and Charles Cotton, the authors of the very successful The Cambridge

Phenomenon: 50 Years of Innovation and Enterprise. Their first book, to

be published in a Mandarin version in March 2015, described in vivid

detail the history of the Cambridge UK technology cluster since the 1960s.

This time, they will be exploring the many ways in which Cambridge

technologies, Cambridge companies and Cambridge entrepreneurs have

improved the lives of people around the world.

Computing, drugs, inkjet printing, semiconductors, software, technology

consulting, telecommunications, and many more; the extraordinary range

The Cambridge Phenomenon: Global Impact takes a multi-faceted

approach that allows the authors to examine not just particular product and

service concepts that have emerged from Cambridge, but also the technology

sectors and business model innovations that have been behind some of

Cambridge’s biggest successes. They explore how the thriving entrepreneurial

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Charles Cotton has been part of the Cambridge technology scene

since he came to the city in the 1980s to join Sinclair Research,

working for inventor and entrepreneur Clive Sinclair in the home

computer market. Since then, he has taken technology companies

public on the London Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, and Euronext

Amsterdam and become a well-known advocate for entrepreneurship.

Among other activities, he is currently on the Board of Trustees of

the American University of Sharjah, UAE; a Director of Solarflare, the

Irvine California and Cambridge UK company; a Director of Cambridge

Enterprise, the organisation responsible for spin-outs, licensing and

consulting originating from research in the University of Cambridge;

and an Honorary Vice-Chairman of Cambridge Ahead, the business

and academic member group dedicated to the successful growth of

Cambridge and its region. In 2009, he set up what is now known as

Cambridge Phenomenon International to acknowledge and promote

the organisations, people and products behind Cambridge’s unique

information technology and life sciences cluster.

Kate Kirk has been a freelance editor, writer and public relations

consultant for more than 20 years. Her list of clients includes the

Asian Development Bank, business schools such as the Cambridge

Judge, IESE, and INSEAD, the Cambridge Enterprise Conference, the

International Rice Research Institute, RAND Europe, the World Bank,

and the World Health Organization. She has written a number of books

on management and enterprise, and numerous feature articles on topics

ranging from hot-air ballooning to data modelling and risk assessment

for financial institutions. Kate is also a trustee of the Arthur Rank

Hospice Charity and palliative care research and education charity

Cicely Saunders International.

by Charles Cotton to celebrate the many facets of Cambridge’s unique
