Cluster Office Update

Back in 2017 when we were discussing changes to the weekend Mass schedule, the Task Force advised that we have a main office to make the cluster manageable for one priest. I wanted to give anupdate on where we are with the new cluster office. But first, below is an abbreviated timeline of the cluster office building project to this point.

It was about a year ago on March 15, 2018 that I announced the location of the cluster office at Our Lady of Peace due to more space and ease of accessibility. Soon after announcing the location of the cluster office, I began discussions with the leadership of the adoration chapel to see about including an adoration chapel in the cluster office building. On April 24, 2018 I had an open meeting where I presented a floor plan with a 1,000 square foot addition to the Our Lady of Peace rectory. The addition included a new adoration chapel, a chapel foyer, storage space and a restroom. On June 3, I wrote in the bulletin that I formed a building committee with representation from all three parishes to help me navigate the construction phase. On June 14, I met with the diocesan building committee to get approval on the design of the renovation and addition. On October 2, we received bids from three contractors. The lowest bid was around $450,000. The higher cost was due in part to the 1,000 square foot addition.

Because the cost was too high, I simplified the design by cutting out the 1,000 square foot addition and fitting a chapel and office in the current structure of the Our Lady of Peace rectory. OnFebruary 5, 2019, we received bids on this second design from two contractors. The bids were around $260,000. On February 21, I met with the building committee and learned that the higher cost was due to bringing the residential building up to commercial code standards which included major work in duct work, lighting, and rewiring the house. At this meeting, we decided that the cost was too high. We will be investigating if we can make other changes to bring down the costs.

Here are a two points about this project. First, I don’t want to force this building project if the cost is too high. I’m aware that an expensive building project can be a sore spot for a parish. Second, even though the cluster staff has been working together in the OLOP admin building since September 2018, this building project is still worth pursuing for many reasons: the current space is too small for our staff; I can’t meet many parishioners in my office on the second floor because of the stairs; I still hit my head on door frames; the plumbing, central heating/AC and electrical system are showing their age. Thank you for your patience as I continue to look for a solution for a new cluster office.

Peace,Fr. Matthew

The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards..
