"He calls them to lead your holy people in love, nourish them by your word and strengthen them through the sacraments. Father, they are to give their lives in your service and for the salvation of your people as they strive
to grow in the likeness of Christ and honor you by their courageous witness of faith and love." From Chrism Mass

STEWARDSHIP
“But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.’” Luke 19:8
We are all called to graciously give back to the Lord in proportion to the blessings we have been given. This means everyone isn’t called to give the same amount, but is called to give equal sacrifice. No amount is too small or insignificant! Open your heart, how is God calling you?

OCEAN OF MERCY AND FAUSTINA MOVIES November 15, 7:00PM Youth Ctr.
Ocean of Mercy At the dawn of the 20th century, three voices rose up from Poland to proclaim an urgent message, a message powerful enough to alter the course of an age plunging into spiritual darkness. Filmed on location in more than 20 cities across Poland and the United States, this true story examines and chronicles the phenomenal lives and spiritual legacy of Saint Faustina Kowalksa, Saint Maximilian Kolbe, and Blessed John Paul II, modern day "Apostles of Mercy". Through never before seen film footage, rare photographs, and extensive interviews with friends, biographers, and family members, this story journeys across a dramatic visual landscape to document their heroic struggle and herald the message of Divine Mercy to all mankind.
Faustina An award-winning movie is a beautiful representation of the mystical life of St. Maria Faustina, who became the "Apostle of Divine Mercy". It tells the story of her mystical experiences as a nun living in a convent in Poland in the early 20th century. It is to her that Jesus appeared and commanded that she be his instrument for promoting devotion to his Divine Mercy, and that the Feast of Divine Mercy be established and celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. He also requested from Sister Faustina that an image be painted and venerated of him and his Divine Mercy, and asked that we pray especially the Chaplet of Mercy.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES / GENERAL INFORMATION
A CHRISTMAS CHOIR OF VOICES TO PROCLAIM CHRIST’S HOLY BIRTH
Just as in our personal life, a choir needs good balance. The Ascension Adult Choir is in great need of deep voices to balance out the beautiful treble voices of our choir at Christmas. In addition to leading our “Midnight Mass” on Christmas Eve (actually 10:00pm!), the choir will be joining with the Joyful Voices Youth Choir to present , “A Festival of Lessons and Carols” on the Fourth Sunday evening of Advent. Gentlemen of Ascension, please consider this call for participation as an opportunity to take the mystery of the Incarnation deep into your prayer life and express it through song. Not only will you be giving a gift to the Christ Child, but to our Music Ministry and parish family, as well. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the church. Learning our Christmas music is an ongoing process that accommodates those who have limited time and availability to be with us. Please call or email our Music Director, Dorothy Brandwein, at 913-681-3348 or [email protected] if you think there is even a small possibility you might be able to join the Adult Choir for Christmas. With God, “all things are possible.” Thank you!
PRAYER BEFORE AN ELECTION
Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community.
We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty.
We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender.
We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom.
We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles, and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

HAPPY PRIEST APPRECIATION
Pray! Invite! Encourage! Affirm! Vocations!
There are vocations... ... which manifest themselves. They must be fostered. ... which are not conscious of themselves. They must be awakened. ... which do not dare manifest themselves. They must be found and encouraged. ... which are in fear of being lost. They must be reassured. ... which meet with opposition. They must be strengthened. ... which are paralyzed by poverty. They must be helped financially.
Look around you.
How many men and women in your parishes are caring and compassionate individuals who are good listeners, articulate speakers, and loving enthusiastic Catholics?
How many of these special, gifted people have ever been invited to consider becoming a priest, sister, brother, permanent deacon, or full-time lay minister?
Statistics show that 80% of the 18-30 year olds in the United States and Canada have never been asked to consider a Church Vocation. Ask!!!
WE LOVE OUR PRIESTS! Pray for them and vocations!

SIGN UP NOW!!!
Come Down from the Tree, Zachaeus! Healing Our Divisions.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus invites Zachaeus to come down from the tree so that he might get to know Jesus better. Tomorrow, Pope Francis and Bishop Dr Munib A. Younan, President of the Lutheran World Federation, invite us to come down from the tree to get to know Jesus better through our brothers and sisters in Christ. On October 31, 2016 Pope Francis will be in Lund, Sweden to mark the beginning of a year of commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The event, jointly sponsored by the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and Roman Catholic Church will highlight the 50 years of continuous ecumenical dialogue between Catholics and Lutherans and the joint gifts of this collaboration. On October 13th, Pope Francis addressed a group of Lutheran pilgrims in Rome, saying: “What unites us is much more than what divides us! …While theologians carry on the dialogue in the doctrinal field, keep looking insistently for opportunities to encounter each other, to know each other better, to pray together and offer help to each other and to all those who are in need.” In keeping with this invitation of Pope Francis and the year of commemoration, our parish and Holy Cross Lutheran Church Overland Park, have committed themselves to coming together in fellowship, prayer and service so that we may get to know one another as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ and be enriched and grow together in faith. Parishioners from both churches are asked to pray for each other’s communities. A committee of parishioners from both churches has been meeting and is exploring ways our two communities can come together. Some ideas include: small group discussions for Lent, a joint prayer service in January during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and working together to serve those in need in our area. We also plan to host a “Theology on Tap” type of discussion where a panel of experts (our priests and pastors) can answer your questions about the Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches and how we can become “one Body in Christ”. We want to know what YOUR top questions are about the Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches. Please submit your questions by December 31st to [email protected]. Church of the Ascension 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30, 2016
Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Tough Love
The first reading tells us that the God of all the universe is a merciful God who loves all creatures, not just enough to keep them in existence, but enough to give sinners the chance to repent. At times when I am behind a slow driver and want to arm the photon torpedoes if he doesn't move over, I remember that only God, who made all things, has the right to punish our transgressions. Instead, God gives us warnings and reminders to lead us to repentance. Warnings are found in God's word, in the scriptures, and in Jesus. In the Hebrew scriptures, we see many warnings about sin and unfaithfulness. Besides the Ten Commandments, we also have the books of the law. While Christians no longer follow the laws of kosher, those laws can be warnings that even the smallest of sins need to be repented. White lies, for example, are usually told to keep from hurting someone's feelings. When we get used to telling white lies, however, we can be inclined to tell other lies, such as those told to protect ourselves. Those lies not only make it harder for people to trust us, they also keep us from facing our faults and taking responsibility for our actions. Jesus also warns us about sin, both in his teaching and when he forgives sinners. In John 8:1-11, he saves the woman caught in adultery from stoning but tells her to sin no more. In today's Gospel Jesus has dinner with the tax collector, who demonstrates his repentance by offering to repay those he has extorted. Jesus tells Zachaeus and the bystanders that he came to save the lost. But part of being saved is the intention not to get lost again. And what about "reminders"-- the results of sin that usually catch up with us? The sin of arrogance can lead a driver to think he can ignore the speed limit. But when he has to pay a speeding ticket, that is the reminder that his arrogance, not the speeding, was a sin. Most sins have consequences, ranging from a guilty conscience to a jail sentence or worse. If we ignore those reminders, we may suffer eternal consequences. If we think of the results of sin as God's "tough love," perhaps they will remind us to sin no more.

SCHOOL
The day after Halloween is a special day for the Catholic Church, and Ascension Catholic School knows how to celebrate. Each year, the 8th grade class of ACS prepares a grand event celebrating the saints. The students portray a saint by dressing in appropriate attire, they prepare presentations for their unique Saints’ museum to give spectators some history, and they celebrate the most inspirational Mass with students, teachers, parents, and other parishioners. Please join us at Ascension Catholic Church Tuesday, November 1, at 8:00am for a very special soul-lifting Mass. Respect Life Corner: Of Life and Freedom “The first and most fundamental step towards…cultural transformation consists in forming consciences with regard to the incomparable and inviolable worth of every human life. It is of the greatest importance to re-establish the essential connection between life and freedom. … There is no true freedom where life is not welcomed and loved: and there is no fullness of life except in freedom. … Love, as a sincere gift of self, is what gives the life and freedom of the person their truest meaning.” St. Pope John Paul II, Encyclical Letter, The Gospel of Life, No. 96 (1995).

MARRIAGE MINUTE October 30
What is keeping you from the marriage of your dreams? Every marriage launches with an incredible dream for happiness, but all too often, hardships come, and we lose the zeal to think we can have anything other than a mediocre marriage. We say to ourselves, “I guess this is all there is to marriage.”
In this week’s Gospel, Zachaeus, had the courage and ingenuity to overcome his obstacle to happiness by climbing a tree to see His Lord. For Zachaeus, his height was an obstacle, but for many of us, it is not a matter of physical stature, but a stature of attitude. We lack the courage and humility to rise above pettiness, busyness, wounded pride, comfort, and sometimes simple planning to actualize the marriage we dreamed of in the beginning.
Consider marriage enrichment activities to be the tree you climb to overcome any obstacles in your way of increased joy in your marriage. Check out www.joyfulmarriageproject.com for suggestions.

DONNELLY COLLEGE Kansas City, KS.
There is a gem in the heart of Kansas City, Kansas that offers an opportunity for individuals to transform their lives, in part, because of your archdiocese. Donnelly College is your archdiocesan-sponsored college offering an accessible and affordable Catholic education on a small campus with an incredibly diverse student body. Pope Francis calls us to help “all peoples to become the artisans of their destiny.” This call speaks to Donnelly College’s mission as we seek to empower all through higher education in our community. To learn more, visit Donnelly’s information table today, in the gathering space, after Mass or www.donnelly.edu.
NEW SPECIAL NEEDS MINISTRY IN ARCHDIOCESE
The Archdiocese has initiated a new ministry to serve people with disabilities, their families and caregivers. The Special Needs Ministry is being led by Tom Racunas. Tom was a special education teacher and administrator for over 30 years in the Wichita Public Schools. He served as director of the ministry with persons with disabilities in the Diocese of Wichita for the past six years.
Tom is eager to help Catholics be actively engaged in the life and mission of the parish regardless of type or severity of a disability. So call or email Tom at 913-647-3054 or [email protected] for special needs support.
FREE ROSARY REPAIR
There is a “good neighbor” who repairs rosaries for free. We can use any extra rosaries or spare parts for the hospitals and assisted living facilities. If you need this service or have extra rosaries or parts to donate, please contact Jean in the office at [email protected].
WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND November 18-20, 2016 January 27-29, 2017
Married Couples…Take Some Time Together!! A Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend is a weekend full of fresh love, rebirth and new beginnings. All married couples deserve a richer, fuller life together. The next weekends in Kansas City are November 18-20, 2016 and January 27-29, 2017. For more information or to apply, please visit our website: www.wwme4youandme.org or call Tony and Barb Zimmerman, 816-741-4066 or email [email protected].

On November 8th the voters of Kansas will be making very important decisions. Among them is the decision to retain our current state Supreme Court judges. This decision holds more weight now than ever before… The Kansas Supreme Court will soon decide whether the brutal practice of dismemberment abortion will continue in Kansas. All Kansas pro-life laws are at risk. Fortunately, our system allows voters to decide which judges should remain on the bench through retention elections. Please take the time to learn who these judges are and what their position is on moral issues. We recommend Better Judges for Kansas and their website www.betterjudgesforkansas.org as a great resource.
