Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, With Term 3 rapidly coming to its conclusion it is appropriate to use this edition of the Calling to give an update on a number of activities currently underway at St. Patrick’s College. Firstly, a House System update. In last week’s Calling I announced the new House Deans for 2011. As a result of consultation amongst the Community, a decision has been made on House names and colours. After much deliberation the decision was made to look at names that were outside the St. Patrick’s College community but still associated with the Christian Brothers and St. Patrick’s College. As a result the names chosen are as follows:- Treacy - Br Treacy was the first Provincial (leader) of the Christian Brothers in Australia - House Colour will be Teal - House Dean will be Mr Charles Brauer Rice - The name of Rice refers to Edmund Rice and also to his daughter Mary - House Colour will be Orange - House Dean will be Mr John Cross Xavier - St. Francis Xavier was renowned for his missionary work. This was a significant reason that the Brothers in Queensland named their newly formed Province in Queensland in 1967 as St. Francis Xavier Province. - House Colour will be Maroon - House Dean will be Mr Craig Gunn The process of House Formation will continue throughout the remainder of the year. Work with the allocation of students and staff to the new Houses is now completed and the selection of House Leaders for 2011 will begin shortly. Secondly, a building update. As you can see the new building program is progressing well with the second floor being poured this week. The project is a week or so behind schedule due to rain interruptions but importantly on budget. The project is due for completion by the end of 2010 and will be ready for use at the start of 2011. The building is certainly starting to take shape but over the next month or so we will see the overall shape and design form. Thirdly, an IT update. As a result of funding from the Federal Government the College has been investigating a range of options for the ongoing support of IT at St. Patrick’s College. We are currently investigating the option to supply students (in certain year levels) with a Netbook (small laptop) with the view of progressing this to other year levels in subsequent years. There is still some significant research to be done to fully investigate this option, including what infrastructure work needs to be done to the College’s current IT network. At the last couple of Parents and Friends meetings, information has been given including displaying the Netbook to be supplied. I will continue to keep families informed about this initiative over the remainder of the year. Congratulations to the Sports Support Group for an outstanding Trivia Night last Saturday. There was a great crowd, fun times were had by all and all funds raised will be directed back in to the College’s Sports Program. Well done to all involved. Finally this week, I remind all families that term 3 finishes on Friday 17 September. There will be an end of term Liturgy at 12.45pm and students will be dismissed at 1.30pm Term 4 begins on Monday 4 October and the summer uniform (no ties for Years 5-10, no blazers for Years 10-12) is to be worn. Have a great week. God Bless Dr Michael Carroll College Principal 9 September 2010 No. 28 Term 3 Concludes Friday 17 September at 1.30pm Term 4 Begins Monday 4 October at 8.30am

This week a number of issues have arisen out of inappropriate postings on Social Networking sites. Posting of offensive comments or images of others could result in criminal charges being laid by the Queensland Police. All students in Years 5-11 have attended information sessions regarding this matter. However as parents it is important that you monitor your son’s activities in the following areas: • How long is he spending on social networking sites? • View his profile to make sure that personal information is not being disclosed. • How many friends does your son have on his Facebook profile? • What is the level of security on your son’s Facebook profile?

In subsequent editions of the Calling I will provide more information regarding this issue. End of Term – All students should be very busy with major pieces of assessment due in all grades. Parents can assist their sons by ensuring you know their exact assessment schedule. Every student should have a copy and assessment calendars are also available on the College website. Sometimes a student just needs someone to help get him organized during this busy section of the term. It is

also vitally important that each student gets the little things right: grooming, uniform, diary, punctuality, equipment, procedures and manners all help students succeed. If you have any concerns I again encourage you to contact your son’s House Dean. Exam Block Privileges: All students in Years 11 will commence what is known as block exams. This allows boys to stay home when they do not have an exam. This time should be used in a productive way that will assist them to achieve the best possible results. It is definitely not a time to get extra hours at their part time jobs. The library is available for those students who wish to study at school. Some items that need to be reinforced are: • Block Exams is a privilege not a right. • All normal school rules apply. • Students must attend school in full school uniform, even if they are only coming to school for a short period of time. • Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds for any reason during the day if they are at school for the whole day. • IPods and Mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds.

The Year 5 Camp: All Year 5 students have received an information package for parents. The permission slip should be returned to classroom teachers by the end of the week. If there are any questions or concerns please contact me. Lost Property: At the end of the term any lost property that is not claimed and not named will be either returned to the Uniform Shop to be resold or will be given to St Vincent de Paul. Public Transport: Boys who catch the train to and from school are reminded that they are not to break their journey. If they are changing trains at Northgate Station they must catch the first available train to their destination. Students must not wait around on the platform for friends and then catch the late train as this often delays their arrival to school. Orientation Evening 2011: The next intake of new students to St Patrick’s will begin with the 2011 Orientation Evening on 11 October. This is an important occasion as we welcome the new families to St Patrick’s and it would be wonderful to have a number of present families to assist with this evening. We require parents to assist with the meeting and greeting, a welcome BBQ, helping serve drinks in the tuckshop and with supper. If you can help please contact Mrs. Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office (3631 9070).

STUDIES

Examinations, Assignments, and Homework

Here we are at the business end of Term 3 and Years 8 and 9 students are preparing for Major Tasks and examinations.

Below is a quick checklist for Middle Years Scholars to use in preparing for their examinations.

Exam Preparation Checklist

What are the days and dates of your exams?

What time are they and how long does each one last?

Where is each exam being held? Have you any clashes that need

sorting out? How will you get to each exam? Have you got a bottle of water? Have you got ordinary pens

(including a spare) different coloured pens and a highlighter pen, pencils, a sharpener and an eraser?

Have you got any specialist equipment you need?

Have you got a game plan of how long you will spend reading the paper, answering each question, and checking your answers?

Have you visualised yourself taking your first look at the exam paper, and calming yourself down as you look for the questions you will answer?

Have you seen yourself selecting a question and annotating it with a highlighter pen and different colours, to make sure you have read and understood every word?

Can you see yourself pausing, breathing deeply and calmly starting your plan?

Homework Help, Procrastination and the Middle Scholar How Much Help Should Parents Give? American researcher and educator, Michele A. Hernández, shares the same concerns about homework as many teachers and parents. Too many times parents actually do their children's homework for them. Although it sounds obvious, you will not help your Middle

Scholar in the long run if you do their homework for them. Your goal is to facilitate the completion of homework, never to complete it for them. The best ways you can help: Set up an environment conducive

to studying Have children review with you

what they have to do Make sure they have all reference

materials they need Make sure they eat some healthy

food so they have the brainpower to think

Show interest in what they are doing

What exactly is your role as a parent? Explain any material they are

having trouble with Review material for a test or help

them memorize something Give examples of problems so

that they can learn a methodology Suggest places to look up answers,

but do not do it for them Stress the relevance of what they

are learning to their everyday life

Study Strategies to Beat Procrastination Hernández also offers strategies for beating both the worst enemy of both intellectually gifted as well as academically challenged students: procrastination. Parents and teachers of Middle Scholars have to walk the fine line between nagging and enforcing the fact that assignments need to be completed ahead of time, not at the last minute. Hernández suggests two major ways you can modify your Middle Scholars’ behaviour. 1. By example. If your Middle Scholar sees that you are always putting off your own tasks, he will subconsciously copy your behaviour and

apply it to his schoolwork. 2. Using rewards or incentives. Rather than thinking punitively (i.e., you can't go see a movie until you're done with your math homework), think in terms of realistic rewards. Steer your child away from procrastination with the following techniques: Avoid nagging relentlessly Avoid adopting punitive strategies

(“If you don't finish, then you can't play video games”. à resentment and demotivation)

Offer positive rewards such as a game, favourite meal, or an

unscheduled break for outdoor activity.

Use weekends to get ahead on long-term or lengthy assignments

Try to break up the regular study routine in order to make the task seem less monotonous

World Record Attempt – Stand Up to Poverty Next Friday at 1.30pm students and staff will end Term Three and head home for a well-earned break. Moments before this however, students, staff, and hopefully a large number of parents, will have taken part in an incredibly important worldwide event, and helped to break a Guinness World Record for the most people to take part in a single event, by reading the annual Stand Up to Poverty pledge. Last year over 800 of our community read this pledge, calling on world leaders to do more to end poverty and to enact the 2000 Millenium Development Goals. Over the course of a single weekend in 2009, more than 173 million people read this same pledge worldwide, setting the previous world record, and sending an incredibly powerful message to leaders everywhere.

It is suggested that governments and businesses view acts of social activism as representing 100 like-minded individuals. Based on this statistic, some quick maths reveals that the people who took part in last year’s Stand Up event represent nearly double the Earth’s population. This year, it is hoped that more than 200 million people will Stand Up against poverty, sending the most powerful message yet of the urgency of ending extreme poverty. I honestly believe that taking part in this event is probably the easiest, and yet most powerful, thing and individual can do to end poverty. At the conclusion of our usual end-of-term liturgy next Friday, those within the Callan Centre will be invited to stand and read the Stand Up pledge. Those who chose to do so will be counted and this number will be included in the worldwide total to be presented to world leaders at the 2010

Millenium Development Goals Summit in New York. We would love it if as many parents and friends who are able to, come along to this liturgy (which will commence at 1pm) to be included in the final count. Next Sunday night (September 19th) at 4pm Channel 9 will also broadcast the documentary Seeds of Hope featuring Hugh Jackman investigating poverty in Ethiopia as part of the Stand Up weekend. More information about Stand Up can be found at http://standagainstpoverty.org/suap/ . In the theme of next week’s liturgy “we’re not looking for your money, we’re looking for your voice”. God bless

‘GROWING GORGEOUS BOYS INTO GOOD MEN.’

St Patrick’s College invites you to a talk by social commentator CELIA LASHLIE. Celia Lashlie, author of ‘He’ll Be Ok -Growing Gorgeous Young Boys Into Good Men’, will give a talk at St Patrick’s College on 26 October. With 15 years experience working in the prison services of New Zealand, Celia undertook the ‘GOOD MAN PROJECT’ with 25 boys schools throughout NZ- a project aimed at creating a working definition of what makes a good man in the 21st century. The result was a significant insight into the minds of teenage boys and what they are feeling in this period of their lives. Celia is an inspirational speaker and provides challenging suggestions and plenty of practical and reassuring advice for parents. You will be left with much food for thought on how to help your sons along the road to becoming good men. All parents will find something valuable in this talk regardless of whether you have sons or not.

Trivia Night Thanks

Sincere thanks from the Sport Support Group are offered to all who contributed to our successful and enjoyable Trivia Night last Saturday evening, 4 September, before, during and after the event. The final figures have not been collected but it appears to be approximately $8 000 net profit as well as a chance for new and past parents to meet and greet around 26 tables. Our guests of honour were Mr & Mrs Mitchell, parents of past student, Drew Mitchell who played his 50th match for Australia on Sunday morning scoring the vital try. The theme was footy jer-seys and all participated well with the prize being won by ‘Drew’s Crew’ because they were the best dressed and had the most colourful table decorations. Thanks to Gen Quenault for organising the questions and answers as well as the audio questions. Thanks to Woolworths, Petrie, for their tasty platters, and to all our sponsors, the list ap-pears below. Then, in conclusion, thanks to our generous sponsors, Executive, parents & ‘Old Boys’, patrons, volun-teers, the College for the Callan Centre and the Callan Centre cleaners.

Dear Parents

Australian Government assistance for National Capital excursion

Students from our school will soon be undertaking, or have recently undertaken, an educational tour of the national capital. While on this tour they participated in a variety of educational programmes focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist you in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program. Activities undertaken as part of the educational tour have been outlined in previous reports in the Calling. We hope that the excursion is a rewarding experience for all students. Yours sincerely Dr Michael Carroll College Principal
