MONTHLY MEETING
JUNE 15th
2019 CAMELLIA SEASON
We had another supprise this month, with our Camellia
Japonica ‘Debutante’ producing quite a few Formal
Doubles as well as the usual informal ones. They are
found all over the tree and not just on one branch like a
sport. It certainly makes for an amazing display!

JUNE 4TH 2019
‘Everyone talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it’ but what can
we do other than endure it. After weeks of no rain we have at last had 2mm
yesterday and 20mm overnight here in Campbelltown. I hope that those in the
Illawarra have had more.
The May monthly meeting was well attended with 24 members and we were all
enthralled by Lorraine Heath’s talk and photo display about her visit to Kaydale
Gardens in Nietta NW Tasmania.
Committee meetings are currently all about our upcomming shows. Anyone who has
not already volunteered for a job at our main show (20th -21st ) is encouraged to do
so. Setting up will be done on Thursday 18th and benching will be open on Friday
19th as well as the morning of the Show Saturday 20th . Schedules and competitor
cards will be available again at the next monthly meeting.
Everyone is asked to show as many blooms as posible as we may be down on
bloom numbers due to the weather and the absence of some exhibitors. William will
be giving his talk about showing of blooms at the June meeting and anyone who
has doubts about what to do on the day should approach a steward for advice. I am
sure they will be only too glad to help.
The monthly bloom comp had a good number of lovely flowers last month and we’ll
look forward to even more next meeting.
So, see you all at the June meeting with lots of blooms.
Regards Don

SHOW TIMELINE
The flyers and schedules for both shows have been printed and will be available at the JUNE
Monthly Meeting. Please take some flyers and hand them out to all your friends. We really need
the word to get out there. We also have Shop window Posters and would like these to be
displayed around the district, so please ask your local garden centre or favourite shop if they will
display one.
It’s also time to think about what jobs you’re able to do at the ANNUAL SHOW. We always need all
hands on deck for SHOW SETUP on the Thursday before the show. Please let the committee know
what jobs you can do. All offers of help will be gladly accepted.
All the show timeline items are slowly being ticked off by the committee and we are keeping up
with each month.
The Champion cetificates have been updated and printed. New ribbons and sashes have arrived,
ribbon cards have been printed and cut, ready for sticking together.
If you usually do a job at the show and are willing to do it again this year, PLEASE put your name
on the JOBS AT THE SHOW register at the JUNE Meeting. It is very important that we have all jobs
filled by the END of the MEETING!

Next meeting --- Saturday 15th June 2019 at Bulli Uniting Church at 1pm.
Lorraine Heath then gave us an interesting insight into the “Kaydale Lodge Gardens” on the
North-Western Coast of Tasmania, owned by Robert and Kay Crowden.
Robert and Kay were married in 1970.
They built a new house with the intention of providing Bed and Breakfast to travellers and to
serve other meals once they became established. They did this very well, and as time passed they
became parents of two girls who, as they became older and efficient in horticulture, assisted their
parents in all manner of gardening, such as ‘Landscaping’ and ‘Grafting’.
Items of interest in their garden which in 1979 was a bare paddock were Daffodils created by
cross-fertilizing, a thyme lawn, Dahlias, Wisteria, a walk-way of grafted pear trees and many other
interesting items of horticulture. Lorraine concluded her talk with a slide show that included a
very photogenic black cat.
On behalf of all present, Don expressed his thanks to Lorraine for a very pleasing presentation
At the conclusion of the talk we enjoyed afternoon tea.
