and Florida.

The Class of 1981 held their reunion on the weekend of September 30, celebrating their 35th year as CCHS graduates. Beginning with a tailgate party in the North parking lot alongside the Class of ‘96, these friends had a great turnout, many sporting the traditional Homecoming mum ordered in advance from Niepagen Florist. The weather forced many to leave early but a post-game party was pre-arranged at the Knights of Columbus with a cash bar. At 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 1 a memorial Mass honored the five members of the Class of ‘81 who have passed away. A tour of the school followed with pictures of the class taken in the new Student Center. Fun times and food followed at Gill Street Sports Bar and Cheeks Bar & Grill in the Towanda Plaza.

On September 30, the Class of 1996 met at Bill Hundman Memorial Stadium to kick off their 20 year reunion weekend. A group of classmates gathered in the parking lot with their families and friends to tailgate before the Saints took on IVC. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate but many made their way over to Gill Street Sports Bar to get out of the rain. The following evening, the class met at Baxter’s American Grille and enjoyed live music by Dan Hubbard. 20 alumni and their spouses enjoyed a fun evening, sharing plenty of photos and stories from high school. Some truly hadn’t seen each other in 20 years, and said it was so fun to reconnect and reminisce about their days at CCHS!

If you are planning a reunion, please contact the Alumni Director, Kim Fox, for a Reunion Planning Guide, class list and Save the Date postcards. A great way to connect with your class is by registering on our Alumni Website, at alumni.blmcchs.org.

Home for the Holidays was the 2016 Homecoming theme and, as each class chose a different holiday, Central Catholic enjoyed a festive week celebrating Christmas, Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve and Halloween.

The week was a busy one with homeroom games, sporting events and evening activities, leading up to the Senior Breakfast on Friday morning. At the all-school assembly, Central Catholic welcomed Loyola Basketball Coach Porter Moser as guest speaker where he gave an inspiring speech to a packed auditorium of parents and students. The weather was beautiful as the Saints football team took the field to a packed home grandstand, and for the first time, the pep band joined the students by sitting and playing in the student section.

First year Band Director Melissa Kandel, who joins 10-year veteran April Myers in the Music Department, is hoping to eventually start a marching band. The school took the first steps in that direction by purchasing new percussion instruments using contributions from The Fund for Central Catholic. With the new instruments, the band was able to head

student body voted Meg Deneen, daughter of Dave (‘78) and Katie Vertin (‘89) Deneen as Queen. Barrett Lee, son of Dr. Bob and Xandra Lee, was crowned King. The football game ended in a 14-6 Saints victory over Mahomet-Seymour, allowing Central Catholic to clinch the final Corn Belt Conference Championship title. Homecoming came to a close Saturday night as students dressed to impress at the dance. Many of those attending said it was the most enjoyable Homecoming dance they had been to with a good time had by all! Many thanks to all those who helped make this year’s Homecoming so fun, particularly to Mr. Tony Fabrizio who coordinated the school-wide class competition and events.

outside Bill Hundman Memorial Field prior to kickoff to the tailgate area, joining the cheerleaders to spur on school spirit by playing the school song along with other pep music.

At halftime the crowd was treated to an enthusiastic dance routine performed by the cheerleaders, after which the Central Catholic Alumni Association honored a group of well-deserving Saints Alumni, supporters, and faculty/staff through their annual recognition awards . This year, the Distinguished Alumni award was presented to Judge Kevin Fitzgerald (‘74) who was joined on the field by his family and brand new grandchild. The Saints Service Award went to John Kuntz (‘80) and Laura Lockenvitz (‘83) Miller for their many hours of volunteerism. The John Snyder Faculty and Staff Award was presented to staff members, Jim Reckard, Head of Art Department, and Technology Coordinator Jim Henehan.

Halftime concluded with the entire Homecoming Court taking the field to crown Central Catholic’s Homecoming royalty. The

Jim Taber’s Conversion Journey and Path to CentralIn the early 1980s, while Taber was working on his PhD, he faced a significant surgical procedure. Before the operation took place, he wanted to ask Carrie, now his wife, to marry him. Carrie was a Christian, but Taber was an atheist. “Since truth doesn’t matter to an atheist, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to send up a request if there was no God anyway.” So he got on his knees and said the sinner’s prayer, promising he would drop out of the PhD program and give his life to Christ if he made it through the surgery. After his recovery, he did both and married Carrie. With a struggling career path, Taber settled for a number of jobs, some in education and some otherwise, just to support his young family. Taber believes God placed him in so many different positions for the sole purpose of helping others, as he assisted several co-workers in finding better opportunities, while looking for better himself.

While Mr. Taber was working one of his odd jobs at Illinois State, a Christian leader told him he would get a phone call with a new job offer. Shortly after, and believing it to be divine intervention yet again, Taber received that call from Al Markezich, a former co-worker from ISU, about an opportunity at Central Catholic. Al was a biology teacher at Central and had already recommended Taber as the man for the job to the principal, Sr. Mary Kremer. Taber, who holds a Masters of Science in Biology, however, didn’t even apply for the job because the biology position was not available. Sr. Kremer begged him to come in for an interview because no one had even applied for the job to teach algebra, chemistry, and physics. He turned her down repeatedly but eventually agreed to an interview just so Sr. Kremer could tell the Bishop someone had interviewed but had not accepted the position. By the time the interview was over, Taber had accepted the position, because “I couldn’t tell Sr. Kremer, ‘No.’”

So began a 33-year teaching career at Central Catholic. Taber was not only teaching algebra, chemistry, and physics in the fall of 1984, but he was also learning the subjects along the way. Taber shares, “Those first couple of years made me a better teacher because I learned to incorporate those subjects into my biology classes in future years.” Initially Taber only planned to stay one or two years at the school, but he fell in love with teaching the

"For almost half his life, Mr. Jim Taber has paced the floors of Central Catholic High School, sharing his passion for and knowledge of science, faith, chess, and life with everyone he encounters. In recognition of his commitment to the school, the Steve and Mary Keogh family founded the James Taber Endowment Fund for Science Education at Central Catholic High School in 2015.

students. Sometime after his second year, both he and his wife realized they loved the Catholic faith. They converted to Catholicism, and with Fr. John King’s assistance, their children were able to attend Epiphany School, which meant Taber could afford to stay at Central Catholic. The impact of his walk led two of his daughters to become theology teachers; Emily Taber (‘06) teaches in Omaha, NE, and Kathy Taber McEldowney (‘01) joins her dad here at Central.

Influence on StudentsIn addition to being a proud father of five Central grads, Taber has many success stories of former students. One of those who followed him in the field of science is Scott Keogh (‘87), the son of previously noted Steve & Mary Keogh. Scott, a professor and head of the Department of Evolution Ecology & Genetics at Australian National University, is considered a world-renowned scientist, an expert in amphibians and reptiles, and an author of over 150 publications. He recalls Taber’s class as fun and “exceedingly interesting,” and he also remembers Taber’s “amazing dedication” to students. Scott didn’t realize it until years later, but the topics covered in high school biology were university-level material. He believes Mr. Taber’s instruction was a solid foundation for students who studied science later on in college. Scott further notes, “Jim Taber had a very lasting impact on me both as a

teacher and as a scientist. His infectious enthusiasm for all aspects of biology, and how it is taught, inspired me to pursue my own career in science, and science teaching, at the university level.”

Scott’s classmate Mike Heinz (‘87) also pursued a career in the sciences due to Taber’s impact. Mike is currently the Science Department Chair at Downers Grove North High School. Mike, who also serves as director of Northern Illinois Science Educators, recalls several memories from Taber’s class that really stuck with him. As a senior taking Advanced Biology with Taber, Mike was allowed to present a diffusion and osmosis demonstration to a younger class. This experience, along with field trips to the ISU cadaver lab and to Fermilab in Batavia translated to Mike’s

Jim Taber

own teaching and mentoring of other educators. He feels giving students opportunities to experience science in real-world settings is key to helping them develop a passion for the sciences. He recalls Taber’s enthusiasm for science and his ability to integrate religion with science. Mike reminisces about Taber sharing his faith and telling students his atheist background. Taber challenged students to back up their beliefs with reasoning and evidence to defend their beliefs when necessary. Even though Mike teaches in a public school, he finds ways to incorporate faith into his classes.

Mike shared a Taber quote that reflects his emphasis on faith: “Never forget that you all have the ability to earn a PhD in life.” Mike admits he was just trying to get

through class, but over time, “a message like that really resonates.” Taber himself reminisces about former students like Scott Keogh and Mike Heinz who have gone on to great careers in science, and he is proud they have been so successful in their fields. His philosophy is simple: “You never know who you’ll have an influence on. You gotta love them all!”

The Endowment: A Lasting ImpactThe James Taber Endowment Fund came about as Steve Keogh served as executor of his aunt and uncle’s estate. Established in memory of lifelong Bloomington residents and lovers of Catholic education, Ignatius “Nace” and Frances Keogh, the $100,000 endowment honors Mr. Taber “for his

1 7

lifelong commitment to outstanding science teaching and the development of future scientists and teachers.” The Taber Endowment provides equipment for the science department and further education for the science faculty.

Former students Scott Keogh & Mike Heinz were truly inspired by the way Taber taught and how he mentored them as young men. While Scott and the Keogh family provided the initial donation, Mike Heinz serves as the spokesman and a consultant for the endowment. Scott Keogh hopes this endowment will “help continue Jim Taber’s legacy of inspiring students to achieve in the sciences.” Heinz believes the endowment is a concrete example of our Catholic faith in action: “The Keogh family fund is an example of a way we can all get involved. As part of our faith, we can reach out to others and give back. We can translate our successes into success for others.”

If you are interested in donating to the James Taber Endowment Fund for Science Education or even starting a fund of your own, contact Kevin Cook, Director of Advancement at 309-661-7000, ext. 303 or [email protected].

How many of you have heard comments about how our

young people have it so easy or don’t need to work for

anything or aren’t motivated or, worse yet, are self-

centered? If you’ve heard or said anything like this, let me introduce

you to Thomas Bernhardt, Joey Gruenwald, Zoe Myers, Annie

Rondone and Emma Schopp. Five Central Catholic Alumni who are

shining examples of young people who work hard, are tremendously

motivated, and who put God and others first in their lives.

FOCUS stands for Fellowship Of Catholic University Students. These young men and women join FOCUS to serve as missionaries assigned to colleges and universities across the country to “encounter students in friendship where they are, inviting them into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and accompanying them as they pursue lives of virtue and excellence.” Simply put, these Central Catholic Alumni are actively bringing young people to the Catholic faith and each of them had different high school experiences that ultimately helped to lead them to this role.

All five of these Central Catholic Alumni arrived at similar destinations through different paths. In some instances, God placed them on a fairly direct path, while for others the paths were filled with life-experiences that made the path a bit less direct but made the travelers stronger in their FOCUS roles. They share a common bond in Central Catholic High School and many times, when those paths became muddled, it was the friendships they established and the lessons learned at Central Catholic that helped to straighten their paths and keep them pointed in the right direction.

Joey Gruenwald is a FOCUS Team Director at George Mason University. He took this director position on after completing a previous missionary assignment at the University of Virginia. His first touch with FOCUS was immediate and impactful. He was met on his first day of college at Benedictine College (Kansas) by “someone who wanted to get to know me.” He was invited to play dodge ball that first night and many on his dodge ball team formed a Bible Study. By his second semester, Joey

Thomas Bernhardt 2012

Thomas Bernhardt felt that Central Catholic prepared him well to be involved in his faith. He learned that, as a high school student and in life, you need to “find a community to keep you going and accountable.” He joined a Bible Study group that he would eventually lead and began to get other men involved in the group. This helped him to continue to move forward in his Faith.

During his junior year in college, he went on a FOCUS mission trip to Ireland. Without classes, he found himself living his life to the fullest as a missionary. After that trip he knew that he wanted to be

a missionary; however, there was still the matter of his college major (aerospace engineering) and a career.

While talking with one of his engineering professors, Thomas was asked, “Do you love aerospace engineering?” This should have been an easy answer for someone who had been studying the subject throughout college. It was; only the answer was “no.” What he did love was his Catholic faith, he loved Jesus, and he was ready to share that love with others.

Thomas is early in his FOCUS mission at the University of Virginia. His immediate goal is to “introduce people to the person of Jesus Christ.” His FOCUS training has taught him how to work with students to follow the example Christ set for us. The foundation for the confidence and willingness to put himself out there was established at Central Catholic High School where he was encouraged to enter into a personal relationship with Jesus and to always find time for prayer.

was leading the Bible Study group. In this experience, he felt that he had been given so much through prayer and support that he wanted to give back.

Joey has many stories to share about his time as both a missionary and a Team Director, however one story in particular sticks out. He met a student at George Mason who admittedly “hated” FOCUS and wanted no part of it. Joey saw something more and intentionally prayed for this student to see what Joey

Emma Schopp 2010

saw in him. Eventually the student’s heart softened so much that he, himself, applied to become a FOCUS missionary, and he remains one of Joey’s closest personal friends.

As a freshman at Central Catholic, Joey described himself as awkward. Many of his close friends did not follow him to our school and he was ready to leave after his first semester. His parents, however, were not ready for him to leave and strongly encouraged him to stay at Central

Catholic. He continues to thank them for the support because eventually Joey underwent a “fantastic faith formation” in high school. Joey was part of the school’s first Classic Christian Literature Course where every class period included a visit to the chapel as part of the curriculum, helping him to form a commitment to daily prayer. As a FOCUS Team Member, he is to introduce people to the Catholic faith and “because of Central Catholic, I know how to create a good Catholic.”

God’s plan for Emma Schopp began in her formation at Central Catholic where the education and sense of family really stood out. “I’m still friends with some of the teachers there. They impacted my life so much and instilled a true love of Christ in my heart.” Her path, however, like many others was not direct.

After graduating from Central Catholic, Emma attended Benedictine College (Kansas). “I spent my entire junior year playing a game of tug-o-war with my plans for my life and God’s (plans). When I decided during junior year, that my plans

Page 22: c e n t r a l EXPERIENCE · Michael Novario Epiphany Director of Pharmacy, OSF St. Joseph Michael O'Donnell St. Mary's Bloomington Consultant and Advocate for Health and Aging Lisa

After graduating from Central Catholic Zoe Myers left for St. Louis University and spent the first two years falling away from her faith. There was something missing in her life and she began to rediscover it while sitting in her car, crying on the phone with former Central Catholic classmate, Joey Gruenwald. After that conversation, Zoe explored FOCUS and began the journey back to her faith.

Annie Rondone was influenced by teachers at Central Catholic who were involved in FOCUS when they were in school. She attended the University of Illinois, joined a bible study and found herself drawn to what she termed “true Christian joy.” She joined a sorority as an undergrad and decided she would like to become a FOCUS missionary to specifically work with Greek women on a college campus. After graduating in three years from Illinois, the only job she applied for was as a FOCUS Missionary.

were better than God’s plans, my prayer life became almost non-existent leading me to a lifestyle that left me empty and broken.” It’s here that FOCUS became more than just an acronym for Emma; a meeting with a FOCUS missionary on campus provided Emma the inspiration and virtuous friend she needed and her focus became God’s plan.

Emma Schopp is currently serving as FOCUS Team Director at the University of California at Irvine. She shares, “The most rewarding part of FOCUS is encountering souls, because students have welcomed us into their lives and let us be a part of their journey no matter where they are in that journey. I’ve made some of the best friends in my whole life, in the past couple of years. It’s really beautiful and it brings you closer to Jesus.”

Emma Schopp, continued... She was accepted and assigned to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. When asked about her most rewarding time as a missionary, she mentioned one of the techniques that FOCUS uses is called barehanding. It is a form of evangelization where you approach people with nothing in your hands and start talking to students about their faith. While doing this she met a student who asked, “How do I get confirmed?” Annie talked to her about Confirmation and invited her to join a Bible Study. The student came to every Bible Study and was confirmed that April during Easter Mass. “You’re always on mission. You won’t know your impact until you get to heaven.”

After serving one year at Ball State, Annie completed her two-year commitment as a Team Director at Troy University in Alabama – a campus with less than 300 Catholic students. She attributes her success in the FOCUS program to her time at Central Catholic. “I would not have been as prepared or open to meeting Christ personally had it not been for my time at Central Catholic.”

Annie Rondone 2011

Zoe Myers 2010

She applied and became a missionary in her senior year. This led to the first Bible Study she attended which was also the first Bible Study she ever led. She describes her experience as the hardest thing in life she has done so far, but also the most important. “It’s humbling to recognize that you don’t know what’s going on. I am so small and the Lord still works through me!” FOCUS taught Zoe, “We are made for a relationship and that void will be filled by something; fill that void with Jesus, with God.” She thoroughly enjoys walking with students who want to make Jesus the center of their lives.

Even though she stepped away from her faith after high school, Zoe admits

“when that fire and zeal to know God came, I already knew him from Central Catholic.” She remembers her former Central Catholic Chaplain Fr. Henehan telling her that self-knowledge is the first step to holiness. It was in high school that Zoe says she learned how to truly make friends with others, and ten to fifteen of her classmates remain close friends to this day. Perhaps the most important lesson she learned from Central Catholic is how to love and encourage the students she now encounters through FOCUS on the campus of University of Memphis, through similar Christ-centered friendships, no matter how difficult it might be to reach some of them.

The Good Neighbor Grant Program encourages State Farm Associates to build relationships with non-profit organizations that enhance the quality of life in State Farm communities in the United States. Associates who volunteer a minimum of 40 hours in a calendar year at the same nonprofit organization are eligible to apply for a Good Neighbor Grant for that organization.

We are fortunate to live in a State Farm community and have had several employees—alumni, parents and past parents—who have volunteered at CCHS for 40 hours, and, in turn, State Farm has given Central Catholic High School a $500 grant for each one. If you are employed by State Farm locally, we hope you can participate, too. Volunteer service of any type, including board service, committee work, fundraising activities, volunteer coaching, etc. is eligible as long as it is on a volunteer’s own time. We are most grateful to the following 2015-2016 State Farm Good Neighbor Grant participants:

Your employer recently extended to all its employees a Matching Gift program effective July 1, 2015, on top of the Good Neighbor Grant program.  This means that State Farm will match dollar-for-dollar an employee’s charitable financial contribution to Central Catholic High School, up to $1,500 in a calendar year, even through payroll deduction.  If you have made a contribution to Central Catholic already this year through The Fund for Central Catholic, please double your dollars by applying to have them matched by State Farm, and certainly do so in 2017. Thank you!

An unprecedented number of graduates from the Class of 2016 were Legacy students--those students whose grandparents or parents also graduated from Central Catholic High School. Thirteen members of the class held this distinction and we were pleased that six of our legacy parents chose to walk at the ceremony as Honor Graduates. A planned gift is a wonderful way to show your enduring support for Central Catholic High School. If you have not considered a plan to become a donor to the Saints Foundation, won’t you please do so today? A carefully planned gift can impact the lives of Central Catholic students and ensure the good work of this special place for years to come.

Planned giving is the process of making a meaningful charitable gift during a donor’s lifetime or at death by using smart legal and tax strategies. Planned giving is an integral part of a financial and estate plan. It serves the dual purposes of helping to support worthy causes like Central Catholic High School, while at the same time allowing individuals and families to make more substantial gifts by addressing their specific tax and financial concerns.

PLANNED GIVING:

Extending your Spirit of Generosity and Hope

by Tom Herr, Parent of Alumni & Current Parent

The key aspects of planned giving are deciding what to give, when to give, and ways to give that achieve your personal, financial, tax, and charitable goals. Planning a gift is easier than you think. It is part of your legacy and will extend your spirit of generosity for years to come.

Some planned gifts, such as charitable remainder trusts, provide a life-long income stream to the benefactor, spouse or other family members, with the remainder interest being paid in the future to Central Catholic. Others use estate and tax planning techniques in a will, trust or beneficiary designation to maximize the gift to charity and other heirs, while also helping minimize income, capital gains and estate taxes. Appropriate assets to contribute include cash, appreciated securities/stock, farmland, personal residence, commercial real estate, artwork, personal property, life insurance, and retirement plan assets.

All charitable gifts to Central Catholic High School have an impact. Anyone, regardless of income level, can make a tremendous investment in the future of Central Catholic. Annual gifts from discretionary income, such as donations to the Fund for Central Catholic, tuition assistance, or supporting our annual Saints Alive gala and auction, are critical to our short term fiscal health. Planned giving helps to ensure the long term welfare of our school and our mission.

It is important to seek professional advice to ensure any plan is most beneficial to you and for the school. If you have additional questions please contact Kevin Cook at 309.661.7000, ext. 303, or email [email protected].

“For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, declares the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for your woe, so as to give you a future of hope.”
