I punched rebuild into the Stuff search engine today;

it wasnt a pretty sight.

Christchurch rebuild: a city stalled, Christchurch rebuild hampered by

government, Rebuild friction rises to surface and Is the sun setting on the

rebuild? were my top options. Where did it all go wrong? It was all trucking

along nicely at least thats what I thought. So when I was asked recently,

as editor of Canterbury Rebuild Magazine, how do you think the rebuild is

going? my reply was well, the numbers are looking good much to the

shock of the enquirer. And I stand by that. Insurers involved in the

Canterbury residential rebuild have settled almost 60 percent of all

earthquake out of scope and over cap dwelling claims.

The residential red zone an area four times the size of Hagley Park

involved more than 7300 flat land properties. More than half of these homes

have been removed and the vast majority of former homeowners have

accepted the Crowns offer. And more than 53,000 home repairs have been

completed under the EQC-managed Canterbury Home Repair Programme

with Fletcher EQR thats two-thirds of the damaged homes EQC is

responsible for. While some may accuse me of sticking my head in the sand,

or the liquefaction so to speak, I choose to call it optimism. Theres certainly

positive stories out there and I for one intend to continue hunting them out.

Because, although a big chunk of our land is severely damaged, that

doesnt mean we cant devise new and cooler ways to use it. Jump on our

In November 2012 the Energy

Efficiency and Conservation Authority

(EECA) introduced a standard so that

luminaires (or light fittings) can be

Energy Star rated. The standard is

based on internationally recognised

criteria. Only New Zealands most

energy efficient products and

appliances qualify for this Energy Star

The changing face

of construction companies

Construction companies have had to

raise their skill set quickly to a level

not seen before in New Zealand in

order to cope with post-quake issues. They

have had to find solutions to problems,

develop greater communication with

designers and insurance companies and

ensure a solid paper trail so that all those

involved in a rebuild or repair are seamlessly

in agreement.
