Speaker 1:

I can conrm that there are people out thereand possibly even up on the stage right now who are genuinelydepressed about breaking bad ending in a couple of months. There'll beno more of it left. I imagine that you could probably have kept it goingfor a couple more seasons if, if given the opportunity, I mean, why, whynow?

David Itzkoff (moderator):

Really, creatively, I am one of the people who's who,who is depressed that this, that the show is over. because of thesewonderful people here who, you know, we, we, we don't see each otherthat often these days, except at events like this, which is wonderful. Sofor, for personal reasons, I am, I am a very, sorry it's over,

(Vince Gilligan):

creatively, everything has its, every story has its beginning, middle andend. And, and in particular, I mean, historically, television shows aredesigned to be indenite in their storytelling capacity. They're designedto go on forever. Most of them. This one by its from its very, conceptionwas not, it was not designed to, to go on forever and it needed to end.And so creatively, I haven't, despite wonderful, feelings of, of, of, of, oflove and respect for the show that, that, we are very blessed to get. Idon't feel like creatively that we're ending at Tucson.

Right. When you've had some time now to, to not beWalter White anymore, I mean, do you feel, but why do you miss theguy creep back into your day to day life in any way?

David (moderator):

(Bryan Cranston):

The, the greatest character of my career, I don't anticipate being able toplay someone so rich and deep and varied. The spectrum of emotionsthat Walter White can justiably play are uncanny. It's just, it's aplayground for an actor. And, I, I, I'm so grateful for it, but I agree withVince. I think we came to a natural ending and it's time to let - there willalways be a Walter White and a Heisenberg inside me. Yeah. WheneverI need to bring it up.

Wow! Who would you like to see tonight?David (moderator):

sort of used to having sort of shallow roots that we makeintimate relationships and then we know it's coming to an end and wepull out the tree and we nd another place to plant it. And we plant thetree and it grows roots and we, we meet other friends and people thatwe love to work with and, and it's, it's kind of been that way. And sowhile we have all pulled up the roots, I don't think, I don't, I don't thinkwe'll ever will inexorably tied to each other because of breaking bad.And that's, that's a lovely thing to have,

Bryan:   We are

I think. I think die-hard breaking bad fans already known this, but thecharacter of Jesse Pinkman was not planned necessarily to be a long-term presence on the show. First of all, what the heck kind of a showwould breaking bad have been without Jesse Yeah.

David (moderator)

amn ne, bro!Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman) : D

I can't imagine it without it. You want to tell a story about when Itook you aside?(Vince):

Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman):

Yeah. I mean, you know, when I was, hired to play Jesse Pinkman onbreaking bad, I had no idea the initial plan that, he was going to meethis demise towards the end of the rst season. I mean that was reallyyour pitch to, to networks, right Like the arc of the rst season

My character would bring Walter White into the drug world and then,he would die in some horric death. And and then it would lead aWalter White, going after, you know, revenge. Yeah. To kinda avenge mydeath. but they, decided to kind of go a different route. Thank God.

otcha. That's all I needed. So I would say things like, Oh my God,Oh my God. You hear Justin Timberlake really loves the show. He comeson the show, kills Jesse and then takes over and then we spar and anairlift.

Bryan: G

but all in all, a series of Brian would mess with methroughout the tire series. and I remember in the middle, halfwaythrough the second season, Brian came up to me with just such aserious look on his face, said, gave me this big hug. And I'm like, Heybuddy. He goes, man, but it's great. Huh Did you, did you read the nextepisode And I said, no. And then he looks at me and goes, he gives meanother hug. He's like, just, just read it. It's ne. Just, and he just walksoff. Holy shit. Jesse's dying. And so I instantly go get the next episode. And he was just lying.

Aaron: No,

iconic scene that you and Briancreated together. It's perhaps the one that will be quoted for time andMemorial is just the, you know, " I am the one who knocks" scene. I'msure you'll be asked about this in every public setting you go to thisweek. But could you guys talk a little bit about the creation of that, ofthat scene?

David (moderator): There's another,

The seeds that you planted between Skylar andWalt as a couple that actually lead it leads directly, I think to that scene. The nature of their relationship and the pilot, she's, she's trying tocontrol things because that's what she knows to do as a human being.

 Anna Gunn (Skylar):

Page 8: Ca st Int erv i ew Brea k i ng Ba d...love and respect for the show that, that, we are very blessed to get. I don't feel like creatively that we're ending at Tucson. Right. When you've

She tries to control inner chaos. She tries to control things because itgives her a sense of order and it makes her feel better as a humanbeing. That's how she orders her life. It makes, she's not an emotionalperson. She's a tightly held person and he's nally saying, you don'tcontrol me. I'm not controlled by anybody. Especially you. You don'tunderstand who you're dealing with. And I think that there, it's, I canfollow that line directly from the pilot all the way to that scene. And Isaw that like a ash the other night. And it was really, really interestingto see that.

Vince:

The, the other fun thing for me in that scene, the way you guys played it,the way it was written and directed is that at the moment where yougive what is arguably, and you never know this stuff, in advanced, theonly kind of come upon it in hindsight, but in that moment you give oneof those archetypical lines or the series, I am the danger, I am the onewho knocks you're character wise. You're, you're at one of your lowestabs at power wise because, Gus, Gustavo Fring has just got you over abarrel at that point, which is, which is what, what I love about, the waythat scene was, was constructed and then, but the way you play it,you're like, yeah, I believe this guy. He's a bad ass. But, but in thecontext of the moment,

t had to come out of that sense of insecurity that hehad at that moment. Yeah. To try to get something back.David (moderator): I

Yeah. Yeah. Get it back from your wife, if not from the guy who, threatens your life, who holds it in his hand. Yeah,Vince):

I mean is there a case to be made, especially as theshow is sort of entering its homestretch I mean it's, it's a story almost asmuch about Hank as it is Walter. It is a story about a man's redemptionas much as it was about a man's corruption.

David (moderator):

Dean Norris (Hank):

Page 11: Ca st Int erv i ew Brea k i ng Ba d...love and respect for the show that, that, we are very blessed to get. I don't feel like creatively that we're ending at Tucson. Right. When you've

Yeah. I mean I think I saw that the, the, the kind of the parallel or theopposite track, kind of started to develop between Walter White andHank and, you know what's odd He, I've said this before, but he, he's,he's, he's the only guy on the show who, who, you know is notcorrupted. And it was, it was an odd, odd position to be in. And the showcalled breaking bad when he's the only guy who, who, who didn't breakbad, you know, and I harken back to when I unfortunately had to beatthis young man here, he broke bad. He'd beat me up. I did. But then Ifelt sorry about it and I, and I, and I did and he felt bad about it and hedidn't lie about it and he could have lied about it. Cause everybodywanted him to lie about it, to get away with it. Even his wife, this onehere klepto Kathy,

everybody has problems. Deal with them indifferent,ways...Betsy( Hank's wife):

but it was so, it was a, it was a, it was a, it was a great, yeah, itwas Thomas Tom Schneider episode that he wrote this great, great, great speech with Hank just saying, you know, I, I can't do it and, and I'll,I'll go in and, and, and I'll accept the consequences for, for, for the, for myactions, you know, and it was, it was a great, I love it was a great, yeah, itwas really, cause I wouldn't say it really was written so we couldn't cry.But every time I read the lines that I'm just a man, I, you know, I don'tthink I'm cut out to be a, an ofcer anymore. And it just, I almostcouldn't do it without tearing up, even on the time, you know, becausethe lines were so powerful. By the time you got there, he said, theuniverse is trying to eat. There was a long speech and he nally said, theuniverse is trying to tell me something. I'm just, I'm not the man. Ithought I was, you know, it's a really hard thing to say for any anybodyand let alone Hank, you know. And I thought that was the, his, his, hiscore and that kind of stayed through for the next couple, a coupleseasons, you know,

 Dean:

As Marie, you know, I mean she is one of the moretroubled characters and yet she's also really say that, but also she'smade, made herself very endearing. I mean, what is it like to be that, that person for a little while temporarily.

David (moderator):

I will, you know, even when she's,cause she can be a huge pain in the ass and I, but I just loved her fromthe beginning and I loved the, you left her fence cause you alwaysdidn't, you'd always stick up for her and, and I just loved her and, but Ilove that. I love her aws and it's so fun to play. And right now I'm on mynew show. I, I play character much more like me than anyone I've everplayed. And Marie was so different in front. I'm not saying there's notany of of me in there, but it was so fun to do that.

Hank's wife (Marie played by Betsy):

I mean this like purple loving freak who would also at times be the onlyvoice of reason among these really smart people who were just doing

these crazy fucking things. I was like, what are you doing You know And I, Iloved her for that and I loved that shewould surprise me. You know, thehuge scene for me, and I've, I'vetalked about this before, was theintervention scene when we shot

that in season one was like such a watershed moment, you know, justfor me in the show to really see who all these people were and how theywere to each other and, and be surprised by my character and all ofthem. It really see, you know, I just, I saw, I saw this, I saw this show justbeing amazing and going on for like ve, ve long seasons,

Page 13: Ca st Int erv i ew Brea k i ng Ba d...love and respect for the show that, that, we are very blessed to get. I don't feel like creatively that we're ending at Tucson. Right. When you've

I think. Why audiences connected to, to breakingbad. I mean, it premiered, you know, in the midst of a really harsh, youknow, economic downturn and it, it, you know, people not only found itplausible that somebody could be in as dire circumstances as Walt is,but they, they connected to it. They wanted to root for him. And in aweird way,

David (moderator):

Vince:

Honestly, again, I was not thinking that much in terms of, the terribletimes we went through starting, was it 2008 when it all kind of went toshit Yeah. I was, I was not really, thinking and there was nothing politicalI had in mind. I just, I just wanted to tell a story, but this one to me, veryinteresting man.

Page 14: Ca st Int erv i ew Brea k i ng Ba d...love and respect for the show that, that, we are very blessed to get. I don't feel like creatively that we're ending at Tucson. Right. When you've

Creator and Cast Interview.

What I was worried about in the early days was, was that people wouldnot engage with him, that we wouldn't be able to set the hook as itwere because he wouldn't be likable enough because, you know, I knewgoing into it, this guy's going to be cooking crystal meth. What, whatthe hell is worse than that I mean, it destroys whole communities isreally not anything good to be said about the crystal meth. And so oneof the reasons I wanted to work with Brian again, you know, startingwith, you know, the character who's the guy doing all this bad stuff isthat I knew he had the acting chops, but I also, I also knew he had thisbasic underlying humanity that just comes through it kind of beams outof his eyes or his, his, his expression.

I don't know where it comes from, but you root forthis guy. And I learned that on that exhale episode where he played areal villain who nonetheless you felt sorry for at the end of it all. So thatrst season I really front-loaded it. I, you know, get Brian playing thepart, you know, array a lot of, economic hardships against him, doeverything I could from a writer's perspective, from a mechanicalstorytelling perspective to make us want to root for this guy. And thenas he got worse and worse, the character got darker and darker andthen made more and more questionable choices. I thought, well, hopefully the hook is set now. People keep watching, even though theywon't like him as much, even though they won't sympathize as much.Low and behold, you know, up to the number of episodes you guys haveseen, you know, 56, 50, 54 episodes in, people are still rooting for thisguy. And I'm like, really Seriously Hey, God bless you. You know, notamazing much, but, you know, but if, if that's, if you're still digging them,I mean, I want you to be interested in him. but I would not have guessedthe character, nothing to do at Brian, but, but everything to do with thechoices the characters made, I would've guessed at this point that hewould lack sympathize ability, but not, not so for a great number ofyears.
