We are moving forward in 2013 and we would like to give you an update about where we stand and where CarboWet is going at the moment. The main interest of CarboWet is the ecosystem valuation function of certified carbon trading. We strongly believe that by providing an economic valuation for wetlands the value of these wetlands will increase. This in turn will lead to con- servation. To come closer to our goal we conducted some important activities this year. Activities 2013 CarboWet cooperates with Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) in Jordan. The core concept upon which the coop- eration between FoEME and CarboWet is based is to dedicate part of the funds that CarboWet can attract for carbon offset- ting through tree-planting, watershed protection and wet- land conservation/development in the Sharhabil bin Hassneh Eco Park (SHE - www. http://jordanecopark.com) on an annual basis. The SHE and the Ziglab (Wetland) Initiative have been created as pilot projects whose goal is to establish a model for preserving ecologically important habitats within the Jor- dan Valley. In return FoEME will provide high profile publicity for the CarboWet Foundation and its work as well as the joint FoEME/ CarboWet work. Both parties will also continue to advertise the carbon off-setting work of CarboWet through the SHE. We signed the MoU in on the 23rd of March 2013 and now we are working together on approaching different organizations and companies to offset their carbon through CarboWet. Introduction

This is the second newsletter of the CarboWet Foundation.

This in turn will lead to con-servation. To come closer to our goal we conducted some important activities this year.

Activities 2013

CarboWet cooperates with Friends of the Earth Middle East (FoEME) in Jordan. The core concept upon which the coop-eration between FoEME and CarboWet is based is to dedicate part of the funds that CarboWet can attract for carbon offset-ting through tree-planting, watershed protection and wet-land conservation/development in the Sharhabil bin Hassneh Eco Park (SHE - www. http://jordanecopark.com) on an annual basis. The SHE and the Ziglab (Wetland) Initiative have been created as pilot projects whose goal is to establish a model for preserving ecologically important habitats within the Jor-dan Valley.

In return FoEME will provide high profile publicity for the CarboWet Foundation and its work as well as the joint FoEME/CarboWet work. Both parties will also continue to advertise the carbon off-setting work of CarboWet through the SHE. We signed the MoU in on the 23rd of March 2013 and now we are working together on approaching different organizations and companies to offset their carbon through CarboWet.

The first company that will donate funds to the mecha-nisms to offset its carbon emissions will be SaafConsult B.V. Korevaar van Dijk a personal injury claim handler firm in the Netherlands will also donate money to offset its CO2.

Rotary Amman

Beginning of this year, we wrote a proposal for the Rotary of Amman Cosmopolitan. The proposal aimed to clarify the work of the CarboWet Foundation and to propose to the Rotary of Amman Cosmopolitan to be the first Rotary club to go carbon-neutral in Jordan and the Middle East! We are working to finalize this proposal and make it operational.

The process would be as follows:

a. Each member would calculate his or her carbon emis-sions from air travel, road travel and heating, electricity, etc. (their carbon footprint). Staff of the CarboWet Founda-tion would help the members to do this through a stand-ardised methodology;

b. The value of the emissions would be calculated using recognised methodologies;

c. Each member would commit to donate the equivalent of the emissions they have generated through their work or life style to the CarboWet Foundation;

d. The CarboWet Foundation would use 50% of the money received for its research work on carbon storage in wet-lands, and 50% would be used for afforestation and pro-tection of the wetland in the SHE Park in the Jordan Valley.

Mava

Last February CarboWet prepared a concept note and a budget for a project entitled Wetland Security. We have followed the MAVA guidelines and hope our note will al-low MAVA to invite us to develop a full-fledged proposal.

Future PR/Funding

We need funding to conduct the research that is necessary to develop the methodology.

Companies can work with the CarboWet foundation to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. The funds will be partly devoted to the nature in cooperation with FoEME, as described above. The rest of the money will be used for research and PR activities.

The CarboWet staff will help to calculate the carbon-offset of the private persons and companies. SaafConsult and Ko-revaar van Dijk are already Carbon neutral by offsetting their carbon through the CarboWet Foundation.

Furthermore, we will keep looking for other possibilities to attract sponsors.

In order to promote CarboWet we created a website of CarboWet. For PR reasons we are trying to be present at major conferences related to environmental conservation, climate change, etc.

We are preparing an article for the H2O magazine and CDKN newsletter.
