CAPITOL BAPTIST CHURCH w 401 KESSELRING AVENUE w DOVER, DE 19904 w CBCOFDOVER.COM w 96.1 FM F or the past few weeks, we have been looking at Israel’s seventh judge named Jair. Jair is a minor judge of whom only three verses are written. We read in Judges 10:3-5, “And aſter him arose Jair, a Gileadite, and judged Israel twenty and two years. And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead. And Jair died, and was buried in Camon.” Although little is written of him, there are several spiritual applications that we can make concerning his life. So far, we have seen: I. e Person, Jair (vs. 1a) II. e Place of Jair (vs. 3-4) is week, let’s consider: III. e Progeny of Jair (vs. 4) In verse four, we read of Jair’s offspring. Jair had a very big family! e Bible tells us that he had thirty sons. We also read that his thirty sons rode on thirty ass colts and had thirty cities. ose cities were called Havoth-jair and are located in the land of Gilead. Why did God give us these facts? Can we make any spiritual applications from them? In eastern culture, “riding on a donkey” was a symbol of rulership. ose that rode on donkeys were governors, rulers, or held some other position of authority. For example, in I Kings 1, King David was dying. His son Adonijah wanted to be the next king in Israel, but David knew that God wanted Solomon to be the next king. To thwart Adonijah’s vie for the throne, he instructed his men in verses 33-34 to “...Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon: And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.” When the people would see Solomon riding on a mule, they would know that this was verification that he was the new king in Israel. In Zechariah 9:9, when speaking of Christ, we read, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” Christ’s riding upon a donkey was verification that He is THE King of Israel—and the very King of Kings and Lord of Lords! So the fact that Jair’s thirty sons rode on thirty ass colts, and had thirty cities, seems to indicate that they were men of authority. ey were godly, respectable young men who walked in the footsteps of their godly father. Just like their father Jair, they were light-givers and leaders in Gilead. is tells me that Jair perpetuated the truth to his descendants. He was a godly father who reared godly children, and in particular, young men! One of the greatest needs in our nation today is godly men, men who know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior and know what it means to be a Christian man. Manhood is more than owning a truck with a gun rack on the back. It is more than being an avid fisherman or hunter. Christian men are men of integrity and self-control. ey are men who are willing to take on the responsibilities of life, like being a godly husband and father, working hard, and being a role model for the next generation. Christian manhood is a combination of truth and grace, courage and compassion, and strength and humility. I believe that one of the reasons we have lost so many battles in our nation is because we are not even equipped to fight anymore. e America of today is not the America of yesterday. Young people today in our public schools are not learning about the true meaning of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, or the Bible. ey are not being taught the Christian heritage of our nation. ey are instead being taught evolution and humanism, abortion as a legitimate choice, that man is basically good, and the “right” that every person has to choose their own gender and make their own sexual choice. What is the answer? e answer is the Christian home. Fathers must take the lead in their homes and make the Christian training of their children a priority. ere is so much to train our children about, and we need to be taking advantage of every available moment to teach our children. Jair reproduced himself in his children. He passed the truth along. Are you? We need to take advantage of every available moment to teach our children. For the past few weeks, we have been looking at Israel’s seventh judge named Jair.

Jair is a minor judge of whom only three verses are written. We read in Judges 10:3-5, “And after him arose Jair, a Gileadite, and judged Israel twenty and two years. And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead. And Jair died, and was buried in Camon.” Although little is written of him, there are several spiritual applications that we can make concerning his life. So far, we have seen:

I. The Person, Jair (vs. 1a)II. The Place of Jair (vs. 3-4)

This week, let’s consider: III. The Progeny of Jair (vs. 4)

In verse four, we read of Jair’s offspring. Jair had a very big family! The Bible tells us that he had thirty sons. We also read that his thirty sons rode on thirty ass colts and had thirty cities. Those cities were called Havoth-jair and are located in the land of Gilead. Why did God give us these facts? Can we make any spiritual applications from them? In eastern culture, “riding on a donkey” was a symbol of rulership. Those that rode on donkeys were governors, rulers, or held some other position of authority. For example, in I Kings 1, King David was dying. His son Adonijah wanted to be the next king in Israel, but David knew that God wanted Solomon to be the next king. To thwart Adonijah’s vie for the throne, he instructed his men in verses 33-34 to “...Take with you the servants of

your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon: And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.” When the people would see Solomon riding on a mule, they would know that this was verification that he was the new king in Israel.

They were godly, respectable young men who walked in the footsteps of their godly father. Just like their father Jair, they were light-givers and leaders in Gilead. This tells me that Jair perpetuated the truth to his descendants. He was a godly father who reared godly children, and in particular, young men! One of the greatest needs in our nation today is godly men, men who know the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior and know

August 2016 Along the Way: “Teacher, how do we live like a Christian?” ask Ogtogui and Urgamal as we meet together for the 5th time in 2 months. Now sincere in their faith in Christ, it’s time to apply it to their life as a young couple. “Teacher, some people tell us we need to be filled with the Spirit and speak in tongues. Can you explain?” “We like to drink vodka sometimes with friends. Is that still ok?” “We have financial troubles. Will the Bible teach us what to do with money?” And so, the phase of discipleship and personal consecration begins. Genuine interest in relevant areas of their lives directs our study. How to live day-to-day in fellowship with their Saviour. We open our Bibles and jump in. They read the texts, we discuss it, and I share my testimony. Their faces light up as they see the continuity in God’s Word as it applies to each area. For 2 1/2 hours, they tirelessly want more until I finally proclaim, “Folks, that’s good for today.” Ministry Update: Praise be to God for the progess made with my prior English students, Ogtogui and Urgamal. They have now returned to visit their family in Inner Mongolia (Northern China) till August 20th to celebrate the summer holiday together. Now saved, their lives have been transformed during the past few weeks as we have met regularly to begin discipling. Just like sponges, they want to learn God’s ways as it relates to every area of living. Their sincerity fuels an ongoing, passionate exchange between us. The joy they express while learning God’s Word is palpable. I anticipate the difference they will make as they share time with their family. The summer holiday also gave me the chance to travel in Mongolia to visit some of my missionary friends like the Keroacks who nurtured me during my first 3 years living in the far north countryside town as a dentist.

Then I traveled with other friends to enjoy several days camping and fly-fishing in the mountain streams of a northern province. We caught some nice white fish and enjoyed good fellowship over many campfires. It’s been a very refreshing break. On August 28, the fall semester at our school will begin, so I am beginning to get my thoughts and plans together for our new curriculum. I am also back in touch with Dr. Unka at the Mongolian dental hospital to resume my training there.Praises1. Ogtogui and Urgamal’s personal salvation and progress made in their
