Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz

The “battle” of the verbs! SERSER

• The simplest way (not necessarily the most accurate way) to explain the use of “ser” is that it is for enduring characteristics. Things inherent to the quality of a person or thing.It’s the “permanent” one.

ESTARESTAR• This is used to

describe things that can easily change (weather, location, condition, etc.)

• This can also be about a state of being - things that are changeable (emotions).

How do I know which one to use?

• SerSer is used to classify and identify lasting attributes. Use the acronym DOCTORDOCTOR::

• Description• Occupation (like DOCTOR)

• Characteristics• Time• Origin• Relationship

• EstarEstar is used to indicate changeable states and locations. Use the acronym PLACEPLACE::

• Position• Location (like PLACE)

• Action• Condition• Emotion.
