NBS’ 2018 Gala: La Belle ÉpoqueRaising Funds for Professional and Community Dance Education
Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS) will host its annual fundraising Gala on March 1, 2018, and is taking a cue from la ville-lumière; the ‘city of lights’ and of enlightenment . Paris à la Belle Époque – Degas’ Paris – was a place and time of both great spectacle and significant progress; a world hub for technological advancement, education, optimism, grandeur and joy . Much like Paris during “the beautiful era”, NBS today is a beacon for technological progress, profound artistry and the human spirit . The School’s programs embrace innovation to reflect the changing nature of ballet in the 21st century, and foster widespread arts education opportunities for everyone, encouraging improved health and well-being through dance and movement .
The annual Gala is NBS' signature fundraising event . It raises funds for the nearly 75% of students who require financial assistance to attend the Professional Ballet Program, and supports the development of new resources, program development, teacher training, and technological enhancements that help grow NBS’ flagship community program, Sharing Dance .
Last year’s Gala welcomed more than 550 individuals, organizations and business leaders from a broad range of industry sectors, and raised more than $1 million for the School . We invite you to take a leadership position among an elite group of companies and supporters by becoming a Sponsor, Table Host, Ticket Purchaser or Event Donor, helping NBS share dance and open doors for the next generation of dancers .
Please consider joining us for an evening of cultural abundance, celebrating the creativity and vitality of NBS’ programming in the effervescent style of Parisians at the turn of the century .

Edgar Degas (1834–1917): A Centenary TributeThis autumn marks the centenary of the death of French impressionist painter Edgar Degas, whose most celebrated work was dedicated to the theme of dance . In various sketches, pastels, oil paintings and sculptures, Degas studied the movement and lifestyles of ballet dancers at the Paris Opera House at the turn of the century . In turn, he created a series of works that depict the beauty of the ballet art form, the comradery of dancers in training, and the elegance of staged performance .
The opportunity to contribute to Canada’s National Ballet School was an honour for Frank and me. We feel very passionate about the arts in Canada and education in general. NBS and the dancers it develops are an important part of the culture of Canada and something we are pleased to support.

Reuven International Limited is an avid NBS supporter, and celebrates their selection process for students, which is based on merit, not the ability to pay. This encourages the development of the best talent and the growth of a vibrant and healthy art. The Gala supports the School’s professional and community programs, and is by far one of the best and most exciting events of the year! The event is elegant and enjoyable with incredible performances and wonderful post-dinner entertainment, including a late-night lounge.

NBS Practice Tutu Recipe
Did You Know? ◆◆ NBS has its own fully
operational wardrobe department led by Wardrobe Supervisor, Robyn Clarke . For any given new choreographic work, the department engages up to 5 people to assist in the creation of new costumes, plus 2 dressers to assist backstage for all performances .
◆◆◆◆At NBS, senior female students get their first practice tutu in grade 11 and wear it in class for the remainder of their studies (grade 11 to Post-Secondary) . That amounts to about 50 practice tutus worn at NBS per year (approximately 15 newly crafted tutus per year) . That’s enough tutu netting to span the entire height of the Eiffel Tower – the world’s tallest structure from 1889 to 1931 at 324 metres (1,063 ft)
◆◆ To accommodate all grade 11 girls, about 15 new tutus are required per year . That’s a minimum of 360 crafting hours and $7,500 in labour and materials .
◆◆ The cost of a practice tutu is $500, including about $150 in materials and $350 in labour .
◆◆ The cost of a fully decorated performance tutu ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
Prep Time:24 hours of labour per tutu (90 hours for beginners)
Yields: 1 practice tutu
