Welcome back after our Easter break. I hope that families were able to spend some time together and regroup after a fast and hectic beginning to the year. It is hard to believe that we are in the middle of April already. With the busyness of our lives in mind, I thought I would take this opportunity to outline some important “Identity and Ministry” events for your sons and for our community during the upcoming Term. Wednesday 24 April 8.30am ANZAC Liturgy, Callan Centre (all welcome) Sun 28 – Tues 30 April Kairos 3 and 4 Year 12 Retreats Every morning in May 8.25am All invited to begin each day in May, Mary’s month, with a Hail Mary at the Memorial

Garden Thursday 2 May at lunchtime “Detention for Detention” – a national ERA (Edmund Rice Advocacy) for Change” event, an act of solidarity with people, especially children, who have sought asylum and are currently living indefinitely in detention centres. More information at www.eraforchange.com Friday 3 May 8.45am Mass to celebrate to Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Rice Monday 6 – Friday 10 May Live Below the Line week – more info from Mr Corfield and Mrs Watson on following

page Saturday 11 May Paddies Van Blanket and Sleeping Bag drive, Curlew Park (more info to come) Edmund Rice Foundation dinner, Brisbane Convention Centre – see www.erf.org.au for more details Monday 20 – Friday 24 May Year 9 Emmaus Retreats Friday 14 June End of Term 2 Liturgy If you would like any more information about any of the above, please contact me any time on [email protected]. Thanks very much and have a great term. The “Live Below The Line Challenge” is on again this year. This is where for one week we live on $2 a day (for food) from 6 –10 May. Why $2 a day? In 2005, the World Bank defined the extreme poverty line as living on less than US$1.25 (the current equivalent of $2 in Australia) per day. The rules are below if you would like to think about it. We’re hoping to get plenty of student involved this year and we hope to get plenty of staff joining them as well. You can certainly work in teams and put your money together to get yourself some good meals. It’s always fun if you get together with a group of mates and do the challenge as a group. Everyone throws in $10 for their shopping for that week and as a group you split the food amongst each other. For those who did it last year I think we can all admit it was a tough but worthwhile experience and gives us some insight to living on the other end of the scale.

WANTED—SOMEONE TO DOCUMENT THEIR $2 A DAY

Anyone willing to do a video diary of their $2 a day week Instagram of your $2 a day week Twitter/Facebook updates of your $2 a day week.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

Parents and students in Year 10 are advised that Skills Tech is running their “Trade Taster Program” once again in 2013. This was a very popular and successful program undertaken by a number of Year 10 students last year. If you a year 10 student who likes practical work whereby you enjoy working with your hands and you are considering a career as a tradesman then this program may suit you. The program runs in Terms 3 and 4 this year (excluding school holidays). Students attend one day per week at the Skills Tech Campus at either Bracken Ridge, Eagle Farm or Acacia Ridge. Over the course of the semester students will undertake training in 3 different trade areas. Students who successfully complete all components of the program will be given preference into the VET in Schools Program in 2014. The VET in Schools Program refers to student subject selection in Years 11 and 12. This process will be explained in detail to Year 10 parents and students in August. Put briefly here, students may opt to select a VET Certificate Course as one of their senior school subjects. Again, they would attend TAFE one day per week. As yet the trades being offered have not been finalised but students will likely be able to select from the following: - Students are generally required to work in 2 or 3 of the trade areas during the semester. As part of the selection criteria it is necessary for the student to be achieving a C or better for English and Maths. The cost is $81 per student and is payable to Skills Tech. If you are interested in applying for the program please see either Mrs Nott or myself to collect a “Student—Personal Details” form. Expressions of Interest close on 3 May 2013, so please discuss and move promptly if you are interested. QCS TEST Year 12 students who are OP eligible and believe they may have grounds for special provision must see me immediately. Applications for special provision for the QCS Test must be submitted by May 21. Grounds for special provision include: Application forms must be accompanied by documentation from a medical practitioner or appropriate institution in many cases documentation must be dated no earlier than 1 January 2012 in some cases no earlier than 1 January 2013.

Mr Chris Campbell Armidale Tour

Over the final weekend of the Easter vacation 21 Year 7 students accompanied by their coaches, set out for the Armidale school’s annual Year 7 rugby tournament.

Games were played throughout Saturday and Sunday morning. The St Patrick’s team played a magnificent style of spirited running rugby and as such won 4 out of 5 games. This is the best St Patrick’s performance at the Car-nival.

Expertly coached by Mr Brendan Ryan and Mr Steve Law-rence, the boys never say die attitude saw them recover from pressure situations against teams who were often much bigger. Our lads applied themselves throughout every match, never took a backward step and simply ran the other schools off their feet.

Apart from the rugby the tremendous spirit and camara-derie displayed by the team was inspiring. The bus trip down and back was a highlight for all members of the squad, with many boys opting to return to Brisbane on the team bus rather than go home with their parents.

Many thanks to the large number of parents who braved the cold and made the 6 hour journey south to support the boys. Thanks also to staff member Mrs Liz Devine who gave willingly of her time to supervise the boys. Also to coaches Ryan and Lawrence whose lovely manner and genuine affection for the team created the wonderful spir-it within the team.

Final Results:

Game 1 - SPC 7 d Scotts College 0

Game 2 - St Ignatius 7 d SPC 5

Game 3 SPC 24 d St Lawrences 12

Game 4 SPC 22 d Padua 12

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope all families enjoyed the time with friends and families. All families would have received their son’s Term 1 Report over the Easter break and I hope there has been an opportunity to sit down and discuss the results and comments with your son. This Term is a very short term. It is important that boys get into the routine of regular homework and study. All boys should be completing regular homework each night. If your son claims he has no homework please contact his teachers. STUDENT OFFICE It is important that the following procedure is followed so that minimal disruption can take place. Please take the time to review these procedures that will assist the Student Office. STUDENT EARLY DEPARTURES FOR DOCTOR, DENTAL, HOSPITAL APPOINTMENTS Where possible, these should be organised out of school time. If it is not possible students should: Bring a note from his parents. PA announcements can only be made at the start of tutor group and at lunchtimes). If a last minute appointment has to be made the Student office will require at least 2 hours’ notice so a message can be passed onto the student. Staff are not permitted to get students out of class at short notice. Students will need to report to the student office to sign out (he must present his early departure note from his parents, it is not the responsibility of the Student Office to ring parents) on departure and again on return.

STUDENT OFFICE A FEW MATTERS WILL ASSIST THE FUNCTIONING OF THE STUDENT OFFICE TO HELP ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS. Please update your contact details – phone numbers and

email addresses. Please be aware that PA announcements can only be

made at the beginning of break times during the day to minimize classroom disruptions. This means that messages cannot always be forwarded immediately to students.

This restriction on the use of the PA will also result in students not being able to be called to the Student Office to be collected by parents at all times. If you are to collect your son during the day for an appointment please ensure he has a note in his diary to show his teacher so he can leave his classroom and meet you in the Student Office.

SATURDAY SPORT I wish to remind all students in Years 8-12 that they must wear the College uniform travelling to and from the various sporting grounds. If students are supporting other teams throughout the day they must be in full school uniform. Students who are not wearing the College uniform will be asked to leave. It is important that parents assist us in this matter. PASTORAL INFORMATION EVENING The College will hold an information evening on Tuesday 14 May. The topic of the evening will be “Role of Fathers in their Son’s lives”. Paul Gibney will be the presenter. Please reserve a seat by telephoning Maxine Nott on 3631 9031 Mary Mackillop Social: Year 8 to 12 only. Friday 19 April theme “Tropicool”. 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Cost is $15.00. DEBATING NEWS The weather was not the only disturbance in our atmosphere last night – SPC Debaters were back in action, whipping up a fierce storm of argument. Our Year 11 Team 2 (Matthew Fegan, Sam Huth, Louis Emery and Johan Baines) made their 2013 season debut (with their first round a forfeit victory). Cheered on by the ever present Battalion and a huge parent turnout, these boys were in solid form against the quality opposition from St Paul’s, with our boys proving victorious in arguing that we really shouldn’t regret the rise of social media. We thought we’d heard the last of the Kardashian’s in 2012, but this team of seasoned campaigners, now under the expert guidance of Mr Brough, snuck in a sneaky mention for a bit of light comic relief in their calculated attack. Whilst we had mixed results with our Year 9 teams, all the boys have continued to show marked improvements, with Jayden Callow and Jesse Goldspink from Team 2 even being singled out by the adjudicator as showing particularly impressive development. Whilst the English teacher in me was hard to convince in their argument that only Math and Science should be compulsory in Years 10-12, Jesse’s speech was so engaging I was certainly entertaining the idea. Congratulations to Team 1 who remain undefeated in 2013. This team made the finals last year and are on track for another excellent season under the tutelage of Mr Seers. Mr Luke Donatini Director of Sport

The Easter break this year was definitely a busy time for the St Patrick’s College Sporting Program. Over the past two weeks our students were involved in: Under 14 Sydney Sporting Tour (Rugby and Football) Easter Rugby Camp (Runaway Bay) Easter Football Camp (Alexander Headlands, Sunshine Coast) Melbourne Cross Country Tour Year 7 Armidale Ruby Tour Rugby and Football Coaching Clinics, Curlew Park Cross Country Training With everything outlined above we have calculated that there were in excess of 700 St Patrick’s College students involved in some capacity within the College’s sporting program over the Easter break. To all involved (the students, their parents, the coaches and staff) we would sincerely like to thank you all for your contribution, support and commitment to our various sporting programs. We are confident that these continuing programs, camps, tours and clinics do make a significant difference not only to our sporting success in general but also in building our College’s overall spirit and community. It was truly wonderful to see such involvement and to also be a part of it – Thank you! St Patrick’s College ‘Old Boys’ Within the American Sporting Arena We recently received some exciting news regarding two of St Patrick’s College ‘Old Boys’ who are making themselves known within the American sporting scene.

Joe Gardener – NFL (kicker/punter) Jason Kilby – Major League Baseball (pitcher)

Joe Gardener (Age 27) Some may remember and know of Joe’s success as he has spent most of his years since leaving St Patrick’s College playing pro-fessional rugby in Portugal and Japan. Some may also remember that he has always had a ‘mean’ punt kick on him since his school days at St Patrick’s College. After a year of playing College ball in America (as a punter), Joe earlier this year attended the 2013 NFL draft camp and since then has turned a few heads and is on the verge of being picked up in the NFL as a kicker. Please see the below links which outlines some of his achievements and shows some footage of Joe in action.

JASON KILBY (AGE 21) During (and since) his days at St Patrick’s College Jason’s has always had a passion for Baseball. He has played club baseball in Brisbane for many years since he was young and developed into a very good pitcher. He often used this great arm of his to also throw Javelin for St Patrick’s College. In 2009 he made the Australian U18 Baseball Team achieving good success as a pitcher. After leaving St Patrick’s College he keep up his baseball and pitching pursuits whilst going to TAFE to complete his Certificates in Personal Training and this year commenced university to study Commerce. To his fortune, Jason’s baseball prowess has shone and on March 26 2013, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds Major League Baseball Team (as a pitcher). Jason leaves for Arizona in the next few weeks to take up his hopefully long and successful career in American Major League Baseball. Please see below for a recent article on Jason Kilby. http://thebaseballdigest.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/more-on-the-jason-kilby-signing/ We, as a College are very proud of both Joe and Jason achievements. They have followed their sporting passion and pursuits with commitment and hard work and it is absolutely fantastic to see their goals now starting to come to fruition. We wish them every success and are keen to follow their progress as they chase their sporting dreams. OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS Liam Ferris (Year 5) & Krishankuma Maisuria (Year 7) – selected into the Metropolitan North Primary Basketball Team

to compete at the Queensland Championships in Cairns from 13th to 16th June. Thomas Giuliano (Year 8), David Lauchs (Year 10) 7 Russell McCracken (Year 10) – selected into the Metropolitan

Currently seeking interest from any students from U13 through to Opens who would like to be involved in club basketball during Term 2. This will provide an excellent build up to the AIC season and will allow players to work with other SPC boys in developing combinations. All players are welcome regardless of previous experience. Most games are held at Boondall Entertainment Centre. Games are held on Sunday afternoon/evening (This will not impact any Term 2 SPC Sport). There will be no training sessions for these teams; games will be used to develop different

combinations over the season. No fees for uniforms; students wear their SPC Basketball uniform. Registration fees are valid for the Championship Season and Summer Season (21 April – 8

November including holidays). Participation in the summer competition is at player discretion. This is a ‘user pays’ system; students are expected to cover all costs associated with the competition

(Contact Mr Meehan for fee info).

Mrs Andrea Sked P& F

On the evening of Thursday 28 March and on Good Friday, the Shorncliffe community hosted the annual Bluewater Festival at Lower Moora Park Shorncliffe. It was a great community event with a large number of locals and visitors enjoying the beautiful weather and start of the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race. This year St Patrick’s P&F Committee decided to operate a stall, come together as a community at a very special time of the year and as a bonus take the opportunity to raise just over $1,000 that will certainly be put to good use at a later date. On the Thursday night we took the opportunity to sell ‘glow products’ to the children, it was a lovely sight to see the beach alight with glowing colours, as the fireworks rained overhead. The sale of these products went better than anticipated and it was a sell out by around 7.30 pm. On Good Friday we were selling hot cross buns, half a dozen to take home or a single bun with jam and butter. The sale of these went beyond our expectations and we completely sold out by 11.00am. With the beautiful sunny weather continuing throughout Friday the cold drinks were a hit and had to be restocked around noon for the afternoon rush. All in all it was a wonderful time and the volunteers had the opportunity to present a positive face of St Patricks to the community and were the only school represented at the event. Behind the counter, we had the chance to meet locals, current students, old boys, past parents and even a few very excited youngsters, who advised us proudly that when they got big they would be attending St Pat’s. I would like to say a special thanks to all the individuals and families who took the time out of their weekend to volunteer in assisting with the stall, be it set up, serving or assisting in the clean up. Special mention needs to go to the Beasley, Ingeri and Bates families and also Tim Beasley who assisted tirelessly throughout the weekend. A big thank you also to Rod at McDonalds Bracken Ridge, who, kindly paid for the hot cross buns and donated the jam and butter.
