This project was a competition for Clemson Architecture students sponsored by a couple from Greenville, seeking creative ideas for a new residence on a heavily wooded lot in Greenville, SC. The students who entered the competition were given two weeks to produce a concept that renovated and expanded the existing pool house and pool to create a house for a family of five. The main features desired by the family were an open floor plan for the living space, a strong indoor/outdoor connection, and a low maintenance site plan. The overarching aesthetic concept is based on the existing structure and its environs, which are heavily overgrown and are nearly hidden by the woods that have overtaken them.

Building technology has come so far in the past century that contemporary architects can focus on their own abstract con-cepts or the programmatic needs of a space without ever compromising the air quality of the interior. This design philoso-phy, of placing air and light quality at the end of the list of requirements, goes against millenia of architectural precedents. This project is a study in the quality of air and indirect natural light through simple, thoughtful systems that minimize power consumption and maximize human experience. This is accomplished through three design strategies: breaking the struc-ture into a campus of small, narrow buildings, surrounding this complex with a reflection pond, and the design of a unique roof that functions as a light shelf that allows for passive air flow.

The orientation of overhangs and full glass walls, combined with roof shape, are dictated by the sun exposure throughout the year.

In our society, the car is king. Most people can not imagine what it would be like to not own a car or to not commute in traffic to work or school every day. The modern gasoline powered automobile is an excellent invention, and has many posi-tive factors. However, for many everyday uses, the common car is far too large, far too powerful, and is too wasteful for us to continue with this status quo. This is why my project is to design a structure to act as a dealership for human powered vehicles, bikes, and small electric cars to give those in the Clemson area a choice when it comes time to decide how they will get around town. The question now becomes: how should the architecture for suchproducts relate to the products themselves? My premise is that architecture can be sensitive to environmental concerns without losing anything that cur-rently makes it exciting, such as interesting forms and a grand impression. The main driving force behind my design is the creation of a low energy building that uses architectural features as well as site design to use nature to its advantage. I also took inspiration from the architect Malcolm Wells, the father of earth sheltered design.

The orientation of the building as a shed opening to the North allows for large quantities of natural light to enter without any heat gain is-sues. The South side is much lower, blocking unwanted solar heat gain in the summer. The overhangs are carefully placed to allow solar heat gain in the cold months, using the concrete floor slab as a heat sink to distribute and retain the heat. A large skylight completes the natural lighting. Low and high venting windows, as well as an oper-able skylight vent, allow for gentle cross-breezes to passively cool the building during mild months.

This project was to design a residential boarding school for girls in Carrefour, Haiti. The concept for this project developed from the apparent destruction of Haiti’s natural beauty by both natural disasters and human waste. My group partner and I designed this project as a step in the other direction, to conserve and rebuild the forests and animal life in an attempt to revitalize a small part of Haiti. To this end, we used simple geothermal tubes and fans to cool the complex, bamboo as the main structural element, set up a rain water collection system, and created a large garden for the growing of organic produce for the school. We also placed the buildings in order to conserve the maximum number of existing trees. In ad-dition to sustainability and regrowth, this project focused on the community life of the school, with various courtyards and landscape features to encourage human interaction.

Product DesignTectonic details are often forgotten when designing at the scale of a community or a building. It is only through the creation of full scale objects that we can realize how complex even simple designs are. I have enjoyed creating objects that can be held and appreciated at a minute scale.

Travel StoolYear: SeniorDuration: One Week

At the beginning of my senior year, my class was assigned a one week charette project to design an object that exemplified what we had learned and been influenced by in the past year. As I had just returned from my study abroad trip in Italy, my mind was still full of travel sketches and the mentality of a student on the move. Over the summer I had taken an interest in wood working. I decided to combine the two passions of travel sketching and wood working into a travel stool that houses a small sketchbook and several pens and can be carried like a small briefcase.

Portfolio CaseYear: SophomoreInstructor: Rob SilanceDuration: Two Weeks

The project statement was to design a unique case for a portfolio. My original concept was a simple cylinder with a complex puzzle lock. As the concept developed, I decided to internalize the locking mechanism, leading the user explore the outside surface of the case in order to discover how to open it. The door is approximately one third of the cylinder’s circumference, and is opened by depressing the entire door and rolling it back into the cylinder. A custom spring and bearing system help the door to roll and lock back into place.
