P~ease record this article on the ServiceBulletin Reference page Of your 1958 PassengerCar Shop Manua~ supplement.

Occasionally you may receive complaints fromowners of 1958 model Studebakers or Packards ofimproper steering. The owners will generallyreport the condition as a bind in the steering,or a steering that sticks and will not recoverfrom turns to right or left. In some cases [orcars equippeo with the Flightomatic trans-missions, the report will be of a stickingtransmission remote control linkage. Where anyof these conditions are reported the followingsteps must be taken to find the cause and cor-rect the condition.

Loosen the steering column at the instru-ment board and, if the steering column springsto the right or left, misalignment of the steer-ing gear at the frame is indicated. To correctthis condition, the bolts that a tt acn the steer-ing gear assembly to the frame must be removedand flat washer added between the steering gearmounting pad and the frame in sufficient thick-ness and required location to align the gearwith the frame so that the steering column canbe positioned at the instrument board withoutdlstortion when the steering column-to-instru-ment beard bracket is tightened.

APRILBRAKE PIP: AND ~JFFLERINTERFERENCE - ALLSEDAN MODELS

PIPE1958

PLease record this article on the ServiceBu~Letin Reference page Of your 1958 PassengerCar ShoP Nanua L Supp Lement.

On some 1958 mOdel Studebaker and Packardsedans interference may occur between the rightmuffler outlet pipe and the brake pipe locatedon the differential housing. The interferenceonly occurs when a capacity load is carried inthe rear seat or when a heavy load is carriedin the trunk and the car is driven over roughroads which SUbjects it to severe bounce orjounce.

To eliminate the possibility of interferenceat this point, the position of the clip whichretains the brake pipe to the differentialhousing should be inspected on all 1958 sedanmodels tbat come into your service departmentand, the clip repositioned as required.

fOLD CLIP POSITION

. -- - ...., " NEW CLIP POSITION

Fig. 1

The position of the clip is correct, if itholds the brake pipi below tbe level of thedifferential housing (see Fig. 1). Where thecl rp holds the brake pipe above the differentialhouslng (ind1cated by the dotted lines in Fig.1), the differential housing screw must be re-moved and the position of the clip reversed.

ROAD NOISE AND/OR WATER LEAKSIN REAR SEAT COMPART~ENT -1956-57 AND 1958 SEDAN MODELSYou may be confronted with a complaint of

road noise and/or water entering the rear seatcompartment in the vicinity of the top of therear quarter trim panel near the front edge ofthe rear body glass. In most instances, youwill find tbat the noise or water enters thecompartment through the jOint between the innerand ouier rear wheel house panels. Theexpanding sealer inserted between the panelsduring assembly did not completely close thearea.

APRIL S E R V ICEThis condition may be corrected by hand

sealing the area, using DumDum applied from theunderside of the rear wheel bouse.

Use a putty knile and remove the undercoat-ing material in the top front corner 01 thewheel house; down the pillar or baffle againstthe inner and outer panel for a distance of a-bout ten inches and, along the top for aboutthe same distance.

Apply the sealer in the area between thepanels until there is a positive seal. Thisarea is deep and narrow. Therefore, apply thesealer in small quantities ana pUSh it tightlyinto the area for effective results.

A test for an opening in thIS area may beperformed by the use of a garden hose withwater applied from under the wheel house. Anyleakage will appear along the lower edge of theheadlining or from behind the quarter trimpanel.
