BUILD YOUR SUCCESS ONOUR EXPERIENCEWhile state-of-the-art hardware iscertainly an advantage, our applica-tion experience is what really deliv-ers the benefits to our customers.Often, our customers are first-time

OUR DEHUMIDIFICATIONTECHNOLOGYOur equipment removes moisturefrom air by using a desiccant – amaterial which easily attracts andholds water vapor. Desiccant dehu-midifiers are especially well-suited toremoving moisture from air at lowtemperatures and low humidities.

In our units, the desiccant isimpregnated into a corrugatedceramic composite material which is formed into a wheel. Air passeseasily through the flutes, contactingthe desiccant. The wheel rotatesslowly (6 to 10 rph) between two airstreams. The incoming process airstream – the larger one – gives off itsmoisture to the desiccant. Theprocess air is dry as it leaves thewheel. The humidity-laden wheelrotates slowly into a second, smallerairstream which has been heated. This smaller exhaust airstream –called the reactivation air – warmsthe desiccant. The warmed desic-cant gives off its moisture, which isthen carried away by the reactivationair. The newly dried desiccant mate-rial is rotated back into the processair, where it absorbs moisture onceagain.

The desiccant support structure, which we call the HoneyCombe®

wheel, is quite remarkable. It canhold more than its own weight inwater vapor. Our wheels are built tocollect and release water six timesevery hour, 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week, for years. This durability isone reason our dehumidifiersrequire so much less maintenance

For example, our organizationincludes more than 60 applicationengineers, who are located through-

out North, Central and SouthAmerica. Not only have these engi-neers had decades of experience, wekeep track of what they have learnedand make it available to you.

Our central application supportoffice in Amesbury, MA maintainshundreds of binders full of usefultechnical information related toapplications. When you call withquestions about pharmaceutical and food processing, preventingcorrosion and microbiological cont-amination, drying photographicfilm; or when you need to knowabout the hygroscopic characteris-tics of seeds, fertilizers and pow-dered potatoes, we can provide use-ful reference material and bibliogra-phies. This documentation is avail-able to you through our applicationengineers. Our unique consultingand information retrieval servicescome to you at no additional chargebeyond the cost of the equipment. We want to help you avoid knownproblems of the past, and we areeager to support your success withour experience.

Cargocaire EngineeringCorporation was founded in 1939by Commander Oliver Colvin, USN,to provide a solution to the costlyproblem of cargo deteriorationcaused by humidity. That focus gavethe company its name. After WorldWar II, Commander Colvin expand-ed operations from cargo ships tomilitary storage, and then intoindustrial uses for dehumidificationsuch as pharmaceutical and elec-tronic manufacturing. In the late1950’s, the R&D department ofCargocaire began a cooperativedevelopment program with CarlMunters, the Swedish-born inventorof the absorption refrigerator andfoam-board insulation. The pro-gram resulted in the introductionof the HoneyCombe® wheels, amajor advance in dehumidificationtechnology which continues to leadthe industry today.

After Commander Colvin retired, the Munters and Cargocaire compa-nies were merged, and they contin-ued to expand operations through-out the world. Today, the companyoperates 10 manufacturing plantsand has offices in 25 countries.Munters Corporation producesproducts as diverse as advancedVOC pollution control equipment, gas cleaning media, humidificationmedia, as well as HoneyCombe®

dehumidifiers and integrated dehu-midification systems.

We pioneered the use of dehumidification equipment forwarehouses, active-duty militaryequipment, lithium battery manu-facturing and even supermarkets, where reduced humidity helpsrefrigeration systems operate moreefficiently. Our equipment alsohelps protect the cultural heritageof humankind by preventing deteri-oration of ancient Egyptian artifactsin Cairo and the photographs ofthe Apollo moon landing inHouston, Texas. We have a tradition

of innovation and eager pursuit ofsound technical solutions to chal-lenging problems.

MUNTERS: AN INTERNATIONAL COMPANY WITH A TRADITION OF INNOVATION

Commander Oliver Colvin founded Cargocairein 1939, pioneering the use of desiccant dehumidifiers to prevent humidity damage tomarine cargo.

Carl Munters, the Swedish-born inventor of the absorption refrigerator and plastic foaminsulation, worked with Commander Colvin’scompany to create the first desiccant wheel dehumidifier. Cargocaire and Carl Munters’companies were merged in 1979.

HPX DesiccantCargocaire’s unique HPX wheel

is an adsorbent that provides verylow dew point (-60°F and lower).

This desiccant is used under the advice of a Cargocaire engineer for specialty

applications.

Zeolite (Molecular Sieve)In very dry environments, zoelite

desiccants are ideal. In return for asomewhat larger investment in reacti-

vation energy, they remove moisturefrom even the warmest, driest airstreams.

When your application requires humidity controlbelow 10% relative humidity, or when hot air mustbe dehumidified, zeolite wheels offers advantagesover other types of desiccants.

OFF THE SHELF UNITS (HC)At the smaller end of our product line we make standard dehumidifiers with capacities from 30 to300 scfm (standard cubic feet per minute). You caninstall these easily by plugging them into a wall socket and connecting duct work. They are completewith fans and heaters. These units can operate automatically and are often used in applications like archival storage, museums, small environmentalchambers and military storage applications. Forexample, three of these units currently protectLeonardo da Vinci’s famous fresco “The LastSupper” from excess humidity.

Lithium ChlorideIf your application requires high

moisture removal capacity with minimal energy requirements over a

broad range of humidity levels, lithiumchloride wheels are especially useful. Also,

as a natural inhibitor of microbiological growth, lithium chloride desiccant wheels are often usedwhere minimizing biological contaminants is essential.

Titanium Gel When your installation requires

operation in highly saturated airstreams, titanium gel is an excellent

choice. It has moderate moisture capacity over a broad range of humidity

levels with moderate reactivation energy require-ments. No silica gel wheel outperforms the Titaniumgel wheel. Resistant to “wash out,” these newenhanced wheels provide 90% or greater efficienciesfor up to ten years of operation.

MODULAR UNITS WITH OPTIONS (HCD)For customers who need to integrate desiccant dehumidifiers into their own processes or air condi-tioning systems, we offer our HCD-series modulardehumidifiers with capacities from 600 to 12,000scfm. These modules can be combined to form evenlarger systems.

Along with the basic HoneyCombe® rotor-drive-and-seal assembly, we can provide your choice ofprocess and reactivation fan and either gas, steam orelectric reactivation heater modules for you to inte-grate into your system. We can also supply modularheating and cooling coils and filters in air-tightenclosures to work along with the dehumidifier.

These modular dehumidifiers are used in a verywide variety of applications from clean room humi-dity control to chocolate coated candy and centraldry air systems for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

INTEGRATED DEHUMIDIFICATION SYSTEMS (IDS)Often customers ask us to engineer and assemble anentire dehumidification and air conditioning systemincluding cooling and heating elements and sophisti-cated controls, as well as the dehumidifier. We callthese our Integrated Dehumidification Systems(IDS). All components are assembled on a structuralsteel skid and tested as a system at the factory. Thesystems are available in airflow capacities from 400 to80,000 scfm.

Our IDS systems have been used for hundreds ofcritical manufacturing processes such as surgicalsuture packaging, production of computer micro-processors and controlling humidity in plutonium-handling rooms.

When you need the ultimate in reliability, con-sider one of our custom-designed IDS systems to saveyou the time and costs of designing and testing yourown system.

The IDS concept can save thousands of dollarsand reduce coordination problems on the job sitebecause the system arrives ready-to-run after connec-tion of duct work and utilities. Your in-house designtime is reduced and on-site construction is simpli-fied. Many of our customers find these benefits areespecially useful when their design resources are limited or where skilled labor is costly or hard tofind. And for IDS systems, our factory-trained serviceengineers are always on the spot for start-up at noextra charge. With a Cargocaire IDS, you can relaxand concentrate on other aspects of your complexprojects, knowing the design and construction ofyour dehumidification system is in good hands.

LARGE-SCALE MODULAR DEHUMIDIFIERS (HCE)To dry airstreams larger than 10,000 sfcm, our HCE-series of modular units are the ideal choice.Available in four sizes from 15,000 to 40,000 scfm, the HCE modules can combine to dry airflows of any size.

Our modular approach to large airflows is eco-nomical compared to a single-unit design becauseindividual modules can be brought on-line or shutdown as the moisture load changes. This avoids thecost of running a single large unit for a small mois-ture load. In some cases, the energy cost savings of amodular approach to large systems can be measuredin tens of thousands of dollars per year.

SPECIAL PURPOSE DEHUMIDIFIERSOccasionally, customers need dehumidification solutions that are highly specific to a single purpose. For example, we supply dehumidifiers with specialmaterials and stringent vibration and noise specifica-tions to dry out missile tubes in the Trident NuclearSubmarine. We also provide special portable dehu-midifiers with structural bases and large casterswhich are used for temporary drying of buildingsand emergency replacements in the industrialprocesses. We can respond to unique situations, giving you just what you need at a price which meetsyour budget.
