Fr. Paul’s Weekly LetterDear Friend of Carmel Mission,
It is with pleasure that I can announce that we will be opening the Mission for a limited celebration of Mass on Sunday, June 21.
As we have discussed for several weeks now, there will be significant changes in how we access the church and celebrate Mass here at Mission to safeguard the health of our parishioners and staff. I urge you to visit our website, carmelmission.org to view our Advisory Page. This will have the most comprehensive and up to date information. Please check this regularly and, if you choose to attend Mass on June 21, please review it carefully before coming to the Mission.
We will be creating a brief video to demonstrate our new procedures for the celebration of Mass and help you to have an idea of what to expect should you choose to attend Mass on June 21.
A few important things to note:
• There will be two Masses at 7:30am and 11am starting on June 21. • Capacity for each mass will be a maximum of 100 people total. • Please arrive no earlier than 30 minutes before the start time of Mass, and not later than 10
minutes before. Access will be granted on a first come, first served basis and will close when we meet capacity for each Mass.
Our streaming Mass will continue. Per Diocesan guidelines, those with underlying health conditions and those over the age of 65 should not attend the Mass in person. The dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains in place. We encourage all those in these high risk groups and anyone who feels in any way uncomfortable to attend Mass to remain safe at home and attend the streaming Mass to continue to pray together with our community.
As you can imagine, we are facing many unknown variables as we attempt re-opening. We are keenly aware of the continued threat posed by the Coronavirus and are taking every measure possible to ensure the safety of our parishioners and our staff. We ask for your continued patience and attention as we work to safely welcome you back for the celebration of Mass.
Again, I ask you to regularly visit our Advisory Page for more complete information and direct anyone with questions on our re-opening to visit there as well.
I thank you for your ongoing support, and look forward to continuing to pray for our world together whether online or in person.
Blessings, Fr. Paul

My Jesus,
I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into
my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.
Amen.

Scripture MessageReadings for the Week
Today’s Readings
Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also called Corpus Christi Sunday. On this day we take time to contemplate and celebrate the presence of Christ in the eucharist species of bread and wine. We hear in the first reading from Exodus how God allowed the Israelites to know hunger, and then fed them with manna, bread falling from Heaven, “a food unknown to you or your fathers.” God fed God’s people for the forty years they spent in the desert before coming to the Promised Land. God did not allow his people to starve but showered them in bread that sustained life. In the Gospel Jesus tells us that He is the “living bread that came from heaven,” and He will give His flesh as “life for the world.” The origin of the word Eucharist is the Greek word, eucharistia, meaning thanksgiving. Jesus pours himself out as life for the world, and when we celebrate the Eucharist, we offer thanksgiving for that sacrifice. In the psalm we hear how God showered His people with blessings. We are fed at the table of the Lord. We are promised eternal life in our consumption of Christ’s Body and Blood. We are nourished to be followers of Jesus Christ, and to become bread the world; bread that sustains and nourishes those in need.

Annual Ministry Appeal 2020
For more information, visit our AMA page at carmelmission.org/2020-annual-ministry-appeal/
Dear Friends of Carmel Mission,
I hope that you and your loved ones are well. Each year at this time, parishes throughout the Diocese of Monterey are launching the Annual Ministries Appeal. By our participation in this appeal, we assist so many people to grow in faith. In this AMA campaign letter we will provide you with some idea of the huge variety of diocesan ministries that benefit as a result of your generous support of this appeal.Since I was appointed Pastor at our beautiful Mission, your support has seen us go from strength to strength. Last year, our Renew A Pew Campaign had more donors contribute than any other parish in our diocese. We also raised the largest amount and were able to renew our pews for the next generation. I hope that you find them comfortable. The first $50,000.00 raised goes to our diocese and any sum over that amount comes back to our Mission. This year our parish campaign is called: Heavenly Sounds, and has as its objective, the enhancement of the sound in our Basilica. We probably have the best music in the Diocese of Monterey. Our wonderful Choir, Cantors, and musicians add so much to our liturgies and help us raise our minds and hearts to God. We also have music events throughout the year, the Bach Festival being a prime example. It is our intention to develop our music ministry and to add to our musical calendar.A major component of our music at the Mission is our wonderful Casavant organ. This beautiful instrument adds so much to our many liturgies. The time has come when our Casavant organ requires immediate attention, if we are to continue to use it. A portion of our Heavenly Sounds Campaign will be used to replace all the electrical and computer components, which are totally out of date. We will be providing you with more detailed information soon.I know that once again I can rely on your generous support, so that we at Carmel Mission can continue to create those Heavenly Sounds.
Sincere thanks to all, Blessings, Fr. Paul, Pastor at Carmel Mission

Monday, June 8: Our God Is Not Indifferent – Pope Francis
Our God is not indifferent, he is close and personal. God does not want so much to reveal to us that he exists, but rather that he is the ‘God with us,’ that he loves us, is interested in our personal story and cares for each person, from the smallest to the greatest.Even though God is in heaven, he is also on earth. Because of this, we don’t believe in a distant, indifferent entity. On the contrary, we believe in the love that created the universe and generated a people, became flesh, died and rose for us, and as the Holy Spirit transforms everything and brings it to fullness. The feast of the Trinity is not only an invitation to contemplate and praise Jesus Christ, but it is also an opportunity to celebrate with ever-new wonder the God of love, who freely offers his life to us and asks us to spread it in the world.St. Paul experienced first-hand the deep transformation of the God of love, who allows us to not only call him “Father,” but more personally, “dad,” and who gives us the ability to call on him with the total confidence of a child who abandons themselves in the arms of the one who gave them life.Through his action in each person, the Holy Spirit “makes it so that Jesus Christ is not reduced to a person of the past, but that we feel close to him, our contemporary, and that we experience the joy of being beloved children of God.We Christians are not alone because the Holy Spirit was sent to guide and accompany us.And thanks to both the presence of the Spirit and the strength he offers, we can realize with

serenity the mission that he entrusted to us: to announce and bear witness to his Gospel to everyone and so dilate communion with him and the joy that comes from it.The feast of the Holy Trinity makes us contemplate the mystery of a God who incessantly creates, redeems and sanctifies, always with love and for love, and to every creature that welcomes him, he gives the gift of reflecting a ray of his beauty, goodness and truth.May Mary, the Mother of God help each of us to fulfill with joy the mission of bearing witness to the world, thirsty for love, that the meaning of life is precisely infinite love, the concrete love of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Tuesday, June 9: Of the Communion of the Three Persons – St. John of the CrossOut of the love immense and brightThat from the two had thus begun,Words of ineffable delightThe Father spoke unto the Son:
Words of so infinite a raptureTheir drift by none could be explained:Only the Son their sense could captureThat only to Himself pertained.
What of them we can sense the clearestWas in this manner said and thought:Out of Your company, my Dearest,I can be satisfied by nought.
But if aught please me, I as dulyIn You, Yourself, the cause construe. The one who satisfies Me trulyIs him who most resembles You.
He who in nought resembles YouShall find of Me no trace or sign,Life of My Life! for only throughYour own can I rejoice in Mine.
You are the brilliance of My lightMy wisdom and My power divine,The figure of My substance brightIn whom I am well pleased to shine!
The man who loves You, O my Son,To him Myself I will belong. The love that in Yourself I wonI’ll plant in him and root it strong,Because he loved the very oneI loved so deeply and so long.
Wednesday, June 10: Lectio Divina Mark 3:21-22After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

Thursday, June 11: Laughter Came From Every Brick – St. Teresa of Avila
Friday, June 12: A Dialogue with God Love (III) – George HerbertLove bade me welcome, yet my soul drew back, Guilty of dust and sin. But quick-ey’d Love, observing me grow slack From my first entrance in, Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning If I lack’d anything.
“A guest,” I answer’d, “worthy to be here”; Love said, “You shall be he.” “I, the unkind, the ungrateful? ah my dear, I cannot look on thee.” Love took my hand and smiling did reply, “Who made the eyes but I?”
“Truth, Lord, but I have marr’d them; let my shame Go where it doth deserve.” “And know you not,” says Love, “who bore the blame?” “My dear, then I will serve.” “You must sit down,” says Love, “and taste my meat.” So I did sit and eat.
Just these two words He spokechanged my life,
“Enjoy Me.”
What a burden I thought I was to carry –a crucifix, as did He.
Love once said to me, “I know a song, would you like to hear it?”
And laughter came from every brick in the streetand from every porein the sky.
After a night of prayer, Hechanged my life whenHe sang,
“Enjoy Me.”

Saturday, June 13: A Prayer to St. Anthony of Padua – Julian of Speyer
If then you ask for miracles, death, error, all calamities, leprosy and demons fly, and health succeeds infirmities. The sea obeys and fetters break, and lifeless limbs you do restore; while treasures lost are found again, men young and old your aid implore.
All dangers vanish at your prayer, and direst need does quickly flee; Let those who know your power proclaim, Let Paduans say: these are yours. To Father, Son may glory beAnd Holy Spirit, eternally.
