Mrs Stacey Bishop Foundation

What a fantastic day was had by those guests who attended the St Patrick’s College Marquee at the Deagon Race Day on Sunday! The atmosphere in our marquee was amazing and from all reports the day was a great success. St Patrick’s College has a proud history in the local community so it seemed fitting that we should support this momentous occasion. Special thanks must go to our major supporters. Coffee Club was an integral part of the day sponsoring our marquee, while Wired Orthodontics, Dickies First National, Rhino Finance, Sarah Cleeland Family Lawyers, Sandgate Physical Health Clinic, Tox Free and Act Now Energy Solutions were instrumental in supporting the St Patrick’s College Jim Douglas Class 3 Plate. Thank you also to our wonderful MC Bart Sinclair. I think our guests would agree that Bart’s racing expertise certainly added to the atmosphere of the day. As this was the first time we have held an event of this nature we are aware of a few teething problems but we would be keen to hear your feedback so we can ensure any future events are even more enjoyable. Proceeds from the day will support the St Patrick’s College Foundation and in particular the Edmund Rice Bursary. The Edmund Rice Bursary will be offered for the first time in 2014 to a new student, who due to financial hardship and family circumstances otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend the College.

For those who missed out on the fun at this year’s event, word around the track is that the Deagon Community Race Day will be an annual event. See you at the races in 2014.

As another busy term comes to an end, the P&F wish to thank all those who take the time to attend the monthly meetings and volunteer their time to assist where needed. One of the main objectives of the P&F is to work with the College to achieve our common goals. In 2013 to date, we have been able to contribute in various ways, providing both our services and funding. Fundraising activities have included manning a stall at the Bluewater Festival, running the Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls and selling the Entertainment Books. The P&F were then in the fortunate position to contribute the towards funding the 2013 Parent Education evenings: Brett Lee ‘Internet Safety and Cyber bullying’, Dr Paul Gibney ‘The Role of Fathers in Their Son’s Lives’ and Dr Ian Lillicoe ‘Boys and their Schooling’. These events were well attended by the College community and the topics were well received. We were also able to contribute $500 towards the Paddies Garden and provide Student Folios to all new Year 5 2014 students. Other ways in which we have been able to serve are to fund

and man the College’s Open Day Barbeque (cooking over 2,000 sausages!!!) and volunteering our time to assist with the Tuesday Night Paddies Van. We are also planning to be at the upcoming Orientation Evening on 14 October to welcome new families to the College. For our final fundraiser for the year we are again holding the P&F Jazz & Shiraz afternoon in the Waterford Building on Sunday 20 October. This event was last held in 2011 and was a huge success with a capacity crowd. It’s a great opportunity for the College community to get together in a relaxed and friendly way as the year draws to a close. We encourage you to be quick to book your tickets (only $10-00), which will be on sale early in Term 4.

This Saturday 21 September is the International Day of Peace, declared by the United Nations for the first time in 2002. At this time in our world, with a particular focus on the recent atrocities in Syria, it seems that a focus on peace is as important as ever. This year, the theme for “Peace One Day” is: “Who will you make peace with?”, challenging us to not just look at the concept of peace on the world stage, but also in our daily lives. At tomorrow’s end of term liturgy at 12.45pm in the Callan Centre, to which all are invited, we will look at this in more detail. We will also celebrate the fact that we have now been an accredited Global Peace School for one year. Mrs Theresa Kellett from Save the Children Australia will be in attendance at our liturgy to congratulate us on our progress as a Peace School and to present the inaugural “St Patrick’s College Save the Children Peace Award”. If you would like to know more about Peace One Day, have a look at their website and participate in the day of online activities and concerts throughout Saturday: www.peaceoneday.org. Each day of her adult life, Mother Teresa of Calcutta prayed this prayer, attributed to St Francis of Assisi, after whom our new Pope is named:

Lord, make me a channel of your peace,

That where there is hatred, I may bring love; where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;

where there is discord, I may bring harmony; where there is error, I may bring truth; where there is doubt, I may bring faith;

where there is despair, I may bring hope; where there are shadows, I may bring light;

where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted; to understand rather than to be understood;

to love rather than to be loved; for it is by forgetting self that one finds,

it is by forgiving that one is forgiven, it is by dying that one awakens to eternal life.

Have a great, relaxing and peaceful holiday.

Congratulations to all students on the extremely responsible and focused way in which they undertook examinations over the last two weeks. It was a little concerning that a number of boys were absent from exams due to family holiday arrangements. It is important to note that at St Patrick’s College, assessment will always take place in the final week of any term. As per College policy, students who miss an assessment task are required to complete the piece of work on the day of their return. Boys from Year 5 -11 are all part of the College’s 1 to 1 laptop program. As indicated in the IT Acceptable Use Policy, the laptop remains the property of the College though students are required to maintain the device in good condition. The majority of boys are excellent in their handling of the laptops. However from time to time, wear and tear will occur. At the end of Term 4 boys will be required to return their laptop. At that stage it is probably too late to alert the IT department of any damage. The turn around time for repairs can be slow, which could result in the computer not being available at the beginning of next year. Could I ask that if there is any damage at all to your son’s computer that he takes it to IT support as soon as possible, rather than wait until the end of Term 4.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

WANTED Rice House supports Indigenous communities in North Queensland with sporting equipment. In 2011, Rice House men collected football boots and sent them to very grateful students in Normanton. We have just found out that the Yarrabah community (an hour outside Cairns) are short of some vital sports supplies, so Rice House is calling for donations of the following: Rugby League balls Netballs (size 5) Skipping ropes Tennis balls Cricket equipment

The school and community would also really appreciate any donations of: Used football boots Used sports shoes (including

girls) Sports socks

Please pass donations on to Mr Walker and we will endeavor to get these to Cairns at the start of Term 4. The children of Yarrabah would very much appreciate all donations.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish all members of the St Patrick’s community all the best for the upcoming Spring break and hope that it is both restful and energizing. Congratulations to the Year 12 students and all students for a positive Term. It certainly has been a long but positive term. Enjoy the break – it is well deserved.

I would like to raise some important information regarding hair/grooming and uniform before the commencement of Term 4.

EXIT PROCEDURES FOR YEARS 8, 9 AND 10 All students in Years 8, 9 and 10 will be required to complete a form before they exit from Term 3. The form has been included in the Student Diary on Page 120 and 121. It will be required to be signed off by various staff members and parents laptops by their teachers, Library books by Library Staff, Lockers and Locks, by House Deans, assessment by Mr Campbell and incomplete duties/detentions by Mr Torrisi. The form has been developed to make students accountable and serves as a check that your son has completed all his duties at school. Students who do not complete this form will be required to attend school until 3.00pm on the final day of school.

HAIR The Hair and Grooming Policy is located on page 21 and 22 of the Student Diary with the underlying principle “St Patrick’s College requires students in order to maintain a high

standard of dress and grooming so as to present an appropriate image of the College to the broader community and to each other, it is an expectation that hair be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, ears and eyebrows at all times”. I ask that all boys make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of Term 4. If you are going on holidays please make sure your son has a haircut before he returns. If his hair does not meet College Guidelines he may be sent home and then be required to attend Saturday detention to make up the time missed. Please assist us in maintaining the high standards of both Uniform and Grooming. TERM 4 UNIFORM Term 4 commences on Tuesday, 8 October, for all students. All students are to wear the school summer uniform during Term 4. However Year 11 and 12 students must continue to wear the College Ties. Please ensure your son wearing his complete uniform for the first day of Term 4.

LOST PROPERTY At the end of the term any lost property that is not claimed and not named will be either returned to the Uniform Shop to be resold or will be given to St Vincent de Paul. We have a lot of unnamed clothing in lost property. Please ensure that all clothing is labelled in a number of places in permanent marker pen.

Mr Luke Donatini Director Of Sport

As we enter into the holiday break before the start of Term 4, it is a good time to remind all students involved in AIC Basketball, Tennis and Track & Field to stay focused over the holiday break and try to maintain some level of training and fitness. Round 5 for Basketball and Tennis is Saturday 12 October and it is important that we finish the ‘back half of the season’ as well as we started the season. There will be some degree of holiday training taking place over the break, so we encourage any student involved in Trimester 3 sport who is able to attend these sessions to please do so. Many thanks to all the students in Year 5, Year 6 and Year 7 who participated in Basketball, Tennis and/or Track & Field this year. We do hope that the 2013 season for those students involved was rewarding and enjoyable and we now look towards building on this season for 2014. Thank you to all the parents and coaches who have given up their time to assist with the above mentioned sports. Your contribution has been crucial to the overall success of this year’s junior sporting program. At the completion of the 2013 CIC Track & Field Championships, St Patrick’s College placed 7th overall. The athletes who represented our College performed to the best of their ability with many of them achieving personal best efforts on the day. They can be very proud of what they have

achieved this year. Ms Marthy Watson Hockey

Over the last 11 weeks our hockey team has played in the BHA Metropolitan School Boys Cup. They have lost one match during the season and played BBC in the semi-finals, defeating them 4-1. They faced an unbeaten St Edmund’s College team in the finals last Friday. It was a nail biting game and the score was locked at 1 – 1 at full time. They went into drop off and 1 minute before the end of the second drop off Eddies got a short corner and scored, clenching victory. Our boys played exceptionally well and captain Alex Bhugon lead the team from the front. Excellent goal keeping from Xander Gwyn-Jones and strong running by David Stokes, Evan Warland and Christian Ramsay. Thank you to all the supporters who came down on a Friday afternoon to watch the games. The game and interviews will be broadcast on Thursday night on Hockey Zone TV4 (digital

channel 44). All results and photos are on the BHA website: http://www.bha.org.au/13/pages/competitions/schoolboys-cup.php If you do miss the show on 4ME there will be a chance to watch the episodes online. Visit the Hockey Zone TV Website where you'll find links to YouTube. Select the segment that you want to watch to enjoy at your leisure.

Congratulations to Christian Ramsay who made the U/18 Men’s Queensland team. The team will be touring New Zealand for two weeks during the holidays. Owen Smith made the U13 Queensland State team. He will be participating in Melbourne from the 28 September - 5 October in the National championships.

AIC BASKETBALL As there are still three crucial rounds of AIC Basketball to go after the break it is essential all students involved continue to practice and refine their individual skills. A large degree of basketball skill development can be completed as an individual; I would encourage all students to speak to their respective coaches for skills to work on during the break. Below is the holiday training schedule, it would be beneficial for students to attend these sessions over the holidays where possible.
