Candle-Power CP12 User Guide

Candle-Power CP12 (hereafter CP12) is a constant current dimmer. It is designed to control high power LED devices such as those available from Lumileds™ and Cree. The product is presented in a DIN rail case that allows rail or surface mounting; it is powered via an external power supply unit (15-48 VDC).

CP12 provides up to 12 channels of constant current dimming (i.e. 4 sets of RGB circuits). Each of the 12 outputs can drive up to 12 high power LEDs in series, giving a total load capability of 144 LEDs.

The control interface is DMX512 and RDM. All parameters (including start address) are set using RDM. This can be done using an RDM programmer, such as Jump-Start, or an Art-Net-to-DMX node that supports RDM, such as Art-Lynx O/P.

Power CP12 is powered from an external power supply (15 to 48 VDC). We recommend that a

Product variants

DMX connection

CP12 is available in a number of variants, which are defined by the modules that are fitted.

The respective part numbers of the modules (CPM) and composite products (CP12) are as follows:

y CPM-yyy mA

y CP12-xx-yyy mA

One CPM module has three channels, and a composite CP12 product can have up to four modules fitted.

It follows that xx, which is the number of channels, can be 3, 6, 9 or 12.

Dimming & ModulationCP12 is a constant current dimmer. This means that it puts out a controlled current, so the fixture does not need electronics for current control of the LED.

This style of dimming is used for higher power LED products such as Rebel. The LED fixtures connected to the outputs must be designed for constant current operation. This product must not be used to drive ordinary constant voltage LEDs.

CP12 modulates the LED outputs using a technique called Asymmetric Frequency Modulation (AFM). AFM is an evolution of the frequency modulation technique pioneered by Artistic Licence and published to the public domain in 2002.

CP12 has a built in terminating resistor as specified in the DMX512 specification. If the CP12 is to be situated at the end of the DMX line the ‘TERM’ & ‘DAT+’ terminals can be connected together to provide suitable termination.

ferrite core be fitted onto the DC power lines as close as possible to the CP12 to protect the unit from any electrical spikes that appear on the DC line. CP12 must be disconnected from the PSU before connecting LEDs to the outputs.

Module Configuration

Sensors

LED indication

The current rating of the CP modules are factory configured. The current selection must match the type of LED being driven, e.g.

y Luxeon 1W LEDs require 350mA

y Luxeon 3W LEDs require 700mA

To identify the current rating of a module, there is a simple colour coding found on the bottom left of the module and on the front panel of the CP12, defined in the following table:

Module fitting instructions:

y Remove power to the unit, and ensure anti-static precautions are observed

y Lift the clear top lid and carefully remove the bottom cover

y Remove module that is to be replaced (if applicable)

y Slot in new module making sure pins are in the correct position

y Ensure module current rating is correct for the LEDs being controlled

y Module slots are clearly labelled and must be used in numerical order: slot 1, slot 2, slot 3 then slot 4

y Replace cover and lid

CP12 features internal and external sensors:

Temperature Faults

CP12 features red and green LED indicators for power and data respectively. The meanings are summarised in the following table:

yyy is the current rating. Stock modules are rated at 350 mA, 500 mA or 700 mA (100 mA and 550 mA are available as custom order).

It is possible to mix modules, so that CP12 can drive different rated LEDs on each of its outputs.

Blinking On/Off Temperature fault

Warning: There is no protection for current types. If a 700mA module is fitted to control 350mA LEDs then damage is likely to result.

The product has an internal voltage and temperature sensor. Both these are reported via RDM. The temperature sensor monitors the internal motherboard temperature and will shut down the entire product if the value exceeds about 60°C. Normal operation resumes once the product has cooled.

The CP12 provides four inputs for connection of an external temperature sensor. The inputs are calibrated against the following resistive temperature sensor:

Epcos - B57621C103J62

This would normally be attached to the heatsink of the fixture LEDs. If the sensor exceeds 75°C +/- 5°C, the relevant module will shut down its 3 outputs. If temperature sensing is not required, no connection to the sensor inputs should be made.

If any of the temperature sensors (internal or external) registers a fault, the red LED indicator on the CP12 will blink (see chart below).

Operation & System DesignWith traditional low power LEDs, cable distances between the power supply and fixtures are limited as any voltage drop developed over the cable will cause the LED fixtures to appear as different colours or intensity. The voltage drop is larger when using smaller gauge cable and when more current is required.

In contrast, CP12 eliminates voltage drop developed over the cables with its unique control technology, providing excellent colour tracking between fixtures.

That said, certain guidelines must be observed for good performance. There are several variables that need to be taken into account when designing a system:

y Number of LEDs in series within a fixture

y Vf of the LEDs and total Vf (where Vf denotes the forward voltage characteristic of an LED, i.e. the voltage dropped over the LED, which is manufacturer specified).

y Maximum voltage drop across the cable

y PSU output voltage

y Temperature of the modules

The following table summarises the recommended PSUs for a variety of common situations.

When modules greater than 350mA are used and the PSU voltage greatly exceeds the total Vf, the CP12 must be de-rated. Please see the duty cycle chart below as an example, based on Vf = 4 V.
