From a school prospective , we are also fortunate to have such a special environment, both physically and pastorally. The College campus has continued to evolve in recent years and construction of the Sporting and Cultural Precinct is due to commence towards the end of July. However, our greatest strength is the community and the people who form this community. As I walked around Curlew Park last Saturday, it was wonderful to see the young men of St. Patrick’s College playing hard but fair, supporting each other and acknowledging good play by the opposition. It is important that all of us continue to foster that strong sense of community. At this time of year illness starts to take its toll. There are a number of staff and students unwell at the moment. It is also ‘assessment season’. Assignments and examinations are mounting up at the moment and the end of term examinations are only a week or so away. It is imperative that all students are organised and devoting time to study and assignments. I remind parents that all of the assessment calendars are available online, so you are able to monitor what work your son currently has due. Examination block for the Year 11 and 12 students will commence on Monday, June 16, and finish on Friday, 20 June. This coming weekend will be the final home game for the AIC Rugby and Soccer seasons. For the Year 12 students it will be the last time they run onto Curlew Park. This will be significant for them so I encourage families to be at Curlew Park this Saturday to acknowledge what these students have given to the College. I would also like to thank the large numbers of parents who have assisted throughout the season. In particular I wish to thank the Sports Support Group for their efforts. The sense of community for both the St. Patrick’s College families and the visiting families is something that is noted by people and I thank all who have been involved. Finally this week, congratulations to all those involved in the CIC Cross Country season. Our runners performed very well on Wednesday and were placed 7th in the CIC Cross Country Championships. My thanks go to all the coaches and parents who assisted during the season. Well done! Have a great week. Moji is a 19 year old Iranian asylum seeker, currently living in Brisbane. His journey from Iran, via Indonesia and Christmas Island, is a story of danger, sadness, fear and exclusion. When Moji shared his story at our recent ERA for Change gathering though, perhaps the most powerful aspect of his story was a very simple story of welcome. Because of current government policy, Moji is unable to be educated in a government school. The Red Cross approached St James’ College, a fellow EREA school, and when Moji arrived at the door of Mr Crooks, the Principal, he was immediately warmly welcomed into the St James’ community. He was a stranger, but was welcome. When Moji told this simple story, he was still obviously very moved by that welcome. Sometimes, we can underestimate the power of a simple message – in this case, welcome. This Friday evening, we have the opportunity to say this simple message in our Brisbane context. On Friday 6 June, Queensland Day, there is a “Lantern Parade” organised by the Multicultural Development Association, a show of solidarity and a simple way of saying welcome to our newest Australians. ERA for Change, our Edmund Rice student advocacy network will have a banner and a group of students, staff and parents participating. There will be students from St. Patrick’s, Nudgee, Gregory Terrace, St Laurence’s, St James’, St Edmund’s, along with Christian Brothers and members of the wider Edmund Rice network, walking behind the ERA for Change banner. There will hundreds of other people saying welcome to refugees as well. It is a very simple, but very powerful message. Hopefully, many other refugees and asylum seekers will have a moment like Moji had at St James’, and hear a three word slogan other than “Stop the Boats” – instead, perhaps they will hear: “You are welcome”.

It has been yet another busy week, and as the end of Semester One approaches, exams and assessment are due, so I encourage all students to continue working hard as your results are an indication of your effort. On another note, the Football and Rugby season has nearly come to a close and it is your last chance to

EDMUND RICE ADVOCACY QUEENSLAND (ERAQ)
The Christian Brothers in recent years, through our experience of working with marginalized peoples in Indigenous Australian communities, East Timor, PNG, the Philippines and Africa have been focusing on human rights and advocacy. Advocacy is now a key focus in all Edmund Rice schools and ministries and critical to promoting the values of the Edmund Rice Charism - Presence, Liberation and Compassion.
Currently we are inviting men and women: Past Students /Old Boys of Christian Brothers, parents of students in EREA schools and those have experience in social justice and promoting human rights to be part of a new group: (ERAQ) Edmund Rice Advocacy Queensland. We are especially looking for lawyers
who might be able to assist, either through pro bono work, or by advising on submissions on rights violations.
The group will also include people from other professions who have expertise in advocacy and will focus on the rights of: Refugees, Indigenous and Youth. For obvious reasons it would not be appropriate for people who are heavily involved with a political party to take part. If you are interested and would like to be part of this group, in some capacity, the first meeting is on:

My name is Johannes and last term I was fortunate enough to have been selected as an additional House Leader for Coffey House. This position is something that I am truly grateful for, as it has been one of my long term aspirations during my time here at St. Pat’s.
I feel happy to share this appointment with Jacob, who has already proven to be a great House Leader, and I am thankful to the existing leaders, Ben and Jack, for welcoming Jacob and me as co-leaders. I am excited to take on this challenge and
will commit to supporting the staff and students of Coffey House to achieve their best.

YEAR 7 CAMP Next week all Year 7 students will participate in their annual camp. Students will be required to be at school at the normal time and assemble in the plaza area. We encourage students to place all their gear in a duffel bag or sports bag. Parents need to clearly label all clothing and equipment. Electronic devices and lollies are not permitted on camp. YEAR 11 AND 12 STUDENTS SEMESTER EXIT PROCEDURE On Friday 13 June students in Years 11 and 12 will be involved in an end of Semester exit process. The process will involve students being signed off by the academic and pastoral areas of the College. Year 12 students will meet with their House Deans during Period 5 and once they have been processed they are able to leave school to commence their block exams. Year 11 students will follow the same process during period 7. If a student has not fulfilled his academic or pastoral commitments he will be required to stay at school until all those commitment have been fulfilled during exam block. All students must have their parents/guardians sign the forms.
BLOCK EXAMS All students in years 11 and 12 receive block exam privileges. Students in these year levels only come to school when they have exams. While at home it is important to utilise this time productively for exam preparation. When attending school for exams it is important that student do not leave the grounds of the College for any reason. Ipods and mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds. WHOOPING COUGH We have been advised that one of our Year 7 students has been diagnosed with Whooping Cough. Each year in August, students in Years 8 and 10, along with their parents commence a subject selection process for the following year. Heads of Curriculum address the students, an information evening is held and in the case of Year 10 , a SET planning day takes place where parents, students and a mentor go through subject choices for Year 11. Generally, I would not make reference to the process until Semester 2. This year however, I feel it is appropriate to commence providing information as there will be a number of changes in 2015. The most significant adjustment will be the reduction in the number of subjects that Year 11 students will be required to study. For many years, boys have been asked to select 7 subjects, one of which must be either Religion and Ethics or Study of Religion. From 2015, Year 11s will need to choose 6 subjects. The prerequisite that one of these will need to be Religion and Ethics or Study of Religion will remain. This will have a number of implications. Currently a Year 11 student will spend 8 lessons per fortnight on a subject. Under the new system, they will spend 9. It is envisaged that increased teaching time, combined with a reduced assessment load, the result of one less subject, will allow for a stronger academic performance.
The second change for Year 11 involves the introduction of three Certificate III courses. A Certificate III course is a TAFE linked course and provides an option for students not wishing to pursue the tertiary entrance (OP) or vocational education (work placement) pathway. The certificate will be offered in the areas of Business, Fitness and Information Technology. In recent years many boys have followed the OP pathway but despite their hard work have received an OP of 16-25. This represents the lower end of the OP scale. The advantage of completing a Certificate III is that upon application to QTAC at the end of Year 12, a non OP student may be assigned a ranking which can be amended to an OP 15. Hence, such a student would be eligible to either apply for a university course or use the Certificate III to continue his studies at a TAFE college. I think this is a particularly viable option to consider for boys not interested in following the work placement pathway and who are not really sure if they wish to attend a university. I will provide more information in the coming weeks. In next week’s Calling I will write about some of the changes for the Year 9 and 10 electives.

Yesterday a selected group of young men from Ms Bone’s Year 8 English classes visited the Lodges on George aged care facility to share their performance poetry. The boys stood up and performed their poetry in front of a captivated audience as entertainment before the resident’s lunch. After this all our boys were invited to sit with some of the residents for lunch. Three of our young men sat and ate lunch with a man named Peter Allen who kept the boys entertained with different stories about his life. All of the residents were delighted to have the boys sit at their table and share a lunch and conversation with them.
Our Men of Action showed great maturity ,holding conversations with many of the residents and entertaining them with their poetry and stories from their life at St. Patrick’s. A big congratulations to Lachlan Cook, Lachlan Cooney, Tasman Lawrence, Murdoch Hogan, Owen Buckland, Cody Atkinson, Connor Scurr, Edward Boland and Jack Essex for the fine performance of their poetry and the way they carried themselves as fine young gentlemen. A special thank you to Miss Bone for preparing the boys and to Brother Chris for joining us.

CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC On Tuesday we were treated to a fantastic performance of the Rocky theme by our College Music staff and friends. In light of our upcoming 'Music Intensive Day Camp', this was a demonstration of what we'll be doing at the camp. INTER-HOUSE DEBATING The semi finals held this morning were fiercely contested with the junior placing’s going to Quane, O’Rourke and Xavier. The senior victors were Quane, Ryan and Treacy.
Round 6 of Football and Rugby sees St. Patrick’s College verse St Peter’s Lutheran College in AIC and St Peter’s Lutheran College/Moreton Bay Boy’s College in CIC . We are at Curlew Park this Saturday for all AIC games and away for all our CIC games. This Saturday will be our last ‘home’ game for AIC Rugby and Football for 2014. As this may, for many, be the last opportunity for our Year 12 students to pull on the ‘green and gold’ for St. Patrick’s College and run out on the fields of Curlew Park, Saturday will be a very special moment for these students. It would be terrific to have great support from our College community to share this special occasion. We ask that all students arrive at the venue at least 45 minutes before the start of their game and that any student who comes along to support or stays behind after their game is dressed in their College’s formal uniform. CONGRATULATIONS: Benjamin Gould (Year 9) Ben represented Australia, playing Table Tennis, at the recent Oceania Cadet Challenge and the Cook Island World Circuit, which took place in Raratonga Island in Tonga from 20 - 31 May. Ben played through to the quarter finals in the Cook Island world circuit. In the Oceania Cadet Challenge Ben achieved second place which has qualified him to go to Barbados in Term 4 to compete in the World Cadet Challenge.
