Holy Family Day School – Practicing Thanks and Practicing Giving! Each month, the Day School chooses a character trait to focus on in Chapel. In the month of November, we talked about being thankful. We showed how thankful we are by helping with the Thanksgiving Food Drive. We are so blessed in our community to be able to feed and clothe our families that we want to remember that God has given us the grace we need to be successful in our endeavors. Several classes brought in canned food, some decorated the bags, students helped sort, and every student saw the accumulation of donations, resulting in the final distribution for Thanksgiving and Christmas! This is an invaluable lesson for all of us!

Holy Family Day School enrollment is fantastic this year. The 3 year old, 4 year old, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten classes are brimming with enthusiastic and energetic students. Our Young 3 year old classes are growing not only intellectually and socially, but their numbers are increasing as well! We do still have room for a few more students who are at least 30 months old. Call today (481-1180), to schedule a tour!

FOUND: A parishioner found several Alex and Ani bracelets with the charms intact in our parking lot. If they belong to you, please contact the Day School Office at 481-2280 to arrange their return.

Box Tops For Education: Box Top collection is a year-round program and we are so pleased with the excellent response to this fund raiser for the school. The box outside the welcome office is the place to drop off your donation. Thank You!

Farm Fresh 1234 the Community Receipts: Tell your friends, tell your family – to save their Farm Fresh receipts, and then turn them in here at Holy Family Day School. The school earns points for each dollar spent and is able to buy educational supplies each summer so every new school year starts out on the right note!

BAMBINELLI SUNDAY:

During the 3rd Sunday of Advent, families in Italy travel to Rome and bring their baby Jesus figurines from their Nativities. During that Sunday’s noon Angelus, the Pope blesses the figurines as well as the children and families that are gathered. This is called “Bambinelli Sunday” “The blessing of the Bambinelli as they are called in Rome-reminds us that the Nativity scene is a school of life where we can learn the secret of true joy”

Italian Nativity scenes are much more elaborate and filled with scenes of daily life within a village (women carrying water jugs, washing clothes, children playing, market place where things are sold, etc.) The concept is that Jesus came in the midst of our busy lives. This serves to remind us that Jesus is not in the past, but lives with us today and enters into the midst of our busy lives!

This year, Holy Family will be celebrating Bambinelli Sunday on December 14. We are asking that all children (and adults) bring their baby Jesus figurines from their Nativity scenes to Mass on December 14. After the homily, Fr. Gaudy will bless the figurines, children, and everyone. This will occur at the 8:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses.

Wishing you and your families a blessed Advent and joyous Christmas!

Peace,Tiffany Watson Director of Religious Education

CALLING ALL PARENTS OF OUR YOUNGEST PARISHIONERS: Help us make the Holy Family Cooperative Nursery a reality! Please consider donating one hour each month during Mass to serve in our nursery. Parents who use the nursery for their children during Mass will also take turns staffing the nursery. To learn more, e-mail [email protected]. Thank you.

HOLY FAMILY BOOK CLUB: Join us on Tuesday, December 2, at 7:00 p.m., for a discussion of My Life with the Saints, by Fr. James Martin. Fr. Martin masterfully weaves stories from his life into those of his favorite saints. Leading off with St. Jude, whom he affectionately dubs “the saint of the sock drawer” (where his statue of the saint of impossible causes took up residence after the author entered high school), Fr. Martin also relates how various saints have affected his life. For more information, please contact Mike McCormick at 419-0145 or [email protected].

The Immaculate Conception, a solemnity celebrated on December 8, is the patronal feast of the United States and a Holy Day of Obligation (Mass at Holy Family at 9:00 a.m.) In 1854, Pope Pius IX's solemn declaration, Ineffabilis Deus, clarified with finality the long-held belief of the Church that Mary was conceived free from original sin. In proclaiming the Immaculate Conception of Mary as a dogma of the Church, the pope expressed precisely and clearly that Mary was conceived free from the stain of original sin. This privilege of Mary derives from God's having chosen her as Mother of the Savior; thus she received the benefits of salvation in Christ from the very moment of her conception. This great gift to Mary, an ordinary human being just like us, was fitting because she was destined to be Mother of God. The purity and holiness of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a model for all Christians. Mary is honored at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as the Patroness of the United States of America. In May of 1846, twenty-one bishops and one archbishop attended the Sixth Provincial Council of Baltimore, along with their theologians. It was at this Council that the American Hierarchy named for the first time, the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception as the Patroness of the United States. Pope Pius IX ratified this action of the American hierarchy in February 1847.

Immaculate Conception Fiesta Sunday, December 7, 2014: The SAMAHANG TAGALOG invites you, your family and friends to celebrate: The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary with Mass at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, 2014, here at Holy Family. We will have a grand fiesta to follow Mass. ALL ARE WELCOME (this will fulfill Holy Day of Obligation for Dec. 8). For more information please contact Lumen Barbero 718-4210 or Merla Marcelo 288-3524.

PRAY FOR THE SICK AND PRAYER REQUESTS: If you have added someone’s name to our “Pray for the Sick” and/or “Prayer Requests,” please let us know if that person needs to be taken off the list because they have recovered or because they have died.

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH”In the past few years, vegetable gardens have become more popular. What a wonderful turn of events in the campaign to preserve the Earth’s well-being! Gardening in any form offers numerous benefits, some of which would be: it is one of the best stress-relieving activities; it exercises our muscles and burns calories; gives a feeling of excitement and anticipation as you await the rewards of your labor; the vegetables are fresh and tasty. Admittedly, this is not the proper season to discuss gardening, but it provides an opening for my topic. Gardening, especially vegetable gardening, is a great learning tool for children, teaching lessons about delayed gratification and where our food comes from, offering opportunities for them to be working with the soil, providing them the experience of watching the plants grow and the awareness that they contributed towards the harvest of the produce. Well, our pre-school students have planted a vegetable garden located against the outside wall in the back of our worship center by the playground. Our thanks to eagle scout, Ryan Schleicher, who headed up the construction, and to Lynnhaven River Now, who provided materials and consultation. The garden is a 2 ft. wide raised garden, having 4 rain barrels. Recently having toured it myself, I was amazed at the variety and growth of the plants, some of which are herbs, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard. Our students have done a great job!!! Give yourself a treat and tour the garden yourself!

FROM THE FOOD PANTRY The Food Pantry was open this past Saturday, and our shelves are bare. We help between 120 and 180 people and families at each Saturday Food Pantry! We hope to give each of these people two bags of food, but sometimes we can only fill one bag. Please be as generous as you can. This week we are asking for: Spaghetti Sauce, Jelly, Pancake Mix, Oatmeal.

A Challenge The call to overcome poverty and to uphold human dignity is not new. It is as old as the prophets and as current as today’s headlines. Today, this challenge is especially compelling because we have the capacity to make a difference and because the impact of rapid globalization makes it more urgent. Building on past progress and new opportunities, we can make this a time for hope. Hope offers the promise that, with God’s help, shared sacrifice, wise investment, and renewed commitment, we can actually reduce substantially the levels of poverty, hunger, and human deprivation in our own land and around the world.

The First Letter of John calls us to the task:If anyone is well-off in worldly possessions and sees his

brother in need, but closes his heart to him, how can the love of God be remaining in him? Children, our love must be not just words or mere talk, but something active and genuine.

This is a time not for “just words or mere talk,” but for “active and genuine” commitment by Catholics in the United States to work with others to make a place at the table for all God’s children.

From “A Place At The Table: A Catholic Recommitment to Overcome Poverty and to Respect the Dignity of All God’s Children – A Pastoral Reflection of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. Issued by USCCB, November 13, 2002”

THE GREATER HAMPTON ROADS DIAPER BANK distributes diapers free to 30 plus partners in the cities of Newport News, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk who work with those in need. We currently receive requests from those agencies for 90,000 diapers a month and are only able to fill about 20,000 a month. Individuals can donate by contacting [email protected] or by phone at 757-472-8934.

CRISIS PREGNANCY CENTER OF TIDEWATER is a Christ-centered organization with a calling to reach out to women and families involved in crisis-related pregnancies by offering real help for the present, hope for the future, and healing from the past. In the past decade, an average of more than 8,000 abortions have been performed each year in South Hampton Roads. This means for every two babies born, one will lose its life to abortion. More lives are lost to abortion than any other cause of death. Crisis Pregnancy Center exists to save lives, spare hearts and further the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They want their clients to know that they genuinely care and have no financial gain from their pregnancy decision. Crisis Pregnancy Center raises all financial support for their ministry through private funding.
