St. Catherine’s School

A Letter From The Co-Chairs

Excitement abounds during the Gold/White competition.

Campus is abuzz with excitement as spring brings many long-held traditions at St. Catherine’s. From

Daisy Days, Reunion Weekend, and spring sports to Gold/White competitions, the Ring-Candlelight ceremony, and the daisy chain at graduation, there is never a dull moment!

Construction on the Upper School Science Center is on budget and on track to be completed in August, ensuring a new building for the 2012-2013 school year. The School is committed to remaining on the forefront of education, and a cutting-edge science facility that supports our rigorous curriculum will benefit generations of girls to come.

Thus far, we have raised 76 percent of the total funds needed to complete our four-phase campaign, For Girls Who Will Shape the Future. We are incredibly thankful for the families, alumnae, grandparents, faculty and staff who have made a commitment during the leadership phase of the campaign.

We are delighted to announce the following parent division-level co-chairs of the campaign: Lower School – Connor and Elizabeth Johnson, Brent and Anna King; Middle School – Matt and Ellie Brown Caplice ’90, Joe and Caroline Murillo; Upper School – Garrett and Helen Hamilton Horsley ’83, Mike and Meg Walker. We would like to extend to them our sincerest gratitude for their tireless work with their committees.

In the coming months, we will continue to invite alumnae, parents, grandparents and friends of St. Catherine’s to join in

this ambitious effort. We hope you will be receptive to our volunteers as they reach out to the greater St. Catherine’s community.

Thank you for your support of our girls, whether you give your time, talent or treasure. The School has never had more momentum in so many areas, from academics to the arts and our state-championship athletic teams. We all continue to be very blessed to be a part of this incredible institution.

Help ensure that St. Catherine’s students will have the facilities they need to become the leaders they are born to be. The Richard S. Reynolds Foundation has issued a challenge to our school community. The Foundation will match new monies raised

for the science building dollar for dollar up to $500,000. The Challenge encourages you to get involved by maximizing your donation and helping your gift go twice as far.

To learn more about the Challenge and how your gift can have double the impact, visit afutureforgirls.org or contact the Development Office at (804) 281-7141.

Spring blooms at the construction site as the final windows are installed and bricks are laid.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT:

Luck On Our Side

If you have driven down Cary Street and River Road to the Goochland fields recently, you know the amazing

transformation that has taken place over the last several months in preparation for the spring athletics season.

Through the generosity of current parents Charlie and Lisa Luck, renovations began in summer 2011. Changes include the addition of a new JV softball field with dugouts, new landscaping with an irrigation system, an expanded parking area and stately stone columns that mark the entrance.

Asked why they chose to contribute specifically to the Goochland fields, Lisa felt that the fields were not receiving the same attention as the main campus.

“Parents of girls from other schools who play spring sports against St. Catherine’s may only ever see the Goochland fields,” she said. “These families have no other exposure to the School than the fields, so it is important to Charlie and me that the fields are just as beautiful as the main campus.”

Charlie and Lisa have long been stewards of St. Catherine’s. Both served as co-chairs of the campaign that raised funds for the Anne Whitfield Kenny ’51 Athletic Center and the initial development of the Goochland property.

“We were very excited to be a part of that campaign,” Lisa said. “One reason was due to the future potential that we saw in the Goochland property, as we see it being so much more to the St. Catherine’s community than just ‘athletic fields.’”

Currently, Lisa serves on the Buildings and Grounds Committee, as well as the newly formed focus group whose aim is the creation and implementation of a master plan for the 145-acre Goochland property.

“We are particularly interested in the appearance and maintenance of the property and felt that the timing was right to make a difference,” Lisa said in reference to their donation.

Athletic Director Julie Dayton thanks the Luck family for their vision and contribution to St. Catherine’s.

“Lisa and Charlie Luck are incredibly thoughtful in everything they do,” Dayton said. “They are passionate about making things better for our girls, and they recognize that our athletic program and our facilities represent the School brand. The new look at our Goochland fields can be traced directly back to the Lucks. To have them on our team is a gift.”

“ Our hope is that by some small chance we can motivate others to get involved in whatever way — either through time, talent, or financial means.”
