HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However,

fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the follow-ing words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and be-cause of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…" The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m. The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and

Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and

Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: There-fore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holi-day—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Later that same year, on October 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which stated: "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible." The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20th, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans service organizations and the American people. Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restora-tion of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

THANKSGIVING DAY

Koinonia November & December 2015 7

On this Thanksgiving Day we want to take note that before passing out food; Jesus gave thanks. His thanks is in fact, a prominent part of the story; John tells us this twice. The Bible tells us that after the five small loaves and two fish were given Him, Jesus "took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted" (John 6: 11). Even more striking is John's account of the next day. John tells us that, in 6:23 ... some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. In reminding us of Jesus' miracle, the Gospel writer wants to make sure we realize it happened after Jesus had given thanks. Why did Jesus do this? Why did He give thanks to God the Father? Jesus gave thanks because He could see beyond the material to the spiritual. Jesus gave thanks because He could see beyond the bread and fish to the God, Who provided the bread and fish. To Jesus, even the smallest morsel of food was not trivial but pointed back to its Maker and Giver. This is true not only for bread and fish but for every good thing that we might enjoy. All things point beyond themselves to their Maker and Giver. By giving thanks, Jesus shows us the intimate connection between the spiritual and the material. Why did Jesus do this? Why did He give thanks to God the Father? The second answer we can give is that in giving thanks Jesus was making the ordi-nary sacred. It wasn't just bread and fish in His hands. On Thanksgiving Day, it isn't just a piece of pumpkin pie or turkey on your fork. It isn't just a computer on your desk or a car in your garage. After you have given thanks it is something holy, sacred, a gift from God Most High. On this Thanksgiving Day we want to give thanks. On this Thanksgiving Day we want to join the material world to the spiritual. On this Thanksgiving Day we want to dedicate to God what has been given to us. Like Jesus we want to give thanks. There are times, of course, when we all are tempted to feel ungrateful. At such times it is good for us to contemplate the good things God has done for us. May I offer this suggestion: write on a card small enough to fit into your wallet, 10 great things God has done for you. Then, whenever you are tempted to feel ungrateful, pull out that card and start thinking about the mercies you have written down. By thinking about God's past provision, you'll be encouraged to trust in His power to provide and protect in the present. Let us be like Jesus and give thanks. Let us give thanks realizing that this joins the material to the spiritual. Let us give thanks realizing this makes the profane sacred and dedicates it to the service of God. Let us give thanks to God for His many blessings.

WISHING YOU A HAPPY

AND BLESSED THANKSGIVING!

O Πορφύριο

2 Δεκεμβρίου

St. Porphyrios, the Elder December 2

St. Porphyrios (Bairaktaris) the Kapsokalyvite

Born: February 7, 1906

Reposed: December 2,1991 Canonized: November 27, 2013 Feast Day: December 2

On December 1, 2013, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Elder Porphyrios of Mount Athos, Greece was glorified (of which our own Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh was part of) . St. Porphyrios is one of a number of contemporary holy men who sought God on the Holy Mount of Mount Athos and were filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Mount Athos is a peninsula in northeastern Greece that is called “The Garden of the Theotokos.” This sacred ground has been reserved for the practice of the monastic life for over 1,000 years and is the home of 20 major monaster-ies and numerous small sketes and hermitages. This new saint of our Orthodox Church was born on February 7, 1906 in Greece and was baptized with the name of Evangelos. His parents were poor but pious farmers, his father serving as the village chantor who at times chanted the services with St. Nectarios. Due to their poverty, the Elder’s father was forced to immigrate to America to work on the construction of the Panama Canal. The young Evangelos only attended the village school for two years, starting work at a young age first in a coal mine and later in a grocery store in order to help support his family. Under the influence of his pious parents and from reading the Lives of the Saints, young Evangelos was determined to follow the examples of these holy saints. At the age of 15 he set off for Mount Athos to devote himself to the monastic life, living at the Skete of Kafso-kalivia. There, under the guidance of the elders in the monastic life, Evangelos devoted himself to prayer, fasting, and struggle against the sinful passions. He immersed himself in the liturgical services of the Church which he participated in for hours each day, learning many of the prayers and hymns by heart. With only two years of formal education, the Bible and the services of the Church became his tutors. Young Evangelos was eventually tonsured a monk and given the name Nikitas. While still a teenager, Nikitas was blessed to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. He was able “to see” people who were arriving at the monastery while they were still a long distance away. He was able to bring God’s healing to people with a touch. The hidden thoughts of people were revealed to him. He was able to see the past, the present and the future at the same time. He confessed these experiences to his spiritual father who advised to him to be cautious about this gift and to tell no one. The experienced monk knew well the warning of St. Paul that “Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11) meaning that mystical experiences and visions can be temptations of the devil to lead a person into pride and delusion. By the age of 19, Nikitas’ health problems forced his elders to move him to less remote monastery: the Monastery Lefkon of St. Haralambos. There at the age of 21 he was ordained to the diaconate and the priesthood and given the name Porphyrios. At this monastery and in several parishes, he functioned as a spiritual father hearing confessions often for hours each day. His spiritual gift of discernment, the ability to read the hearts of those who came to him, led many to genuine repentance and a new life.

Hospital Chaplain

With the outbreak of World War II, Father Porphyrios was assigned to the Athens Polyclinic in the heart of the city. Here he served the sick for thirty years, making his rounds through the hospital wards, celebrating the sacraments, praying with and guiding the sick.

In February, 1970 he retired from his position as hospital chaplain and began work on his lifelong dream: to estab-lish a monastery in which his pious spiritual daughters could completely devote themselves to the Lord.

In 1981 the Holy Convent of the Transfiguration of our Savior was formally established and it was here that the Elder began to live.

As he advanced his years, Elder Porphyrios suffered from numerous health challenges: kidney disease, heart attack, loss of vision and in 1987 becoming completely blind.

Knowing that his end was nearing his one desire was to return once more to his little hut on the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos. After receiving Holy Confession and the Holy Eucharist, the Elder departed this life on December, 2, 1991.

STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY DECEMBER 6, 2015

tFr. Nicholas V. Gamvas

Koinonia November & December 2015 11

Celebrating the offering is a spiritual act of worship every believer can actively participate in each week. Giving becomes a celebration when the believer discovers the joy of generosity, which grows out of God's grace.

“Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” (1 Corinthians 4:2).

Generosity is defined as “readiness or willingness to give.” No one embodied the willingness to give more than our founders. They lived modestly and gave generously. They made sure that the early groups of Greek Orthodox understood the importance of generosity and helping those in need. Saint John Chrysostom, encourages us to “employ whatever God has entrusted us with, in doing good, all possible good, in every possible kind and degree to the household of faith, to all humankind!”

“Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8)

God’s economy is one of abundance rather than scarcity. Because all creation has its origin and destiny in God, there is always enough when the resources are appropriately shared. When treated as an expression of grace, gifts multiply and are as inexhaustible as the grace of God who is their source.

Stewardship, then, is derived from God’s very being and mission and God’s invitation to share in the divine nature and mission. It is our “way of being in the world” as beloved children of a gifting God. It, therefore, encompasses all life and must not be reduced to a fund raising campaign on behalf of institutions, religious or otherwise.

It is a way of life and not mere rhetoric for motivating charitable contributions. God has a prior claim on everything and not just that which we label as “tithe.” The popular notion that we acquire as much as possible and then give to God out of what is left over after our wants and needs are fulfilled. Stewardship is derived from God’s ownership of everything and our invitation to be in the world as recipients and means of grace.

Let us give freely of our Time, Talents, and Treasures!

God has given us everything (James 1:17). He gave His Son to provide for our salvation. He has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Eph. 1:3). He “richly supplies us with all things to enjoy” (1 Tim. 6:17). Because He has given so abundantly to us, we should respond by giving generously back to Him. Amen!

PLEASE BRING YOUR 2016 PLEDGE CARD ON THIS DAY OR MAIL/DELIVER IT TO THE CHURCH OFFICE BEFOREHAND.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTFULNESS AND GENEROSITY!

December Pastoral Message

†Fr. Nicholas V. Gamvas

THE HOLY NATIVITY OF OUR LORD

12 Koinonia November & December 2015

From the 15th November of every year, the Orthodox Churches commence the ‘Christmas fast.’ This fast is also known as the ‘fast of St. Philip because it is immediately preceded by the feast day of this apostle. This time of preparation also corresponds to the Roman Advent. We do not know precisely at what date the celebration of Advent was introduced into the Church. However, early Christian docu-ments testify to the fact that only towards the end of the fourth century was the Nativity of Christ cele-brated on the 25th December and only by some since others celebrated Christmas on the 6th January. The first sign of a Christmas celebration comes from Egypt. Clement of Alexandria (ca 200) mentions that certain Egyptians commemorated the birth of Christ on 20th May. In the first part of the fourth century, the constitutions of the Church of Alexandria laid down that the 6th January was both the feast of the Nativity and the Epiphany of Christ. Therefore we know for certain that in the early Christian centuries Christmas and Theophany (which is celebrated today on the 6th January and marks the baptism of Jesus) were celebrated together. For this reason, liturgically speaking, the period from Christmas to Theophany is considered to be one continuous day of celebration marking the coming of Christ into the world. From the sermons of St. Gregory of Nyssa we know that in 380 AD the faithful in Cappadocia cele-brated Christmas on the 25th December. It is also known that, contrary to this practice, the Church of Jerusalem did not adhere to the date of the 25th December even up to the sixth century. We know for certain that in 385 AD, when Etheria had visited the city of Jerusalem, the festival of Christmas had not yet been accepted into its liturgical calendar. In Antioch the celebration of Christmas was introduced by St John of Chrysostom around 386AD. Modern scholarship also contends that Christmas was introduced to Constantinople between 398AD to 402AD by St John Chrysostom. From 354 AD Christmas began to be celebrated in Rome. However the Council of Saragossa in Spain still ignored Christmas in 380, and St Augustine, in the fifth century omitted it from a list of the major feasts, which he himself drew up. Christmas nevertheless soon began to be recognized in the liturgical calendar of the universal Church. In reflecting upon the introduction of the feast day of Christmas into the liturgical calendar, the first claim would be that the reason why 25th December was chosen for the celebration of Christ's birth is not that this is the actual day in which this historical birth took place. Rather there are two reasons why this day was chosen. The first is that Christmas was chosen as the feast day for this celebration because the Church wanted to adapt and ‘Christianise’ certain pagan feasts which were celebrated around that date, such as the birth of Dionysius at Delphi, the Saturnalia (December 1st - 23rd), and above all the Natalis Invicti (the feast of the Invincible sun) celebrated on the 25th December itself. Many Fathers of the Church, most notably St Cyprian of Carthage, declared that this ‘anniversary of the invincible’ was

realized in the birth of Jesus, the only invincible One and the Sun of Justice. Christ was the only Invinci-ble Sun who by His birth illuminated the world and inaugurated the dawn of a new age. It is for this reason that the dismissal hymn refers to Christ as the "sun of righteousness" since He is the true sun shining on the world. Therefore the 25th December was chosen in order to transform a pagan festival into a Christian one. The second reason why the 25th December was chosen for Christmas is that the day of Christ’s birth was made to depend on the date of the conception of Jesus, which is celebrated on 25th March (the Annunciation of the Theotokos). The reason why the date of the Annunciation was thought to be in March was because Jesus Christ was conceived, according to the Scriptures six months after St John the Baptist. From the New Testament, we would claim that St John the Baptism was conceived in Septem-ber. The reason this can be inferred is that the announcement to Zacharias, the father of St John's the Baptist, of the birth of his son took place when Zacharias, as the high priest went into the sanctuary on the day of Expiation. And the feast day was believed to have taken place in the month of September. From all the above calculations we must nevertheless state that, even though they may seem logical are still historically unfounded as we actually do not know the actual day and month in which the Mes-siah was born. However what is important in all the above is not whether the exact day and year of Christ's birth is known but, quintessentially more important is the importance of this event. All people, whether they affirm the importance of the Christian meaning of Christmas or not would still agree that it is an event that is celebrated. The fact that he meaning of Christmas is summed up in a single verse in the Bible. "She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (Mt 1:21). In Hebrew the name of Jesus is Yeshua, and that means "God saves" or "God is salvation". Therefore the birth of Christ commemorates not simply the birth of a religious genius or an inspired prophet but the Lord and Savior of life. The meaning of Christmas is summed up in Christ's coming into the world as God, taking on our human form so that we could take on the form of God. Christ came, and as the sec-ond Adam recapitulated or reconciled life and history into an intimate relationship between Creator and creature, between eternity and time. Christ took on our bodies which decay and grow old day by day and through the body conquered death. Therefore in essence Christmas is the message about God's victory over death and His gift of eternal life to the entire created order.

Q: The mind is a powerful force. It can enslave us or empower us. It can plunge us into the depths of misery or take us to the heights of ecstasy. Father Nick, how can I cope and use it wisely? I feel that I am a prisoner of “mental slavery.”

(Obviously I cannot put my name to this, I feel that I will be judged, although I believe many people our in the same situation of “mental slavery.” Please share a perspective especially during the up and coming Holidays. Thank you ~ Anonymous)

A: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” - Matthew 6:33

“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,

and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - John 8:31-32

“The biggest enemy you have to deal with is yourself. If there's no enemy within, then the enemy outside can do us no harm." - St. John Chrysostom

These limitations inevitably lead to many of us suffering from the "Baby Elephant syndrome.” The story is told how elephants are trained. When an elephant living in captivity and is still a baby, it is tied to a tree with a chain or rope nightly. The baby elephant tries with all its might to break the rope but it isn’t strong enough to do so. It tries and fails many times until realizing its efforts are futile, it finally gives up and stops attempting for the rest of its life. Later, when the elephant is fully grown, it can be tied to a small tree with a thin rope and could easily free itself by breaking the rope or uprooting the tree but because its mind has been conditioned by its past experiences, it does-n’t even make the slightest attempt to break free. This powerful animal has confined its present abilities by the limi-tations of past experiences hence, the "Baby Elephant Syndrome."

Human beings are similar to the elephant except for one thing, we can choose not to accept the false boundaries created by the others or the past.

“The mind is a powerful force. It can enslave us or empower us. It can plunge us into the depths of misery or take us to the heights of ecstasy. Learn to use is wisely." - Carl Jung

Here are 7 tips I have found useful to break the chains that hold us captive, or in “mental slavery” as you say.

1. God First, and Believe in Yourself - You have to believe in yourself ultimately. Always think big and dream big. Focus on your strengths and work on developing your shortfalls. Don’t compare yourself to others and don’t let circumstances dictate what you are capable of achieving.

"Believe in yourself and there will come a day when others will have no choice but to believe with you.” - Paul Tournier

2. Work Hard - Do what you can do. Don't waste time feeling sorry for yourself. Take responsibility for where you are. Stop feeling like you’re owed. In life, there are no handouts. If you want something, you owe it to yourself to go out and get it. Nothing worth having comes easy.

“Determination and perseverance move the world; thinking that others will do it for you is a sure way to fail.” - Carl Jung

3. Be Positive - Turn negatives into positives and make it a growing experiencing. Don’t dwell on others opinions of you or take things personally. Don’t blame and harbor toxic emotions. It will only hold you back. Let it add fuel to the fire. Envision the future and maintain your focus.

“As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom. I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison inside myself.” - Nelson Mandela Continued next page

4. Never Give Up - Be confident. Ask for what you want. Purpose in your heart that you will keep fighting for your dreams. How many times will you try before you decide to give up? This is your dream and you have to protect it. I try every door until I have exhausted all options and yet I don’t give up. Once there is a will, there is always way and I am determined to find it!

"You've only got three choices in life: Give up, give in, or give it all you've got. —Unknown

5. Be Patient - For everything there is a time and season. The waiting period can be the most difficult but it's important to not let doubt and fear creep in.

“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” - Ecclesiastes 3:1

6. Have a Strong Support Network - You can’t do it alone. There are days when it becomes too much for you. You may need a little help to get back up.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” - Philippians 4:13

7. Most Importantly, Have Faith In God - that things will work out. Some things are out of our control. Trust that God will take us through those difficult moments and that gives us peace even when things don't go our way.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God." - Ephesians 2:8

God is in control! “Let go and let God.”

This is your life! Don’t let anyone else write your story. Take back the pen and make a great ending!

“But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” - Matthew 19:26 Q: What happened to the icon of the Holy Napkin - The Holy Mandylion ? ~ Rev. Dr. Deacon Keric Shiepis

A: “The Transfer from Edessa to Constantinople of the Icon of our Lord Jesus Christ Not-Made-by-Hands occurred in the year 944.” Eusebius, in his HISTORY OF THE CHURCH (I:13).

The icon of the Holy Mandylion ( mandelion = towel, kerchief ) is an unfamiliar icon to many. For our Church, however, it is the basic image of Christ, from which all other Magisterial icons are derived. Given that this image has been widely accepted as being non-handmade, it bears an immense importance for orthodox hagiography. This icon is celebrated on the 16 th of August. Specifically, as mentioned in the Monthly Book of Feasts = The August Menaion. The Orthodox Church celebrates this day the "translation", the transfer of the non-handmade image of our Lord Jesus Christ - the Holy Mandylion - from Edessa of Mesopotamia to Constantinople

According to Christian tradition, the Image of Edessa was a holy relic consisting of a square or rectangle of cloth upon which a miraculous image of the face of Jesus was imprinted — the first icon "image" In Eastern Orthodoxy.

The Mandylion remained under Imperial protection in Constantinople until the Crusaders sacked the city in 1204 and carried off many of its treasures to Western Europe.

Similarly, it is thought that the Shroud of Turin disappeared from Constantinople in 1204, when Crusaders looted the city. According to another theory, crusaders ran off with it during their rule at Constantinople (1204-1261), but the ship on which the sacred object was taken, perished in the waters of the Sea of Marmora is a major theory.

Q. What is the location of the Garden of Eden? ~ Penny Ralles

A: The only thing the Bible tells us concerning the Garden of Eden’s location is found in Genesis 2:10-14, “A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold… The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.” The exact identities of the Pishon and Gihon Rivers are unknown, but the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are well known.

If the Tigris and Euphrates mentioned are the same rivers by those names today, that would put the Garden of Eden somewhere in the Middle East, likely in Iraq. However, even a small local flood can change the course of a river, and the Flood of Noah’s day was more than a localized flood. The Deluge completely changed the topography of the earth. Because of this, the original location of the Tigris and Euphrates is uncertain. It could be that the modern rivers called the Tigris and Euphrates are simply named after those associated with Eden, in the same way that Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is named after the town in Judea.

If the Middle East region is where the Garden of Eden was, and if crude oil is, as most scientists believe, primarily decayed vegetation and animal matter, then it stands to reason that the Middle East is where we would find the greatest oil deposits. Many people speculate that the vast stores of oil in the Middle East are the result of the decomposition of Earth’s most lush organic materials in the Garden of Eden. While the oil in the Middle East could be the dregs of Eden, but those who promote such ideas are simply theorizing.

People have searched for the Garden of Eden for centuries to no avail. There are various spots claimed as the original location of Eden, but no one can be sure. What happened to the Garden of Eden? The Bible does not specifically say. It is likely that the Garden was completely destroyed in the Flood.

Q: Is the Orthodox Church based on the Bible? ~ Laurie

A: The Holy Bible is a foundation for the Christian Church, yet it is this very foundation that often becomes a reason for Christians to disagree even on some of the fundamental of Christian doctrines. Rather than see the Bible as something as separate from the Church, it should be seen together with the Church – inseparably tied with it.

This question is irrelevant, because it presupposes that the Bible can somehow be seen as relevant outside the Church; If it is truly the Church, founded by Christ and built on the Holy Tradition that has been handed down by him to his Apostles, and from them to their succes-sors to the present day, then it is by definition based upon the Holy Bible.

Likewise, if the Bible is seen as Holy Scripture containing within it a record of the history of God’s interaction with His creation, and a book that has come out of the Church in its development and its response to a loving God, then the Bible is the ‘Book of His Church’! The bible is ultimately only understood and interpreted by God, and it is by His grace, through the Holy Tradition that He has given to His Church, that we too can understand it and interpret it.

Q: Should a Christian read the Old Testament? ~ Niki K.

A: YES And HERE’S WHY: The Old Testament is a name given to the 39 books of the Holy Bible that precede the New Testa-ment. They are the Hebrew or Jewish Scriptures – the Holy Book of the people of Israel that were written generally in He-brew, the language of Ancient Israel. In Judaism, the Old Testament was divided into three basic groups, The Law, the Prophets and the Writings.

Later on about 300 years or so before Christ, they were translated into Greek, for the Greek speaking Jews living around Egypt, called the Septuagint. This is the version used in our Churches. It had dealt with the history, literature and song of the People of God at the time of the Patriarchs, Moses, King David and the Prophets, before Christ.

The Books of the Bible were complied and /or redacted by different authors over a long period of time. Not long after the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, all the books of the Bible were finally collected into an official Canon. It included these 39 books which came to be known as the Old Testament, along with the 27 books of the New Testament.

Authoritative figures like St Athanasius the Great included all 39 books of the Old Testament in their official lists and this became the norm in all the Churches. (18 extra books called the Apocrypha or Deuterocanonical were also included.) They were therefore recognised together as the inspired Word of God and formed a major part of the Holy Scriptures in the Christian Church.

Much of the New Testament presupposes the history and religion of the Old Testament and without it, the New Testament is largely incomprehensible. Jesus often quoted from the Old Testament, along with St. Paul, St Peter, St. John the Evan-gelist and other New Testament authors. A great deal of our theology, wisdom and morals concerning the nature of God, Man and Creation are based on the Old Testament. According to the Fathers of the Church the Old Testament, interpreted holistically, prefigures or points ahead to the events of the New. This is clearly seen for example in the Services of Holy Week in the Orthodox Church were many Old Testament passages from the Books of Jonah, Genesis, and the Prophets are read that prophesied or spoke about what would happen to Jesus, long before He walked the earth.

Much of our Liturgical texts and prayers are taken from the Old Testament especially the Psalms. Many readings from the Old Testament are heard on the Eve of Great Feast Days in the Services of Vespers, that help us under-stand the meaning of the Feast. In light of this, it is thus beneficial if not essential for Christians to read the Old Testament as a means of comprehending the nature of God’s dealings with human beings and in understanding His purpose for our salvation.

For the first-timer, the Bible in general can be quite bewildering. It is important to note that the Bible is unlike any other book in that it is made up of a library of separate books that have been compiled by differ-ent authors over many centuries. So reading it cover to cover may not be very helpful at first. It is highly advisable that a person attends a Bible study group and can answer questions and offer guidance.

Attending Church and the services also helps us hear the Word of God in the context of worship. It is also advisable to acquire a good Study Bible – which is basically the Holy Bible with Study Notes that helps introduce each book of the Bible in context.

CHRISTMAS

The Father's Greatest Gift to His Children

Once again the greatest season of the year is upon us. The Nativity of Christ is a feast of joy. It has also come to be a time of reflection, especially when we hear the angelic hymn of "peace on earth and good will toward men." It is very sad to think that there is no peace in the very land where the Prince of Peace was born of a Holy Virgin. In fact that part of the world is a battleground. In a sense the song of the angels on the hills of Bethlehem is a valid one for today: Peace on earth, that is, peace in the souls of all who love Christ and seek to follow Him. Peace comes to "men of good will." The precious peace of Christ is available, if men but will it. Christ is our peace. It is His continued Presence with us in our journey through this "battlefield" we call life, that sustains us. Do we really have the" Peace of Christ that surpasses all understanding" within us? As Orthodox Christians are we really good examples to our families, friends, co-workers, neighbors etc. of that peace, or do we just get sucked up into the void of the holiday season? The time is at hand yet once again for family gatherings, greetings and the exchange of gifts with friends and loved ones. Will we eat, drink and party to much and then complain about how we feel "stuffed" and "bloated" and hung over or will we reflect within ourselves how fortunate we are to have had a good meal and think about all of the people around the world who are starving, homeless, and freezing at the same time? Then when the season is over- now back to our old routine. Struggling, worry about tomorrow, figuring out how to pay for everything that we spent, our pettiness and the old grudges that we had with one another before the holiday season. Nothing seems to have changed. After 27 years of private practice, I have always asked my patients if they are ready for the Christmas season? Unfortunately the vast majority get caught up in the hustle and bustle, the commercialism, everything that has to be done. Every so often you find the person shines from within the true "Peace of Christ" who is excited about going to church first and foremost, spending time with The Lord and wishing Jesus a "happy birthday" and then the festivities come after wards. Not getting caught up in what he/she has to buy (standing in line for hours "black Friday" and the pushing and shoving and ill will that goes along with it) and where they have to be, and "oh those in laws" .." "I'll be glad when its over" syndromes. What does Jesus really think about all of this nonsense? We have to look to the Holy Bible for the answer. "For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16). Is that something we maybe just read or do we really comprehend that statement and take it to heart and change our life to reflect that message so that we may be shinning examples to those around us? Think for a moment how we feel when a loved one opens a gift from us that they really needed/wanted how excited they are, the joy that is in their faces. Now think for a moment the opposite of that, how we feel if they

care less about their gift and you can sense that they really don't like it and will probably never use it. Imagine how Jesus feels when we do not accept, disregard, minimize etc. His gift of salvation to us, especially what He endured for us. What kind of price tag can you put on that gift? Jesus loves us so much that He became like us in his humanity. He walked, talked ,laughed, cried , healed, ate, drank, celebrated etc. with us. He felt our pains, sorrows and our every emotion that we as humans ex-perience, and even all of our temptations that lead us to sin. He made it His number one priority to teach us and to raise us up again, restoring to us our original image and reuniting us with the Father. This was accom-plished through His Cross, Tomb and third day Resurrection from the dead, that we may have eternal life with Him. What greater gift could we possibly ever receive from anyone? All we have to do is to accept it and allow Jesus to live and guide our lives in willful submission to Him. When St. Paul contemplated the magnificent event of Christmas Day, he cried out: "Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift!"

I would like to close with a poem that I read that touched my heart from an unknown author.

"Ready for Christmas" she said with a sigh, as she gave the last touch to the gifts piled high Then wearily sat for a moment and read 'till soon, very soon, she was nodding her head.

Then quietly spoke a voice in her dream, "Ready for Christmas what do you mean?

Ready for Christmas, when only last week you wouldn't acknowledge your friend on the street? Ready for Christmas while holding a grudge? Perhaps you'd better let God be the judge."

She woke with a start and a cry of despair. "There's so little time and I've still to prepare,

O, Father, forgive me, I see what you mean!" To be ready means more than a house swept clean. Yes, more than giving of gifts and a tree, It's the heart that's swept clean that He wanted to see,

A heart that is free from rancor and sin, so be ready for Christmas and ready for Him."

Let us never forget…

Jesus is the reason

for the season!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Dear St. Haralambos Family: We thank you all for your attendance, time, effort and support in helping make the 2015 Canton Greek Fest the best festival our church as ever seen. Our over 100 volunteers helped make everyone feel welcomed, showing all attendees what the Greek word “filotimo” truly means. We are always looking for additional volunteers to help with this event. Any amount of time is appreciated. Please let any of us know if you’re interested. We thank Father Nick for his continued support and guidance and for his pre-Greek Fest prayers for great weather. We were blessed again this year with perfect weather for our event! Thank you to the St. Haralambos Hellenic Dancers for providing a wonderful display of our culture thru their traditional dances all three nights and to all the church organizations who worked together in their areas including indoor dining, outdoor dining, book store and the Marketplace. We look forward to seeing everyone interested in helping plan the 2016 Canton Greek Fest at the monthly planning meetings that will be announced in the Koinonia and the weekly bulletins and of course at the 2016 Canton Greek Fest June 2, 3 & 4, 2016. SUNDAY SCHOOL

32 Koinonia November & December 2015

We hope by now all parents have had an opportunity to meet and talk with your children’s teachers. We encourage you to continue bringing your children to Sunday School regularly and on time so that they may receive the full benefit of the religious education being provided to them. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and help in this area.

Also, please plan some time to sit and talk with your children about what they've discussed and learned each week. In order for their religious education to be effective, it is vitally important that we work together as parents and teachers toward the common goal of providing them with a strong foundation and knowledge of our Orthodox faith. Our office door is always open and we welcome your suggestions, questions, and/or concerns.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE will conclude Sunday, November 22nd: We are again sharing our blessings with those less fortunate through our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Your past generosity has made the Thanksgiving Holiday happy and fulfilling for many families. You can help again this year by bringing non-perishable food items each week between now and November 22nd. We continue to accept and are grateful for monetary donations from our parishioners to help toward the purchase of supplemental items (turkeys, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, dinner rolls, etc.)

DECEMBER ACTIVITIES include the following:

Sunday, December 6th: Saint Nicholas Gift Project Continuing in the spirit of Saint Nicholas by giving to the poor, this year we are again purchasing gifts for children within the Canton Community who can benefit from our donations. Please send a wrapped gift for a child the same age and gender as your child. Be sure to mark the package “For a Boy/Girl, age ___ ). We hope we can count on your support once again this year toward this special outreach project. Thank you.

Sunday, December 20: Christmas parties in classrooms with a special visit from Santa Claus.

Sunday, December 27: Family Worship Sunday - No Classes

Classes will resume on Sunday, January 3, 2016

Thank you for your continued support of our Sunday School as well as all our activities/projects and God bless! May our Lord bless our entire Saint Haralambos family with His Peace this Holy Season and always. Warmest wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving, a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year.

Respectfully in His Name, Mary Griveas

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

AGAPE FOR EDUCATION:

HEARTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD 10-03-2015

ITEMS NEEDED:

Have you ever had a day when you just needed a hug? I have. All of us need a hug or need to hug someone at one time or another in our lives. Such a small action can have so many positive effects such as:

1. Being loved and accepted for who you are. 2. Giving you courage to face the present day. 3. Adding a “twinkle” to your eyes and a “hop and skip” to your walk. 4. Having a safe haven and someone to trust. 5. Showing “you are welcome” and there is joy in your presence. 6. Expressing concern, compassion, understanding for your present circumstances. 7. Exhibition of affection, even making you feel worthy and cherished, BUT most

of all a hug conveys LOVE!

Many times we have watched a child convey love when he or she is playing alone. He or she will often “hug” their favorite stuffed animal, animals, or doll. Maybe we cannot physically “hug” our Madge Youtz children, but what we CAN do is give them something to HUG this Christmas season! This is why “Hugables for Christ” is so important. This year, Madge Youtz’s enrollment is almost 390 children! We have a lot of work to do. Not only do we supply every student at Madge Youtz, but also the entire YWCA Pre-school. Together both total 500 students. Then we also need other “Hugables” for the Salvation Army. We have a good start of 175 stuffed animals which we have tagged and bagged. Deadline for stuffed animals is St Nicholas Sunday, December 6, 2015. Now that the cold weather is here, we will also be needing NEW and GENTLY USED hats, mittens, and scarves. Those we will collect through February 2016. And don’t forget Valentine’s Day candy for Madge Youtz School. I have also had a couple schools request tooth brushes and tooth paste. I’d say we have a lot to keep us busy. Thank you for you continued support throughout the year.

Remember, TODAY is the day of Salvation,

TODAY is the day for Giving, and TODAY is the day for LOVING our fellow man!

Always in Christ,

Karen Lazoran, Project Coordinator

G.O.Y.A. PASTA DINNER ~ WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

A CHRISTMAS PRAYER

My God who has mercifully and patiently led me through this busy year, giving me more than I asked for or deserved,

grant me at this Christmas time, The Grace of our Lord Jesus,

“the Spirit of a Little Child” and enter my life and bless it.

Let duty become touched with beauty, and justice be forgotten in love. I pray for grace to bow myself to others’ needs.

Let my ears hear the cry of the needy, and my heart feel the Love of Your Greatness.

Give my hands strength not to do great things but to do small things graciously.

Let me accept kindness with humility. heal my wounds of misunderstanding, jealousy, or regret that scars my heart, and let the Christmas spirit touch my life

as cold winter is touched by the gentler days of spring.

And as the old year ends, and the New Year begins, grant me peace in my own heart;

that those I love and those I may help may have sweet joy and rest.

AMEN
