Cancer Prevention: 6 Simple Lifestyle Changes
While many mistakenly believe that cancer is primarily a hereditary disease, the truth is that bad genes are to blame for only a small
fraction of those with cancer.
The majority of cancers are due to lifestyle choices, foods consumed, and the amount of
exercise incorporated into a daily routine.
Experts believe that one-third to one-half of all cancers can be prevented, according to UW Health. This is because there are certain
lifestyle choices and daily habits that can make us more likely to get cancer.
So, what can you do to prevent cancer? The Hope4Cancer® Institute reviews some steps
you can take:
Smoking greatly increases your chances of getting cancers of the lung, bladder, kidneys, pancreas,
mouth, esophagus, and throat. By quitting, you lower your chances of getting cancer.
Stop smoking
A healthy diet is important for preventing many digestive diseases, such as colorectal, esophageal, and liver cancers. Your diet should include a variety of vegetables, fruits, fish, poultry, and whole grains.
Also, limit the amount of fats and sugars.
Eat healthy
Regular physical activity helps prevent obesity-related cancers, including breast, colon and rectum,
esophagus, pancreas, and kidney, among others. Regular exercise also helps you get at and stay at a healthy weight, which can also help keep you from
getting cancer.
Exercise regularly
Most skin cancer is caused by excessive sun exposure. To avoid skin cancer, apply sunscreen,
wear protective clothing, stay out of the sun when you can, and avoid tanning booths.
Protect your skin
Research has shown that the more alcohol a person drinks regularly, the greater their chances of
developing several types of cancers, including head and neck, esophageal, liver, breast, and colon.
Ideally, you should limit your alcohol consumption to 2 drinks a day.
Consume alcohol moderately
Visit your doctor for regular checkups to ensure you stay healthy. Also, your doctor
can schedule screenings for various types of cancer. Screenings and checkups can detect
cancer early, when it’s easier to treat and may be curable.
