•Founded in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1992 by Samuel Moritz and his younger brother, Spencer, as a way to make money while in college.

•Since then, the company has expanded considerably, now serving the entire New Haven area.

•Here’s an interview with Samuel about what led to the success of his college start-up.

What made you choose the moving industry?

• To be honest, Spencer and I were just young college guys looking to make a few bucks. I had a pickup, and our friends were always moving to different apartments and in-and-out of the dorms, so we figured that was a great place to start.

When did you realize that this was more than just a summer job?

• While in college, I studied entrepreneurship and created a business plan on the side. After graduating, I was lucky enough to present my idea to a couple of investors, and they bought in. The rest, well, is history.

What did you do once you got financial backing from investors?

• The first thing I did was rent an office and officially hire my brother. We then purchased two new work trucks and trailers, and hired a part-time receptionist to book appointments.

How did you advertise the company?

• Well, it was tough at-first, because even with the backing we didn’t have enough for a formal advertising campaign. I knew we had the trucks, though, so I bought car magnets that said “Moritz Moving Company” and listed our phone number. I put them on the doors and the tailgates of the trucks so when people would see us around town they’d jot down our number.

How much of a response did you get from the magnetic signs?

• At first, not so much—I guess people just had to register who we were. After awhile, though, the calls really began to pick up. So much so in fact that our receptionist became full-time! I figured I could make the trucks even more visible, so I added car window decals to each of the rear windows, which only led to more calls.

How does Moritz advertise now?

• Now that we’re bigger, we have the budget to do more than just car signs, but we really don’t need to. The signs on my trucks are a little fancier, but I’m sticking to the same idea I had back then, and it’s working quite well.
