The Summer Art Experience of a Lifetime!

Page 2: CAAP Bro-j.indd - Creative Arts at Park

“There’s a different

atmosphere at Creative

Arts at Park. This is

not your typical camp.

It doesn’t value sports

over the arts – it treats

everything with respect.

Whether it be Pop Singing

or Ultimate Frisbee,

kids are encouraged to

pursue their dreams.”

– CIT, Former Camper

“Besides learning one

act of a Shakespeare play

in five weeks, the

kids learned a long

list of vital skills:

communication,

critical thinking,

and problem solving.

Then a light bulb

went on, “Aren’t these

the 21st century skills

we’re told that all

our children will need

if they are to thrive and

succeed in life?”

– Parent

AnimationProduce three animated group projects combining the visual punch of tradi-tional, hand-drawn animation with digital effects, editing, and sound sync. This LineStorm “pen and pixel” approach to animation has won our projects top awards at national film and video festi-vals, and many have aired on PBS, HBO and The Independent Film Channel.

Animation II DigitaI Flipbook Ages 12-15This advanced version of LineStorm I works in the traditional, hand-drawn animation approach. We dive deeply into the history and magic of classical animation. Working with light boxes, action references, engaging exercises, and animators’ planning tools, participants build their own group project, to which everyone contributes ideas and sequences. Participants take home all preparatory artwork and fl ipbooks.

Animation and PowerPoint Ages 12-15Help make the CAAP website really POP! Learn captivating hand-drawn animation techniques like squash’n’stretch, repeating cycles, and moving holds – we’ll create active visuals and links for the CAAP web-site. You will be able to design your own webpage as well, adding backgrounds and animated images, buttons, and sounds for striking rollover effects!

Department Head: PELL OSBORNCurriculum developer and award-win-ning animator, Pell Osborn holds degrees from Kenyon College and Lesley Univer-sity. He attended Harvard University for additional study in animation. A lifelong passion for animation led Pell to create the LineStorm Digital FlipBook Creative Learning Project, which merges tradition-al and computer animation into powerful tools for teaching and learning. Pell also teaches animation at MIT and the Boston Arts Academy.

Department Head: GREGG TOLLYDuring the school year, Gregg works at Brookline’s Devotion School. He holds a master’s degree in computers and curriculum, and has worked in public and private schools since 1972! Begin-ning in 1982, computers in the class-room opened new doors – program-ming, writing, color art design, video editing and audio dubbing, digital photography and alteration. According to Gregg, “Computers were made to be enjoyed and used to create beauty!”

“Thank you for a summer program that celebrates childhood and creativity, and makes everyone feel successful.” – Parent

Computer In our state-of-the-art Mac lab, classes in web design and computer art expand campers’ understanding of the funda-mentals of HTML and image editing. Learn to edit and place links, sounds, pictures, backgrounds, and movie clips.

Computer Arts All agesCreate, draw, design, and paint on the Mac. Play with lines and shapes, colors and gradients, tiling and collages, layers and contrasts, original art and modifi ed objects. Learn about marvelous art tools in common programs! Finally, set your slide show to some cool music!

Page 7: CAAP Bro-j.indd - Creative Arts at Park

Dance Dance with us around the world! You can choose from Afro-Caribbean, Improvisa-tion, Hip Hop, Jazz, Modern, or Musical Theatre Choreography classes. Each class participates in the Dance Concert at the Arts Festival. Dance is also integrated into the Musical, Junior Musical, and Showtune classes.

This class will also incorporate some acting. This is a fun and exciting opportunity for the dancers, with the help of the instructors, to create a small skit that will tie into the choreography.

Afro-Caribbean Dance I Ages 7-12If Reggae, Calypso, and Soca music and the sounds of the Caribbean make you want to move, and you are interested in a high-energy class, then come join us in Afro-Caribbean dance. You will learn a fusion of different dance techniques such as African, Haitian, Latin, and traditional Caribbean moves.

Music Be lead singer or guitarist in Rock Band! Join Jazz ‘n Blues or Folk Band and com-pose a song in Songwriting. Sign up for guitar or drum instruction. Select from a wide range of singing classes including: Pop Singing, Beatles Sing-a-Long, American Songbook, and a-CAAP-pella.

MiniTunes Ages 7-12A show tunes class for those who love to perform and those who want to learn how. Come learn to sing and dance your favorite Broadway tunes and a few original ones too!

Rock Band Ages 12-15Join together to rock the camp with this electric band! Blues, rock, and pop tunes will be rehearsed and performed by mem-bers of the group. Campers should have experience on the instruments they will be playing in the band, and will need to bring them to camp. (There will be two sets of drums and an electric bass available.)

Choose from a broad range of classes, including experimental and alternative image-making techniques, and digital practices in our up-to-date computer lab. We focus on the artistic process, empha-sizing composition, form, and the many ways in which photography allows for self-expression.

Basic Digital Photography Ages 7-10In this class for younger campers, we will learn the basics of digital photography while exploring a broad range of subjects. We begin with how digital cameras function and then take pictures with the guidance of counselors. Campers will learn how to transfer their fi les onto a computer and how to use the basics of Adobe Photoshop. Campers will learn how to make optimized images for high quality color prints, and with the help of staff will produce their own ink jet prints of some of their favorite photos. Requirements: None, but camp-ers are encouraged to use their own digital cameras.

Department Head: LAURA MCCABE Laura has been teaching photogra-phy at Creative Arts at Park for nine years. She also teaches art in New York at the Children’s Museum of the Arts and with Doing Art Together. She holds a BFA from Pratt Institute. Laura loves sharing her knowledge of photography and Photoshop with kids at CAAP and seeing all the wonderful work they create every year.

Advanced Digital Photography Ages 12-15After reviewing basic digital photography techniques and Adobe Photoshop skills, campers will be given the chance to work on individualized projects for extended periods to develop their knowledge of photography as well as their personal photographic style. The class will focus on topics such as composition, perspective, and narrative in images. While no previ-ous experience is necessary, this class is a great opportunity for campers with some basic photography experience to pursue more challenging subjects and techniques. Or, try General Sports to play favorites like kickball, capture-the-flag, or four-square. Take a Red Cross instructional swim class in our Olympic-size, heated, outdoor swimming pool or cool off with a daily free swim in the afternoon.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Grappling All ages This course offers training using tech-niques in the tradition of Gracie Barra BJJ (Carlos Gracie Jr.). Due to the popularity of grappling and BJJ in martial arts, this course is offered in two separate periods (5 or 6). The focus of the course will be on “no-gi” training but there will be opportu-nities for gi-training. The class will intro-duce basic drills, techniques in ground-fi ghting, takedowns, and “rolling” (sparring on the mats). Previous experience is helpful but not necessary.

Karate Instructor:DAVID SHIMWhen David launched the Karate Pro-gram at CAAP in 1985, he had already been studying Karate- Do (Okinawan & Japanese GoJu-Ryu & Shorinji Kempo) for many years. We will train as a group in improvisational techniques, creating scene after scene from the sublime to the ridiculous. Naturally, we will be performing for Noontime Shows and will also perform on Festival Day, taking suggestions from our audience.

Make Up All agesAll perspective actors and actresses should explore and be familiar with the world of make-up. In this fun, exciting course taught on a workshop level, campers begin by understanding how to use the basic materials. Then, we delve into the world of character make-up and touch upon such favorites as clowns and horror make-up. Campers apply make-up to actors in all camp productions.

Video Get behind and in front of the camera ev-eryday in our state-of-the-art video lab. Produce, act, and direct a soap opera, watch and recreate classic film scenes, or ham it up in video comedy sketches. Use our extensive production equipment and professional editing software to learn the craft of traditional movie making.

Video Comedy I Ages 7-11 and Video Comedy II Ages 12-15Think you might have what it takes to be a future cast member of Saturday Night Live? Being funny is harder than it looks. Being funny in a group takes teamwork and cooperation. We will begin each week focusing on a particular style of comedy. We’ll watch some videos, fi gure out what made the scenes funny, and then create our own pieces “In the style of ”Monty Python... Mel Brooks...Robin Williams...Rocky and Bullwinkle? ...Inspector Clous-seau...Adam Sandler... Will Ferrell... Seth Rogen…(to name just a few). We’ll write and produce our own video comedy sketches standing on the shoulders of these comic giants.

Video Editing – Soap Opera Ages 12-15Be part of the excitement, pressure and creativity of a television post-production company doing advanced editing and Web distribution. Using “Final Cut Express” software, we will edit title sequences, promos, and episodes of the Soap Opera for presentation to the camp at the Noontime Show. Visual Arts Explore a range of exciting visual art classes taught by professional artists. Learn the basics of drawing and painting, get your hands into some clay to make sculpture or throw a pot on the wheel. Make colored glass sculpture, carve linoleum blocks, cut, paste, and assemble found objects and colored paper in 2- and 3-D collages. Make a giant puppet or realize a fantastic creature out of paper mache. The art department explodes with color and activity as we work toward our final exhibition on Festival Day.

Altered Spaces Ages 12-15Starting with large-scale drawings of sim-ple structures… Then using these drawings as a springboard... build up away, beyond, from and behind the surface… and how big can you go?… and does it travel out of the room and around the corner and ends for no apparent reason in an inconvenient place? How about building a structure that travels from one person to another and you have to wear it for the rest of the day? For the fi rst couple of weeks we will construct a series of quick pieces using inexpensive and found materials. We will appropriate familiar spaces and make the unexpected, then dismantle and start something new.

Drawing and Painting the Landscape All Ages The relationship between human beings and their ever-changing environment is fascinating for artists. It is present in everything from ancient Chinese land-scapes to contemporary art. In this class you will have the opportunity to discover what inspires you. It might be the move-ment of the clouds or the view of the city from a hilltop. We will spend most days outdoors, experimenting with a range of materials including charcoal, pastel, watercolor, and acrylic paint.

Department Head: MICHELLE SAMOUR Michelle has been teaching at CAAP for 14 years, 10 of them as head of the Art Department. She is on the faculty of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and is an actively exhibiting artist. Michelle has been the recipient of many awards and grants from the Massachu-setts Cultural Council, the Society of Arts and Crafts and the Andrew Mellon Foundation.

Writing What kind of a writer are you? Try your hand at Fiction Writing, Screenwriting, Poetry, First-Person Narrative, and Journalism.

Oak Tree Times All ages Our camp newspaper, The Oak Tree Times, is published daily and showcases our tal-ented reporters, poets, columnists, feature writers, reviewers, and cartoonists. As an OTT staffer, you’ll become part of a tradi-tion of journalistic excellence, excitement, and exploits. Responsible for creating CAAP’s only communal source of infor-mation, the OTT staff communicates with hundreds of readers each day. If you enjoy writing, editing, or art, join our team. No previous newspaper experience required.

Writing and Illustration Ages 7-12Have you ever written a story and then felt compelled to draw a picture to help explain it? Have you drawn a picture and then all of a sudden had a fantastic story to tell? If so, then this is a class for you. Campers will write stories and then experiment with a variety of techniques to illustrate them. The stories will then be put on the computer and be presented in multimedia. Join this creative class if you dream of seeing your stories come to life.

Getting to CAAP

“This was my daughter’s fi rst year at CAAP,

and it was a wonderful experience! She learned

so much, made some great new friends, and had a wonderful time.

I was so impressed with the events at Festival Day!

Wish I had discovered CAAP years ago.”
