Caribbean Connection

For the past few years, Executive Director

Mark Ryder and his family have been

working with Extraordinary Minds, Ash-

ley’s Learning Center in the Turks and

Caicos Islands. Unfortunately, this coun-

try excludes children with significant de-

velopmental disabilities and health issues

from their public schools and therapies;

and inclusion opportunities are not availa-

ble. When Ashley was born and found to

have autism, her mom, Angela Williams,

was determined to provide her with learn-

ing and social opportunities. Coming together with other families on the island and showing

the same determination and passion that the founding parents of Morrison Center did in the

1950's, she began working and fighting to develop services for children with disabilities of

the Turks and Caicos. Mark and his family joined these families in their efforts to work

with their government on disability rights and inclusion opportunities; consulted on individ-

ual cases and in developing a small learning center; and worked to raise awareness and

money for therapy services. Staff from Extraordinary Minds, Ashley’s Learning Center will

be visiting Morrison Center in the coming year to connect with our educators and thera-

pists. Mark hopes to create a supportive, mentoring relationship between Morrison Center

and these inspiring parents.

Once again, the late summer weather provided a beautiful evening for Morrison Center’s Annu-

al “Shot in the Dark” Golf Tournament on September 8th at the Purpoodock Club in Cape Eliz-

abeth. The event kicked off with a putting contest and social hour, followed by dinner, a

presentation from staff therapists Katie Broadbent and Tracey Payeur

and a spirited live auction hosted by Board Member Dan Honan.

After dark, the golfers took to the glow-lighted course. Thank you to

the many golfers, guests, board members, sponsors, and volunteers

who helped make the evening a success! On left: Morrison Staff Team enjoyed the night!

On right: Tom Cloutier celebrates his win of the Putting Contest.

Yoga at the Center

Melissa Camire joins our staff as

the new Senior Director of Edu-

cational Programs. She has

20 years of experience in the

special education field where she

began as an occupational thera-

pist and in time progressed into

the role of Special Education

Director and was most recently

at Sweetser where she served as

the Senior Director of Educational Services. At Morri-

son Center she will support the educational directors

and their staff in the continued growth and development

of our educational programs. She will also serve as a

liaison to the Department of Education and other educa-

tional agencies. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys

spending time with her family, and watching her two

young boys as they participate in their various sporting

events.

Thanks to a generous grant from Martin’s Point Health

Care, consumers who attend Morrison Center (and their

staff!) are feeling more grounded, centered, and flexible

these days! In August, the Center received a $500 grant

to help support the start-up costs of yoga sessions in-

cluding the purchasing of yoga

mats, blocks, and other props that

make poses more accessible to our

clients. The mental and physical

benefits of yoga are many, includ-

ing: increased body awareness,

stress relief, reduced muscle ten-

sion and inflammation, sharpened

attention and concentration, calm-

ing and centering of the nervous

system, increased flexibility, muscle strength and tone,

and improved respiration, energy and vitality. Our Pre-

schoolers are also enjoying the benefits of yoga ses-

sions. Namaste!

Generous Donation from Lyric Music Theater!

Holiday Wreath Order Information Enclosed!

The Adult Community Support Program at our Riverside, Portland location is a very eclectic group with a love of thea-

ter, music and performing arts. Self-expression through music, theater, and dance is a vital part of daily programming

which gives our clients creative freedom to explore the many wonders of story and song. Our talented and dedicat-

ed staff encourage and nurture these talents. Earlier this fall, Morrison Center was thrilled to receive a large donation

of costumes from the Lyric Music Theater in South Portland. The Lyric Music Theater is an all-volunteer community

theater that has been entertaining Southern Maine for more than half a century. Located in a 1904 converted church, the

theater provides a 180-seat house and is a home to four high-quality productions each season, as well as a hearth for

some of the best talent and greatest ambition in New England. They also offer sensory friendly performances on a

regular basis. For more information, visit their website at www.lyricmusictheater.org. Thank you for your generous

donation!

Morrison Center was honored to be selected as

the beneficiary of the 3rd Annual Maine Com-

mercial Association of Realtors (MCAR) Golf

Tournament at Prout’s Neck Country Club in

Scarborough on Tuesday Sept. 19th. Thanks to a

full field of golfers, generous sponsors, and a raf-

fle with fantastic prizes, the event raised more

than $12,000 to support the programs and activi-

ties of Morrison Center. Thank you MCAR, and

Event Chair Greg Perry of Cardente Real Estate,

for your ongoing support of the Center!

Maine Commercial Association of Realtors (MCAR)
