Join our learning adventures that offer opportunities for students to explore their interests. Follow your passions or be a risk-taker and try something new. Our activities are in line with Canadian Academy’s

philosophy and practices, with a touch of summer fun!

All programs are designed for both CA students and non-CA students. We have enrolled students from Niger, Canada, China, France, India, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United

States, and all over Japan.

Students must be at least 4 years old by September 30, 2016. Pre-K students will be limited to those who are currently attending Canadian Academy.

Elementary Summer Experience is taught in English. Students applying for programs other than

‘Summer Fun @ CA’ should have enough English to follow instructions.

Our Staff Our Summer Program staff consists of a mix of Canadian Academy faculty, veteran summer school staff, college and high school students, and some student volunteers. With unique personalities, backgrounds and talents, they are placed according to the position that best fits their experience and knowledge. Over 75% of our staff are CPR certified, others trained in CPR/First Aid, and our low student - staff ratio allows constant supervision to provide a safe environment to enhance involvement and learning. Our Location Canadian Academy is conveniently located on Rokko Island, an artificial island in the port city of Kobe, Japan. Please visit the Rokko Island City site for information on our school’s immediate environment. Our Facility Classrooms in the main building, ELAC (Early Learning and Activities Center), cafeteria, computer labs, main theater, P&G Black Box Theater, studios, Lilly Field, Nestle Field and both gymnasiums will be used during the summer. Accommodation Students and their families traveling from afar can receive special discount from Hotel Plaza Kobe. Please ask for more detail.

ELEMENTARY SUMMER EXPERIENCE (current Pre-K to Gr. 5) * Student must be at least 4 years old by September 30, 2016

* Pre-K students will be limited to those who are currently attending Canadian Academy. * Current Grade 5 students may take ES and/or MS courses.

The Elementary School Summer Experience is a full-day program from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for students currently enrolled in Pre-K through Grade 5. You may sign up your child for

one, two, three, or four weeks, whatever fits your family's schedule best!

“Choose your experience!” This year, students KB and older can choose their experiences! We have 4 periods of fun activities

throughout the day. For each period, you get to pick your first choice. Unfortunately, as the popular classes get full, we will have to close them and ask you to take the other class. So hurry!!!

Pre-K and KA students will focus on literacy, numeracy, fine and gross motor skills, and social skills in a fun and safe environment, much like Canadian Academy’s early childhood classroom setting. We will continue to expose children to learning experiences in line with Canadian Academy’s

philosophy, with a touch of summer fun!

Everyday is ‘Falcon Time!’ For half an hour each day, we have a mixed age activity time for skill building and fun! Each group is

consisted of Pre-K to grade 5 students and teachers and staff. Everyday is a fun challenge!

Super Science Time Mr. Mosser & Irene

Come and see and experience science with hands on experiments. Make slime, look through microscopes, and see into the earth and nature. In Super science time we explore the world around

us and see things in a whole new way.

Party Planning Committee Ms. White & Ms. Neukomm

Are you ready for Funday Fridays? Join the Party Planning Committee and spend each week planning a special party to host on Fridays. Students will be in charge of organizing the event, writing

invitations, and calculating the most they can do on a given budget.

Creative Kids Ms. Ramani & Ms. McHugh

Have fun making unique and interesting things that only YOU have - games, friendship bracelets, art projects, poems, treasure maps, and many other crafts, which can't be found in shops. Share your

special gifts with your family and friends.

Soccer Fundamentals Mr. Jan & Mr. Willis

The Soccer Fundamentals class will provide deeper understanding of soccer and its principles.

Students will be able to see the sport from different perspectives; as players, coaches and referees. Students will also learn the rules of the game and some basic physics and geometry behind the sport

appropriate to their age level.

Active Athletes Mr. Sera & Mr. White

The program will tailor to the ages and skill levels of the participants and group of children for instruction, skills development and games according to grade and experience. Fundamental skills,

sportsmanship, and knowledge of the game will be stressed consistently at all age levels. We will provide physical exercise through a fun experience. Some of the activities, but not limited to, will be the following: flag football, badminton, basketball, volleyball, and multi sports (kick ball, whiffle ball,

floor hockey, ultimate frisbee, various tag games, etc.).

Through the Lens Ms. Ishikawa & Ms. Judd

Do you like telling stories? Do you like taking photos? Are you fascinated by movies? In this class, we’ll be telling your stories through photographs and video. Be prepared to capture your ideas through

the camera!

HipHop Dance Mr. Fujiwara & LOGOS teachers

Feel the sound, move to the rhythm, learn the basic moves. Then experience the dynamic movements you can create with the HipHop music! The goal is to be a risk-taker.

Challenge this summer and dance with us!

Blow Life into LEGO! Mr. Kawamori & Shoichiro

Are you ready to be creative? In this class, you will learn some tips and tricks of building bricks from the expert model builder. Students will also explore making and moving their LEGO creations in a

variety of ways.

Some Information & Requests… First Monday Please meet in the ELAC Gym at 9:00 a.m. Each teacher/assistant will collect their students and proceed to their class. Supervision in the morning Summer School hours are from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Your child is welcome to come anytime after 8:45 each morning. Please do not send your child to school before 8:45. Absences Please notify the school (078) 857-0100 or email by 9:00 a.m. in case of your child’s absence from Summer School, or when s/he will be late. We endeavor to complete our attendance check by 9:15 every morning and phone the homes of children who are not accounted for. If your child is late or absent, your phoning us will be a big help. Pickup Please either pick up your child at or shortly after 3:00 p.m. or instruct him/her to return home soon after school finishes. We do NOT provide playground/gym supervision after the end of the school day at 3:00 p.m. All Pre-K to kindergarten students must be picked up by a parent unless notified in advance. Supplies Please send the following items, with every piece labeled with your child’s name. Children will have a cubby space to keep their belongings in. * Clean indoor gym shoes (NO sandals/crocs, they need to run safely!) * A hat or cap / sun screen * A bottle of water * Healthy snack (Fresh and dried fruits, vegetables, cheese, crackers, small onigiri are good choices. MYP Japanese Language and Literature for CURRENT Grades 5-8

8:30 - 10:30 A.M. Ms. Nishizawa (MYP/DP Japanese Language teacher)

Brush up on your reading and writing skills of Japanese during the summer to get a jump start in August! This course is designed for students who will be studying in the MYP Language and Literature

(native/near native) program Year 1-3. The focus of this course is on writing and reading skills. Students will study Kanji at his/her level; identify literary devices and analyze the author's choices;

learn how to write essays, and read self-selected novels.

MYP/DP Japanese Language and Literature for CURRENT Grades 8-11

Ms. Nishizawa (MYP/DP Japanese Language teacher)

This course is designed for students who will start studying in the MYP/DP Japanese Language and Literature course in high school (students should be able to read Japanese newspaper for adults).

The focus of this course is on “Textual Analysis.” Students will examine various text types such as advertisements, newspaper articles and magazine articles, and analyze its purpose, audience,

context, stylistic features and their effects to help them to prepare for the DP Japanese Language and Literature. Students will study Kanji at his/her level.

Japanese Language Acquisition for CURRENT Grades 7-11

Ms. Sugiyama (MYP/DP Japanese Language teacher)

This course is designed for students who will start studying in the MS/HS Japanese Language Acquisition course (MS J3/4 or HS II-V) in August. Students will read, write and discuss a variety of

topics such as communication and media, and global issues. They will also learn to analyze various text types (e.g. diary, newspaper articles and speech scripts). This workshop will help students to gain

essential knowledge and skills to prepare for the DP Japanese Language Acquisition programme. Students will study Kanji at his/her level. Get a head start during the summer!

Creative Writing: Where Do I Get My Inspiration? For CURRENT Grades 8-11

Mr. Schreiber (former CA MYP/DP English teacher) * Additional ¥3,500 for field trips needed

This course will provide an opportunity to explore different modes of inspiration for creative writing. Students will read, write, and share their writing every session. In addition, they will take

inspirational field trips to foster their creativity. These trips will include a visit to the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art and Sannomiya. On the field trips, students will take photos, look at art, write, and share their personal stories and observations. Students taking period 2 or 3 should plan to bring an

obento with them on field trip days where the class runs into lunchtime.

Jump Start Math I for CURRENT Grades 5-6

Mr. Okada (MYP/DP Math teacher)

Jumpstart Math Level 1 is a two weeks long summer program geared towards students who will be Grade 6 or 7 next academic year and interested in achieving a better or in-depth understanding of mathematics. Students who attend should be prepared to do a lot of problem solving. The course will cover different branches of mathematics such as arithmetic, combinatorics, pre-algebra and

problem solving. Different math competition problems, math puzzles and challenging games will be used throughout the course. This course will take maximum number of 10 students.

Strong SAT scores are vital for students who wish to apply to American and Canadian universities. Our two-week summer SAT preparation course introduces students to the core principles of Math that they will need to master in order to achieve a high score on this exam. At the start and the end of

each session, students complete a full diagnostic test with questions typical of the actual SAT 1 exams. Students must complete grade 9 or equivalent curriculum to take this course. This course will

take maximum number of 10 students.

Phrases You Should Know in Japanese for CURRENT Grades 7-8

Mr. Kim (Canadian Academy Alumnus)

Ever wanted to ask where the closest convenience store is? Ever got lost in the train station? This course will train your speaking skills in Japanese, allowing you not only to ask questions in Japanese, but understand the answers to your questions. You can learn that one phrase you always wanted to

use anywhere in Japan.

Having fun with Math For CURRENT Grades 5-6


Tired of answering problems after problems in math? Are you stressed from being graded constantly by the questions that are given by your teachers? This course will help you train your mindset towards

math and help you believe that you can learn at any level and do much better in math. In this course you will have tasks and group activities, which will require you to use your imagination to solve

pre-algebra and arithmetic.

Having fun with Math For CURRENT Grades 7-8


Math gets challenging and often stressful as you progress through high school. This course will provide you with different tasks and activities instead of the traditional worksheets, and they will help you

overcome the fear of higher level math and prepare you to enjoy math class in high school. You will cover Trigonometry, algebra and probability with the tasks that requires your imagination.

English Through Song Study For CURRENT Grades 5-8

Mr. McHugh (MYP Music Teacher / Professional Singer / Voice Actor)

Students will work through a program of English study that involves learning age-appropriate songs, with a focus on:

- Translating poetry and figures of speech into practical sentences - Studying English grammar (word order, descriptors and modifiers) - Phrasing, text stress and pronunciation - (Optional, for singers) Developing a rehearsal process for songs in English that includes both vocal technique and construction of meaning

Mini Musical For CURRENT Grades 7-11

Mr. McHugh (MYP/DP Music Teacher / Professional Singer / Voice Actor)

Together, students and camp leaders will brainstorm themes and/or stories, select pieces of music that fit with those themes/stories, write up scripts, find/design costumes and props, rehearse and put

on a musical production. This camp will explore world and youth topics, teach collaboration skills and allow students to build self-confidence in a supportive, casual and fun atmosphere.

Master Your Voice For CURRENT Grades 7-11

Mr. McHugh (MYP/DP Music Teacher / Professional Singer / Voice Actor)

Students will learn about methods of using their voices that can command greater attention and respect from audiences. Whatever their particular interests--vocal music, drama and theater… or

simply giving better presentations in school, future college/job interviews, etc. Students will discover the power their voices can have and how best to put that power to use.

Elementary Summer Experience Refund Policy

I. Summer school tuition: * On or before Monday, May 23, 2016: Full refund of all tuition fees. * By one week or more prior to the start of the first week(s) being canceled: 80% refund of tuition fees. * By six (6) days or less prior to the start of the first week(s) being canceled: 50% refund of tuition fees. * During a week registered for or after the final day of the week(s) registered for: No refund of tuition fees for such week(s). II. Typhoon, earthquake, or other “acts of God”: * No refund for any summer-school-related fees in the case of cancellation of school and/or of activities due to typhoon, earthquake, or other extreme events beyond the control of summer school staff. This includes cancellation of school due to epidemic outbreaks or any other government mandated closures. * In case of school closure, we will announce it on our school website http://www.canacad.ac.jp/. You can also check by phone, 078-857-0100. III. Finally: Because there is no entrance exam or interview, Canadian Academy reserves the right to ask a student to leave - even after the start of Elementary Summer Experience - if his or her behavior is repeatedly or extremely inappropriate. Any student asked to leave the summer school program based on circumstances covered in the aforementioned will receive 80% tuition refund for any week(s) he/she is enrolled in that follow the week in which he/she is asked to leave; no tuition refund for the week in which he/she is asked to leave. Secondary Summer Experience Refund Policy

& Special Enrollment Conditions

I. Fees may be made refunded pursuant to the following conditions: * On or before the date of the Summer School Application deadline (Monday, May 23, 2016): Full refund of all tuition fees. * By one week or more prior to the start of the first week(s) being canceled: 80% refund of tuition fees. * By six (6) days or less prior to the start of the first week(s) being canceled: 50% refund of tuition fees. * After the start of the course: No refund for any fees paid. * Full refund if the desired course is cancelled due to lack of interest. II. Typhoon, earthquake, or other “acts of God”: * No refund for any summer-school-related fees in the case of cancellation of school and/or of activities due to typhoon, earthquake or other extreme events beyond the control of summer school staff. This includes cancellation of school due to epidemic outbreaks or any other government mandated closures. * In case of school closure, we will announce it on our school website http://www.canacad.ac.jp/. Special Enrollment Conditions Individuals wanting to enroll in MS/HS classes for a single week will be charged a rate equivalent to one-half of the tuition of Late Applications (in 2016, this equals ¥16,250 for one week of one class). Refund of such fees follows the same policy as the above. IV. Finally:

• All programs are designed especially for CA students; however, non-CA students are welcome to attend. Instruction language is English. Students will need enough English to follow directions.

• Because there is no entrance exam or interview, Canadian Academy reserves the right to ask a student to leave - even after the start of Secondary Summer Experience - if his or her behavior is repeatedly or extremely inappropriate. Any student asked to leave the summer school program based on circumstances covered in the aforementioned will receive 80% tuition refund for the second week if still in the first week; no tuition refund for the week in which he/she is asked to leave.
