Modern day Brazil, but lost in time. Cristovam, a native Black man from the rural North, moves to a former Austrian colony in the South to work in a milk factory. Confronted with xenophobic conservative people, he feels isolated and estranged from the white world.
He discovers an abandoned house, filled with objects and memorabilia reminding him of his origins. He settles in, reconnecting with his roots. As if this memory house were alive, more objects start to appear. Slowly, Cristovam begins a metamorphosis.
For his feature debut, director João Paulo Miranda Maria uses spiritual and fantastical story-telling to encapsulate the social and racial tensions of modern day Brazil.
Memory House is the only Latin American film under the Cannes 2020 Official Selection Label.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT The surreal invasion of the invisible into the visible has always been present in my films.Different times and dimensions meet within one another in the same scene.
Cristovam seeks his origins, finding traces of his ancestry. The figure of the old black man is mythical in Brazilian popular culture, as a spiritual presence for the humblest. The visual effects in the movie, especially those on Cristovam’s face, with his skin and soul marked by age, are a projection of strength coming from his distant ancestors, an embodiment of the past, with a spiritual dimension.
Facing a conservative society, he witnesses the intolerance and prejudices of the past shaping current politicians, businessmen and real separatist movements. There is a distinct division in Brazilian society between a richer South, identifying with its European origins, and a poorer North, populated by descendants of African slaves and Indigenous tribes.
The film portrays the revolutionary figure of the Northern man who incarnates the spirit of the “Boiadeiro” (Brazilian cowboy). Cristovam seeks revenge to exculpate his sins as he feels responsible for an intolerant society. Through the abandoned house, he connects with his remote past, to animals and his deity, and transforms into a both a bull and a cowboy. He is empowered to make his final, great gesture.

A perfect blend of comedy and drama, Babyteeth is a magnificent portrayal of love, life, death and everything in between.
When seriously ill teenager Milla falls madly in love with smalltime drug dealer Moses, it’s her parents’ worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla soon shows everyone in her orbit - her parents, Moses, a sensitive music teacher, a budding child violinist, and a disarmingly honest pregnant neighbour - how to live like you have nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life. Babyteeth joyously explores how good it is not to be dead yet and how far we will go for love.

Death of a Ladies’ Manfrom the producers of BROOKLYN, ONCE and CHICAGO
Samuel O’Shea, a university professor of poetry, exuberant womanizer and enthusiastic drinker has seen better days. His second marriage is ending, and his wife and children are at their wits’ end with him. More disturbingly, he has begun seeing things: Frankenstein sidles up to the bar and strangers sing and dance to Leonard Cohen tunes. His much-missed father, who died when Samuel was just a boy, pops up for chats. At first Samuel thinks it could be the drink, or perhaps he’s just crazy or over-imaginative, but then learns he is gravely ill. Reflecting on the life he has lived, Samuel retreats to his family shack in remote Ireland, where he begins work on that great novel he always meant to write, and generally take stock. Surprisingly, or not, he meets and falls in love with a woman, who is full the unexpected. All this leads Samuel to an utterly unforeseeable happy ending.

The original screenplay, written by Cronenberg, follows James Foster, an uninspired writer and his wife, Em, on their all-inclusive vacation on the picturesque island of Li Tolqa. Befriended by the glamorous Gabi and Alban, the couples enjoy a forbidden picnic in the off limits Li Tolqan countryside that takes a sinister turn: the accidental fatality of a farmer leads to a death sentence for James. James can escape the verdict of local justice, but the uncanny mechanism that will ensure his survival also reveals a perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.

Creative? Why are We / Are We Not
The movie is a sequel to Vaske’s “Why Are We Creative”. While the first film concentrates on the promoters and sponsors of creativity, the new film unveils the true killers of creativity. It’s an exploration of the toxic circumstances that act as beta blockers to ideas in all the various creative disciplines.
The movie will follow director Hermann Vaske and his sidekick Michael Madsen on their mission to unmask and identify the idea killers. Together they analyze what screws up creativity in order to identify the villains, from self-censorship to anxiety, from distraction to bureaucracy. The assassins of creativity are many and they are lurking everywhere. And oddly, our reasons for not being creative are often very creative indeed…
As Vaske says: “In an age of uncertainty, where only creativity can help to solve the problems of the world, simply encouraging creativity is not enough. Only when we know where the enemy stands will we be able to avoid the beta blockers of creativity.”
