Dear Members of the St Patrick’s College Community, Today I had the opportunity to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Queensland Under 15 Rugby Championships which St Patrick’s College are hosting at Curlew Park. This event is another in the suite of 60 Year Events the College is hosting. Curlew Park again looked in excellent condition and my thanks and congratulations go to the Curlew Park staff for their efforts in ensuring our fields are in such good order. My thanks are also extended to the staff, parents and students who are assisting with the Carnival this week. Games continue until Sunday and we can always use some extra volunteers with set up or at the canteen. Last Friday, our annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival was held at Curlew Park. The weather was very kind to us and a great day was had by all. Again my thanks to the staff and large band of parents who assisted throughout the day. I also wish to congratu-late the students on their involvement and spirit on the day. Well done to all. As well as being a fun day there was also a competi-tive aspect to the day and I congratulate Coffey House for winning the carnival. This weekend we continued the CIC sports competition against Gregory Terrace and we begin the AIC season against St Peters. I wish all players the best for the season and encourage all to play hard but always play within the spirit of the game. I wish to congratulate Harrison Galvin - Captain of Tennis and Ethan Fleming & Mitchell Cash - Captains of Basketball on their respective appointments. I am confident that these young men will lead their teams well and be excellent ambassadors for St Pat-rick’s College. Next week the College is hosting the EREA Board on Monday and Tuesday. I take this opportunity to welcome the members of the Board and I am sure that the St Patrick’s College Community will extend our usual friendly hospitality. Following the meeting, Dr Wayne Tinsey will attend the St Patrick’s College Board meeting on Wednesday 29 August to present the St Patrick’s College school renewal report. Once presented to the Board, Wayne will return to St Patrick’s College later in the year to formerly present the report to the College and endorse St Patrick’s College as a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice Tradition. Also next week Fr Liam will celebrate the Sacramental Mass for those young men who have been participating in the College’s sacramental program. Over 20 students, from all year levels, will receive the various sacraments. This is a special event in our Col-lege calendar and a wonderful celebration of the Faith Community of St Patrick’s College. Finally this week, I wish Tyler Samus, Samuel Nothard, Jacob Johannessen and Jeremy Gordon, who will depart Australia this week to travel either to Canada or USA as part of the College’s Exchange Program. I wish all boys safe travels and am confident that they will represent St Patrick’s College with distinction. Have a great week. God Bless

Pleasure & Happiness Pleasure and happiness. I had an interesting conversation last week regarding today’s society and the concepts of pleasure and happiness. Many activities we do are able to provide us with immediate pleasure in our lives. We constantly do things to give ourselves pleasure. But in life, do we find this brings real happiness. Does it bring us to be better people? It is a struggle I believe we as teachers and as parents struggle with daily with our young men. Today, more than ever, there is a need for instant gratification and recognition. Our young men are constantly seeking immediate pleasure and public acknowledgement. The question is are they better young men for it. Are they actually happier? The need for time on Face-book and other social media, going to the party on Saturday night that everyone else is going to, watching endless videos/TV programs, staying up late and texting friends at all hours of the night, playing computer games hours on end, all are ‘needed’ by our young men to make them feel good. But is this a fleeting emotion? Do they feel better during the following week. I believe as teachers, and as parents, it is our responsibility to provide opportunities and boundaries for our young men to provide them experiences that will make them happy in the long term and grow as young men. This sometimes requires tough love, setting clear boundaries with consequences that are enforced, and making strong statements about what we believe in. Big challenges, but with very rewarding outcomes.

Leadership Formation Opportunities The Leadership Formation Opportunities are an important component of the Year 11 program offered at St Patrick’s. Twenty Year 11 students will be travelling overseas this year, with the first leaving this Sunday. Jacob Johannssen and Tyler Samus travel to Archbishop Moeller High in Cincinnati USA, while Jeremy Gordan and Sam Nothard will be studying at Vancouver College in Canada for the next six weeks. We wish the boys all the best for this great opportunity and look for-ward to hearing of their experiences.

EREA Conference Last week I had the pleasure of attending the annual EREA Deputy Principal Conference in Melbourne. It was a productive three days with a visit to our fellow EREA school St Bernard’s in Essendon, plus sessions on education, legal, media and finan-cial aspects of our colleges.

A lot of very positive actions occur across our EREA colleges. We should be very proud of the work at St Patrick’s but also of the work being done across the EREA network.

The Inter-House Competition The Athletics Carnival last Friday was exceptionally well attend-ed and there was an excellent spirit of participation and com-petitiveness. Congratulations to Coffey House on winning the Athletics Carnival. Special thanks need to go to our Grounds Staff for a magnificent job of preparing Curlew Park for the car-nival. The Year level winners were:- Year 5 - Mooney; Year 6 -Treacy; Year 7— Quane; Year 8 – Kennedy; Year 9 – Coffey; Year 10- O’Rourke; Year 11- Treacy; Year 12 – Treacy. Overall Places were 1st – Coffey, 2nd- Quane/Rice 4th Kennedy, 5th – Treacy, and 6th –O’Rourke 7th Xavier, 8th Mooney 9th Ryan. Congratula-tions to Mr Copping and all the Coffey students and staff on a great performance. Mobile Phones I would like to remind parents of procedures regarding mobile phones at St Patrick’s. Students are allowed mobile phones as we understand the need for communication in many situations.

Students can place their phone in the Student Office for safe keeping during the day. Our policy is that if we see a phone during school hours we will take that phone. If there is any con-cern about the use of a phone we will check the contents of that phone. We encourage every student to use his phone ap-propriately or risk losing the privilege of having a mobile phone at school. Last Thursday night, I was talking to a bloke at the Paddies Van in the city – his name was Errol. Errol was maybe in his late fifties and carried four bags, one carrying a swag/sleeping bag. Our conversation went something like this: Errol: G’day mate. Just wanted to say thanks for the meal tonight – I really enjoyed it. Me: No worries at all. Did you like the chicken stir-fry and rice? Errol: Absolutely – it was lovely. Me: That’s great to hear – I’ll pass that on to the boys who made it. They’ll love to hear that. Errol: The boys made it? Fair dinkum? How old are they? When did they make it? Me: The boys are in Grade 11, so I guess they’re about 16. They make something every week and spend their Thursday lunchtime in the school kitchen making it. Errol: What, just for us? Are they here tonight? Me: Of course for you – I bet they don’t cook at home! No, the boys who cook often can’t come on Thursday nights – some of them have part-time jobs or footy training on Thursday nights, but they still want to make a contribution. Errol: Really good of ‘em. Compliments to the chef! Me: Where are you sleeping tonight, mate? Errol: I’ve been under a big fig tree on the grounds at QUT for the past 5-6 weeks or so I guess – came up from down south. It’s fine there – security look out for me, and there’s plenty of lights on around the place at night, so I feel fairly safe. Me: “Fairly safe”? Errol: Well, you know how it is. Me: Not really mate, no. Tell me a bit about how it is…..if you don’t mind. By the way, my name’s Matt. Errol: Errol. Nice to meet you, Matt. No, I don’t mind at all. I’ve been living on the street for over twenty years – not really embarassed about it anymore. I hardly remember any different to be honest. I travel around most of the time – stay in one place a couple of weeks or a couple of months, then head off and find somewhere where it’s warmer or cooler or has less mozzies. I’ve learnt though that some towns treat blokes like me better than others. That’s why Bris bane’s alright – no one hassles me too much. I still cop the odd bit of abuse from people, but I’ve got thick skin these days. I’ll head north in a week or two. That’s why I

really appreciate meals like this one tonight – it helps me save my money for the train fare. Matt: We’re happy we could help, Errol. All the best mate – maybe we’ll see you again next week. Errol: Maybe. Good night, Matt.

And with that, Errol walked off into the night, towards his fig tree at QUT. Maybe Errol will be at the Van tonight – maybe he won’t. That’s not the point really. As you read over this short conversation above, it is easy to form an opinion, or make a judgment on Errol. But that’s not the point either – not the point of the Paddies Van. We don’t go to judge; we just go to listen to, to talk with, to share a meal with, to be present for Errol and others like him. Beginning next week, the Paddies Van will be going into the City on Tuesday nights and Thursday nights. We are there-fore looking for more students, more staff, more old boys and more parents who might like to get involved every now and then. Last weekend many of the students and staff took part in the 40 Hour Famine. I did the 40 Hour Famine as well and chose to give up food for 40 hours, which before I did this I didn’t think it would be a hard task. The Friday night became a difficult experience as I sat at Suncorp Stadium to watch the mighty Brisbane Broncos. I had made sure that before 8pm (The famine starting time) I was well fed but as time drew out through what was a nail biting game I began to have some small cravings. It was here that I suddenly took the time to see the large abundance of food and drink being consumed all around me, the man behind me ate two hotdogs in one half of Rugby League. Saturday became much harder and it was made more difficult by the fact I realised I still had a day and a half ahead of me before I could eat again. During the day I did some chores around the house and even mowed the lawn and by about 4:00 in the afternoon I began to feel very tired and my stomach felt like it was being tied into knots. The evening was made harder by the fact I would have to watch the Wallabies without being able to eat chips and sip on a cold beer. It was here I realised that how as a society we associate food with so many of our rituals. When we watch a movie it’s often with Popcorn and soft drink, when we watch sport it’s with Pizza and a refreshing beverage. I had a very restless sleep feeling the knots in my stom-ach and never feeling quite satisfied. When 12:00 hit on Sunday the famine was finished and I very happily ate some Fish and Chips at the beach with my wife. I truly realised the irony of what I was doing here. The Famine is about raising money but it is also about being able to walk in someone else’s shoes. To feel how I felt being tired and having hunger pains all the time, is something that I could not even imagine. I was reminded of when I had visited East Timor two years ago and a family in one of the villages invited me into their home and gave me a bowl of rice. At the time the price of rice had increased and the families could not simply afford to buy large amounts of rice but this family still was able to share their food with someone who was a complete stranger to them. Things like the 40 Hour Famine always remind us of how lucky we are and what it is like to live in another’s shoes. To be truly Just people we must first experience what it is like for others to be able to walk in their shoes.

Year 8 Subject Selection Thanks to parents who attended the Year 8 subject selection meeting on Monday evening. The online subject selection portal is currently open and will remain so until Friday 7 September. Curriculum guides were given out to the boys on Monday. These guides contain relevant and detailed infor-mation regarding the make up of year 9 and 10 courses of study. Year 10 SET Plan Meetings Year 10 SET plan meetings are to be held in the library on Fri-day of this week. Appointment times have been emailed. Par-ents and boys should report straight to the library on Friday. There are no classes for Year 10 but students must wear full school uniform to the meetings. Year 12 QCS Year 12 students will complete the QCS test on Tuesday and Wednesday fortnight. All Year 12s are required at school on these days whether they are completing the test or not. The only exception to this are boys who will be attending Struc-ture d Workplace Learning. If students have missed any work placement days, it is permissible for them to contact their employer and organise a makeup day on either the Tuesday or Wednesday (4th and 5th September). Year 7-10 NetBooks Can I remind all parents and students in Years 7-10 about the importance of saving work from the netbooks/laptops onto their SD card. Boys have got into the habit of saving work on-to the computer itself. This will create problems if the ma-chine is put in for repair as the student will have no back up of the work. Saving to the SD card takes the worry out of boys not having their computer. They simply transfer the SD card into the hot spare they receive from IT. Once this is done the files can be retrieved and work can continue. In order to assist in the process, our IT technician has made a short video, showing how to save work to the SD card. This video has been placed onto the College website. I suggest all parents and students access this video.

School Based Apprenticeship Program Samuel John, Year 12 Ryan House Leader, is currently working for Aviation Welding Australia as a sheet metal fabricator specialising in Aviation Welding, a role which he worked hard to find himself and after approaching a number of employers and sitting through a number of interviews he was offered a role as a school based apprentice. Since pursuing his dream of work-ing in the aviation industry Samuel has been fortunate enough to work on a wide variety of aircraft, he says the best part about his apprenticeship is the wide va-riety of materials and welds he gets to work with, much bet-ter than spending his day working on the same machine completing the same weld. Recently Samuel was nominated for Queensland School based Apprentice of the year and was lucky enough to make it into the top 5 apprentices in the State. At the awards cere-mony on Friday night just past Samuel came very close to taking out the top prize but unfortunately just missed out to another finalist. Samuel says the best part about completing a School based Apprenticeship is that he is earning money doing something he enjoys and is reducing time from his trade studies along the way, as well as knowing that he has a full-time role to head into next year. I would like to congratulate Samuel on his outstanding achievements this year an I encourage him to continue striv-ing to meet his career goals.

Let’s Talk EREA – working in partnership with Indigenous Communities’ – an Immersion for EREA staff led by Cassie Gibbs a Gamilaraay woman and Julieanne Manson an Ara-bana woman, held from August 5 to August 11 2012. ‘Let’s Talk’ is based on the belief that all people have a vital role to play in the development of a civil society and gain a greater understanding of social justice, human rights, reconciliation and identity issues. ‘Let’s Talk’ began in Ireland, Northern Ireland and London in 1997 as part of the Irish Peace Process which allowed young people to talk to each other, people from different walks of life who talked and learned. ‘Let’s Talk Rural’ began in North West NSW as a consequence of the initial Irish experience and promotes furthering right relationships between Indigenous and Non Indigenous peoples. We visited the Myall Creek Massacre Memorial Site near Bingara. In 1838 twelve armed stockmen rode onto Henry Dangar’s property at Myall Creek and rounded up, like ani-mals, twenty eight friendly Aboriginal elderly men, women and children. These people were the relatives of the Aborigi-nal men working with the station manager. The armed stock-men dragged the Aborigines into the bush and slaughtered every last one. Their bodies were then burnt. Originally the 12 stockmen were released by the courts but were retried and subsequently hanged. 162 years after the Massacre a memori-al to the Wirrayaraay people was erected at the site. I have to say I’ve seen Flanders fields where the poppies still grow blood red; I’ve seen Guadalcanal where men died in battle but I’ve never been more moved than experiencing the eerie feel-ings I felt at hearing of this massacre. Colonialists have much to answer for. We moved on to Moree which has a long history also of un-rest and disadvantage. I also got angry at the system which allows huge multi national cotton farms get $35000 a bale for their cotton but put nothing back into the community. The primary school kids who want to raise money collect the cot-ton waste on the side of the road. This, in my opinion, is terri-ble. It’s good that the kids and community care enough to raise money but it really says huge amounts about the society we live in. In Walget I ran into a man I hadn’t seen for about 25 years when I worked on the Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and was pleased to see that the program is moving forward. Deaths in Custody are reduced and housing and quality of life is improv-ing. At Lightning Ridge Aunty Brenda took us to meet Rhonda who talked to us about the Indigenous student’s lack of op-portunity. Even when the students are educated in the city or to a high standard, their employment opportunities are lim-

ited – especially in western NSW. For me this opens up a huge and wonderful opportunity for all of us involved in Indigenous Education. Pathways, Post school effective pathways should always be our focus. We experienced a smoking ceremony here also. In Brewarrina our facilitator was Uncle Brad who tells the sto-ries of his forefathers who grew up in the Government run mission. Most people who lived under the harsh conditions have issues with authority and Governments and Uncle Brad is one of them. He explained to us that his life was really hard with every part of every day being overseen by a Government employee. It reminded me of the life people used to live on the Queensland missions. Something most of us will never experience thank God. In conclusion, it was an eye opening experience which took me right out of my comfort zone. In my opinion all EREA staff should have an opportunity to be involved in this

(Last Weekend of September/October Holidays)

This year’s St Patrick’s College Track and Field Camp will be two nights, three days on the Sunshine Coast from Friday 5 October to Sunday 7 October at Glendalough Outdoor Education, Peregian. Our athletes/your son will enjoy wonderful accommodation and training facilities as well as being able to experience training, coaching and tips from some of Queensland’s best athletes and coaches. This is an elite athletic venue and a great opportunity to be experienced by all that attend. The overall cost of the three (3) day camp will be approximately $140.00. For this price the athletes will receive:

Accommodation. Meals included (students will need to purchase lunch on Friday and Sunday) Educational sessions on self- massage, diet and recovery techniques. Guest Speaker (s) Recovery session(s).

This will be a great opportunity and we ask you allow your son to participate in this year’s Track and Field Camp.

SPC Basketball Uniform TRAINING Reminder that all boys are required to wear their college P.E. uniform or Basketball uniform at training (including sports socks), at no stage are boys allowed to wear other club singlet’s, NBA singlet’s, rugby jersey’s etc. If boys are found wearing the incorrect uniform they will be asked to sit out of training which may affect selection chances. If boys are continually found wearing the wrong uniform they may lose the opportunity to represent the college in basketball, I ask for all parents support with this matter.

GAMES By this stage all boys should have an SPC Basketball singlet for games. The first round of AIC competition is this Saturday (25 August); all boys must have a numbered singlet by this date. Boys are permitted to wear college P.E. shorts during games so long as all pockets have zips. SPC basketball shorts are available for purchase from the uniform shop if desired. SPECTATORS For all boys who wish to stay around and support after their respective game, full College formal uniform is to be worn, you will be not be permitted to stay unless you meet this requirement.

SPC TENNIS On Saturday 18th August the St Patrick’s College Tennis Championships took place for all ages at Club Coops, using eight

courts, organised by Br Chris Pritchard and Brad Harbottle, LifeTime Tennis. The day was a perfect spring morning with no

cloud cover and little wind. There had been a large number of participants and some 124 students had taken part. Many par-

ents and siblings were on hand to assist, encourage and console all players during the morning. The basic format for the day

was a set (first to 6 games) with a tie breaker if necessary (first to 7 points) while the Opens used the formula for 1st IV AIC Ten-

nis, best of two sets. All the earlier rounds to the semis had been played in the three weeks prior to the ‘Finals Day.’

Congratulations to all competitors and the eventual College Champions, 2012. The Finals results were:

Interhouse Debating After three rounds featuring more than 40 debates our Interhouse Debating Competition for 2012 culminated in the final series staged this morning. The entire College student body and teaching staff watched eight very competitive and lively debates which determined the final standings for all houses this year. Debating News Last night our Firsts tried to achieve what no debating team has achieved before them…a win in the semi-finals of the QDU competition to see them move into the grand-final. Sadly, whilst our young men spoke with eloquence and determination, it was not to be, narrowly going down to Brisbane Girls Grammar. A tough short preparation topic for our team – ‘That we should ban the digital enhancement of all people in advertising and magazines’, though Angus Lane, Duncan Moir and Joshua Smith certainly rose to the challenge with some compelling argument. Ultimate wingman Lachlan Marsh proved as crucial as ever in helping the boys formulate their attack. This year our Firsts have deserved their status as one of the top 4 in Queensland for Year 12 debating. Together with Tom Huth, the boys have faced incredibly tough competition and they have never disappointed in their debating prowess. A special thank you to the large contingent of supporters who turned out to help our young men fight the good fight. A significant number of parents and siblings regularly attend these debates, but College Captain Ricardo Thomas took it upon himself to organise a massive group of

student supporters for their final’s campaign. We’ve no doubt that the Girls Grammar ladies would have felt somewhat intimidated by the sea of young men proudly sporting their green and gold. Thank you to Br Chris Pritchard for ferrying the supporters out on yet another late Wednesday evening. Whilst we bid farewell to our seniors, our Year 7 QDU team have only just begun their debut season in the competition. We’ve no doubt that they are our stars of the future and they are certainly off to a flying start. The boys arrived for their first debate with nerves of steel. The team of debaters, Adam Aquilini, Joe Grew and Max Marson argued strongly against St Paul’s. They all did a fantastic job and have walked away with a victory. That’s 1 from 1! Well done gentlemen! They continue their march to glory on 5 September at 7.00pm at St Paul’s. Get along and be part of the debating 2012 excitement.

St Patrick’s College Sport

CURLEW PARK ASSOCIATION Curlew Park is a valuable facility that benefits so many in the St Patrick’s community. The College has a lease arrange-ment with the City Council for Curlew Park and it is administered by the Curlew Park Association. This Association meets once a month on a Wednesday and is in need for a volunteer to fill the role of Secretary. The Executive is an essential group for the College to maintain the lease arrangement with the City Council and continue the outstanding development of the community grounds. If you are interested in volunteering for the Association please contact the Main Office.
