S Lightweight construction is a real source of opportunity for Germany as an industrial centre. This specialist tech-nology is on its way to becoming one of the most important fields of innovation and growth of the 21st century. I thank CFK Valley for the way in which it maps and fosters this development.

Lightweight construction is a paradigm of the fundamental transformation that is taking place in our economy – a trans-formation towards a completely new structure of value-add-ed. In this new set-up, it is innovations in machine and plant-part construction that are driving industrial developments forward. Over the coming years, we will be using targeted measures to increase the share of lightweight construction in industrial value-added. This will serve to advance the fun-damental process of modernisation taking place in German industry, and to strengthen our competitive edge.

Lightweight construction lowers material costs, reduces our dependency on the supply of raw materials, and creates a greater number highly-qualified jobs in our country. Develop-ments in lightweight construction also lead to improvements in product properties. This helps protect the environment as fewer resources and energy are needed and carbon emissions are reduced. In this way, lightweight construction offers an answer as to how industrialisation can be better combined with protecting the environment.

A key technology in lightweight construction is that of compos-ite fibres. This year’s CFK Convention will once again present a host of trends and innovations taking place in this branch. This includes innovative developments in the field of aerospace that are also being applied to other sectors.

The fact that so many different countries take part in the CFK Convention demonstrates how CFK Valley is on the pulse of global developments. The work undertaken by the associa-tion has undoubtedly been bolstered by the strategic coopera-tion it has entered into with a number of different countries. Such partnership is crucial for the development and manufacture of innovative products. Lightweight construction is increasingly becoming a market driver. My ministry is seeking to foster this trend by introducing a range of different initiatives, such as the ’Lightweight Construction Competency Atlas‘ – which will create greater transparency – and by helping participants to network.

I am very pleased with the productive efficiency of Germany’s industrial base and am relying on you to pioneer innovative, ecological and economical technologies designed with the fu-ture in mind. I wish all participants an interesting time and the CFK Convention 2016 every success.

Sincerely yours,

Sigmar GabrielFederal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy

Worldwide there is a continuous grow-ing number of supporters promoting the use of CFRP. Therefore, we are glad that with the CFK-Valley Stade Conven-tion we established a platform for the interexchange between international re-searcher, developer and decision maker.

We are happy to present to you South Korea as our associated partner for this year’s convention, who will exhibit its recent CFRP developments and industrial products. As this 10th con-vention is themed “Carbon and Mobility” Prof. Sung Ha, from Hanyang University will open the convention with an address on “More Competitive Composites for Better Mobility”.

About today’s use of Carbon Composites of Automotive, Dr. Lutz- Eike Elend, Vice President of Fiber-Reinforced Plastics and Composite Design BMW in Munich will perform in his keynote “Applications, Opportunities and Challenges by using Carbon Composites for Automotive”.

A 2nd keynote shows future prospects. By using composites in mobility with essential economic requirements, we have to manage a step change towards new build concepts according to the material behaviour of composites materials. One way to get this step change, Dr.- Ing. Moritz Maier Head of the R&D department Bionic Lightweight Design at the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven and Markus Hollermann, Innovation Manager & Biomimetics

Specialist Pumacy Technologies AG in Berlin will present it in their keynote. But also our philosophy of mobility concerning transport systems in mega cities requires a review. The key-notes of Prof. Thomforde will introduce you to these issues.

Looking for the single part production, Mr. Daniel Ott, Web Industries, USA gives a keynote on “Composite Formatting”. He will explicate how important a merge of material optimization, machines and methods is for better fabrication solutions.

Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Prof. E.h. Prof. Lothar Kroll, TU Chemnitz presents Novel Machine Systems to merge technologies, espe-cially looking for assembly and systems integrations.

Mobility for people with handicaps is very important. Composite is a perfect material to manufacture prostheses. Maximillian Segl, Development Composite Materials & Parts at Otto Bock HealthCare GmbH, Duderstadt gives you an overview of pos-sible solutions in medical technology.

At least: We would like inviting you to join and enjoy the amaz-ing social programme the representing team of South Korea prepared for you.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel S. HerrmannCFK Valley e.V. – CTO Chief Technology Officer

KOREA – PARTNER COUNTRY 2016

In the context of international networking, the upcoming CFK-Valley Stade Convention will present Partner Country KOREA – with their own session and a joint booth with about 7 companies and institutes.

With its vibrant culture and beautiful scenery, JEONBUK PROVINCE is well on its way of becoming the next hub of Northeast Asia. Jeonbuk Province and Jeonju City have been at the center of the carbon industry in Korea for over 10 years, holding an International Carbon Festival with regional industries in the areas of aerospace, automotive, wind energy and carbon composites. Jeonbuk and Jeonju have also built a Carbon Valley with a value chain that covers all stages from carbon fiber to the end product.

CITY OF GUMI is home to the South Korea’s largest inland industrial complex. It is located in western part of Korea’s north Gyeongsang province, 277 km south of Seoul and 167 km north of Busan. The population of Gumi is approximately 430,000 with 61.7% of citizens under 30 years of age and the City boasts young and abundant skillful workers. Gumi is an important industrial cluster of the country with many companies such

as Samsung Electronics and LG Display. The major industries in Gumi are Electronics, Carbon fibers, Medical devices, Automo-tive and Aircraft parts industry etc. In Gumi, there are about 3,200 companies with 120,000 workers. It is the largest scale in Korea. In 2015, the city exported USD 27.3 billion (accounts for 62.86percent of Gyeongsangbuk-do province’s total exports and 5.2% of national exports).

Stade has a lot to offer. No wonder, with a history that dates back a thousand years! History that can be seen not only in museums, but also living history that can be experienced in the beautifully renovated old town. Since completion of the STADEUM culture and congress center in 1989, Stade, the town on the Schwinge, has continued to develop as a cultural center of the Elbe-Weser Triangle. The secret of the avant-garde building‘s success is an effective synthesis of atmosphere, experience, organisation, and engineering.
