The 15th consecutive 10km Big Walk will take place on Sunday, 2nd March in Green Point. The Big Walk is an extraordinarily special event this year for three reasons:

Firstly, it is the 15th anniver-sary and a decade and-a-half of consecutive Big Walk events through charity, fun and good health for all in the community.

Secondly, it is a commemora-tive event. The Big Walk is the first of its kind to dedicate an existing practice to the memory of the great South African leader who has made an indelible impression on the world. The 15th anniversary celebration will be highlighted by a special 15km commemo-rative Run/Walk which will commence at 6H00.

The Nelson Mandela Founda-tion has officially endorsed the commemorative aspect of the Big Walk and the organisers of the event are proud to announce that a percentage of the proceeds will be dedicated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

This gesture is not only unprecedented in itself, but it is also the first time that the Big Walk is paying tribute to a political leader.

Thirdly, the medal for partici-pating in this non-competitive family event will carry the impression of Nelson Mandela. This makes the medal a genu-ine collector’s item. A medal will be handed to every regis-tered walker with a valid race number finishing the walk.

From Talk Show host to CEO

We had the opportunity to interviewFaizal Sayed, the Talk show host and now also CEO of DeenTV.

Who is Faizal Sayed?

I am a down to earth, easy going young man who grew up in Cravenby Estate, Cape Town. I love the simple things in life and always try to uplift the oppressed.

When did you decide Media was the career you wanted to explore?

Strangely enough I never thought this would be my calling. I studied Science at University and like many other students I explored other avenues. This all came about when I was one of one thousand extra’s in a TV commercial. However I wanted to be on the other side of the camera as the producer.

Tell us about the Faizal Sayed’s Talk Show.

The Faizal Sayed talk show all began with my vision to use it as a platform on which I would be able to discuss both positive and negative issues within the community. It was a platform on which I could create change on an open platform. Faizal Sayed Talk Show is a diverse programme. We do not focus on any specific religious or ethnic group but on matters which concern everyone.

The role of Faizal Sayed in the Community?

I have a personal interest in the community and its people. Due to my active role in the commu-nity I have been contacted on many occasions by members needing assistance with simple issues and it is situations like these that I love helping with. I am currently involved with the St Joseph’s Childrens Home along with the Minis-ter of Health. This project aims to give St Joseph’s Home the much needed exposure and assistance. I not only have an interest in people but also animals and environmental issues. “I like being a voice for those who do not have a voice”.

Tell us about your family and any special person in your life.

My mother is the key person in my life and without her strength and prayer I would not have been where I am today. At this moment there is no special person in my life. This will probably be the case for some time as I build my career. Some advice to our youngsters, “A mother can never be replaced therefore cherish her”.

Who is your role model?

My role model in life was and still is no other than Nelson Mandela. I looked up to this great icon as he could ask for assistance from many in this world and people helped due to his trustworthy quality.

What are the future plans for Deen TV?

Deen TV is currently undergoing some changes not only on set but behind the scenes as well. Within the next two months it will be aired across 47 coun-tries. There are also some media conversions taking place where viewers will be able to download the Deen TV App on their android and smart phone.

Rumour has it that you have been appointed as the CEO of Deen TV. Is there any truth in this?

I have always served as Vice President and recently appointed as CEO. However this glorified title has not gotten to me. I still consider myself as the ordinary guy who grew up in Cravenby Estate.

Before our readers flip the page, Do you have some wise words to leave them with?

Yes, I would like to voice the following words to our youngsters, especially thosewho wish to make a career in the Media World – “You don’t get discovered by others, you need to discover yourself”

BlackByrdWho is Blackbyrd?Tamsyn: BlackByrd is a trio of 3 beautiful la-dies, Tarryn Lamb our lead singer and song-writer, Tamsyn Maker (me) I play guitar and do the backing vocals and I’m the dancer in the group. Axene also plays guitar and sings backing vocals.

Where does the name Blackbyrd come from?Tarryn: Our name was inspired by Paul Mc-Cartney’s song “Blackbyrd”. At the time, we were looking for a name that would describe something unique about us, and when I heard the lyrics, “take these broken wings and learn

afraid of. I love the name and I’m so happy we found it!

When and where was the group started?Tarryn: Our group started about 5 years ago. Tammy and I performed in a group called “Lavuvuzela”, we were a Pop band singing Bubblegum Pop and dancing around in skimpy

Then one day, we grew up and decided that we wanted to create music with more sub-

and all of us started learning to play the gui-tar. Axene joined us last year in May. We’ve been going from strength to strength breaking all sorts of barriers. We’ve had the honor of being the supporting acts for Mike and the Mechanics, Patricio Buanne and Jamiroquai.

Have you always enjoyed Music?Axene: I’ve always had a passion for music. I started singing at a very young age and it has played a very big role in my life and in the per-son that I have become.

What is the vision of the group?Tarryn: Our biggest ambition is to see how far around the world our music can reach. It really is so exciting and inspiring to hear how many people respond to our lyrics and musicality!

What kind of music do you sing and who is the target audience?Axene: It’s Pop with a Country leaning. We

music resonates with people of all ages. We sing about real issues and real emotions. Tar-ryn has the ability to convey all those emotions to our audiences. I think people don’t just hear our music, they also feel it.

Has the group been nominated for any awards? Tamsyn: We were nominated for 4 Sama awards for our debut album. Best adult con-temporary, best group, best producer and best engineer. Our producer, Marc Belieng won the award for Best Engineer for our dut album “Strong”.

your number one fan at home who knows and loves you for who you are outside of the spot-light, without make-up and fancy clothes.

Tamsyn: “glamorous lifestyle” , thats only when you get free things, we’re not there yet...hopefully soon!

Can we expect a new release soon? Tarryn: We’re still promoting our debut album, of which we’ve enjoyed amazing success, as every single went to number one on various radio stations. Our latest single is called “Keep On”

What message do you have for our young up and coming singers?Axene: Nothing ever comes from slacking. No matter how many doors are slammed in your face or how many people try to walk all over you, you MUST keep working and keep having faith in your talent. Don’t forget there’s always room for improvement.

Blackbyrd can be seen performing at the K-Day Music Festival, you can also pick up their debut album “Strong” at any good music store.

Best advice ever given?Tarryn: Educate yourself in the business side of the music industry. Many artists, including myself once upon a time, got caught up in just being the performer. The reality is; your craft is your income and if you don’t know how the music business works and what your rights are

where people take advantage of your naivety.

Tell us a bit about your family life and upbringing Tarryn: I am from Ocean View. Growing up, I was surrounded with a lot of love and really caring people, from my Aunty meisie, our Next

hair, to “baai”, the man at the sweet shop, who I used to loaf an extra sweet from.

Tamsyn: I grew up in Wetton. I have a great loving and supportive Christian family. They al-ways allowed me to go for my dreams and try out new things in sports, academics and arts. When im not on stage or at home, I spend alot of time with friends and family like a typical 25 year old would.

How does your relationship with the opposite sex fit in with your glamourous lifestyle?Axene: You have to make time for the spe-cial people in your life. Having a boyfriend that supports your talent is great. It’s like having

The 8 Most Hated

1. BARBELL SQUATS

We recently conducted a poll. This involved my current clients, as well as a number of

former clients and athletes. Here are the most hated exercises, based on 76 respon- ses and listed from least to most reviled.

This is the king of all exercises. The bar sits on your upper back so there is no grip failure issue. The entire body is involved: the calves, the quads, the glutes, the abs, the low back, and the upper-body stabilizing muscles. It takes cast-iron testicles to squat properly and with extreme effort. It is analogous to your mother-in-law driving your 2014 Mercedes over a cliff into the ocean. You love it and you hate it, simultaneously.

2. DEADLIFTSoliciting feedback resulted in these comments: they suck, brutal move, I hate these, why do you make me do these? Any time you must lift a resistance from the ground - either heavy for a few reps orlighter for a maximum number of reps it requires extreme muscle involvement. The major muscles of the body that is, the back, buttocks, quadriceps, and hamstrings are activated throughout the set to the point of fatigue.

4. Close-Grip PulldownAn upper-body exercise ranked so high? I believe it being a long-range, large muscle-group activating (latissi-mus dorsi) exercise (if worked properly through a full range of motion) was the clincher. As a matter of personal opinion, I would have to agree here. This exercise is brutal if performed properly.

5. Bent-Over Row Considered uncomfortable to perform due to the bent-over position. The one-arm dumbbell row was particularly singled out because the bent-over position had to be maintained for each arm.

3. BURPEES or as one person called them, “Barfees”These are the essence of annoying and uncomfortable exercises. The act of long (standing) to short (crouched) to long (plank position) to short (crouched) back to a jump (standing) can be a tedious routine. Add to that all the various burpee variations (single leg, spread eagle, dumbbell, or dumbbell plank row) and it makes them even more disgusting. No matter how you slice it, burpees suck.

6. LEG PRESSThe uncomfortable nature of being jammed into a compact position to begin the exercise was not favor-able. Leg presses that commenced with the legs in the extended position garnered a bit more favorabil-ity. On top of that, my goal of pushing my trainees to the point of muscular fatigue was apparently not popular.

7. RUNNINGThis one surprised me. As an athlete, you need to run in some capacity to either get in shape or replicate sport skills. How do you expect to improve if you eschew sport-related running? Yes, it can be brutal, but it’s a fact of life. A head scratcher for me on this one as running should be.

8. STIFF-LEG DEADLIFT with barbell or dumbbells

Holding posture was listed as a pain in the ass, let alone the repetitive transition from upright to bent-over to upright to bent-over. The fact you have to think and focus made this exercise even more a pain.

Here is a statement that will be truly heretic to today’s “par-ent-industrial complex”: Conditional love is good! Like most things in life, unconditional and conditional love are neither good nor bad; it is what you do with them that makes them so.

I’m not talking about what we as parents feel; of course, we always love our children no matter what they do. But rather what children perceive, and I believe that they do perceive loss of love. They don’t know the difference between disap-proval and withheld love.

.

Give Your Children Conditional Love

Conditional love that is used to threaten or control your children is bad, for example, when you use what I call outcome love, in which -

encing your children. Rewarding your children—love is really the ultimate form of reward—regardless if their behavior robs them of one of their most important lessons, namely, that their actions have consequences. What more powerful inducement to good action is there for your children than their perceived threat of losing your love?

You can instill healthy values and behavior, such as respect, responsibility, compassion, and generosity, by giving praise—offering love—when your children demonstrate these and showing disapproval—withholding love—when your children don’t demonstrate these values.

Don’t Praise Your Children “Good job!” is the most common praise you hear parents giving kids. Yet, it is lazy and worthless praise. The reality is that children don’t need to be told “good job!” when they’ve done something well; it’s self-evident. The purpose of praise is to encourage children

that school project!”, so they see that their great effort is what led to their success.

Unfortunately, many parents have been misguided by the “self-esteem movement,” which has told them that the way to build their children’s self-esteem is to tell them how good they are at everything. But research has shown that students who are lavished with

-signments, and less willing to share their ideas.Children develop a sense of competence by experiencing success, not by being told they are successful.

Let Your Children FailFear of failure among children is an epidemic all over the worldtoday. At the heart of fear of failure is the belief that if children fail, bad things will happen, for example, they will disap-point their parents, experience embarrassment or shame, or feel worthless.

In a culture of “never good enough” and an economic land-

children failing.

Yet, by protecting your children from failure, you are mak-ing it less likely that they will succeed.

“Dangerous”Things ParentsShould Do toTheir Children

The reality is that the most successful people in all walks of life have failed frequently and monumentally on the way to success. Only by failing can your children learn essential life lessons, such as resilience, perseverance, and problem solving that will ultimately lead them to success.

We had the privilege of visiting Beitul-Ighsaan Welfare and Madrassa, situated in Kew-town, Athlone, a non govern-mental organisation (NGO).The Madrassa was founded in 2009 by Moulana Ighsaan and his wife. At that time there were 40 students all attending free of charge and the madrassa was not being funded in any way.

The rent became a problem and Moulana Ighsaan attempted to charge a minimal fee of R5 per student per week. This resulted in a decrease in attendance and caused Mou-lana Ighsaan to stop charging the students.

The number of students increased drastically once the fee was stopped and so did the rent which was in arrears, as Moulana Ighsaan was unable to pay it. Fortunately, a sponsor offered to pay the rent for Beitul-Ighsaan and offered to

pay R5 for each student until last year.

The welfare was founded when the madrassa started to grow and there was a need to move to a bigger space.

The rent is quite pricy and the conditions are not up to stan-dard. There are poor bathroom facilities and no wudhu (ablution) facilities however there is space to accommodate these facilities but there will be an increase in rent if it is installed.

Again, Moulana Ighsaan was able to get a sponsor for the rent and has successfully been able to register approximately 112 students.

Fundraising is poor and Beitul-Ighsaan struggles to uphold the standards of the facility but the work they are doing is for a good cause.

Beitul-Ighsaan in turn gives back to the community by offer-ing assistance to those in need. For any contribution should it be in funds or labour or in kind will be of great help to the Organisations and its commu-nity.

Let Your Children Feel Bad

As a parent, you hate it when your children feel bad. It tugs at your heart strings when they are afraid, disappointed, or sad. Your natural tendency is to try to make them feel better as quickly as possible by soothing, placating, assuaging, or distracting them from their ill feelings. Yet, in doing so, you rob them of the opportunity to experience, learn from, and, ultimately, master their emotional life.

When you don’t allow your children to experience their emotions, you prevent them from -

ture. Your children need to be able to just sit with their unpleasant emotions and ask “Why do I feel so bad?” and “What can I do to get over feeling this way?”

Don’t Give Your Children Your iPhoneExpediency is one of the most dangerous words in parenting. It means doing what is easiest for you, not what is best for your children. You now have more ways than ever to keep your kids entertained and out of your hair. We have truly reached new heights (or should I say depths) thanks to the iPhone, the Swiss Army knife of parental expediency, for dealing with bored or cantankerous children.

Your children may become literally addicted to technology because its frequent use triggers the same neurochemical activity brain as do drugs and gambling.

Children are deprived of the opportunity to get out of their doldrums on their own. And they will struggle when they get bored later in

In conclusion, I encourage you to expose your children to the risky experiences that Mr Gever Tully’s advocates. More importantly, though, I urge you to expose your children to truly “dangerous” experiences such as conditional love, no praise, failure, bad feelings, and boredom. These treacherous encounters will surely serve your children well as they begin to experience the many perils that lie ahead in their lives.
