TOUR DE NEBRASKA BICYCLISTS Nearly 200 bicycle riders, participating in the Tour de Nebraska, stopped in Campbell, NE, for their noon meal on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Their 5-day ride had started in Doniphan on Wednesday, June 19, with 221 registered bicyclists. That first day they traveled 62 miles north to Loup City. The second day they rode 67 miles north to Callaway, followed with a 76 mile ride on Friday to Holdrege. On Saturday, June 22, after breakfast served in Holdrege, they set off to morning breaks in Wilcox, Hildreth, and Upland, before arriving in Campbell for their noon meal. The Campbell Area Foundation and the Campbell Chamber of Commerce sponsored the meal, with grilling services provided by the Campbell Fire Department. Leaving Campbell they stopped for a break with the Bladen Girl Scouts hosting a snack at the Junction ofHWY 281 and HWY 4. Their day's trip of 59 miles ended in Blue Hill where they enjoyed their Tour de Nebraska Awards Banquet. On Sunday, June 23, they rode a short 42 miles back to Doniphan where they voted for the Favorite Host Town and Favorite Rest Stop, and said their good-byes for another year. Rich and Susan Rodenburg, of Lincoln, NE, have been the organizers for the annual bicycle pilgrimage for the past 28 years. All routes are on paved roads which are selected for safety and lower traffic counts. The Rodenburgs warn the riders that "Nebraska weather can be finicky, so be prepared for anything. WARNING-HEADWINDS are likely-and make for great survival stories." That was truly the case for this year's ride, as some reported that riding with high winds is worse than riding in the mountains. The Campbell hosts enjoyed visiting with the riders, and wished them well for the remainder of their journey.
