Vanuatu The response to the request for donations to those in need in Vanuatu was overwhelming. Five chokka-block SUV loads of donated goods were taken away from the school. They are now bound for these devastated islands by way of a cruise ship. Because of this huge tragedy almost on our back doorstep all donations from the mufti day on the last day of term (see promotion below) will go to aid Vanuatu. In the spirit of 'not self but service' gold coins and paper notes are very much appreciated. Thanks.

1974 - Part 7

I finished last week with a comment about the increasing knowledge base of teachers compared with my early days in the profession. While qualifications are certainly not everything, there has been a marked change in the base line qualifications of teachers over the years. In 1974 I graduated with a Diploma from Teachers’ Training College, the result of a three year course. Not many years before it had been a two year course. Most of us who started teaching in those days

started with this qualification although a small number did undertake university study towards a degree parallel to their training college study. Today teachers embarking upon their careers are armed with a Bachelor’s degree coupled with a further year of university study to prepare them for teaching. Teachers are now ‘provisionally registered to teach’ and are under close professional guidance in school for two years compared with the previous one year. Qualification providers have ‘met the market’ when it comes to providing support to teachers and schools to acquire additional and specific knowledge and expertise to meet the needs of students. At any one time there will be more than the proverbial handful of teachers who undertake study towards additional formal post graduate qualifications, while many more undertake specific courses on a needs basis. While we always had our free teachers’ advisory service (and the demise of much of this is a cause for lament) we do have access to, on a user pays basis, expertise that we can engage to meet specific identified issues with individual teachers, groups of teachers or across the school. A theme of these articles has been that education has evolved as society has evolved. Hence, education has seen what could be called ‘qualification creep,’ very much in line with the rest of society. In 1974 a

Teachers’ Training College Diploma was the order of the day. Today it is a Degree with a post graduate qualification. In terms of school leadership, in the mid-seventies the aforementioned diploma that became a Teachers’ Certificate after a year of teaching was sufficient to become a senior school leader and/or principal.

While today there is no minimum qualification for principalship, as each board of trustees is empowered to make this employment decision, the very minimum for appointments in recent times is the aforementioned bachelor’s degree. However, it is most likely that this degree will be supplemented with a diploma in leadership with many principals now having master’s degrees in educational leadership. Of course, a higher qualification does not necessarily make a person a better teacher but it should make a person a better teacher or leader who has the required aptitudes and dispositions for teaching and leadership.

Forest Weeding Many thanks to those helpers that assisted with the weeding of the forest on Wednesday last week. There was a grand turnout to help the younger children wrestle the strong growing weeds and the senior classes who helped, made good inroads into the undergrowth in their areas. The trees have held on over the summer drought and their growth should pick up now with the autumn dampness. The school appreciates your efforts in keeping this valuable asset progressing in its growth. Thanks - Jenny Hunter

Invitation The school will be holding a ceremony, starting at 9.30 am on Friday 24 April, to commemorate the anniversary of the one hundredth landing at Gallipoli. Weather permitting, the ceremony will be held on the netball court near the flag poles. Representatives of the Royal New Zealand Navy will be in attendance. Members of our school community are invited to attend the ceremony. Please note that the ceremony will go ahead irrespective of the weather with the alternative venue being the hall. Should the hall be the venue, our capacity to host visitors will be somewhat diminished. Let's hope for fine weather.

WWII Unveiling at Kennedy Park

On Tuesday 31 March, Campbells Bay School kapa haka will be performing at a plaque unveiling ceremony of a new plinth that is being installed at Kennedy Park. We have been invited to perform by the Kennedy Park WWII Trust. The ceremony runs from 9.50am until approximately 10.40 am. Members of our school community are very welcome to attend this event.

Interested in Walking to School? Campbells Bay is expanding the Walking School Bus network and would like to include every street in our zone on the bus routes, so that every child who can walk to school is able. Mark Osborne, senior consultant for Core Education and Deputy Principal of Albany Senior High said last week; “children who exercise are more effective learners.” In 2009, 35% of our Campbells Bay students walked to school. With our fast growing roll just imagine how much safer our children would be outside CBS before and after school. Parents you would have more ‘me time’ if you delegated responsibility for your children’s safe walking or riding to school. There is no obligation to walk to and from school every day, as walking buses are generally arranged to fit in with families’ schedules! If you are interested in joining the walkers, please text or call Liz Donnelly on 0274873278 for more information. Our aim is to encourage 80% of our CBS students to be travelwise and walk, bike, bus, carpool, drop and walk or scooter to school.

Amazing result in a year where others have struggled

I would like to thank everyone who has helped support this event and all those who have entered. We have had an outstanding response and achieved the highest number of entries Campbells Bay has ever had. In fact any school has ever had for the second year in a row. This would not be possible without the support of the staff at school and we have the highest number of staffed entered this year. 2015 has been a year where many schools have struggled to get sup-port and the new online system has tested many people. To my knowledge we have twice as many entries as the next best school. We are privileged to have such a supportive community who are willing to back the school and be a part of this great community event. Again I have been amazed at how many families have registered.

Total entries: 810 for CBS I look forward to seeing all those participating this Sunday the 29 March. MRE is running a sausage sizzle at the finish line for us. Due to the new online system you will need to pay for the sausages when you arrive at the tent. A reminder to all students to wear their uniform top and to dress up blue, e.g. blue face paint, hair and any other creative accessories they can find. Thank You for your support Rob Padgett

Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon 2015 Yesterday 87 CBS students from Years 3 to 6 attended the Weet-Bix Kids Tryathlon at Woodall Park in Devonport. It was an amazing morning of activity, sunshine, smiles, determination, proud achievements and great school spirit! Well done to all the students that participated. Everyone showed great determination and gave of their best. They really did CBS proud. Thank you to all the parents and family members who came along to cheer on their children and show their support for CBS. A special thank you to Simon Maunder, Jots Rajput, Gregg Walker and Hilton Marran for helping set up and pack away our CBS tent area. They helped us to have a wonderful shaded area where we could all meet and relax together. It was a fun day and it was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and so many happy, smiling faces. There was a real sense of pride amongst the children and the parents. Again, well done to everyone and thank you for such an enjoyable day. Keri Maunder

Rugby trials are underway across the different age groups for the Primary Schools rugby competition. More information about this is on the school Google site under "Sports" and "Rugby". Please note that the first round on 30 April is when Year 5 are at camp. This means that in many of our senior rugby teams there will be some different children playing in round 1 to those playing in rounds 2 and 3. The advantage of this is that more of our Year 6’s will get to participate in round 1 than would do normally. This week: Tuesday - 7.45am - tackle rugby training squad (Years 5 and 6).

Wednesday - 8.00am - mixed rippa rugby (Year 4) - need boys and girls

- 8.00am - boys Year 6 rippa with Mr Nu'u We are currently very short on parent help so it is proving difficult to get these rippa teams up and running. Can you please contact Liz Brotherton if you can help with a particular age group. (lizb@campbellsbay.school.nz) For all sessions before school we recommend that the children come in sports clothes and get changed for school. They all play in bare feet. If any session needs to be cancelled a notice will be put on the school sports Facebook page and on the front of the sports pages on the school Google site at 7.30am. Golf

Much Loved Found on the school grounds last week and yet to be claimed. We are sure somebody is missing this keepsake. We are taking good care of this treasured possession in the office. (I think Cushla has become quite attached so you better get to the office quickly!)
