WHY IS IT OUR PROBLEM?

When it comes to many issues of social justice, this is a common question. “Why is this our problem? It’s not our fault that… Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have more health problems than us. It’s not our fault these other countries can’t get themselves sorted – why should we have to take all of these asylum seekers? I’ll be dead by the time this climate change thing really causes damage – they’ll sort it out then. Not my problem.” Last week, I heard a student ask this question: Why is it our problem? The question, a completely fair one, was asked during a guest speaker presentation. The guest was Ms Jessie Taylor, a Melbourne barrister and refugee advocate, and maker of the documentary film, “Between the Devil and Deep Blue Sea”, a film which attempts to answer the question, “What turns a person into a boat person?” So, why are asylum seekers our problem? Why should we have the responsibility to welcome them and care for them? Our political leaders at present seem to be of the belief that in fact, the “problem” would be better handled elsewhere, places like Nauru and Papua New Guinea. Perhaps it is their problem? I would like to try to answer the question: Why is this our problem? I believe the issue of asylum seekers is indeed our problem, simply because Jesus of Nazareth and Edmund Rice are our guides. If we are genuine in our desire to be an authentic Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, we are obliged to follow the example of Jesus and Edmund. We can only make an assumption as to how they might have responded to asylum seekers in 2013 based upon what we know they did in their own time and context. -

Jesus made a point of welcoming the stranger – in fact in Matthew 25, Jesus tells us that whenever we welcome the stranger, feed the hungry, or do anything to assist the weakest, it is as important as if we are doing that for him. Edmund responded to the needs of the poorest in his community by seeking them out, and providing education, clothing and food. Jesus and Edmund gave people a hand up, not just a hand out. They did what they could to get people back on their feet, and made sure they felt like human beings. They treated people with dignity. In fact, following the lead of Jesus, Edmund made a point of doing something quite counter-cultural in 19th century Ireland. He referred to students by their first names and shook their hands. He gave them dignity by respecting and valuing who they were. Based on this, it is hard believe that Jesus or Edmund would refer to asylum seekers as “illegals”, particularly when they are actually doing nothing illegal by seeking asylum. We are called by our Catholic faith to be compassionate and empathetic, and we are inspired by the Christian Brothers to do something to show our compassion and empathy – that’s what the Brothers have always done – used their hands, feet, minds and hearts to do the work of Jesus. So, why is this our problem? Because we are no better, no more important, no more valuable, no more worthy than any of these people travelling to our country by boat, looking for safety. So, why is this our problem? Because we are a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition – that is who we are, and it is what we do… Or perhaps, our nation is looking at this issue the wrong way. Perhaps, this is not a problem to be solved, but rather an opportunity for our great nation. Maybe we, particularly our young people, have an opportunity to define our future by love and compassion, and not fear and rejection.

BRISBANE CATHOLIC EDUCATION INDIGENOUS GRADUATION LITURGY Our Year 12 Indigenous students had the pleasure of attending the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Graduation

Liturgy for all BCE students at the Cathedral of St Stephen’s. Sandy, Alroy Ryan and Jordan were very proud representatives of the College as well as proud participants in this very special ceremony.

In the final week of term it will be necessary to collect laptops back from students. Over the holiday break the computers will be re-imaged and in some cases have new software installed. As well as this, it will be necessary to check machines for any damage. The College understands that over the course of a school year, the laptop will experience a certain level of wear and tear. Nevertheless , it is important that any damage even if quite minor, is rectified as early as possible. As a consequence, I have a request. If there is any damage to your son’s laptop, even if relatively minor, could it be brought to IT Support straight away. This damage might include miss-ing screws, a loose letter on a keyboard, a slight crack in the casing which has resulted in wires being exposed. Obviously any major problems such as a cracked screen, should be taken immediately to IT Support. If the computers begin coming in now, then they can be re-paired quickly and returned. If we wait until the collection day in the final week, then the number of jobs could mean that the device is not repaired over the holidays and may not be returned until Week 2 or 3 next year. This would be a less than

ideal way to commence the academic year. Your co-operation regarding the laptops would be most wel-come.

A reminder to all boys to check Assessment Calendars. Final assessment is due very soon.

A reminder all Year 7, 8, 10 and 11 2014 students must purchase a St Patrick’s College Laptop bag from our Uni-form Shop to help protect the laptops. The bags are optional for Year 9and 12 2014 students but highly rec-ommended. Families can also have their son’s name embroidered on the bag to assist with easy identification. Further details and order forms are available from the Uniform Shop.

Stationary lists for 2014 are now available on Connect. Families can log onto Parent Portal via the College website, and then click on the ‘Teaching and Learning’ tab.

SHOWCASE Our Inter-House competition culminates this evening with Showcase. It should be a great spectacle with over 1200 students on stage during the night. Please ensure your son knows when and where he is to meet his House Dean and what time his House is performing. We have asked the students to ensure they do not move around the school on the evening but are always with their parents, their House or performing on stage.

HELP NEEDED The Year 12 Graduation Mass and Dinner will be held on Thursday, 14 November. We are asking present Year 11 parents and students to assist on the evening with the serving of food and drinks. Next year you will be the special guests and be waited upon. If you can assist during the evening please contact Mrs. Sandra Fowlie in the Student Office.

YEAR 5 CAMP 2013 Reflection by Jacob Larsen On Monday14 of October for the first time St Patrick’s year 5 classes Mrs Purcell and Mr Clark set off to go on a camp Apex, Mudjimba. We did a lot of activities across the days. Every boy in both classes were very excited and raced into the camp. We were then split into 4 groups. We called our group SOS which stands for ‘Soldiers of Shorncliffe. In my group we did two very brain-working activities, ‘Initiatives’ and ‘Bush skills’. I found them both challenging, fun and with lots of teamwork needed. I liked ‘Bush skills’ because you could make tents, huts. The Initiatives (team building skills) were really hard, you needed lots of brain-power to do this activity. It was extremely challenging for all. First was the assault course; where we got to get muddy, next completing the rock-climbing wall. After lunch my group went canoeing and I had to lead the way through the water, under bridges while over water-animals at the bottom of the river. Then we got drip-dried while walking over to archery with a firering bow and flying arrow across the grass to hit the target. My favourite activity was hard to choose but would have been canoeing and archery. I would give all the activities 10 out of 10. The last day Wednesday was great going to the beach and going for a spectacular surf which overall was my favourite activity. After a wildlife bushwalk through the forest we got to go surfing and play on the beach. Surfing was both a challenge but so fun. I would love to go again. I’d like to say on behalf of St Patrick’s students in Year 5, thank you to all the teachers and helpers giving up their family time to come and make the camp such a wonderful time. I’d like to thank the school for organising the spectacular camp and would recommend everyone to go.

Reflection by Nick Weir On Monday the 14th of October, Year 5 went on camp at Mudjimba Apex Camp. All students were excited and very happy on the way to camp. Every group had to have a team name. Our group name was Swagger Monkeys. The activities we did on Monday were archery and canoeing. My favourite was canoeing because it was a lot of excitement and fun. Before we got in the canoes we saw a sting ray. When I and my canoe partner Jericho got into the canoe we kept jamming into the rocks and branches. We had to go under the tunnels to get in the open water. While we were under the tunnel Jericho and I nearly capsized. We got to play canoe tag and running across the canoes. We also had a big water fight with the instructors and teachers. On Tuesday the activities my group did were bush skills, climbing wall and the assault course. I really enjoyed the bush skills because I am an outside person and I love building shelters and little huts. I loved building the shelters by ourselves because I’ve never had an opportunity to do something like that before. You really have to communicate and work together. On the last day we went surfing. I absolutely loved surfing out of all of the activities we did over the 3 days. I really adored surfing in the massive waves because I have never done surfing in my life before so for me it was an adventure. I also got up on the board every time and rode the waves all the way in to the sand. We also did a theory lesson on how things happen on the beach, we went on indo boards, played flags and a relay in the water. I really liked the flags because to me it was a challenge to run on the sand and dive for the flag. The only bad thing was when you dived in the sand you would get a mouth full of sand. I would like to thank the Edmund Park Camp Instructors and all of the teachers for looking after us. It wouldn’t have been as much fun if you all weren’t there. Thank you

On Friday 18 October and Tuesday 22 October St Patrick’s College Track & Field Team competed at the annual AIC Track & Field Championships held at the State Athletics Centre, Nathan. After a very strong start to the day on Tuesday we were able to consolidate our performance from Friday evening and gain 3rd place for a large percentage of the carnival. Unfortunately, with several below expected performances we couldn’t manage to maintain our 3rd place position and we slipped back into 4th and then finished the championships in 5th place overall (only 2 points behind Padua College who claimed 4th). For those athletes who trained consistently and put in the hard work and preparation, this year’s Track & Field season proved to be very rewarding and their performances were a reflection of their commitment (We will recognise these athletes in next week’s Calling when all official individual results and performances are received). We would like to thank all those involved in this year’s track & field program. Thank you to the athletes and their parents for their time and support throughout this season of athletics. Especially we would like to acknowledge the following coaches for their time, enthusiasm and dedication in preparing our athletes for this year’s AIC track & field season: Mr Ryan Schultz (Coordinator & Running Coach) Mrs Kate Colahan (Throws & High Jump Coach) Mr Blair Drabble (Middle Distance Coach) Mr Luke Oxford (Sprints & Relays Coach) Mr Jesse D’Amico (Long Jump & Triple Jump Coach) Mr Phil Webb (Throws Coach) Mr Garth Cooper (Throws Coach) The overall places for the 2013 AIC Track & Field Championships were: 1st – SEC, 2nd – IONA, 3rd – MCA, 4th – PAD, 5th – SPC, 6th – SLC, 7th – VILL, 8th – SPLC. THANK YOU TO OUR SPC CANTEEN HELPERS Throughout the course of the 2013 St Patrick’s College sporting year we have had many dedicated parents (mostly those associated with the Sports Support Group) assist with the running of the canteen at Curlew Park and the Callan Centre. To all these parents (and you all know who you are), we wish to thank you for your generosity and time given to ensure that a valuable service is provided at each and every College ‘home’ game. Most recently we have had (in particular) three very dedicated parents who have given up many hours to run and operate the Callan Centre Canteen during our 2013 Basketball season. We would like to especially acknowledge the hard work of Mr Ian Johannessen, Mrs Kerry Johannessen and Mrs Amanda Stringfellow for what they have contributed to sport by giving up their time to look after the Callan Centre Canteen.

It would be extremely pleasing if more St Patrick’s College parents were prepared to assist with both the Curlew Park Canteen and the Callan Centre Canteen whilst their son/s are involved in our College’s sporting program. These canteens offer a great service to the whole of our College’s sporting community and provide important funds to our sporting program. We hope that our parental community now have seen what the Sports Support Group (and those who are involved in it) have provided in 2013 and have also witnesed how hard a select few have worked to provide a great service at ‘home games’ at both Curlew Park and at the Callan Centre. As we soon enter into the 2014 sporting season, we do hope and anticipate that more parents may ‘lend a hand’ with assisting in what is a valuable service that caters for ALL the College’s sporting community. We look forward to YOUR help! OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS: SPC Under 15 Track & Field Athletes – completed the AIC Track & Field Championships in 1st position and were crowned the 2013 U15 Premiers. SPC Under 16 Schools Cup Volleyball Team – placed 2nd (Silver) at the recent Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup in Division 1. SPC Under 15 Schools Cup Volleyball Team - placed 2nd (Silver) at the recent Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup in Honours Division. CONGRATULATIONS Ethan Ryan (Year 5) - Competed at the Queensland Primary Track & Field Championships this week. Making the semifinal Ethan placed 17th out of 48 competitor . His Metropolitan North Under 10 Relay Team won Bronze in the 4 x 100m. BEST OF LUCK Next Monday 28th October St Patrick’s College will be represented at the annual AIC Golf Championships to be held at Pacific Golf Course, Wynnum. The following five students have been selected to represent our College at this annual event - Richard Cook, Brock McLean, Matthew McMaster, Liam Smith and Matthew Fegan. Together with Mr Chris Carlill, we wish all our golfers the very best of luck for next Monday. We wish the following St Patrick’s College students the best of luck and success for the forthcoming Queensland Secondary Track & Field Championships which commence on Thursday 24th October at SAF, Nathan.
