TOPEKA is the $20,000 valued top selling bull of our Performance Power 2008 sale. He was selected by Ahtanum Valley Salers and a syndicate group of 10 Salers breed-ers for his outstanding phenotype, strong carcass and ultrasound data and homozygous black genotype, all wrapped up in a unique genetic outcross package. TOPEKA has since become one of the most widely used bulls in the Salers breed with very high customer satisfaction from both seedstock and commercial customers. His first son to sell, MAC WYNDHAM 54W, was named the 2010 National Reserve Champion Bull. A daughter, DCS WINDY 91W, was named Grand Champion Female at the Salers Junior National of the same year. AVS WARHEAD 902W was the $7300 top selling bull of the 2010 Midland Bull Test and was also the 3rd best RFI bull out of over 800 bulls of all breeds tested at the 2010 Midland Bull Test. His next calf crop produced AVS OUT WEST 210X, the 2011 Salers Sire Futurity Champion bull and also grabbed the at-tention of the breed with his son OPP CUSTOM MADE of 50K who topped the 2011 Midland Bull Test Salers sale at $17,000 and he again sired a son who was in the top 20 bulls of all breeds at the Midland Bull Test for RFI. TOPEKA calves are light to moderate in birth weight and he is suitable for use on heifers. Feet, soundness and structure are all outstanding. He is the largest ribeye area sire in the Salers breed with one of the highest accuracy values for that trait. His daughters are outstanding as well.

REDFORD is a true calving ease sire and one of the top bulls in the breed for both birth weight and calving ease direct EPD’s. He produces moderate-framed, easy-fleshing, deep-sided and very productive daughters. Gentle dispositions are a consistent feature of his progeny. WYO DIAMOND is one of the first herdsires to emerge from the West Hills Ranch breeding program in Fairview, WY. We retained HIGHPOINT as a sire to use in both natural and artificial service in our breeding program. He is a long-sided, deep-bodied bull who was among the heavi-est weaning calves of our 2010 calf crop and also had outstanding scan data. We purchased SABER in partnership with Panther Country Salers out of the 2009 Midland Bull Test sale. He is a 5/8 Salers and 3/8 Angus bull who has exceeded our expectations in nearly every category. His calves are light to moderate at birth with outstanding perfor-mance and attractive profiles that include lots of capacity and thickness. Dispositions are outstanding and his first calving daughters are angular females with very nice udder struc-ture. He is out of the same cow as our purebred herdsire, OPP ELIMINATOR 038X, and his mother is gaining a reputation as one of the great females of the Elm Creek cowherd.

SEMINOLE has seen heavy natural service use in our breeding program, especially on our Optimizer females. He produces moderate-framed, easy-fleshing and great dispositioned progeny with above average carcass traits. His daughters are moderate-framed, high-volume and gentle females with tremendous milking ability. He is quickly becoming one of our highest accuracy sires, with over 100 progeny in the registry.

PAWNEE holds the record for the heaviest adjusted 365 day weight we have ever recorded. At this point in his career, however, he is most noted for his beautifully designed, angular, clean-made and attractive daughters with nicely designed udders. His dam has also been the mother of herdsires for Weyer Ranch of Wibaux, MT and Sunken Canyon Ranch of Buhl, ID, as well as the grandmother of MAC F1 Solution 232S featured on the next page.

SAMURAI is one of the most reliable calving ease sires that we have ever used and has been used in natural service on our own heifers in years past. In addition to being easy calving, his calves grow well and have an attractive pattern with lots of thickness down their top and quarter, combined with a clean made design. He produces strong-milking, gentle, nice-uddered daughters like the dam of MAC YELLADOX featured on page 9.

The MacDonald Ranch StoryMacDonald Ranches is owned and operated by Bill and Linda MacDonald along with their son, Will, and his wife, Jerilyn. The ranch is located 10 miles southeast of Bis-marck, North Dakota on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River valley on scenic State Hwy 1804, so-named for the year Lewis and Clark traveled up the Missouri River. Bill’s grandfather homesteaded here in the 1880’s. Among other illustrious projects, this pioneering Scotchman hauled the cornerstone for the first state capitol building and supplied ice cut from the nearby frozen Missouri River to Bismarck iceboxes. Bill’s father, Jim, began the seedstock enter-prise in 1939 with the purchase of his first registered Polled Hereford females. We have been breeding Salers since 1983. We have had an annual production sale every year since 1972.

We breed around 500 females that serve as the foundation of our Salers and Optimizer composite breeding program. We do over 400 AI services and implant 50-75 embryos each year in our effort to introduce the best possible genet-ics into our seedstock offering. We have collected carcass data on all of our cull steers and heifers since 1995 and 2012 marks the 13th year that we have ultrasounded all of our bulls and replacement heifers for carcass traits. A unique aspect of our carcass research is that we feed all of our own cattle out to finish right on the ranch. This gives us an opportunity to connect the number data with the experi-ence of seeing and feeding the cattle everyday ourselves.

Calving Ease and Calf VigorSalers females are well-documented to have the largest pelvic area of any U.S. beef breed of cattle. This, combined with the slender shape of the Salers calf results in a very pleasant calving experience. These factors, along with the Salers calf’s incredible ability to get up and sucking immediately after birth gives them the greatest possible calf survivability rate at birth.

MaternalEfficiencySalers are very efficient at raising a big calf and coming back bred year after. They are long-lived females with an average lifespan of 12-14 years. Udder quality is generally good and feet and leg problems are minimal.

Research has documented their willingness to graze at higher elevations and travel farther from water than most other breeds.
