We now wait to receive the QCST results later in the year. In the next week I will email all families details of the proposed new sports shirt. I have had discussions at P & F meetings and with staff over recent months and the options I will email is the result of this consultation. I am very keen to receive feedback regarding the proposed options. Please note that any introduction of a new sports shirt would be over a staged period of two or three years. It is also important to note that the colours in the email are not exact. e green in the body of the shirt would match the green of our existing sports pants and the gold would match the gold of our current sports pants. I would appreciate feedback after I send the email with the options attached, so if you have any comments please then email me at [email protected]. I will continue to provide updates as the year progresses. Congratulations to Marcus Ferguson and Taitaifono Reupena who competed for Queensland in the recent 15 Years National Volleyball Championships. e Queensland team won the gold medal and Marcus was subsequently selected in the 15 Years Australian Volleyball Merit Team. Well done! Earlier this year I invited parents to provide feedback to me regarding the College bus runs in preparation for a meeting I had with Translink. I thank the large number of parents who provided feedback. A significant issue which surfaced was the possibility of providing a bus from the Redcliffe area and another from the Bridgeman Downs/Albany Creek area. To date I have received no response from Translink. However, I have contacted ompsons Bus Services to investigate the possibility of establishing these bus runs. I will continue to investigate these options and will keep families informed of any progress. Finally this week, my congratulations go to the 1st XI football team who last week were grand finalists in the Uhl Sports Cup State Soccer Championships. COMMUNICATION
The College has significantly improved communication procedures with the introduction of the Calling online, the SPC App and our new intranet, Connect. The next stage of our communication plan is the commencement of a St Patrick’s College Facebook page. Final design amendments are being completed and from next week you will be able to ‘Like’ the St Patrick’s College Facebook official page.
Facebook pages obviously include photos and if any parents are uncomfortable with the possible use of photos of their son on the Official College Facebook page, can you please email me or send me a letter indicating your desire to not have any photo of your son used on our Facebook page.
PADDIES GARDEN SCARECROW
As part of the Paddies Garden at the front of the Morrissey Building, a scarecrow has been erected to deter the birds from the garden. At our recent Open Day, a competition was run to name the new scarecrow. The name selected by the panel is Mr Fiddlesticks. Congratulations to Louis Emery in Year 11 who wins a SPC cap for the winning name.
CIC TRACK & FIELD
The CIC Track and Field Carnival will be held next Monday and Wednesday. 49 athletes have been selected to represent St Patrick’s and it will be important for us to support them. The major carnival is on Wednesday at QSAC . It is the final competi-tion for CIC in its current format with the GPS schools not being members of CIC from 2014. Because of this it has been decided to send all Year 5, 6 and 7 students to the CIC Track and Field Carnival to support our athletes and to mark this significant moment in CIC history.
INDIA IMMERSION
A number of our Year 11 students have been selected for the India Immersion. Supporting the communities we visit in India is a significant aim for the group. The boys have been conduct-ing car washing and now have planned a ‘Spider’ day to help raise funds. TOMMORROW at morning tea ‘Spiders’ will be for sale for $2.

Year 12 is a year of “last times”: last Maths lesson, last assignment, last game for St Pat’s, last tuckshop deluxe hotdog, last House assembly, and so on. Last week, boys had their last QCS Prep lesson before this week completing the actual test – hopefully this “last time” was a good one. This year is also the last time most of our Year 12s will not vote in an election. Therefore, whoever forms government this weekend and whomever becomes Prime Minister will be judged by our current Year 12 students in a few years from now. This article is not about political sides, and certainly not about encouraging or discouraging young people to vote in a particular way. It is, however, about encouraging our graduating students to begin to raise their awareness of issues affecting people in our society. It is becoming clear that many of our politicians today believe the best way to increase their vote-winning capacity is to appeal to our self-interest – which party will I vote for so I can personally get further ahead? It is my belief that in doing so, our politicians have misunderstood us. I believe that if political leaders want our respect and indeed our votes, they should be appealing to our innate desire for everyone to be better off, not just ourselves. Winston Churchill, among others, said words to the effect of: “A society can only be judged by the way in which it treats its weakest members.” Like Pope Francis, Br Philip Pinto and many others, I subscribe to this theory. I also firmly believe that after being educated at St Patrick’s, our young men will have a strong sense of it as well.
Of course, there are many election issues, ranging from the economy to health, education and broadband technology. Key questions for me though, and I think for those looking at this election from a Catholic and Edmund Rice perspective, are:
Which policies are designed to look out our most needy? Who are our most needy? Those with disabilities, our first
Australians, our newest Australians ie refugees and asylum seekers? All of the above plus more?
Which Party, if any, is appealing to our human desire to look out for each other in every sense – economically, educationally, compassionately?
These are tough questions, not easy to answer in this current political climate. Our young people, including our current Year 12s, have a wonderful opportunity and a big responsibility in the coming few years. As Phil Glendenning, Director of the Edmund Rice Centre and President of the Australian Refugee Council said to some students on Monday of this week, politicians fear young people, as they don’t know which political side they are going to favour. Politicians want those young people’s votes, so will respond to the voices and the ideals of our young people. I encourage our current Year 12s, who for the last time will not vote this year, to make sure their voices are heard as they use the skills and knowledge they have acquired during their schooling to try to make a better world for all people, not just themselves. Whatever happens on and after Saturday, let’s hope for a re-focus on the needs of our society’s most needy. This is after all, the central message of the Gospel.

This week is Child Protection Week, all students gathered in House groups to participate in an education campaign on child safety. House Dean’s delivered the presentation which outlined: General safety messages Knowing and understanding the signs Establishing a network of people to talk too Speaking and trusting a real person Parent/Guardian Teacher House Dean Counsellor Friend Bullying Staying Safe How to report information St Patrick’s Bullying Portal Outside agencies The Daniel Morcombe Foundation has developed an App that can be used as an information gathering service. “ The 'Help Me' App is a great way to not only help keep kids safe, but assist people of all ages, from 7 to 97, covering all kinds of personal emergency situations”. The positive, calm attitude shown by all the boys was excellent to see. There was a degree of nervousness about but a very quiet determined manner as well. We certainly hope the boys’ effort is matched by their results at the end of the year. YEAR 12 STUDENT TERM EXIT PROCEDURE This Friday 6 September students in Years 12 will be involved in a Term exit process. The process will involve students being signed off by the Academic and Pastoral areas of the College. Year 12 students will meet with their House Deans during Period 7 and once they have been processed are able to leave school to commence their block exams. If a student has not
fulfilled his Academic or Pastoral commitments he will be required to stay at school until all those commitment have been fulfilled during exam block. All students must have their parents/guardians sign the forms.
LIBRARY It’s getting near the end of term when all boys have to have their diaries signed. Please remember that we will not sign off any boy who has overdue books. If the book has been lost they will need to pay for it. On another note, it’s time to visit the library at lunchtime to borrow for holiday reading and our elibrary is available 24/7
EXAM BLOCK PRIVILEGES All students in Years 11 and 12 have what is known as block exams. This allows boys to stay home when they do not have an exam. This time should be used in a productive way that will assist them to achieve the best possible results. It is definitely not a time to get extra hours at their part time jobs. The library is available for those students who wish to study at school. Some items that need to be reinforced are:
Block Exams is a privilege not a right.
All normal school rules apply.
Students must attend school in full school uniform, even if they are only coming to school for a short period of time.
Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds for any reason during the day if they are at school for the whole day.
IPods and Mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds.
LOST PROPERTY At the end of each day a large amount of lost property is handed into the Student Office. A large percentage of the lost property is not labelled. I cannot stress how important for all students to label all clothing clearly and take responsibility for their own personal items. At the end of the term any lost property that is not claimed and not named will be either returned to the Uniform Shop to be resold or will be given to St Vincent de Paul.
ORIENTATION EVENING 2014 The next intake of new students to St Patrick’s will begin with the 2014 Orientation Evening on 14 October. This is an important occasion as we welcome the new families to St Patrick’s and it would be wonderful to have a number of current families to assist with this evening. We require parents to assist with the meeting and greeting, a welcome BBQ, helping serve drinks in the tuckshop and with supper. This coming Monday 9 September and Wednesday 11 September our College’s Junior Track and Field Team will compete at the annual CIC Track and Field Championships to be conducted at the University of Queensland Track and State Athletics Facility respectively. The athletes have been working hard on improving their performances and are all looking forward to the coming days of competition. We, as a College, wish them well and every success for next Monday and Wednesday’s CIC Track and Field Championships. OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS Tyson Rose (Year 7), Jake Pappin (Year 7), Ethan Rees (Year 7) & Conrad Skelton (Year 7) – recently competed at the Queensland Primary Schools Rugby Union Championships in Goondiwindi as members of the Metropolitan North Team. Their team was victorious and finished the tournament undefeated and defeating Metropolitan West in the final. Ethan Ryan (Year 5) – selected in to the Metropolitan North Primary Track & field Team to compete at the Queensland Primary Track & Field Championships to be held at QSAC on 15 and 16 October 2013. Daniel Gerandonis (Year 12) & Corey Sargent (Year 10) – recently competed in New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman Squash Challenge as part of the Queensland Schools Squash Team. Daniel was named as Captain of the Queensland Team. Queensland claimed the Gold medal in the Australian State Challenge. Both Corey and Daniel were then both selected into the Australian Schoolboys Squash Team to compete against New Zealand on the final day in a test match. Benjamin Gould (Year 8) - recently returned from competing for Australia in Table Tennis at the Oceania Table Tennis Championship in New Caledonia. He achieved one gold medal, one silver medal and three bronze medals throughout the course of the championships. He competed against other athletes from Korea, Singapore, China Tapei, France, United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Fiji, Cook Islands, New Guinea and Thailand. Congratulations Ben on a fantastic achievement.

Our hockey team has been competing in the BHA Metropolitan Schoolboys Cup this season. They are semi- final playoff this Friday at Burringbah, Chermside, playing against Brisbane Boys College at 4 pm. The team, under the leadership of Alex Bhugon, has only lost one game this season.

Sandgate & Districts Junior Tennis Club, our Deagon Courts, have a mini internal competition each Friday afternoon, 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm, which is open to St Patrick’s College students at $3-00/player. Brother Pritchard is in attendance to take the students down after school. It is aimed for the beginning or weaker players who have/have not made one of our CIC or AIC regular teams and is usually a good evening’s experience of round robin tennis.
