Board of Directors - Important!

Equine Foundation of Canada

We are now completing the Twenty-six year of the Equine Foundation, and during past

three years we have probably made more inroads into spreading the awareness of the

charity, than ever before. In going outside the Morgan breed, many horse enthusiasts of

not only other breeds, but also just horses, have contributed to EFC income in many ways.

This is most rewarding, but EFC is still a very small cog in a huge wheel of charities in

Canada. We have maintained a strong base of volunteers to organize fundraising events

and to spread the word, thus keeping our administrative costs to a minimum. It has been

most rewarding to any of the EFC representatives who have been fortunate enough to

have been able to visit one or more of the five Veterinary schools, to experience the

gratitude of the staff for whatever we have been able to help them with financially.

As you are aware, most of our funds have been raised dollar by dollar through organized

trail rides, auctions, raffles, etc; also from gifts to the Memorial Fund as well as for Special

Occasions. First we dealt in Fives and Ten Dollars. More recently we were dealing with

Hundreds of Dollars, and in the last year or two, a Thousand Dollars and more from an

event have made it possible for EFC to do even more for the health and welfare of the

horse in Canada. A year and a half ago a small estate of a few thousand dollars was left to

EFC by an old horseman. This has been kept in trust and portioned out to EFC as the need

has arisen. This gift came about from personal contact with the person.

More recently a very wonderful thing happened. When I was a gathering sponsor for our

trail ride near Leduc, I happened to meet an acquaintance that I knew had had Quarter

Horses in the past, so I asked for a sponsorship. After studying the EFC brochure, the

person requested I come to their home and discuss the matter. A few days later the visit

was made and I was presented with a cheque in the amount of One Hundred Thousand

Dollars ($100,000).

The donors have requested to remain anonymous. They have also requested that the monies be

divided as such: $30,000 to the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine; $20, 000 to the

Western College of Veterinary Medicine at Saskatoon; and $10,000 to each of the other three schools.

As this is receipted income, this takes care of the $80,000 we must spend in 2010. As you are aware,

we must spend 80% of our receipted income in the next year, and we also have other funds raised this

year to be dealt with later. Susan has invested the monies (not a great return these days), and has on

file a copy of a letter from the donors outlining their requests in regard to their gift. This all goes to

prove that we can make things happen. We just have to work at it and believe that we can make the

Equine Foundation even more known and accepted by the horse enthusiasts of our respective areas.
