STUDENT SUPERVISION For safety reasons, please do not send your child prior to 8:20 in the morning. Outside supervision is provided at this time. Many students are arriving well before the start of school. All students are expected to leave the school grounds promptly by 2:50 pm unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Supervision after this time is for bus students only. Please make alternate arrangements if necessary. Perhaps dropping students off at a friends and having them walk to school is a great option!

GRADE 4 AND 5 COMMUNITY BUILDING Five divisions made the trek to visit our beautiful beach front to do some team-building while also working on their sand castle building skills. Students drew upon and demonstrated their collaborative and creative strengths to build some wonderful structures!

SPAWNING SALMON FIELD TRIP This term the Grade 2 students have been learning about salmon. They went on walking excursion to explore nature in motion at Penticton Creek where they observed salmon spawning in their natural environment. Experiential learning!

On September 28th Uplands staff and students recognized ORANGE SHIRT DAY. This important day is an opportunity for communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Many, many Uplands students were wearing orange and there were some powerful classroom discussions on the impact of Residential Schools on our aboriginal community.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR Once again Uplands is having its annual book fair during early dismissal days. Tuesday, November 6th through Thursday, November 8th at lunch time and after school from 1:25 pm – 5:00 pm. Come browse the selection of books while you’re waiting for your interview! Christmas is coming and books are always a great idea! For every $10 spent, $6 comes back to the library in books. This is a great fundraiser for our library! Please come out and support our literacy goals! We are in need of parent helpers to work at the Book Fair. Please let Mrs. Salting know if you are available or check the sign-up sheet on the PAC Bulletin board. Thank you, Mrs. Salting, Librarian

INDOORS GAMES CLUB

We are asking parents and students that would like to donate games for an indoor games club. We are looking for board games, card games or any type of game that would be suitable for a small group of kids to play in the gym at lunch. Thank You.

GOING TO BAT FOR BATS! Mrs. Maxwell's grade 3 class at Uplands Elementary school

has helped a bat!

A small bat was sleeping outside Mrs. Maxwell’s classroom

door. The class installed a ‘do not disturb’ sign and all

students were instructed to leave the bat alone and not

touch it.

It was there for 5 days until it fell to the ground and could

not latch to the wall to climb back up to safety. They spoke

to the Okanagan Community Bat Program, who came to

gently move the bat and place it safely in a bag so as to

relocate it to a safe place. The bat did manage a quick

classroom visit to Mrs. Moura’s grade 1 class before being

taken away and safely released. Bats are moving around

in the fall, as they make their way to their wintering caves

(hibernacula). Bats seem to show up in odd spots, sometimes roosting (sleeping) on building walls,

at entrances to homes, offices, business establishments, and schools. It is best to leave bats alone

as they will likely fly off in a few days.

Never handle a bat with bare hands. Bats are considered wildlife under the BC Wildlife Act and are

thus protected from harassment. We have 14 species of bats in the Okanagan, and they are all huge

consumers of insects. For more information on bats, please go to www.bcbats.ca.

BIODIVERSITY FIELD TRIP TO VASEUX LAKE!

Students from Mrs. Kuechle, Mrs. O’Neil and Mrs.

Maxwell’s classes had the opportunity to learn about

bird adaption, migration and bird banding at Vaseux

Lake Bird Observatory through Birdy Migration

Program at the Okanagan Similkameen Conservation

Alliance. They watched how birds are safely caught,

banded and recorded and then set free. Students

learned about the importance of the Yellow Breasted

PARKING AND DROP OFF

Uplands school is a very busy place in the mornings and afterschool. We ask that everyone keep the following safety measures in mind when dropping off and picking up their children:

Please DO NOT stop or park where there are YELLOW markings – these are no stopping zones.

Please DO NOT drop students off in the parking lot. This is an extremely dangerous area for children to be.

Please DO NOT stop in the parking lot unless you are in a parking spot. The bus needs to be able to park, allow students to safely get to the curb and navigate out of the lot. Cars are blocking the bus and delaying the arrival of students.

There a number of other safe locations to drop students off in the morning. Westminster Avenue to the south of the school has sidewalk access to Uplands. Uplands Place and McCauley Place back on to the school grounds and students can walk up to the field. Please leave yourself a few extra minutes in the morning to park and walk together.

TERRY FOX RUN Thank you to everyone who donated to cancer research through the Terry Fox fund. We are pleased to announce our school raised $539.00! Thank you to students, parents and teachers for their effort in running the distance Wednesday, Sept 26.

PARENT-TEACHER INTERVIEWS: SAVE THE DATE!

A reminder that November 6, 7, and 8 are Early Dismissal days for parent-teacher interviews. School is out at 1:25 pm. This is an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers to celebrate successes and discuss any concerns about their child’s learning. Teachers will be communicating with parents later in the month to set up interview times. Along those lines, as we are now fully settled in our classes, and our young learners are becoming accustomed to a new teacher and a new grade level, we encourage all parents to connect with their child’s teacher anytime you have a question or curiosity about a classroom practice. On behalf of all staff here at Uplands, we appreciate the communication and value parent input.

EARLY YEARS CENTRE The Okanagan Skaha Early Years Centre is a place for families to access the early years’ services they need. Early Years Centres across the province of BC have been established to provide families and communities access to resources such as referrals to programs for early child development, health and dental concerns, early literacy, early learning opportunities, developmental screening and much more. The Okanagan Skaha Early Years Centre (Okanagan Skaha EYC) was developed through a strong partnership between School District 67-Okanagan Skaha and Penticton & District Community Resources Society (PDCRS). The Centre is hosted by PDCRS and is offered in Parkway Elementary, Queen’s Park Elementary, Naramata Elementary, Kaleden Elementary and Summerland Food Bank & Hub. For more information about the Okanagan Skaha Early Years Centre, contact Penticton & District Community Resource Society at (250)-492-5814. Halloween Safety at Uplands School

Please discuss with your child prior

to Halloween celebrations

ALLERGIES and HALLOWEEN Halloween is a difficult time for children with allergies as there is an abundance of treats which would not normally be around. We are proud of the progress we have made to encourage families to make good food choices and don’t want to take away from this initiative just because it’s Halloween. Our brains need good fuel all year long!

At this time of year we ask that you please:

Refrain from sending products that contain or may contain peanuts

and/or tree nuts.

Encourage your children to continue to bring healthy snacks to school

Limit the number of treats your child brings to one or two for a couple of

days and then eat the rest at home.

Choose costumes appropriate for school – shoes should be suitable for learning,

outside play, physical activity (eg. outfits not too long so that they trip)

Themes should not be scary for young children

Violent props, weapons not permitted at all. Any sent will be kept in Mrs. DeVito’s

office.

Masks must not cover entire face – we need to know exactly who everyone is

Appropriate Masks allowed during costume parade only (not during instruction,

eating or outside play).

Class treats, if any, must be sensitive to allergies (a reminder to parents about

many nut/peanut allergies in our school)

Individual classroom teachers will set the plan for their day – some have students

arrive in costume and others have them get ready at lunch.
